A College Try

I'm going to figure this out.

I try to grab at the gloves, trying to get some kind of leverage to pull them off.

They think they have me at a disadvantage, but they've always seen me that way. I've always been just a girl who is at the mercy of everything else. Like somehow I needed to be protected from the world and kept away from all the bad things out there. They never took the time to see the real me. The actual person underneath. The one that doesn't need to be protected from bad things. They never saw what was really going on. That it wasn't me who needed to be protected from the bad things. It was the bad things that needed to be protected from me.

I can make the world better. I can fix all the problems that people have. They don't have to suffer anymore. But they're so worried about losing what they have that they can't see what's coming.

Just then, the door opens and the wannabe hero enters.

Case and point...

He makes his way inside, watching me intently. It makes me stop what I'm doing and turn my focus to him. The silence in the room is obvious but he's clearly studying me. I lay myself out and to give him a better look, leaning back on my hands and raising one knee.

"Like what you see?"

He looks away and shifts uncomfortably for a moment.

Yeah, you like what you see.

It takes him a second to look at me again.

"It's only a matter of time now."

A matter of time?

"For what?"

"For you to get the help you need."

Well this should be interesting.

"And what exactly do you think I need help with?"

"Getting you back on track, like I needed once."

"You think I'm off track?"

"Of course you're off track. I remember what it was like to be the way you are. I know what it's like to feel so alone that you have to lash out at the world. So we're going to help you."

"Right because you've done such a great job so far."

"Which is why we're bringing in a little outside help."

Outside help?

"Who?"

"My father."

I can't help but chuckle at him saying that.

"Angel? You're bringing in that blood sucker to help me? God you must be really desperate if you're going that far."

He stares for a moment at me.

"How many times do I have to say it? My sister is the one with a thing for vampires. I'm not obsessed with them like she is. I don't even like guys... well... present company excluded anyway."

That makes him narrow his eyes at me.

"Really? Because I got the impression you weren't that interested in anyone other than yourself."

"And that's mostly true. Mainly because experience has taught me that I'm the only one I can actually count on for anything. But you managed to get the job done. Which is really surprising, given that your father is basically a eunuch. It's just hilarious that you think he can help me."

"It's what he does. He helps people."

"Isn't he supposed to help the helpless though? I'm not helpless."

"You look pretty helpless there, all chained to the wall."

"Looks can be deceiving. I mean, if anyone should know that it's you."

"Really?"

"Well, yeah... I had you pegged from the beginning. You act all tough and heroic but when it comes right down to it, you have to bring in my idiot sister and her friends or daddy dearest to bring it over the finish line. I guess maybe our night together was more of a fluke than anything."

Again he gets uncomfortable at the way I talk about him.

Yeah, not liking that I keep attacking your manhood, are you?

"It's like I've always said, you're nothing but a wannabe hero. Pretending in daddy's blood soaked shadow to be anything more than what you are. A failure."

"I didn't fail to save your life."

Is he really going to go with that?

"From ONE vampire, and one that got the better of you on more than one occasion. I mean, you let me get kidnapped and tortured and then you rushed in at the end and saved me. Bravo. My sister may be an idiot, but she's taken on more than one vampire at a time who was trying to kill me or someone she actually loves and won. You barely managed it a single time."

"That wasn't my first time saving someone. I've even helped save the world."

I can't help but scoff at that.

"Oh good, you helped someone else do it. Big deal. Before I realized how stupid it was, I did it more than once. That's why when I get out of here, I'll actually fix it instead."

He watches me for a moment.

"You think you're getting out of here?"

Did he really just ask me that?

"Of course I am. It's stupid to think that it's going to end any other way. My idiot sister and her friends don't have the stomach to keep me here long term. At some point, their guilt is going to get the better of them for keeping someone they love locked up like this. They're going to get all weepy about it and the ones who want to let me go are going to turn against the ones that want me to stay locked up and in all the chaos and confusion, I'll get out and do what I want to do."

"Which is what exactly?"

I roll my eyes and sigh.

"Haven't you been listening? I'm going to fix things. I can fix it so that you never needed your dad's help to make you better. So you never had to go to that hell dimension, or any of the other crap that you've been through. I can fix it."

"My dad already tried that. It didn't really work out too well. And honestly? I prefer the way I am now, knowing all of it."

"I guess I know which side of the big argument you were on then, don't I?"

"What big argument?"

"The one that was happening outside between when Giles left and you came in here. I'm guessing the only reason you're in here now is because my idiot sister decided to get off her ass and order people around instead of letting them argue. Am I right?"

He gets quiet for a while. It makes me smile.

"Yeah, I figured. God they're so predictable. It's really pathetic. Didn't take them long to start coming apart, did it?"

"Which is exactly why we're bringing in my father. Get an outside perspective from someone who knows a thing or two about saving people."

After watching him for a moment, I can't help but let myself fall back to lay down, basically ignoring him.

"Whatever. It's just fun to know that I was right about you all along. You're only really good for one thing."

There's silence in the room for a while before eventually I hear him move to the door and leave.

So predictable.
