And I ask you, friend, what's a fella to do
'Cause her hair was black and her eyes were blue
So I took her hand and I gave her a twirl
And I lost my heart to a Galway girl
Paul never really liked Halloween. As a kid, he spent most Halloweens in Tacoma. His mom's weekend always fell on Halloween somehow. His mom wasn't a bad person, she just didn't like doing anything involving other people. The excuse every year that Paul begged to go trick-or-treating or to a party was "people put razor blades'' or "there's alcohol at those parties.'' Every year resulted in an outburst, which led to him getting grounded for the weekend. This was his first year that was in LaPush for Halloween, most of which was spent patrolling the woods, in the rain, and barely tolerating Jared going on and on about some chick he follows on Tick tock. He honestly didn't care at that point; he just wanted to get to the party at the community center. They had swung by the old Cullen place, apparently. It had gone up to rent a few not even an hour after they left. Now at least according to Sam, it was being occupied by a woman named Maze. What kind of name is Maze, did her parents hate her or something? Paul thought absently as they rode in Sam's truck to the community center.
"I don't think her parents hated her Paul, it probably short for Marcy or something like that.'' Looking at Jared he had momentarily forgotten that they could understand each other's thoughts.
"Well whoever she is, she must know the Morningstars. Just keep your eyes open until we know more about them.'' The Morningstars. The royalty of LA. They were the talk of the town. They had moved into the old Queen Anne-style house down the street from the Cullens a few weeks after they had moved.
"I mean we know that Lucifer dude bought that bar that Billy likes to go with Charlie,'' Jared said. Paul gave him a look before going
"Yeah no shit, it's not exactly a secret that Lucifer fucking Morningstar moved to Forks.'' Sam cleared his throat, shushing the two boys before a fight broke out.
"Look, all I'm saying is it cannot be a coincidence that someone moved into Cullen's old place right after they left. Just keep an eye on Maze okay. She might their friend.'' Jared and Paul nodded. It was a likely possibility that this Maze lady was a vampire, but that was the problem. She didn't smell like a vampire. Vampires smelled of bleach and sugar. This Maze lady had smelled like rotten flesh, sulfur, cigarette smoke, and really old whiskey. Normal humans didn't smell like death. Maze was something else entirely. Whatever she was, Paul didn't like it.
"Paul, you know we can still hear you right?'' The second in command jumped in his seat. They had just pulled into the parking lot of the community center. Sam looked over the driver's seat with concern written on his face.
"Yeah don't remind me,'' Paul said grimly. Out of all the things he hated about shifting was the loss of privacy.
"As I said, just keep an eye on the Morningstars and Maze. Even if she isn't human we need to find out who and what she is. Make sure she's not working with the Cullens, same thing with the Morningstars. '' The two-pack members nodded. The rain was coming down harder now. Jared pushed Paul causing him to stumble, but he caught himself and shoved Jared back. Both boys laughed as they fought in the parking lot. Sam, cracked a smile and joined before telling them they had to get in before they got any wetter. Opening the doors to the center their laughter echoed off the walls. Caught up in the moment the boys didn't notice a small figure laying on the floor with her arm tossed over her face. A groan caught their attention, the three turned their attention to the girl on the floor. They watched her get up. The moment the girl turned around and looked at them Paul felt the world stop.
Her dark brown eyes met his honey brown ones.
Mine all mine. Oh God, how he wanted her right then and there. He watched as she gave him an uneasy smile, and disappeared into the gym. No, no… please. I don't even know your name! Don't go! Paul started walking away from Jared and Sam, but as soon as Sam touched his shoulder the trance was broken. All that was left was the feeling, the feeling to be by her side.
"Sam… did I just….'' Paul asked. Sam nodded.
"Paul, listen to me. Go slow. You don't know who she is, she doesn't know you. Be gentle, don't go declaring your love right away.'' Paul nodded. It felt like his skin was on fire. He needed to feel her hands on his skin, something to soothe him.
"I know Sam, I'm not stupid.'' Not that stupid. Paul pushed open the door to the gym, with Sam and Jared right behind him. He started to make a beeline for the girl but stopped in his tracks. She had her arms wrapped around a tall white man with slicked-back hair, dressed in designer clothes… and was that eyeliner? What loser wears eyeliner? He watched as the girl hugged, presumably, who Paul hoped was her father. She looked almost exactly like him, except for the olive skin and almond-shaped eyes. He felt a sharp jab in his side
"Dude, that loser is Lucifer Morningstar, and that fine-looking girl'' Jared said in a sultry voice, "is his daughter Jade Morningstar. You lucky bastard.'' Paul snarled at Jared causing him to back off, but Paul grabbed Jared by the arm before he went anywhere.
"What, those are the Morningstars? The people we're keeping an eye on?'' Jared nodded a smirk on his face.
"Yep, good luck brother.'' Jared started to walk off, but Paul grabbed him again
"Sam just said to keep an eye on them, and I imprinted on Jade Morningstar. You don't see a problem with this?'' Paul asked. Jared shrugged off Paul.
"Think Paul, do you smell like vamps? Do you think they would bold enough to come onto our land?'' Jared asked. Taking a deep breath, the first thing he smelled was coconut, jasmine, and mint. His gaze drifted to Jade, that had to her scent, it was the strongest out of everyone here. Her father Lucifer smelled of leather, cigarettes, and aged scotch. He saw a little girl in a pirate costume run up to her sister with a couple of the local kids, who Paul could only assume was maybe her little sister carried a scent of chocolate, bubblegum, and strawberries. He watched as Lucifer easily interact with his own daughters, but seemed to be very awkward with the other kids. No, if they are there it has to be connected with the Cullens right? It was all too much of a chance that they moved in right after the Cullens left town. Lahote you're thinking too much. Go talk to her. Now. Sam ordered. Paul really hated it when he used that damn alpha voice. He felt his body go forward as if moving on its own accord. He watched as moved closer, as Lucifer mouthed to Jade "You got this.' and gave her a thumbs up. Jade on the other hand looked ready to bolt, he watched as she turned her head again and mouth, "Not yet, not yet' Lucifer gave her a stern look before picking up Jade's little sister to join the blond woman who was over with the elders. Paul with only half of his usual amount of confidence approached his imprint.
"Uh..'' Off to a great start Paul, great start.
"Are just gonna stand there and stare at or you gonna say something?'' Jade asked. Paul blinked; he did expect an Irish accent.
"So.. you're Irish?''
