Fatherhood

A quick unplanned one-shot that spawned from Maya's (AnonymousDH) tweet about Darvey's baby wrapping her fingers around Harvey's hand.

It's the first moment they have had to themselves since their little peanut had entered the world. Donna watches as Harvey gently picks Lily up from her bassinet, and settles next to her.

As he does, the movement causes Lily to shuffle under the blanket, her little arm slipping out of its confines and Harvey instinctively moves his free hand to take it, intending to tuck it back under the cloth.

But before he can, their daughter's tiny fist closes around his thumb, and Harvey stops, the sight mesmerizing him. His daughter's fingers barely reach the side of his thumb, but her grip is strong and he feels his heart pick up its pace, the intensity of this moment touching a part of him that he'd never thought he had.

And then, Lily settles back into her deep slumber, her little hand never loosening its grip, while her face turns towards his chest.

And Harvey feels his heart burst wide open.

All those times, he'd heard Gordon talk about the first time he'd truly felt like a father and for the first time, Harvey gets it.

It's primal. It's all-encompassing. This instinctive love that he feels for this child, that was created out of a different, but no less deep love between him and Donna.

And, as if on cue, he hears Donna let out a small sob next to him. He turns to look at her, her eyes full and watery just as his own are.

"You were born to do this," she whispers, bringing her own palm to curl around his and Lily's. "You were born to be a father."

Harvey doesn't reply, but stares at their hands, and listens as she continues.

"She already feels so safe and secure in her daddy's arms. She knows you will never let anyone hurt her."

"How do you know that?" his asks hoarsely.

"Because it's how I feel when you hold me."

Please let me know what you think.
