Sounds Like An Adventure ~ Chapter 5
"Can we eat after hunting the Wendy?" Kite asked. The boy was clutching his stomach with one hand while he shuffled along behind the group, his other arm hung by his side barely keeping hold of the small cutlass.
"We're not hunting!" Peter snapped over his shoulder from the front of their congregation. He made a show of exaggerated searching gestures as he added, "We're tracking."
"Besides we only just finished breakfast, pig," Jasp grumbled, rolling his eyes.
Icarus jabbed the other older boy in the side before picking some berries off of a nearby bush. He paused to allow Navi to pass him by so he could hand them to Kite, "We'll eat a proper meal later, okay?"
The younger boy smiled wide as a silent thank you, accepting the snack to tide him over until lunch.
Todd giggled and cherruped, "It's almost like a game of hide and seek!"
"Yes!" Peter cried, grinning widely at the shortest in the squad, "That's exactly what this is! Wendy is playing hide and seek with us and she's very good at it so we need to keep an eye out for her!"
Todd, Whimsey, Navi and Kite cheered, while Jasp and Icarus smiled at the idea of making this a game.
Navi ran on ahead, "I'm gonna find her first and win!"
"What?" Todd was surprised that this had turned into a competition.
Kite, on the other hand, was prepared and apparently rejuvenated by the mere idea that he could either win or be beaten in a game as he chased after his best friend, "Not if I find her first!"
"Winner gets to choose the next adventure!" Peter announced as he flew after the two troublemakers.
Whimsey turned to Todd and held his hand out, "Wanna team up?"
The small boy smiled sweetly at Whim and nodded, accepting the offer with his much smaller hand. They turned immediately left instead of straight ahead where the others had raced off.
Icarus turned to Jasp and, without a word, he just lifted a brow as his silent question. Jasp scoffed, turning immediately right, "Not a chance in hell! I'll win this on my own."
The eldest sighed with a roll of his eyes and moved forward vering just slightly left of Peter and the best friends.
Maybe she had an almost perfect sense of direction or - more likely - Neverland had directed her course back to the Willow Tree base. The wilting branches parted like show curtains as she approached them and fell back shrouding the area beneath their thick veil, after she crossed their threshold. Wendy slipped down into the den at the base of the tree and crawled back into her underground-underwater base.
She stretched her arms wide and finally let out a breath of relief finally feeling safe that she had made it without being chased down or found out. A soft bubble of laughter escaped.
But before long her eyes strayed to the leftover fruit on the table and she remembered Asteria kicking over a grape. Her lips frowned as her eyes glanced around the small room hoping to see her sitting on a shelf or hovering around in the air nearby.
The young woman sighed deeply as she stepped over to the cot and fell into a sitting position. Not a pixie in sight.
Not even a full day in Wonderland and she had already angered her faerie guide.
"I was just curious," Wendy mumbled aloud to the quiet of the den.
She frowned at the ground, thinking on the reason as to why they had had… well actually, they hadn't even exactly argued about it. Wendy had only asked the mermaids a question about leaving Neverland which a seemingly irritated Asteria had refused to translate. This led her to believe that there must be some way of returning home that Asteria either doesn't want to tell her or isn't allowed to tell her. It didn't really matter, she didn't want to go home exactly - it was just for curiosity's sake, truth be told. However in her own annoyance she had been rather rude when speaking about the faerie to the evil Captain Hook - to her face, no less!
No wonder she furiously flew away!
Groaning, Wendy threw herself back on the bed in frustration and frowned deeply up at the ceiling. She would have to find and apologise to the fae lady tomorrow when she would have more daylight hours to search with. There was no use starting her search now as the sun was beginning to set and would soon disappear from the sky. Of course, in Wonderland, that didn't mean that it would be total darkness; what with the luminous flowers, fireflies and nightlife of most of the fae. However Wendy felt it would be easier and much safer to search while the sun was high in the sky and the nocturnal wildlife was fast asleep.
The woman maneuvered her body around so that she was lying on her side. She brought her hands up to aid in propping her head alongside the pillow and suddenly her eyes widened at what caught her attention.
Wendy shot up to sitting, grabbing at one of the cuffs with her alternate hand and trailing her eyes along the sleeve of the all too familiar red coat that she still donned.
Shoot!
Knowing of the Captain of the Jolly Roger's pride in his attire, Hook would probably be rather upset if she were to casually discard or recklessly snag the eccentric coat that he so often flaunted. He would also - more so - like for it to be returned at her earliest convenience. She would have to attempt to place it somewhere noticeable near the pirate ship but not so close that she would also be seen.
That could also be a task left for tomorrow.
For now she shrugged the garment off of her shoulders and placed it at the foot of her bed before settling back down and getting comfortable. Wendy wasn't sure if she dreamt or not but it did not cause her alarm. How could you know if you were dreaming when you lived in such a dreamland? When everyday was vivid and full of adventure and chaotic energy.
Standing at the helm of his magnificent ship, Captain James Hook stared back at the expanse of the great Neverland with narrowed eyes and a million stars beside a luminous moon for a backdrop. The main deck below him was sparse, save for two of his men keeping watch tonight, with the rest of the crew in the bowels of the ship resting and preparing for another day ahead of them.
A cool ocean breeze blew past, taking the ends of his unruly curls and the tails of his heavy maroon coat. It was not the one he had begun the day in however a certain lass had decided to run off into the jungle with his favourite still slung around her person. The pirate captain wondered if he were to ever see the piece of clothing again. He wasn't the most favourable among others and so it would not surprise him if she saw fit to ruin the material to mere shreds just to spite him. It would be a childish act and yet he was faced with the little miscreants so often that it was only natural for him to expect this kind of reaction and behaviour from another.
Wendy Darling. Oh, how she had grown. Well, physically at least. To want to return to such a beautiful hellscape meant she was still young of mind and naive to life and all of its treachery. Not that he would have mistreated her had she accepted his offer of dinner. She was, however, smart enough to acknowledge that she would not have left his sight once the meal was over. He would have set the ship to sail to ensure she remained on the vessel until he could work out a solid plan of action in which she could be used against the devil child that was Pan.
He would not like to harm her - at the very least not intentionally nor fatally. Just use her as bait to draw the troublesome boy out and into the open, aiding the Captain's hand by exploiting a weakness the child once had for the young woman.
The headstrong girl tried to act as if it wouldn't bother her so much if Pan wasn't as interested in her person as before. But Hook saw through the tiny cracks in her facade. She still cared a great deal for him and their childhood escapades, so much that he was willing to bet his left hand that the boy was all she had thought about for however many years had passed since her last trip to Neverland. She seemed to think he might still offer her the same attention he did when she were not a woman but a mere girl.
It was sad, truly… but somewhat understandable the Captain silently admitted.
Either way, she was here in Neverland and here to stay in this forever-land. Forever was a long time and, even if the little chit was careful, they would cross paths eventually. Hook would lie in wait; while he did not enjoy patience, he possessed enough when he knew the outcome.
This was yet another chance to win this age-old war. He hoped that this was not another chance that slipped through his fingertips.
It's not a very long chapter but its an update :)
