The next evening, Nora had done as she promised. After getting dressed for the evening, Nora poofed herself and Linnie down to the Pointy Crown, which was surprisingly slow despite Valentine's day coming up. Well..it was possible that people were waiting until the day of to eat here. Nora did see a lot of reservations for that date on the website.
After they had been seated, Nora removed her suit jacket an placed in behind her chair, looking Linnie who smiled sweetly, but sincerely at her.
"Nora, you really didn't have to go through the trouble..I.I'm so lucky to have met such a wonderful woman like you."
"Yeah I know sweetheart. I'm pretty great, aren't I?", Nora asked, last night's chipper mood carrying over.
"You deserve the world. I don't know what the baby and I would be without you.", Linnie sighed as he rubbed her baby bump, until he noticed Nora's somewhat disgusted face.
"Eh..not out in public, Linnie. That's disgusting."
"Oh, sorry dear. I'm just so excited for the birth of our child-"
"YOUR child, Linnie."
"My child. Oh, I've been thinking about names while you were at work this afternoon. What do you think about Darren for a boy?"
"Linnie, I really don't care, ok? This is OUR night, not some brats. Just quit talking about the baby or children for once and just relax. Your life doesn't have to revolve around the baby."
"I-I know but-"
"Just this once. That's all I ask Linnie. It's not that hard."
"I..ok then.", Linnie's voice whimpered, but still smiling as to not put Nora in a bad mood. "I'll be quiet. I would do anything in the world for you."
"Yes yes I'm aware.", Nora nodded, looking up and down at Linnie's outfit, "Those are some lovely pearls. Didn't know you were the jewelry kind of person."
"Well, normally I'm not, but I figured I'd break these out for the evening. Make myself all prettied up for you."
"I gotta say, Linnie. I dunno if it's the alcohol talking..but it sure as hell works."
Before their dinners arrived, Nora and Linnie got closer together and kissed each other on the tips, Nora tracing and rubbing her fingers on Linnie's waist and things, making him squirm slightly before repositioning himself. She moved her hands on his chest, trying hard to avoid his baby bump, and massaged it with her thumb, making his blush bubblegum pink.
"Stop Nora! We're out right now!", Linnie laughed once the two separated, his heels clicking behind him "Ooh, I got to hit the little guy's room. I'll be back darling."
Little guy's room? How old was he? 4? Oh whatever, at least it gave Nora some peace to enjoy her drink, a heavy champaign served in a wine glass instead of champaign (Nora had requested it to be served this way). She got up and went to the bar in the center of the restaurant to ask for a refill, taking a stool seat while the woman next to her looked like she was about to fall over.
"Oh don't mind me..BURP..I'm just havin a ladies night. By myself..since no one else wants to.", the woman slurred, making Nora arch an eyebrow. She knew that feeling all to well, but the woman's sudden openness interested Nora.
"Ladies night huh? I don't see anyone else around you."
"Well..it's just me. My stupid boyfriend broke up with me, and he moved out not too long ago. I figured I would still see him around but so far, he won't even look in my direction."
"Damn..men, am I right?"
"Oh no doubt about it. They always think they're so much better than us and ..and they can be so damn sensitive and emotional sometimes."
"Tell me about it. You ever dealt with a pregnant man."
"No. Not yet. Don't plan on it."
"It's a living hell. My boyfriend cries a lot in the middle of the night, and tells me to get his ridiculous shit from the website. It's annoying at hell.", Nora vented before her relaxed mood returned, "It's a good thing he's so pretty. Otherwise, I would have turned him into a bug or something. Give him an improvement."
"Haha. Yeah, pregnant guys are annoying. I hate having to ride the bus and take a seat after a long work's day, only for some pregnant guy to hop in the bus and take a seat that doesn't belong to him", the woman said, watching as Nora saw Linnie leave the bathroom, trying to relocate their table. "That your man?"
"Yeah."
"Damn..you're so lucky. My ex wasn't near as tall, or beautiful as your boyfriend is, and his little reading glasses are kinda cute. Well, I guess I can't blame you for still wanting a man, especially if they look like they can pass off for a supermodel agency."
"Keep your eyes to yourself. He's already taken."
"Yeah yeah I know..I wasn't gonna try anything. Relax. I'm done with men. They piss me off."
"Really? What'd yours do?"
"We met up at the park, but I don't remember us doing anything interesting. It was out of the blue too. As soon as I knelt down to propose, he immediately hit me with the stupid "I want to break up" line. What kind of horseshit is that?"
"Yeah, that's messed up. If Linnie ever were to do that to me, I'd smack him so hard his face would be upside down. You know, I don't take shit for no one, not even my boyfriend."
"A piece of advice to you..uh..what's your name?"
"Nora."
"A piece of advice to you, Nora. Most likely, he's not with you for the love, he's with you because of the money and you had so obviously gotten him pregnant."
"I told him to cover up!"
"Well, he obviously didn't do a good job of it. He looks like a giant black hole in that dress of his. It's…actually kinda cute
"Hey, knock it off! Right now! I've won bar fights before you know!"
"Ok ok! Geez! I was just complimenting him. Anyways, I would watch out for a guy's true motives. You never know when they'll try to use and abuse you.", the woman said, getting up from her seat, "Welp, I'm gonna head home. I can't stay here. Have a good night."
Nora waved as she made her way back to hers and Linnie's table, her mood somewhat crushed. Now that they were having a child, Nora was confident that Linnie wouldn't leave, due to his beliefs that a child should have two loving parents, but the more she thought about it, the more selfish she thought Linnie became.
He had mentioned he wanted kids on their first date, and look...he's getting what he wanted. It was only a matter of time before he left her, and forced her to face her dark pit of loneliness and depression once more. Nora frowned as she slammed the glass cup on the table, ignoring Linnie trying to talk to her.
"Nora? Nora? What's the matter? Was the food bad? Did I do something?", Linnie asked, twiddling his fingers nervously. She remained quiet, more focused on her thoughts that anything that was happening outside, ignoring Linnie's uncomfortable glances as he awkwardly finished his food.
Was it too late? Was she making a mistake? Though not as much as she loved herself, she did love how beautiful he was and how he was so elegant and gentle. She could almost fall asleep listening to his soft, calming voice. The only problem was, she wasn't exactly in love with his ambitions, how she didn't care that he wanted kids or wanted to one day become a kindergarten or preschool teacher. Every time he brought it up, or something else preachy, Nora would either tell him to shut up or roll her eyes at him.
The woman at the bar reminded Nora of someone, but couldn't exactly figure out who, yet through their miserable state, they looked more free and more independent, something that Nora valued dearly. But now that Linnie had moved in and forced her to have a child with him (in Nora's words), Nora couldn't help but wonder if she was stuck. That this pregnancy was a set back from her finding someone she truly loved. That, and the fact that she had spent so much money of him; Linnie was essentially becoming a spoiled brat. Nora knew she liked Linnie, but wasn't sure if she loved him, or was just merely desperate.
The rest of the dinner was silent and awkward, with Nora covering the bill before poofing home, headed to bed as Linnie lied down on the right side. Throughout the night, Nora herself began to toss and turn, occasionally glancing at the man beside her. She thought, what had I gotten myself into?
