Chapter 5 : Return To Gracefeild
The demons where furious that there prey had escaped. "He couldn't have gotten to far." One of the guards said. "He's probably still injured and still he couldn't have gotten to far on his own."
"Find him." The demon growled. Yes sir. The demon turned to glare at the dark-haired woman behind him. "Tell me again, Isabella how that boy escaped your grasp." Her face remained expressionless and cold.
"He overpowered me, sir. He was a lot stronger than we relized. I can assure you it will not happen again." Make certain it does not. The demon growled. "That'll be all. You are dismissed."
As soon as Isabella got back to her room at Gracefeild she collapsed onto her bed. A silver tear streaked down her face. She hoped her son was alright. She prayed that he would not get caught.
She couldn't remember when he was born, but she remembered the day grandma brought him to her. He had always been a cheerful child and he hardly ever cried. She wasn't sure who his father was though. When she'd had him and Ray the men where just nameless faces she'd forgotten a long time ago.
Though most of the men where usually the soldiers who worked for the farms. She hoped her son was alright. What if they caught him?! What would they do with him then?! Would he be killed?! What was she going to do.
She still felt guilt for not telling him the whole truth about Frollo. Her son still had no idea about the man who'd raised him. She'd lied about him. The truth was far more terrible than he relized. She just hoped he never found out. She thought back to the day of that festival. They'd told her they were almost certain they'd found him.
To be honest considering who raised him maybe they'd always know where he was, and they'd left her in the dark. Still the cruelty she'd seen that day had made her resolve stronger than ever. She'd made a promise that day that she'd find a way to end the farms once and for all even if it cost her, her life!
Hopefully they would meet again one day. Maybe in another life. For now she would think of her sons and hope they ran as faraway as possible. Unfortunately the demons had other plans in store for her son.
Quasimodo tossed and turned in his sleep he woke startled, beads of sweat dripping down his face. He'd had that same dream again. He looked out at the starry night sky and sighed. He felt guilt for leaving his siblings there was no denying it.
But he'd been only six years old. He'd been scared. He was still scared. He took the pen out of his pocket and opened the pen. The map popped up showing a blinking red dot. He wasn't that far away his siblings where just over the sand dunes.
"I'll do it!" He jumped up gathering everything he'd brought with him and started his trek through the dessert. He stared down at the map as he got closer and closer to the blinking red dot. Suddenly he caught sight of something in the distance. As he got closer he relized it was an open hatch.
The bunker was underground! It was absolute genius but...Why was the hatch open? "H-Hello? Emma? R-Ray?" No one answered. Somethings wrong. He quickly rushed down the ladder as he rushed into the bunker.
The bunker was massive with tons of empty rooms and a fully stocked kitchen tons of supplies and enough food to last someone for years. This place must have been abandoned a while ago. He opened one door to find an empty room with the words help scrawled across the walls in black ink.
He closed the door with a shudder. Suddenly he heard the sound of a phone ringing in the next room over. Slowly he opened the door. Hanging on the wall was an old phone of some sort. He carefully he picked up the phone.
"H-Hello?" He said cautiously placing the phone next to his ear. "Hello my name...Is William Minerva." Quasimodo gasped. "Mr. Minerva." But he didn't answer instead he continued to speak.
"If your listening to this recording then it probably means I'm dead." It's a recording. "So that means that he's- That he's...He wiped the tears from his eyes as he continued to listen to the recording.
"However I congratulate you on your arrival. I'm sorry I cant be there to celebrate with you in person but...This Bunkers yours now. There's enough food to last a few years. However if you want there are secret ways to get to the human world."
"However most of them have been sealed off. Except for the one's I built under the farms. Though I imagine they are being guarded carefully. I'm so sorry for what's been done to you I pray you find your way to the human world. Good luck."
The phone hung up. Quasimodo was silent. "What am I going to do?" How could he ever escape to the human world now?! If he'd know his only means of escape had been under the farm he would have asked Minerva to take him there himself. Perhaps he relized it would be to risky, and that the portal would be a safer option.
He gave a tired yawn as he stretched his arms out behind him. "I better get some sleep. It's been a long day. He spent the next few days in the bunker on occasion he would hunt birds in the forest and would eat that as well that way he wouldn't use all of his supplies.
How he wished it could be like this forever. Unfortunately time was a thing that was beyond his control, It didn't matter what he did he was always going to get caught! Quasimodo felt a hand cover his mouth He opened his eyes to see a shadowy figure above him.
"We've got him." Quasimodo struggled trying to break free but gave up as he felt the familiar sharp point of a needle digging into his skin. He felt the drugs kick in as went limp. His weak mind overrun with nightmares.
He dreamed he was surrounded by demons on all sides there claws trying to rip him apart. He sobbed trying to free himself from the nightmare when he heard a familiar voice humming a lullaby.
His eyes opened slowly. He winced slightly as he was blinded by rays of sunlight filtering through a nearby window. "W-Where am I?" Home. Quasimodo looked up his eyes widened as he came face to face with his mother.
"M-Mom?" She threw her arms around him hugging him tight. I'm so sorry. As his eyes adjusted to the room he relized his mother was telling the truth. He was home. "I-I'm at Gracefeild." His heart began to pound as he tried to break free from his mothers grip. "N-N-No this c-cant be happening.
"I escaped! I escaped." Shhh...She said running a cool hand through his hair. Tears slowly streamed down his face as he cried into his moms shoulder. "Shhh...Its alright. Your safe now I'm so sorry."
"Why? Why am I still alive?" I don't know. Their deciding what to with you as we speak. They still haven't decided. Demons aren't found of humans making a fool of them. "For now they've left you in my charge until they come to a decision."
He shuddered. "Don't worry you'll be fine. Dinner will be ready shortly I suggest you change and come downstairs when your ready." He nodded. Wait! She turned to look at him. "Do any of the other children...Do the know what this place really is?"
She shook her head. "Only one." He sighed as he watched her leave. He looked down at his blood-stained shirt and sighed looking over at the clean white clothes. "Lets get this over with."
"Children this is Caleb, he used to live here just at the orphanage just like all of you do now." He'll be staying here for awhile while his parents are away." The strange teen gave them all a cheerful smile. "I look forward to getting to know all of you." The children cheered ecstatically as he glared at his mother out of the corner of his eye.
The children seemed eager for a new friend especially considering fifteen of their siblings had vanished without a trace. The children invited him to participate in their games of hide and go seek and tag.
He'd always been good with kids especially since he was like a big kid himself. As he collapsed on his bed that day he suddenly remembered something. He looked under the bed as he pried loose a floorboard.
He saw a dusty slightly yellowed envelope. He carefully opened it trying not to make to much noise. "Lets see what you wanted to tell me...Rose." He unfolded the letter and what he read shocked him.
"Dear, Caleb"
"If your reading this then I'm probably dead, but knowing you, you probably went to the gate to see me off which means you already know the truth. This place is a farm. A farm where were sold to demons for food!"
"Your probably wondering when I figured this out. The truth is...I've always known. Most people forget their memories from when they were a baby. Its called Infantile Amnesia. Unfortunately for a rare few some remember the time they spent as a baby. I' am one of those few. I remember everything from the demons to where they put the tracker in. (It's in our left ear, though you probably already know that." I'm glad I got to be your friend. I'll never forget you."
"But before I die I want you to promise me something. Promise me you'll take our family and escape. Promise me that no matter what happens you'll always protect them. "Can you do that Caleb?" I love you brother."
Your sister,
Rose.
Quasimodo wiped a tear from his eye. "I promise, Rose' I'll protect them no matter what!
