Chapter 26

Elphaba wanted to throw up. And not just because she was in a car and six months pregnant; she was going to see Nessarose.

Last week, Fiyero had found her crying on the couch after she'd had a phone call with her younger sister. It was the first time they had talked in more than two years. She'd cried because of all the emotions that had hit her at once. She'd been dumbfounded that Nessarose had actually managed to reach her, surprised that her father had left her something in his will (the whole reason they were making a visit to Munchkinland in the first place), and above all, hurt. Nessa had spoken to her as if she was a complete stranger. That had stung. What had sent her over the edge was that when Elphaba had said 'I love you', Nessarose had hung up. That had hurt more than any insult she had ever received about her skin.

"Why am I doing this?" Elphaba whispered.

"Hmm?" Fiyero grasped her hand, keeping his eyes on the road.

"The whole reason I moved to the Vinkus was because I never wanted to come back to Munchkinland again. Seeing all these familiar buildings is filling me with dread."

"We can always turn around if you want to," he reminded her. He hadn't been too fond of the idea of coming to Munchkinland either.

Elphaba seriously considered this option. But no. Not only did she need to settle what was in her father's will, she had to settle things with Nessarose, too. "I'll be fine," eventually.

Fiyero lifted her hand up to his lips and kissed her knuckles. Elphaba smiled at him.

"Mama? Jooz?" Zianna spoke from her car seat.

"Oh," Elphaba opened the small backpack on her lap and pulled out a yellow, plastic sippy cup with apple juice. She handed it back to Zianna, the slight incline of the seat making it easier for the little girl to reach her cup. "Here you go, baby."

"What do you say?" Fiyero prompted.

"Fank you!"

Elphaba laughed. "You're very welcome."

Yes, this trip was probably going to suck more than anything. But she knew that having Fiyero and Zianna with her was going to make this a hell of a lot easier than if she had come here alone.

"You sure you don't want me to go in with you?" Fiyero asked, holding Zianna at his hip. He could tell Elphaba felt very unsteady and nervous.

She nodded. "I'm sure."

He was skeptical, but not wanting to make her more uncomfortable than she already was, he let her know where to find him after she was done and kissed her forehead. She watched him walk away until he was completely out of sight, then turned to the closed door. She took a deep breath, and knocked.

"Come in."

Elphaba opened the door to the Governor's office. She had so many memories of opening the door in fear as a child. It normally meant she was in trouble and was about to get scolded or hit. But it wasn't her father sitting in the chair this time. It was Nessarose; a single paper on the desk. Her little sister hadn't changed much physically, but she had changed enough to look just a little older, more mature. The govenor looked up, and her eyes widened at seeing a very pregnant Elphaba.

"Dear Unnamed God," Nessarose whispered.

"Hello, Nessa."

"What was it?"

Elphaba was confused. "What?"

"How did that happen?" Nessarose looked Elphaba directly in the eye for the first time in years. "Did you have to sell yourself for money? Do you even know whose it is?"

Tears stung Elphaba's eyes. 'Sell herself'? Why would Nessarose even - oh. Right. Because the only way someone like Elphaba could get pregnant was because she'd resorted to prostitution. Now above everything else, Elphaba was angry.

"Yes, I know the father," she said through her teeth, and that was all Nessarose was getting. Unless she asked, Elphaba wasn't going to give her details.

"I know it's too much to hope for, but please tell me you're at least engaged.

"Married."

Nessarose's eyes widened again. "Because of-"

"No," Elphaba snapped. Yes, Nessa; she thought; someone actually loves me for me, something you and Father couldn't even do.

"Ok," Nessarose whispered, slightly taken aback at Elphaba raising her voice. "Take a seat then. Let's talk business."

"Let's," Elphaba sat down. The tension in the room was thick.

Nessarose pushed the paper on the desk closer to Elphaba. "I just turned 23 so everything in the will goes into effect. Father left you anything in the house that was already in your possession."

"Basically nothing," Elphaba said before she could stop herself. Why was she not surprised? Of course Frex wouldn't have left her anything. Everything in the mansion that she owned, which had been very little to begin with, she had taken with her the moment she'd left Munchkinland. Nothing in this house belonged to her.

"There's still a couple of things in your room-"

"Basement."

"-and they're yours. Sign the paper and you can take them."

"I don't want anything."

Nessarose sighed, she could feel a headache forming. Her hand shook slightly as she grabbed the paper in front of Elphaba and placed it in a folder. "Then you'll have to wait about an hour. I need to have an attorney officially change the document," she fidgeted. She hadn't expected Elphaba to have to be here anymore than 30 minutes. Having her older sister here was even more uncomfortable than she'd thought it would be.

"Fine."

"I'll call for you."

Elphaba nodded and slowly stood up, using the desk to support herself. Once she closed the door behind her, Nessarose pulled at her hair, she'd wanted an apology. After all, Elphaba had practically abandoned her. But Elphaba had changed. And apparently, she was married and pregnant.

Nessarose shook her head. That had to have been a lie. Elphaba was just trying to protect her dignity, and who could blame her. If she had stooped so low in order to get money, she probably wanted to hang on to it as much as possible. Why else would she have been so vague about her pregnancy and supposed marriage? She just hoped Elphaba didn't have some disease.

Elphaba found Fiyero where he said he'd be, in the living room one of the maids had greeted them in. She thanked Oz that Zianna was asleep, she was laying on a small pullout sofa chair. Tears were already falling from Elphaba's eyes by the time she'd reached the doorway.

Fiyero turned around when he heard her footsteps and quickly stood at seeing tears running down her face.

"Elphaba," he whispered and a sob escaped her lips. His heart broke.

Fiyero strode over to his wife and led her to the couch he'd been sitting on. He cradled her in his arms.

"Sh," he cooed and her arms tightened around him. He didn't like that recently, ever since Nessarose called her, Elphaba seemed to be more stressed and nervous. She was crying a lot, and he hated that he couldn't seem to do anything to make her feel better. As much as he wanted to press her for details, he knew he wouldn't get any answers until Elphaba was ready to talk. He wiped her tears away and rubbed her back up and down.

Eventually, once her breathing steadied, Elphaba told him what she and Nessarose had talked about. It hadn't even been much of a conversation from what she was telling him. Her sister had just asked her to sign a paper for some of Elphaba's old stuff. She hadn't wanted them and now they had to wait for a bit so a lawyer could make some changes.

There had to be more to it. Elphaba wouldn't be so upset over just that. His thoughts were confirmed when she spoke again.

"When," she swallowed, "when I walked in…she was so…shocked…at seeing that I was pregnant," she rubbed her belly. "And even more shocked when I told her I was married. She…she assumed I had resorted…to prostituting." Elphaba choked out.

She could tell by the look on his face that Fiyero was angry. He probably wanted to storm out and say a thing or two directly to Nessarose's face. She wrapped her arms around his torso; she needed him to stay with her right now.

"I know it's probably silly to cry about it, I shouldn't have expected any less of her. But…it just hurts."

"Love, just," Fiyero let out a frustrated sigh, Oz, he so badly wanted to give the governor a piece of his mind. "Just don't pay any attention to it," he knew it wasn't much, but he didn't know what else he could do for her right now. He placed a tender kiss on Elphaba's forehead. "What can I do to make you feel better?"

If she heard his question, she chose not to answer and asked her own.

"Am I really that revolting that it's hard to believe I'm married and-"

"Hey!" He cut her off rather harshly, cupping her face with his hands. "I never want to hear that word from you when describing yourself. Understand?" He whispered that last part, calming himself down.

Elphaba nodded, trying to dry away her tears.

Fiyero kissed her cheek. "I don't know what bit her or what's up her ass," Elphaba's lips curled up ever so slightly, "but you are the most beautiful, caring, amazing person alive. I'm so proud," Fiyero pressed his forehead against hers, "Oz, so proud, lucky, and incredibly happy that you're my wife. And I didn't know that I could possibly be any happier until the day you told me you were pregnant." her hand unconsciously trailed to his hair. "I love you." he said, leaning into her touch.

"I love you."

Nessa stopped her wheelchair when hearing a voice come from the living room. Her eyes widened slightly. Elphaba was on the couch, with a rather handsome man, and…was that a kid on the sofa? It looked like Elphaba was crying, her hand in the man's hair, his arm around her shoulders, and their foreheads pressed together.

When Elphaba had said she had a husband, Nessarose hadn't actually thought she was serious. Someone actually married Elphaba? A strange feeling coursed through her body. How could her green sister have a husband? No, not possible. There was no way he actually-

"Fiyero," Elphaba choked out then started hyperventilating. Her arms went to her stomach, cradling it gently. She grunted and the man, Fiyero she assumed, placed his hands on her belly as well.

"Sh," He whispered, then pulled her closer.

He rubbed his nose along Elphaba's face. He gently tilted her head back and whispered his love for her before his lips descended on her neck, the noises of his lips against her neck reached Nessarose's ears. Elphaba's hiccups became soft sighs. Almost moans. He was calming her down.

Nessarose watched the entire exchange, unable to tear her eyes away at how they were with each other. She bit the inside of her cheek.

He pulled away and dried her tears. Even from the doorway Nessarose could see with how much tenderness and love this man was looking at her sister. Her green sister. No one had ever looked at her like that.

"Feel better, love?" He asked.

Elphaba swallowed and nodded, taking a couple deep breaths. "Much," she looked down at her stomach and caressed the big belly softly. "They do, too."

'They'? There was more than one baby in there? Nessarose could taste blood inside her mouth. She'd always wanted a big family. Elphaba seemed to be living a life Nessarose had wanted for herself.

The blonde man leaned down and placed one two, three four kisses on Elphaba's belly. He cradled her like she was the most fragile, precious thing on Earth.

"I love you, Fae."

"I love you, too, Yero."

He pressed his lips to hers and Nessarose looked away in disgust and wheeled herself the rest of the way to her room.

This wasn't fair.

Elphaba pulled Fiyero by his neck, deepening their kiss and sighing into his mouth. Oz, she felt so much more relaxed. Leave it to Fiyero to make her feel better. She slowly pulled away when she heard Zianna stir. He kept nipping at her lips.

"Fiyero," Elphaba pressed a hand to his chest, "Zia's waking up."

"And?" He peppered her jaw with kisses. "Not like she hasn't seen us kiss before."

Elphaba laughed. Fiyero felt a tap on his knee, and there was Zianna, rubbing her tired eyes. He wordlessly picked her up and she placed her ear on Elphaba's stomach. "When they coming?" Zianna asked.

"Less than three months, honey," Elphaba answered, running her fingers through Zianna's hair. Her baby was still very sleepy. "Shouldn't be too long now."

"Mhm," Zianna seemed satisfied with that answer. She laid her head on Fiyero's lap and fell asleep again almost instantly.

"She's exhausted," Fiyero chuckled.

"That makes two of us," Elphaba yawned.

Fiyero pulled Elphaba to lay her head on his shoulder. "Rest."

"But I have to-"

"I'll wake you up," he knew Elphaba was extremely tired when she didn't argue any further and closed her eyes instead.

"Love you," she muttered, hugging him tightly.

He smiled and kissed her forehead. "I love you, too."

Personally, I'm not too satisfied with this chapter. Tell me your thoughts! :)
