After a few weeks or so of getting to know her daughter and after she and I become a thing again, things begin to start happening to her. I don't want to bring in someone we don't trust, so we agree to bring in Meredith, the only trustful doctor we know. And that's when we find out that the cure did something to Katherine. She's rapidly dying of old age, which obviously is something that vampire blood can't heal. But Katherine being herself knows people, apparently.

"You've been to New Orleans once upon a time," she states the night we find out that she's dying, as she sits on my couch, a few streaks of gray already showing. "I know someone that could possibly find a way. A witch. Davina had a bond with me when she was younger. And if Klaus hasn't killed Sophie, Sophie's one of the few witch friends I actually have left. Davina is known for being an extraordinary girl. She might be able to save me."

"You're putting big faith in someone that might not be able to save you from this," I remind her.

"Yeah, well, if she can't, at least we tried. What do you say? One last road trip before my possible impending death?" she replies, and gets up from the couch. Possibly a little too fast for her current condition.

In an instant, I'm at her side. An instinct I'll always have for her.

"Maybe that was a little too fast," she states, as if she knows what I was thinking.

I put an arm around her.

"Let's get you to bed. We'll leave tomorrow," I say, and she allows me to help her upstairs to our room. Now that we're a thing again, we've gone to sleeping together in the same room. A lot like we used to, but without anyone getting between us.

The next day, I let her sleep in a while while I pack our bags and anything else, putting everything in my car, before finally going upstairs to wake her up.

When I get to my room, Katherine's still asleep, so I go over to her to wake her up, sitting on her bedside.

"Kitty Kat?" I call to her to try and wake her up. When she doesn't though, I realize that something is wrong. However, when I listen, she's alive still. That's when I figure it's probably just because of her aging. So, I just get up and head to my car with her. Then I head towards New Orleans to hopefully save her life.

Several miles from Virginia, I see her finally start to wake up. That's a relief, since I was beginning to worry.

"Kitty Kat?" I call, as I look over at her. Then I rest a hand on her arm, looking at the road again. We're not too many miles from New Orleans now.

"Where are we?" she questions, seeming to be out of it.

"We're almost to New Orleans. How do you feel?" I answer her, and then ask.

"Like I've been somewhat drained."

"You've been asleep for a couple of days. I was starting to wonder," I inform her, but don't want to tell her that I've been worried. "It's probably just the old age," I add, not wanting her to have to worry more about herself.

Once we get to New Orleans, I ask, "What's your plan?" After all, I know it's unlikely to be in New Orleans without an Original finding out.

"Get to the cemetery. See which of the witches is alive. Either of them will do," she instructs me. I guess that means she doesn't care if any Originals find out that either one of us are here. That means in her state, she must not have much of a plan. That means I'll have to start making the plans.

When I get to the cemetery and park, I look at her.

"I'll be back as soon as I can, okay? In the meantime, try not to die until then."

"I'll try," she says, but I'm afraid that she's getting closer to going through that door.

I get out and close my door. I then enter the cemetery, having been invited centuries ago in here. Then I walk around the cemetery until I find either witch. Passing the graves, I can already see that her friend she mentioned, Sophie, has fallen already, so I look for the mausoleum. The one only one witch at a time would use for spells or to be alone. That's when I find a teenage witch. She's standing by a table, almost like she's frustrated about something.

"Davina?" I ask, standing at the entrance. I feel a little awkward, as if I'm interrupting something, but according to Katherine, our priorities should be aligned.

"Yes?" she asks, looking at me.

"I need to ask for your help. Not for me, but for Katherine. Her doppelganger shoved the cure for vampirism down her throat. Now, she's rapidly aging. I need you to do everything you can, and stop this," I explain to her. Normally, I'm not as friendly to witches, but I feel because Katherine had a bond with her when she was younger that being unfriendly wouldn't be right. I need to be as nice as I can be, or she could kick me out of the cemetery.

"Is she here?" she asks me.

"I left her in my car. I'll go get her," I reply. Then I head to my car and open Katherine's door. Since she looks like she's asleep and looks can deceive, I listen. She's alive, but I know she's getting worse. I then gently pull her into my arms, before heading back to Davina. Then, when I enter the mausoleum, I lay her gently on the wooden table, while the witch looks for a way to save her.

Stay with me, Katherine, I think to her, as I rest a hand on her forehead, my other hand on top of one of hers. Don't leave me.

As I look at her, all I feel is helpless. I should be able to save her, but I know that there's only so much that I can do to help her. Vampires can't stop humans from aging.

"I assume you know Rebekah?" the witch questions me.

"Why?" I ask.

"She was a nurse back when. I don't need Katherine here right now. You can take her to Rebekah. Maybe she can temporarily keep her alive. If you take her across the river to a warehouse, you can avoid Klaus and Elijah, if that's what you want."

When she tells me that Rebekah was a nurse at one point in her time, it's hard for me to picture it. After all, I've known the blonde to have fire and know how to love and backstab you at the same time. But I've never really known her to be a nice enough person to be a nurse. But I guess the decades change certain people.

"Thank you," I say, before leaving with Katherine, and making a home in one of the warehouses across the river. Then, I grudgingly call the blonde.

"What do you want?" she asks me.

"I'm across the river with Katherine. She's human. Davina's looking for a way to stop her from aging faster than she should be, but she recommended me to call you. I know you're not her biggest fan, but maybe if you can put that despisement of yours behind you for a little while, you can help do a good deed. You may be a thousand years old, but I know you can't have that much hatred to not save a human in trouble."

"Since when do you care what happens to Katherine? I thought you hated her."

"I did, but I realized that Katherine as a human is different than the vampire version. I just ask you one thing. If you're going to help save her, don't tell Klaus," I reply. I don't care if Elijah knows, because I'm pretty sure Elijah would burn the world if it meant saving Katherine, but I know Klaus would love to watch her die one way or another.

"Fine. I'll keep this little secret. I just need time to get what I need," she tells me.

"Fair enough," I reply, before we both hang up. I then sit on the corner of the couch, hoping Katherine hangs on a while longer for me. I don't want to have to watch her die. Even though I don't act like it, seeing her like this breaks my heart. If I could trade my life for hers, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but I know that's something I can't do for her. This has to be solved magically. Without magic, I know that she's going to die. And I can't stop it. Nobody knows what that feels like until they've been in shoes like I am right now. "Katherine, if you can hear me, I need you to keep fighting. I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Don't you dare give up. Davina's going to find a way to save you. We'll do everything we can," I tell her, a hand on the side of her face.

After several weeks go by with trying to find a way to save her, something comes up. Davina finds a spell. She can reverse the aging and stop it from rapidly happening ever again. And so, that's what we have her do.

When Katherine wakes up, it's been a few days, but I'm not worried. She's alive, safe, and we won't have to deal with this ever again.

"Hey," I say, seated on her bedside in my room, a hand on hers.

"What happened?"

"Davina saved your life," I inform her. "We're home now."

She sits up in bed and gives a smile.

"Thanks."

"Well, I didn't want to have to watch you die. I'd do anything to keep you alive and safe," I reply with a smile.

After a few minutes of looking at each other, we begin to kiss.
