The Power of The Law
Follow up Right Side of Wrong. Acting New York DA Mandy Rose once again finds herself pulled into the life of Riley Morgan
Sorry it took me so long to get something back up on the site. Just have to admit with all that has been going on in the world I just struggled to find time to write and motivation to get something done.
Chapter 1
Riley Morgan stood to his for now boss Shawn Michaels both were dressed in formal uniforms at one table in front of another table with a group of nine members of NYPD upper command. "I say we vote," Hunter who was part of the panel says. Sounded great to Riley. This whole damn hearing was to detriment if he should be removed from the force. The official story was Riley's reported death was done to draw out any potential partners Dean Ambrose had been working with. The real reason was simple it allowed to Riley to get justice for his father. He had killed the man that shot his dad who just happened to be the DA of New York City. The timing had raised every red flag but there was no evidence. It helped Johnny's wife Candice had testifed Riley had been laid up in bed removing from a bullet to the stomach.
Candice hadn't been lying Riley had really been shot and it been torture getting out of bed to deal with Mizainin. She also had no idea Riley had killed him. That would be a secret held between Riley, Shawn and the rest of the team. Well also Adam and his boys. Technically because Riley's "Death" hadn't been cleared with command before hand he was in trouble. Really the sole reason Riley was here was there were way to many politicians walking around with badges at One Police Plaza these days. The panel had nine members on it. Riley needed at least six votes to get his job back. Hunter went first one for Riley. Second was Commander Bischoff a no. Yeah if Bischoff had his way Riley wouldn't even be able to watch old episodes of Law and Order while in New York. Two more votes to remove him from the force. Than came a vote to keep him. Finally the vote was tied four four coming down to Bruce Prichad or as Riley called him behind his back Pecker Head. Prichard had been on the force for years always behind a desk he was total yes man that rose up ranks by kissing the right asses.
"Alright Bruce what do you say?" Bischoff asks clearly believing that Riley is about to be kicked off the force. "My vote is return Detective Morgan to his position with Intelligence," Prichard says sound like his about to throw up. "What?" Bischoff yells losing all decorum. "You heard me," Prichard says. "We have his vote Eric," Hunter says. Bischoff is clearly pissed off. "Detective Morgan welcome back to the force," Hunter says. "Thank you sir," Riley says.
One Night Earlier
"What the hell are you doing here?" Bruce Prichard yells as he walks into his living room and finds Shawn waiting for him. "We need to talk Bruce. How are you voting at Riley's hearing?" Shawn asks. "You have no right to be in here. But you want to talk about your little lackey he's done!" Bruce yells. "Riley is a good cop," Shawn says. "Riley Morgan is a thug with a badge! He has a very out of date mindset of what an officer of the law is supposed to be doing. And I pray that evidence surfaces that will show he killed one of the best DA's New York ever had," Bruce rants. "Sorry you feel that way Bruce. See Riley isn't perfect. But he's the cop this city need some times," Shawn says. "He's done Shawn no amount of begging is going to save him. If anything you need worry about your own career," Bruce claims.
Shawn reaches into his jacket and tosses a stack of photos onto the coffee table. Prichard looks down and his blood runs cold. Its photos of him with a hooker. "Where did you get those?" He asks his voice breaking. "I've had these for years. Its a long story but I wound up finding out about your little habbit. Its a chip I held onto. You vote against Riley this and a lot more comes out. We clear?" Shawn asks. "You would really blackmail me?" Bruce asks. "You were the one pushed the command to make me a Sargent and put me in charge of a unit. Did you really think I wouldn't do anything to protect my team?" Shawn asks. "Fine just don't let anyone else see those," Bruce pleads.
The next day
Mandy sat in what was her temporary office with Mike gone the Governor had appointed her the acting District Attorney of New York City. In a few months a special election would be held to find Mike's replacement. For now Mandy's job was to keep the train rolling. Assign prosecutors to cases. Make sure the rules of the court were being followed. The door her office. "Yes Ember," She says annoyed at her assistant. "I thought you would want to know reports are Riley Morgan has been instated," Ember says. "I head that last night," Mandy says not flinching. "Some of the ADA's want to know if anything is going to be done?" Ember asks. Mandy knew she had a point. The issue was there was no evidence Mike was dead much less that anyone had killed him. "I'll talk to the rest of the team," Mandy finally says.
The Seventy Second Intelligence Bullpen
"Welcome back we got work to do," Mickie James says as Riley enters the bullpen. "What I don't even get a second to make sure you guys didn't mess up my desk," Riley jokes. "This is one we have wanted for a while. John Layfield is back in town," Mickie explains. "The guy running the black market baby scheme?" Riley asks. "Yeah this time we are getting him," Dana exclaims. "We got a tip he's in town setting up a new operation," Mickie adds. "Great what is the game plan?" Riley asks. "Riley I need you in my office," Shawn yells. "Be right back Riley says heading into the office. Shawn closes the door as Riley sits down. "You are still recovering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Its for the best that you stay at the desk for a few more days," Shawn says.
The were boss and employee but Shawn was for all intensive purposes was Riley adopted father. When Robert Morgan had died it was Shawn that took Riley and his sister Liv in. As a result sometimes Riley wondered sometimes where the boss began and the father ended. "You are keeping me on the bench?" Riley asks. "Riley last time we dealt with Layfield you got made. I would tell you to stay in the van but I know if something goes down you won't. Riley you are still recovering you aren't fit to come off the bench," Shawn tells him. "Candice gave me a clean bill of health," Riley reminds his superior. "Riley you got shot and nearly died because you ran off without telling me. You know I don't have many rules but the one rule is I keep this team safe. Right now to do that I need out of the field," Shawn says his tone making it clear there is no room for argument.
Later that day
Riley was at his desk catching up on paperwork. It was part of the job a part he hated. Needing to actually sign something he opened a drawer to get a pen on top of the various things he had in there was a photo of his little sister Liv. She had been gone nearly two months now. He was pulled from his thoughts as the phone on his desk rang. "Intelligence this is Morgan." Desk Sargent Trish Stratus was on the line down in the main part of the station. "Riley I have acting DA Amanda Rose down here. She would like to see you… please tell me I can toss her out," Trish says. "Send her up I need a break from this crap," Riley says. "Your funeral." Riley stashed the report he was going over in his desk and faced the stairway.
Rose appears about a minute later. "Detective welcome back from the grave," Mandy greets. Riley isn't sure if she is trying to insult him or make a joke. "I'm sorry you got pulled into… I'm sorry my nut job of an ex partner kidnapped you," He says which he meant. It was bad enough Dean's revenge had done a lot of damage. "Wasn't your fault. But thank you," Mandy says. "Look what can I help you with?" Riley asks. He felt bad but she got kidnapped he still didn't trust her it wasn't that long ago she had been trying to put him jail. So he wanted to make this interaction short. "I also wanted to inform you that the next hearing on the Orton case is slated for next week. I'll need you in court," Mandy informs him. "No problem. I can't wait to see that bastard in jail for good," Riley says.
"I just hope you can hold your temper," Mandy says. "Meaning what?" Riley asks. "Well I worry what they might say about Liv. I don't need you snapping on the stand Detective," Mandy says. "That's right Detective! I've actually testified in court more times than I can count. I know what I am doing. Maybe check your records. There has been a suspect that got off because of something I said while in a court room," Riley yells. "Well you seem to be on the verge of snapping," Mandy replies yelling as well. "You know you are a bigger pain than that bullet that was in my gut," Riley complains. "Well you are no joy. Hopefully when I wrap up the Orton case I can get far away from you," Mandy says before storming off and down the steps. Riley turns back to desk.
He stars to work again when he hears Rose coming back up the steps. "What else do you want?" "I haven't even said anything yet," A male voice says. "As if my day can't get any worse," Riley says. "Anyway to talk to the guy that saved your life." "Save my life? I tend to recall due to you I got tossed back into a squad thanks to a bomb going off," Riley recalls. "I tried to warn you." "Look Jericho, my boss isn't here so what ever you need..." "I'm not looking for Sargent Michaels. I came to talk to you Riley," Chris Jericho says taking a seat. "What the FBI doesn't keep you busy enough? You need to come here what an officer of the law is doing," Riley taunts. "Actually I'm plenty busy. I'm putting together a a new task force," Jericho says.
Riley has a very bad feeling he knows where this is going. "I'm here to offer you a job," Jericho says. "I have a job," Riley says. "Well this a better job. A job where you can do a lot more good. A job where you can take down some serious bad guys," Jericho says. Riley is about to comment's he's taken down some real serious bad buys, Including a few Jericho and the FBI let slip away. But instead he goes with, "It would also be a job where I'd have to deal with a lot more oversight. I have no desire to have to have answer to the justice department. And I deal with enough politics on the city level I am not about to start dealing with the federal government," Riley says. "You would be able to chase criminals around the country. Some drug dealer kills a family in New York and flees to California you don't have worry about local authorities doing the job. You can be there," Jericho claims.
"Some of the time if I'm lucky. Chris trust me I'm the reason Shawn is bald you don't want to be my boss," Riley says. "Morgan I want you on this team because I need a guy like you. I..." Before Jericho can finish his phone rings. "I'll be right there... Look Riley I need go. But we will talk you need to give me a chance to make my full pitch," Jericho says. "Look fed you want to meet up fine. I'm not leaving NYPD," Riley says as Jericho leaves.
Prison
Randy Orton paced in his cell. He had been in this jail for months now. As a result he had all the patterns down. He knew when the guards did there patrols. He knew which guards gave a damn and which were just there to log time for the pay check. "I will be out of here soon enough," Orton thinks as one of the more strict guards passes the cell. "I got some unfinished business," Orton thinks.
