"In Show" Age:
Today I am staying home from school because I am sick, for the first time since moving here a couple weeks ago. I want to go, but I don't feel so good. I am in bed and grandma is by my side.
"I know you really wanted to go to school today," grandma tells me as I lay in bed. I try to nod, but she stops me. "Don't move too much." She puts a cold cloth on my head. "Grandpa used the book to call you in as sick." A couple days before moving here they got a French to English book. They use it a lot when I am not around.
"Thank you." I cough a lot after I finish my sentence.
"I hope Mr. Owl understands what I told him," grandpa says as he comes in. "I think he said something about working at home and another student."
"Homework and one of my friends bringing me it later." I have to explain to grandpa so he understands. I cough some more and start to close my eyes.
"When you wake up from your nap I'll bring you something to eat," grandma says as I begin to fall asleep. I feel her take my glasses off before I do. I dream that I am playing with all the others. We're by the playground by the school and playing tag at recess. I wake up after tripping over a rock in my dream. I open my eyes to see grandma by my bed side. "I see you are awake. I made you some soup so you can get better. It's a special soup my mom used to make whenever me or my brothers and sisters got sick." On my bed stand is a bowl with the soup, which I only see after I have my glasses. She grabs the bowl and a spoon and helps me eat it because my hands are tired. It's not good tasting, but I eat it. "I'm sorry that wasn't very nice tasting, but it'll help you get better quicker."
"Can I have some water?"
"Certainly. I'll be right back." She leaves the room and soon comes back with a small cup. "Drink it in small sips so you don't upset your tummy." She hands me the cup and I take small sips. "Are you feeling better?"
"Yes." I cough a couple of times.
"Now that I think about it, being in bed all day is pretty boring. Why don't we go in the living room?" She removes my blanket and helps me get up. I walk to the living room with her help because I my legs feel weak. I feel tired as I sit down.
"Will I be able to go to school Monday?"
"I have a feeling you'll be able to." I smile as grandma sits in the chair next to mine. "Just don't push yourself too much and you will get better quicker." I nod as I hear someone knock on the kitchen door.
"I got it," grandpa says from the kitchen. I can't hear who is at the door. "Thank you." This is the first time I have ever heard him say "thank you" in English. He comes in with some paper, probably my homework. "It's your homework." He's back to speaking French. "It was that turtle who brought it. Oh, what's his name."
"Franklin?"
"Yes. That's it. I thought I heard him say something about you, sick, and getting better, but I don't know exactly what he said."
"I bet he's just worried about his friend..."
