Sins of the Past Chapter 34

Breaching

I think they got the message by now.

I play with the gloves around my hands, looking for some way to get them off.

Even a group of people as slow and dumb as them has to be seeing the truth by now. They can't stop any of this from happening. I will get out and I will find a way to fix all of this. It's inevitable at this point. They've run out of options. The only thing left to do is let me go so that I can do it. None of them have it in them to have this end any other way.

It's their only choice and they know it. The only question is how long is it before they actually do it.

Hearing the door open, I can't help but smile at the thought of what's about to happen.

Who did they send in this time?

"Hey DK..."

The sound of her voice wipes the smile off my face.

"Hey Dawn..."

My hands clench into a fist at the sound of the other voice in the room.

"What the hell do you want?"

There's a silence in the room for a while before she speaks.

"We came to talk Dawnie."

Did they really just say that?

I finally look up to see my idiot sister and the bitch standing not far from each other in the room.

"So you finally admit it."

They look at each other like they're confused or something.

That's not a bad act they're doing.

"Admit what DK?"

"That you're together."

Silence follows that for a moment.

"That's not what we meant DK."

"We're not... we aren't together Dawnie."

I can't help but chuckle at their denial.

"Sure you're not."

"We're not DK."

"So you didn't sleep together? I just heard you wrong?"

They have nothing to say to that, trying to figure out how to respond by looking at each other.

"That's what I thought."

"Dawn, you never let us explain. You disappeared before we could tell you what really happened."

I scoff at them.

"Like I really needed a play by play of all the action."

I look between them for a second.

"Actually, now that I think about it, that might be fun."

They both look at me with a weirded out look.

"That's not what we meant Dawn."

"Oh come on, now you've got me curious. Tell me what happened, don't leave anything out."

It takes them a moment to say anything, looking at each other as they do.

And they say they aren't together. They can't even speak without the other's approval.

"Dawn, something strange is going on, and we only barely have any idea what it is."

"Red thinks it has to do with some kind of problem with reality."

Of course they are going this route.

"She says that whenever Faith and I are around each other, reality seems to shift."

Might as well stop them and skip ahead.

"So this is my fault?"

It takes my idiot sister a second to respond.

"That's not what we're saying Dawn. We don't think you're doing this."

"We talked to Connor about it and, from the way he tells it, you didn't have these powers when... things... started happening."

Well now this is getting good.

"You talked to Connor about your hook up? That's hot. Did he get a play by play?"

Again they can't seem to answer.

"No... we would never do that Dawnie."

That's disappointing, but it might be hotter that way.

"Okay then... tell me. I'd really like to hear all about it."

My idiot sister tries to explain but can't get the words out.

"For some reason, every time we touch..."

The bitch tries to finish things off.

"We get hot for each other... like, really hot for each other."

Interesting...

"How hot?"

They get this weirded out look again.

"That's... I'm not sure that's the most important thing right now Dawnie."

I have to scoff at that.

"Maybe not to you, but it is to me."

"DK..."

"Show me."

"Dawn, we're not going to..."

Skip ahead time again...

"You say you want me to believe you that this is all some big misunderstanding. Prove it to me. Show me what's going on."

There's silence from both of them, neither entirely sure what to do.

"Who knows... with my powers, maybe I could see a way to fix it."

"Dawn, we're here to talk to you. Not to play your game."

"You might be here to talk, but that doesn't mean I have to listen... at least not with some kind of reason anyway."

They stare at me, not sure how to feel about my proposal. It isn't long before the bitch is the first to cave.

"And if we do it... then... you'll believe us?"

My idiot sister objects.

"Faith..."

The bitch turns to my idiot sister.

"She doesn't have any reason to trust either of us B. What else are we supposed to do?"

They really have no clue what they're doing. It's incredibly pathetic.

"Not this. We can't do this."

I guess they need a little push.

"So you admit it. This whole 'reality bending' thing is just crap. It's an excuse to make me look like an idiot."

My idiot sister tries to push back.

"No, Dawn, it's not. We're telling the truth."

"Then prove it."

They look at each other, clearly uncomfortable.

This is all just way too easy.

The two of them move closer, trying to figure out how to avoid this. My idiot sister raises her hand like a high five. A few more steps and the bitch raises her hand just like the moron calling herself my sister. Suddenly, my sister stops and turns her attention to me.

"You promise you'll believe us."

"Depends on what I see."

Again they look at each other, hesitating, before eventually moving forward. It isn't long before they bring their hands together. Almost the instant they do, I can see sparks start to come off them where their hands meet.

What the hell is that?

Something starts to move behind them, like some kind of hole or something. Then I can hear them start to breath heavy. This goes on for a few more seconds before they pull their hands apart, stepping away from each other as they do.

They can't be serious.

"See Dawn? This is what we mean."

They don't actually expect me to believe that, do they?

"Seriously? You expect me to believe that?"

"DK..."

"That was nothing. For all I know, what I just saw is something Willow put together just to screw with me."

"What did you see Dawnie?"

Are they really trying this?

"I saw a light show that your redheaded witch cooked up to make me think that you're at something's mercy."

"Dawn..."

"You want me to believe you? Gotta give me something better than that."

Again they look at each other cautiously, apparently all but giving up on the idea of arguing with me. They start to close the distance between them and put their hands out to touch, this time lacing their fingers together and not stopping just close enough to touch hands. Again almost immediately, sparks start to fly between them, but not the metaphorical kind. As time goes on and their breathing gets heavier as they slowly get closer together, obviously trying to resist whatever's happening, some kind of gap starts forming behind them.

What the hell is that?

Whatever it is starts changing colours and it starts to look like some kind of weird window with things showing up inside it. Things like doors and stairs and trees and things that are moving too fast to get a look at. But the window keeps getting bigger the longer they stay connected. Suddenly, my idiot sister grabs the bitch and pulls them together, so their bodies are pressed together. That makes things start to change about them, but still moving too fast to catch much.

Their clothes and hair start to shift as my idiot sister and the bitch start pawing at each other, still trying to resist the obvious. Quick shifts make it hard but sometimes one or both of their hair gets short or changes colour or style just long enough to see it.

Wait... this can't be... oh god...

"No..."

My idiot sister tries to stop herself from kissing the bitch.

"Dawn? What... what are you..."

It can't be... this is so much worse than I thought.

I pull on my chains as hard as I can at the thought of what this means.

"You've got to be kidding me."

This has my moron of a sister finally pushing my ex away from her, putting some distance between them. Everything disappears the second they're apart.

"What is it Dawn?"

And I thought things couldn't be any worse if I wanted them to be. The universe keeps finding ways to make it worse though. God damn it...

"You just had to rub it in."

"DK, talk to us. What did you see?"

I can't help but laugh.

"A giant cosmic joke. As if my life needed any more of them."

They try to act like they care.

"Dawn... please..."

I tug at the chains again. The two of them just keep watching me, so I take a deep breath.

"Fine... it looks like I was right all along. I never had a chance at anything, especially not happiness."

"What are you talking about DK? Of course you..."

"You're literally made for each other."

"We told you Dawn, we're not into each other like that."

Right, that's so obviously a lie.

"So you're telling me that you don't feel anything at all?"

Silence follows from both of them. My idiot sister shifts uncomfortably at the question, and the bitch notices.

"B?"

"It's nothing."

My ex shifts a lot like my idiot sister.

I knew it. They were screwing with me all along. Acting like I actually had a chance at happiness when they knew I didn't. They've probably been sleeping together all along.

The bitch turns to me.

"Look, DK... no matter what Buffy might be feeling, I don't feel that way about her."

Right, because that doesn't sound like crap.

"Yet..."

"Dawn..."

"You literally just showed it to me. The universe is screaming at you and laughing at me."

"You don't know that DK."

"I just saw it. Stop denying it."

"I'm not denying anything DK. I don't think of your sister that way. I lo... I'm still in love with you."

I watch her for a while and it's obvious she doesn't mean it. That makes me roll my eyes at her.

"Very convincing. You almost sound like you believe it yourself."

She starts moving towards me and I pull back, moving away from them. It makes her stop.

"Dawn, I know you don't want to, but believe me it's true. I still love you."

"Listen to her Dawnie."

They're just going to keep pushing like they don't understand, but they do.

"Just let me go so I can get away from all this."

They look at each other.

"We want to Dawnie, we do."

"The problem is, we're not sure what happens if we do."

They still haven't gotten it?

"Your friends haven't told you? I made it pretty obvious so even they can figure it out."

My idiot sister starts to approach.

"They told us, but... what exactly are you going to do? Bring people back?"

They still don't get it.

"And do to them what Willow did to you? I'm not that cruel."

Again they look at each other.

"Then what?"

Do I really have to explain it to them?

"I'm going to fix it... make it so they never died."

The suggestion makes them look at each other.

"But... how would that even work? We'd just... go on knowing they used to be dead?"

God they don't get it.

"No, I would fix that too. Make it so everyone's happy and get exactly what they want."

After a moment, my idiot sister responds.

"That's really dangerous Dawn. How would you even know if you got it right?"

"Because all I have to do is think it and it happens. So even if I did make a mistake, I could just fix it."

My ex crouches down to my level as she speaks.

"And you don't see how that can go incredibly wrong?"

Is that really what they're going to go with?

"I'm not an idiot. Things aren't going to be perfect, but at least it will be better then what we have now."

She stares at me for a while.

"I'm really sorry Dawn. I know that I played a part in making you feel the way that you feel now. Things didn't end well between us and at least part of that was my fault. I should've worked harder to make sure you didn't hate me when you went off to college. Maybe we wouldn't be in this situation if I had."

My idiot sister does the same, crouching down.

"Faith's right Dawn. We both failed you. We thought if we just left you alone, that you'd be okay. That at some point you'd make it through and find your way back. But we were wrong, and I'm sorry about that. I should've done more to help you."

"We're here now though, and we're going to help you through it."

They really don't get it.

"I'm not some damsel in distress that you need to save. That's what you and Connor and his dad and everyone else doesn't seem to get. You don't have to fix me."

That makes them look at each other before standing up and moving toward the door. As they do, they just have to get in a last word.

"I'm sorry Dawn."

"I'm sorry too."

Then my ex opens the door, letting her lover go first, then looking back at me one more time before leaving herself.

I thought they would never leave. Of course, knowing them they're probably going to go straight for their friends and start talking about how to reinforce the spell or whatever they have on me to keep me in here. There's no way they're going to let me go when they still think they can save me.

I turn my attention to my chains, trying to do something to take them off.

But I meant what I said, I'm not here to be saved.
