"Fly... who was that?" Honey panted as she leant against the wall.
Fly was sat against the front door, staring into nothing. He looked traumatised, as if he'd seen a ghost. Honey noticed how terrified he was, she didn't like seeing him like this. Honey sat down next to him on the floor, not saying a word but placing her hand on his knee reassuringly. He looked down at her hand on his knee, her touch bringing him back down to earth.
"It's okay." She whispered. "We're safe. Whoever that was can't get to us."
"It... it can't be him, surely. He's dead, I saw him die." Fly shook his head.
"Huh? Who? Who died?"
"Joe, remember?"
"Oh yes, that fish. But I didn't know you watched him die. Why didn't you tell me Fly? Bottling things in will affect you even more."
"Because I never thought I'd ever watch a human die in my life. I didn't think it'd matter."
"Of course it matters, it matters to me. Wait... he was human? I thought he was a-" Honey realised what Fly meant, he must've took the potion to become human.
"Oh Fly... but if you saw him die, it can't be him. It must've been someone else just walking."
"But it looked like him, his shadow looked exactly like how his human form was."
Fly was lost in his own thoughts as silence crept between the two of them. Honey pulled him into her arms as he silently sobbed into her chest, he was a lot taller than Honey so he had to slide down to meet her level. She stroked his hair as his arms wrapped around her.
"She is my safe place." He thought once again.
He could hear her heart beat as his head used her chest as a pillow, she could feel his tears dampen her skin which made her feel more sad. If she could, she'd take away all the trauma he experienced.
"Honey?" Fly muttered.
"Yes?"
He straightened himself up next to her, looking into her eyes.
She was beautiful, her eyes glistening in the moonlight which reflected through the front door window. He wanted to tell her how much she meant to him, how much he cared and especially how much he loves her. But something was stopping him, something always was stopping him. He was scared she wouldn't feel the same, but little did he know that she loves him too. Ever since she was 14.
"I-..."
"Yes?" Honey spoke in anticipation.
"I... I don't know what I'd do without you Honey. Thank you." He said nervously.
"You're welcome..." She looked down shyly, kind of disappointed that Fly wasn't going to say what she hoped to hear.
Maybe she got signals wrong, maybe he doesn't feel the same. But he did, he really did.
"Do you want to sleep in my bed and I'll sleep on the floor?" Fly offered.
"Why don't we just sleep down here?" She questioned.
"Yes, but Stella will most probably jump on you at 7am."
"That's fine by me." She chuckled.
Fly helped Honey up from the floor, leading her to the cupboard that stored extra pillows and blankets. He gave her a pillow and blanket for her to settle on the sofa opposite the other one that Fly chose to sleep on. The sofas were big enough for 2 people to lie next to each other, but they slept on different sofas. Fly was desperate to lie next to her, so he could feel safe but he knew his parents may get the wrong idea if they found them lying next to each other asleep. Honey took her ribbon out of her hair, brushing though it with her fingers to tame her tangles. He admired her as he lay there snuggled in his blanket, before she got in to her blanket on the sofa opposite.
"Fly, are you okay?" Honey asked with concern.
"I am now, are you?"
She wanted to snuggles next to him, but she thought he wouldn't want to either.
"Just feel lonely here on my own." She nervously chuckled, thankfully Fly couldn't see her bright red cheeks.
Fly got up quickly with the blanket still wrapped around him and shuffled towards the sofa Honey was lying on. He lay next to her and suddenly she lay her head on Flys chest whilst wrapping her arms around him, which he didn't expect her to do.
"Your hearts beating incredibly fast, are you sure you're okay Fly?"
She had no idea she was the reason his heart was beating so fast.
"Uhh yeah I'm fine." His face was burning, but it soon settled after he wrapped his arms around her too.
She shuffled closer to him, closing the gap between them. They were now tightly compacted in embrace and they both felt at peace.
"Goodnight Honey."
"Goodnight Fly."
Stella came downstairs with her mother at 7am to get her some breakfast, to see Fly and Honey snuggled up fast asleep on the sofa.
"Don't wake them just yet sweetie, they're probably tired." Lisa told Stella.
"I won't mommy."
Bill came down the stairs just after, Lisa waving Bill over to her to look at the pair fast asleep.
"Let's hope Fly asks her to be his girlfriend, hey?" He said wrapping his arms round Lisa. "Reminds me of us at that age."
"It certainly does." She replied, before guiding him and Stella along to the kitchen.
Two hours went by, Honey opened her eyes before stretching and yawning causing Fly to wake up.
"Good morning." He smiled.
"Good morning Fly. Did you sleep ok?"
"I did actually, for the first time in years."
"Well that's good, it's a start."
Chuck came into the living room from the kitchen. "Morning you two."
They whipped their heads into Chucks direction.
"Oh hello Chuck, when did you get here?" Fly asked.
"I got here an hour ago, you both looked cosy." He grinned.
This caused them both to blush.
"We went to the fair last night but someone followed us home. Fly has a feeling it might be someone you both know." Honey told Chuck.
Chuck looked confused with a raised brow, thinking of who it could be.
"I swear it was Joe, Chuck. I have a sick feeling he's not dead." Fly worried.
"But that's impossible, there wasn't a way out of the pipes-" Chuck explained but froze, he knew there could've been a possibility that Joe survived.
"Fly... was Joe completely human when he drank the potion?" He asked calmly, trying to contain his worry.
"He looked human, close enough human. He had tumours growing from his skin. But I noticed he had slits under his jaw line."
"Oh no... Fly, those slits were gills. When a biological fish takes the potion, they don't transform correctly. His gills would still work in water and he'd have human lungs, if he covered those gills he could survive on land. I'm sorry but, maybe it could've been Joe." Chuck nervously explained.
Honey and Fly looked at each other in shock.
"But why would he be following us? Especially Fly?" Honey questioned.
"Well he wasn't exactly happy, it was like we ruined his empire. Maybe he's trying to find us to get more potion or for revenge." Fly suggested.
"We need to tell the Professor this." Chuck insisted.
"Why don't you and Chuck go and see him? I need to go home and take a shower anyways." Honey suggested.
"Will I see you later?" Fly asked.
"If you want to." She smiled before scuffing his hair up playfully.
Honey got up from the sofa and took a walk to the kitchen, she spoke to Bill and Lisa to thank them for letting her stay. She came back to the living room to put her shoes on as Fly and Chuck came up with conspiracies as to why Joe would be following them. What could he possibly want?
"Goodbye you two, see you later." Honey called out before shutting the door behind her.
Fly made sure she had left, before turning back to Chuck.
"If Joe has unfinished business Chuck I can't drag Honey into this. She doesn't need the stress."
"She won't be, if we do encounter Joe we will make sure Honey isn't involved with anything."
Fly nodded anxiously as he played with his hands.
"You like her... don't you?" Chuck asked.
Fly's and Chuck's eyes met, the answer was all over Flys face.
"How long?" Chuck was genuinely interested, he could tell there had always been something there between them.
"Two years ago, ever since we were 14."
"Just tell her how you feel, maybe at the Professors presentation?"
"But what if Honey doesn't feel the same?"
"I'm not stupid Fly, I can tell she feels the same way."
Fly smiled.
"Come on lover boy, let's go and tell the Professor about Joe." Chuck instructed.
The boys walked into the Professors lab, he was working on his presentation speech for a few days time.
"Ah, hello boys! Can I help you?"
"Professor, I think we've got a big problem." Fly spoke shakily.
"What's wrong?" He asked in anticipation.
"We don't think Joe died that day in the pipes. Fly explained he looked human but there were slits under his jaw, but they're gills. That means he would've been able to escape and if he were to be on land, all he'd have to do is cover his gills." Chuck told him.
He stared at the boys blankly, before rubbing his head with hand.
"Are you telling me this because you're both scared?" Professor Mackrill asked the both of them.
"Because I think he's following me. I've seen him." Fly answered.
"I think you need to finally tell me what happened in those 48 hours you were fish." Professor Mackrill demanded, pulling a chair up for the both of them to his desk.
The boys explained what happened in full detail. A fish empire, a madly intellectual fish who wanted to take over and is now known to possibly be alive and Fly nearly dying. He didn't think it was that bad, but the Professor was relieved that they told him about the fish that have took the potion in the first place. Now, he was just thankful he got the generator sorted so it could spread antidote around the ocean without any pollution or environment impact.
"I didn't know it was that bad, your time in the ocean." Mackrill said to the boys. "But I'm glad you told me about all the intelligent fish in the first place. The generator I fitted into the ocean will turn them all back to normal."
"Do you think we could be in danger? If Joe is alive?" Chuck asked.
"Make sure you're not out alone at night time or in quiet places. We just have to hope he doesn't do anything, that's if he is indeed alive." Mackrill instructed.
The boys nodded and said goodbye to the Professor before leaving his lab until they see him again for his presentation.
Leaving the cave, they noticed something was off. A shark was very close to shore, circling the cliff of the cave that Fly used to fish on. They didn't try to think too deeply of it, but it ate at their minds more as they started to feel as if they were being watched. They both looked at each other nervously, knowing exactly what they were both thinking. They walked more quickly back to Fly's house, shutting the door behind them instantly.
They hoped and prayed he wasn't alive.
