Buddy set the phone down as he tried to think how he could get back to Violet. The NSA wasn't available, Winston was helping Mirage with the transition and the oh-so-reliable supers who were not currently seated at The Eighth Wonder were MIA.
He could try to find his jet before the colonel came back but there was no way that everyone in the facility was going to be able to fit. Dash could run on water, he had put the Christian messiah to shame with that trick, but he didn't know if the kid could make it to The Eighth Wonder. There weren't any clear markers for the underwater facility.
He didn't even know what they were walking into. Was it a bomb? No. The way that Griffin talked about The Eighth Wonder wasn't how one would view collateral damage, but then again, he mocked Violet in public and worshiped her behind closed doors.
Either way, it was going to be a bloodbath, especially since this group had bullets that could cut through Violet's shields.
He never did get to hear what those bullets were made out of, but if he had to guess, they contained some graphene and some kind of polish that could repel certain waves of light and electricity.
Thinking about the bullets wasn't going to help Violet, but it did help him calm down.
"Can you do me a favor?"
"You doing okay there, Bud?" Tobias asked leaning forward in his seat.
"I need you to stall the colonel," Buddy muttered as he continued to keep his eyes on the world outside. Questioning what assets did he had and what he may need.
"What's going on?"
"Rule number one of Major Metal's school for aspiring martinets, never let anyone else know what's going on in your head," he muttered as he turned away. It was the one rule he could never fully get through his thick skull. "I only need you to tell him a lie, that they took me for a test, I took off to the food court, just buy me a few minutes and leave. Also, do not let him know that you are a super, got it?"
"Sure thing man, but you owe me for this too you know. I left my shift early just to be here," he said with a smirk as Buddy was already reaching for his wallet. "Kidding, of course. I'll work for anybody who can save me from a nuke."
Buddy nodded in appreciation as he pulled on the biker boots that still smelt of his burning flesh. "Thank you," he said before walking out of the room.
Tobias shook his head and looked to the television again, watching the clip of Buddy getting pulled out of the Reflection Pool. "Crazy ass genius."
…
When Violet arrived on the floor by Voyd's portal, impressed haws were sounded by some of the soldiers and fellow supers, but Helen saw the fear in her daughter's eyes.
Before the mother could ask what was wrong but the dings from all the elevators going off already put the seasoned super on edge.
"Well, this is disappointing!" Evelyn Deavor announced as she stepped out from her elevator. "I was promised that I'd get to kill off Elastigirl's family, but it looks like we are two Parr's short. Well, at least it is just two of the three idiots- But really I am just happy to take you out, Helen."
Elastigirl was already putting her children behind her as the evil-doer stalked closer towards them.
"I really do need to repay you for not letting me die all those years ago, so I'll also be merciful. I'll kill you first."
Helen could only glare at the woman as the hired arms raised their weapons and backed the group of the Eighth Wonder residents back against the glass window, the only one who stood still was the lab's second in command and Buddy's go-to assistant, Jason.
"Wait, wait, wait! You don't want to do this! If you're packing graphene bullets-"
"We'll be cutting through the Wonder's foundation, blah, blah, blah," Evelyn mouthed off as she shook her head. "I'm not an idiot. None of you are worth those pricey bullets, at least not anymore," Evelyn said as she cast a knowing look to Violet who did not waver but the young woman felt like kissing Jason hard enough to make Buddy jealous.
"Any last words, supers?"
"I do, actually," Lucious started from the back of the crowd and made his way towards the front. "If you got a problem with us, keep it with us. These fine service members are doing nothing more than serving their country."
"Sorry, not going to happen," Evelyn said as she shrugged. "The public tends to get really emotional when supers die saving people, but it gets really political when our fine soldiers die. How bad is it going to look for supers when they can't even save themselves, let alone those who depend on them?"
Suddenly one of the Hyperion mercs stepped beside her and stated something into her ear. Evelyn rolled her eyes and released a groan but nodded to whatever he had passed.
"Let's rewind a little bit. Where is the kid?"
Jack-Jack raised his hand hesitantly and Evelyn rubbed at her forehead. "No, dummy. You're a few months away from being able to enlist. The girl. Where is the little girl?"
"What do you want with her?" Violet asked, hoping to finally get some answers.
"Oh, I don't care about the runt, but my business partner is very interested in her genes. Said that she's the key to unlocking the mystery to your gifts- or something like that. I honestly didn't care to learn more. I just wanted to prove how worthless you all are. Now. I'll ask again, where is she? Or do we need to start a deal?"
When no one answered Helen nodded and shifted her eyes over the regular folks. "First one to give me the whereabouts of one Lillian Thomas can be taken out of the killing pool."
"In her room!" A man shouted as he broke away from the rest of the crowd. "She's in room 131!"
The response he received was clapping her hands without a hint of joy over the defector.
"Thank you- sorry, what's your name?"
"Eric," the MP replied. "Eric Laclair."
"Well congratulations, Mr. Laclair, you get to take a ride with us!" Evelyn stated as she watched two of the mercenaries pull the man towards the elevators and another four moved to a separate elevator to find the child. "Now that that's over with- Helen, would you mind coming over here so I can shoot you myself?"
"I'd love to know how you and Winston shared the same parents," Helen started and Evelyn laughed.
"Oh, that's a good one. Are you likening me to a monster? I'm fine with that, but you should take a look in the mirror if you want to talk about bad parenting. Your daughter has racked up a pretty decent kill count, second only to her lover. That was really cute by the way, Violet. The way he proposed to you on stage, oh it was just so sweet!" Evelyn said jokingly as she batted her eyes. "What a perfect pair you two idiots make."
"I'll be sure to let him know you think that when I see him again," Violet replied as she moved alongside Jason and put distance away from the rest of the crowd. Evelyn tilted her head at the younger woman with a lofty expression.
"Sorry sweetie, but you are going to see your boyfriend ever again."
"Fiancé," Violet corrected and Evelyn rolled her eyes into the back of her head.
"Whatever. I've changed my mind, kill the brat first," Evelyn said, relishing the look of fear on Helen's face. A band of the hired guns all aimed at Violet who faked a flinch as Jason ducked for cover as well.
As soon as Violet heard the click of the trigger, she raised her shields. Bullets flew back, killing two of the men who shot at her in the process. Violet gave a satisfied smile to the woman that ordered her death. Evelyn's face now wearing a look of fear as Violet raised her chin.
"For the record, Winston also thinks we make a cute couple too."
…
Ripping the patient tag from his wrist, Buddy strutted towards The White House knowing that was where the rocket had crashed. It was also the first place he'd expect Bob to want to land and the colonel played an excellent pushover.
He was stopped by a yellow blur and he found himself looking into Dash's eyes. But his eyes focused in on the kid's mouth as The Speedster was talking as fast as he could run.
"Holy crap! Buddy! That was totally wicked! I can't believe you took down a missile! Oooh man! I wish I had some rocket shoes too but I'm probably faster without them- oh did you cut your hand? Yikes! That's pretty hardcore too though. Hey. Do you smell bad bacon?"
Buddy grabbed Dash by the shoulder and dragged him to the side as a small crowd began to gather, murmuring gossip of the two heroes.
"Where is my jet?"
"Parked next to the nuke. Hey, how did you do that? Can you teach me?! I promise I'm a real quick study!" he said as Buddy released him and began to walk in that direction.
"Go get your dad and tell him to start pulling more strings, your family is in danger."
"What are you talking about? They are at the party, a party that you are overdressed for now- do you have an extra at your place? It'll only take me a couple of hours to go grab it," The Speedster said as he trailed behind Buddy, the sea of pedestrians parting for them but not without giving shouts and jovial cheers to the man who had rescued them from certain death.
"It's Syndrome and Speedster!"
"You're the man Syndrome!"
"We love you Syndrome!"
At one point in time, this was what Buddy wanted more than anything. For strangers to be calling out his chosen name, recognizing his greatness, his worth, and treat him like the king he believed himself to be.
He'd give up that crown and all the privileges that came with it just to hold Violet's hand.
"Just get your dad and meet me at the jet," Buddy ordered.
"What about Colonel Griffin?"
"He's a capable man, he can find his own way back."
…
"I thought you said she was under lock and key here!" Evelyn hissed as bullets and powers began to fly in the facility. She and a squad leader of her esteemed associates were hiding behind a flipped table.
"That's what we were told too!" the man grunted underneath his helmet as the woman was digging into the man's tactical pouches and pulled out a black box of bullets. The team that had been sent up to retrieve the child, also led astray, were on their way back to their aircraft to pull more information from the man that they already had in their custody. "We can't use those in here!"
"I thought you lot were willing to die to get the job done," Evelyn hissed as she loaded up her handgun with the specially designed bullets.
"No, we just rather die than go back empty-handed, it's different," the man grunted from behind his helmet.
"Well chief, I'm not willing to let these assholes win again,"Evelyn replied as she stood up and fired off two rounds. She would have spent the whole clip if she could but the fist of Elastigirl knocked her down and the gun slid onto the floor just out of her reach.
"It's over, Evelyn, and this time you're not coming out from behind bars," the heroine said and Evelyn just smirked as she massaged her jaw.
"You are so right, Helen. It is over. For all of us."
Helen gave her arch-nemesis a questioning look until the sound of crackling echoed in the open space. The rest of the room stopped it's fighting and all looked to the direction of where the sound was coming from. Evelyn didn't shoot at anyone, but her shots were enough to take out the entire facility as one of the graphene glass windows began to splinter.
"Pull out, they're as good as dead anyway!" the squad leader shouted and all the helmed fighters that could still move fled to the elevators, infuriating the woman who had delivered the death sentence.
"COWARDS!"
Frozone was the first on the scene trying to plug the cracks in with ice before the pressure caved in the glass but the water was already making its way through.
"It's no use! There's too much water out there!" Frozone shouted as a major crack split down the center of the frame. Violet rushed to the scene and threw up a shield to hold the pressure back. She strained as another crack presented itself and a waterfall spilled out onto the floor, and she cursed as she fought against what felt like the entire Atlantic. Violet kept her eyes shut as she reinforced her shields a little thicker now. Frozone attempted to fill in the cracks again but the ice only caused more splinters.
"Oh, that is NOT cool!"
...
Voyd was working up a sweat as she attempted to open a portal somewhere. Anywhere. Just a place far from here but her mind just kept reeling over all her mistakes.
The time that she lost her best friend's Barbie doll. When she accidentally sent a baseball through a portal and into her high school principal's car windshield. The Bangor Maine incident. She remembered being in the former Director's office when she was slapped with a Cease and Desist Order by the NSA three years ago.
"You're benched until further notice, Voyd. We're sorry, but while nobody died, we can't be held responsible for mishaps like this-" said the graying man with Mirage by his side.
"I promise it won't happen again."
"You're damn right it won't," Mirage spat as she slammed her open palms onto the desk between them. "You could have killed those kids, nearly did with that blizzard being there! What the hell made you open a portal to Maine of all places?"
"I-I'm sorry! I don't know- It just popped up and that's where they went, I can get better though, I swear!"
"Prove it. Then you can come back."
…
Winston sighed as he packed up the last box of Mirage's personal effects as she stood with her back to him.
The last 48 hours had been a whirlwind for them. For a lot of people actually. But she had been shot, sanctioned a child-abduction, lost her job, got notified that her ex-boyfriend was getting the chair, was warned that the end of the world was near minutes away, got saved by the ex-boyfriend who was now a free man… and now she was supposed to just go on like it was a regular day? What the hell was her life?
She just hoped that the still breathing bastards who ruined the press conference would squeal to the FBI, but she highly doubted any of them would. Apparently, they were all on suicide watch in their cells after one of them managed to hang themselves. This wasn't a soldiers code, it felt more like a mafia, or a gang- maybe it was. Maybe they were-
"You did a good job you know," Winston said suddenly, breaking Mirage from her thoughts.
"I failed, Winston. Twice now I've done a disservice to the supers- Leading them to their deaths the first time and the second time for letting this institution crumble. I should have fought harder- I should have been more open about the SRA and all the other shit that was swept under the carpet, I should have-"
"Hey, Woah there M! You can't go beating yourself up! You gotta pick yourself back up, roll with the punches and come back even better! Think of it as a fresh start!"
A fresh start sounded nice, but for her fresh starts meant being alone, and as independent as she liked to believe herself to be, she really liked having someone in her corner for a change.
"Will you be here?"
"Ah, you don't need me, but I'd gladly stand by you, whatever you decide to do. Help run a new super advocacy group, open up a bake shop-"
"Start doing crime again?" she asked with a smile and Winston caught the joke.
"That is not allowed, ma'am! I already got an evil sister. I'm not one for dark mistresses, but I might make some teeny tiny exceptions," he said before they kissed. Mirage smiled as she took hold of him by his tie and pulled him closer.
"Does office sex count in this box of exceptions?"
"W- oh, I uh, yes. Yes, I think I could go along with that," he said flustered before looking at her bandaged leg. "Are you sure?"
"Very," she purred as her hands motioned to his buckle when the room dropped ten degrees. Winston and Mirage both shrank slightly at the sudden sensation but they didn't pull apart when they saw Karen Fields only feet away through one of her portals.
"Voyd?" Winston asked and Karen opened her eyes. The anxious woman's face was alit with gratification when she saw the pair and then she remembered that she couldn't pat herself on the back just yet.
Jumping through the portal, Karen kept it open with one hand as the other sought for the rec floor. It only took a second to open up that rift, and it wasn't a second too late either as the portal showed the scene of Violet giving it her all to hold back a thousand leagues.
"Violet!" Karen shouted from several yards away, alerting the rest of the floor that there was a way out.
"Everybody go! Move it, people!" Elastigirl shouted as she ushered folks towards the portal moving into the NSA office as well. "Violet, just hold on until everyone gets through okay?! I'll pull you in!"
"Sure thing," Violet seethed through her clenched jaw, her feet slipping in the saltwater as she attempted to ground herself.
Evelyn's presence was practically forgotten by all, Helen included. She moved back for the pistol and raised it towards Helen but there was no clear shot at the woman with all of The Eighth Wonder residents rushing past her. A manic smile came on her face as she changed her mind and aimed for Violet's back.
…
"Buddy, everybody's looking for you! Why the hell did you leave the hospital without telling anyone?" Mr. Incredible called as he came upon the scene of Buddy tearing up the missile he had already defeated. "What the heck are you doing?"
"Evidence, Bob. I'm looking for evidence," a grease-ridden Buddy snapped back as he clambered out of the metal husk to meet the father and son. There wasn't anything else to pull from the hunk of junk. Every identifier had either been pulled out by the first investigators on the scene or were stripped before it was sent. He was betting on the latter.
"We need to get back to The Wonder," he urged and the pair of supers raised their brows in confusion. He was a sight to be had, bandaged hand, ripped up clothes, and covered in grease, but he was still standing.
"Slow down, Bud. Leave that stuff to the agents, you've got medals to receive and parties to go to," Dash said, becoming the spinning image of his father, just built like a wide reciever rather than a linebacker. "And you of all people can't go around looking like that. Let's get you in some threads that make you look like a secret agent at least!"
Buddy shook off the pompous remark. There was so much to say, so much to do, but he didn't know where to begin. Didn't know how to put it without sounding like a lunatic.
He wished that Violet was with him. She'd just sit back and absorb his ranting before putting the pieces together- she had the answer all along with this too. Colonel Griffin was not their friend. She might not have known, but that intuition of hers could smell a rat from a mile away.
And he realized then in that moment that he had also known all along as well too. When she had voiced her disgust for the facility in his jet he had all but admitted he would have taken advantage of the all too easy killing floor.
The phone went off in his jet and before Buddy could tell Dash to stay put the super was already on the phone.
"It's Winston! Something is going on at the NSA!"
Buddy rushed back towards the jet and put the phone onto speaker.
"Win?"
"Buddy! Oh, jeez, you are a voice for sore ears- listen, I don't know what's going on but Voyd's here and so is the rest of the Wonder it seems-"
Buddy didn't wait to hear another word. He jumped right back out of the jet and ran towards the NSA headquarters as fast as he could. It was going to be a hell of a sprint with the boots he had on but he could let Violet do the heavy lifting when he had her in his arms.
…
Colonel Griffin had arrived at the NSA, or more accurately the remains of the NSA HQ office only a few minutes prior to Winston calling the Jet. This was the first place that the military commander had expected the AWOL Buddy Pine to show up first. Instead, what he met was a sea of supers and enlisted members alike.
He pushed against the current of the overcrowded halls and made his way into the room that held the source of the flood. Stepping in, he observed the situation and saw Evelyn when no one else did. Pulling his issued revolver out, he set his sights on Evelyn's head.
...
Violet paused as the sensation of numbness flooded through her. Her ears rang from a series of shots that were fired out and her eyes quickly searched the panels again, trying to see if there was another breach. She was concerned that Evelyn had shot at another window but there was no other spills as far as she could see.
Where did the bullets hit?
She looked back to Voyd's position, worried that her friend had been injured. The teal-haired heroine wore an expression of pain, but it didn't exude one of injury. She had seen that look of hurt before, but only in the mirror.
Looking down, Violet took in the sight of her orange sweater and the red that began to spread through its fibers. She didn't hear the cries for her to run to them. It was hard to hear anything over the ringing in her ears. Too difficult to notice anything beyond the burning sensation that was currently ripping through her abdomen, or the way her muscles screamed to give the shields a rest.
Then she heard her mother's voice break out. Turning her head back again, Violet's eyes met her mother's gaze and that's when the waterworks began. Violet stepped back trying to get to safety while still holding up the shattered glass, but she faltered in her steps and the force field began to phase out letting more water pour into the facility.
It was only a good hundred-meter dash away, but Violet knew she wasn't going to make it. Her mother's arm was already reaching towards her, but there were still people fighting to get into Voyd's portal. There wasn't enough time.
She looked to the blood-soaked sweater again then to Karen who was shaking her head. A sad smile crossed Violet's lips as she stumbled back and fell to the floor, her sheilds phasing in and out.
Her family was on solid land. Karen had done the impossible. Lillian was safely hidden away again, and Buddy didn't need protection anymore. They were all safe. That was what mattered.
Violet breathed an apology that no one heard as she dropped the shield.
Those on the other side of the portal watched in horror as Violet fell and the ocean threatened to crush her.
Holding out the vortex, Voyd was fully prepared to flood the government office they were currently standing in if it meant Helen could reach her daughter, but a sharp pain hit the back of her head. From where she couldn't say, but it didn't matter. That simple knock cut off the connection between her and The Eighth Wonder. It also cut off Elastigirl's arm, just above her elbow as she had her hand on her daughter's shoulder. Had felt her underneath her fingers before the white-hot pain severed her arm.
Helen cried out, not just for the lost limb but for her daughter as the last soldier who came through went to work making a tourniquet from his belt. The only sounds that could be heard were the sobs from the grieving mother.
"I'm so sorry, for your loss, Helen," Colonel Griffin murmured as he holstered his weapon again as Voyd slowly gained recognition of the situation again. Realizing the lost time Voyd began to move to action again.
"No! I can still save her! I can still save her!" Voyd cried out as her eyes searched for the portal that was once there. "Nononono."
"Let her go, super. She was dead before she dropped the shield," the colonel assured as he tried to hug her.
"No! I can still save her!" Voyd shouted as she ripped herself away from the arms that attempted to restrain her and summoned a new portal, one from memory.
Water poured into the room, seeking to fill the office. A dead Evelyn floated in, along with a few fish. Voyd closed the portal and tried again, and again, and again, only taking on more water and debris in the already cramped office.
"I can save her. I have to save her," Voyd choked as she was apprehended by new arms. "Let me save her! Let go of me!" She cried as she continued to pull up portal after portal even as she was restrained. Everyone who was not tending to the injured or attempting to stop her just watched the fruitless effort with tired stares.
Violet was lost.
...
Buddy staggered in through the back entrance of the National Super Agency, huffing and puffing a storm. He was going to have to see if Dash would take up bomb diffusing lessons to be his running coach. His lungs heaved as he gripped the handrail but he kept pushing. He wasn't at the finish line yet.
He walked through the familiar halls, doing his best to control his breathing. He was going to need some air in his lungs for the kiss he was going to give Violet. Really take her breath away- and then they could take down the colonel and bring down Hyperion once and for all. They could get Lillian back, they could go to his island, or anywhere they wanted.
They'd be able to do all the silly little daydreams they discussed. Maybe he'd even crack open a biology book to put a kid in her. He had all the time in the world after all.
As he neared the Director's office he made eye contact with Mirage who was comforting a distraught Winston. That should have been a flag for him- but it wasn't. He was still seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses.
"Alright, crisis adverted, the day is saved twice over," the pardoned ex-villain exclaimed as he walked through the hall, not yet questioning why the carpets were waterlogged. Mirage moved from Winston's side and for the door.
"Buddy, I need you to sit down for a moment-"
"Come on, Mira, I've got to get on with my life. I've got one of those now you know. No more check-ins with you or Uncle Sam. Where's Vi?" he asked still grinning but the smile was quickly turning into a nervous gape as he saw Colonel Griffin move behind the window of Mirage's office to speak to the shaking Winston.
"Bud, listen-"
"Where's Violet?" he asked a little more forcefully. When the tanned woman offered sympathetic eyes to him he shook his head in disbelief and moved for her office. His eyes found Voyd first, but she wasn't in the room. Her eyes were on the floor where she was making portals the size of her fist, only a cup of water getting through each time she opened and closed the gateways.
He heard Helen's sobs second and found her in the corner of the room, being held by her youngest as she was being prepped by a paramedic. She wasn't whole, but she looked like she lost more than an arm.
He blinked as he felt the congenial hand of Colonel Griffin on his shoulder.
"Dr. Pine, I'm so glad I found you, but I am sorry to find you under such circumstances."
"What circumstances would those be," he breathed, but Buddy already knew. She wasn't in the room. Where was she? She was supposed to be here. She was-
"We've lost Violet. I saw it myself, she was killed by Evelyn, but she saved everyone here. I have to do a headcount now, but I think most of The Eighth Wonder survived thanks to her."
Buddy kept his composure at the news. Winston wailed louder, but Buddy kept his gaze on the colonel and those near-black eyes.
"Where's Evelyn?" Buddy asked, his fists balled up.
"Dead," Winston sobbed as Mirage came back to him and he buried himself into her blouse. "The Colonel killed her, but it was too late. I didn't think- Had I known she was this capable- Oh God. Buddy, I'm so sorry,"
Buddy was holding his breath the entire time.
"We lost The Eighth Wonder as well," the colonel said, crocodile tears in his eyes. "It seems that those who attacked came prepared, the bullets pierced through the glass. It was thanks to Violet's courage that everyone else was able to escape- but I don't see Miss Lillian anywhere I'm afraid-"
"I've sent her away actually," Buddy said quickly before Mirage or Winston could explain the situation.
"Oh thank heavens she is alright," the colonel said, tightening his grip on his shoulder. "All is not lost then."
Buddy nodded as he waited for the man to release him but that did not happen until the room became that much more crowded by the arrival of Dash and Robert Parr. Their eyes were bloodshot having received the terrible news as it happened over his jet phone.
The pair quickly passed Buddy and towards Helen and Jack-Jack. The denim blue eyes of Mr. Incredible met his icy orbs but Buddy still kept a straight face.
"Where is she? Lillian that is. With this recent attack, nowhere is safe for her."
"I've got a contact I trust, but I'm taking her back to Nomansia actually. Now that I'm a free man, I can legally be her guardian," Buddy baited with a straight face. "But if you'll excuse me… I think I'm going to take some R and R before I collect her," he said before turning away
"Where are you going?" the father of the deceased bride-to-be asked, stopping Buddy for a moment.
"Home," he lied, knowing that there was no place left on earth that he could feel secure. His actual travel plans included one last trip to The Eighth Wonder in his manta jet, and he didn't plan on coming up without her.
He walked through the halls again, keeping his emotions under lock and key until he knew he was free from watchful eyes. He believed he was in the clear when he exited the NSA office. He nearly clung to the wall for support when a powerful fist wretched him by the collar of his shirt and pinned him to the outside wall.
Once again, Buddy was met with the eyes that Violet had inherited and perfected. They were full of pain and wrath, and Buddy welcomed the deliverance of pain. Anything to distract him from the hollowness in his chest.
"You knew about this, didn't you? You knew they were going to come for us and you said nothing?! What was it? Wanted to take out as many supers as you could if you couldn't win, is that it?"
Buddy blinked slowly. If he went along with that tale would Mr. Incredible make good on the promise of putting his head through a wall? Would he put him out of his misery, or would he show him mercy for his daughter's sake?
Opening his mouth, he fished for the results he desired with a lie. "If I couldn't have your daughter, nobody could, was the mindset actually."
Robert stared at the man incredulously and released him. He didn't believe the words, but they felt right. He stepped back from Buddy, wordless for the time being. He waited for a snide comment, gloating, an evil laugh to prove his deep-seated suspicions on the man but nothing came from his daughter's betrothed.
Seeing that he would survive the encounter, Buddy shoulder-checked Mr. Incredible as he passed him to make the trek back to his jet, clenching his fists tighter as he heard his former idol tell him what he wished was the outcome.
"It should have been you who died! It was supposed to be you!"
"Well it wasn't," he spat back, not daring to show the tears that were running free as he walked away.
