Chapter Twenty-Three

Two hours later…

Waiting area…

Charlie and Alan, now joined by Amita, Robin, and Ian were now all waiting to hear some news about the antidote and Don's condition. Everyone was worried that they were lied to and it could complicate Don's recovery and/or end up killing him.

Ian had come in about forty minutes after Don was wheeled in, after he had turned Thompkins over to other FBI agents and gave the doctors the vial to see if it was really what the disgraced NSA director said it was. They haven't heard anything since, they were already getting nervous about that.

'What is taking so long?' Charlie thought to himself, frustrated at how, every time they are at the hospital, doctors take a long time to get back to the families on the condition of their loved ones.

Fortunately, they saw a doctor approaching them and they were all nervous about what the man was going to say.

"The antidote was real after all, however, Don wasn't injected with a toxin, not in the sense that Thompkins thought it was, but more about a more traditional one that was fortunately treatable when we got to him." The doctor informed them.

"So it wasn't a supposed fast acting one?" Charlie asked, remembering what his father told him when he asked about what had happened in the warehouse.

"Actually, it was a very slow acting one and, if he wasn't found for another few hours, there would have been no saving him." The doctor told the family.

"So, he's going to be okay?" Charlie asked anxiously

"Yes, but he won't be conscious for a while, as he needs to recuperate from the poisoning and it would be best not to bother him right now." The Doctor said

"When can we see him?" Alan asked

"I would say maybe tomorrow morning or later afternoon." The Doctor said.

"Thanks, Dr.?"

"Dr. Carole." Dr. Carole said

"Thanks for saving my son." Alan said

"That's my job, Alan, and I owe him anyway since he saved my sister several years ago from a man who was stalking her."

This made everyone smile, as they remembered Don rescuing the woman from a guy who was trying to get her to come with him and managed to get the guy to stand down before the cops came. And Don did this after just becoming the Special Agent in Charge, he would still look out for people who needed it.

"Thanks again, Doc." Alan said with a smile.

"No problem, I will have someone bring you in when Don is more lucid." Carole said before excusing himself to go check in on another patient.

"Someone will come by to talk to you about Dr. Finch's condition, along with Granger, Sinclair, and Reeves." He said before he left.

Everyone was relieved to hear the great news and now they just have to figure out how the deaths of the two agents and Mark Walaker fit into all this and bring some form of closure for their families.

'Thompkins owes them that, at least.' Charlie thought, as he and the rest went back to waiting for news on the other patients and hope they can put the case behind them.
