Chapter 3
Call In Sick
Speed, Leaf and their pokemon woke up from their sleep and were back on the trail walking to Pewter City to claim to beat the gym……. If they hadn't gotten themselves lost. Speed was looking through a map as Shinx was sleeping on his shoulder and his other pokemon in his backpack. Leaf was getting more agitated the more she walked before groaning.Leaf: Speed! Just admit we were lost!
Speed: I know exactly where we are going, Leaf. We just got to take turns here.
As he says that he slams into a tree face first waking up Shinx.
Shinx: Shi Shinx! (Are we finally here?!)
Speed runs his head as Leaf shakes her head while Bulbasaur just smacks his forehead.
Speed: Ok we may be a little lost.
Everyone: Ugh!
Leaf: Speed we've been walking for hours. We have to get to Pewter City!
Speed: Don't worry, I bet we're pretty close.
They all groaned as they kept on walking. A few minutes later they hear chattering in the distance.
?: Ugh, where are you Vaporeon?
Leaf turns to Speed.
Leaf: Who's that?
Speed: I don't know but they seem to need help.
They both went over to a voice to see a blond-haired young man, crouching around in a bush.
?: Vaporeon! Where are you?
They come from behind him and tap him on the shoulder.
Speed: Hey. Do you need some help?
The man screamed and backed up before falling into the bush. He tried to kick out as his screams were muffled. They just sweatdrop.
Speed/Leaf: (Is this guy, ok?)
They both grabbed a leg and pulled him out of the bush. When he got out he immediately crawled into the ball.
?: Please! Dont hurt me!
Speed: Dude we're not gonna hurt you.
Leaf: Yeah, are you ok?
He lifts up his head seeing their faces with reassuring smiles. Speed reaches out his hand to get him back on his feet before a blast of water comes out of nowhere, knocking his hand back. A Vaporeon then jumped out of a bush standing between the blond boy and Speed.
Vaporeon: Vap Vapor Vap! (Stay away from him!)
Speed stood back as Shinx jumped from his shoulder and got in front of him.
Shinx: Shi Shinx! (You stay away from my friends!)
Leaf: Is that his Vaporeon?
Speed: Must be.
Speed then pulls out his Pokedex.
Pokedex: Vaporeon the Bubble Jet Pokemon (Female). It Lives close to water. Its long tail is ridged with a fin which is often mistaken for a mermaid's.
The Vaporeon growled at the trainers when the blond boy stepped in.
?: Vaporeon! They were just trying to help me, you don't have to be this overprotective.
Vaporeon snorted and jumped onto his shoulder.
?: Ugh sorry about that. Let me introduce myself. I'm Lay Rivers and this is Vaporeon.
Speed: I'm Speed Nashito, this is my best friend Leaf and my other best friend Shinx.
Lay: Thank you for helping me. We were just going to collect something when this one wanted to play.
He points a thumb to Vaporeon making her puff up her cheeks.
Lay: But anyway, if there's anything you need. Just ask me.
Leaf: Well we do need a place to stay since it's getting dark.
Lay: Oh, if you need a place to stay. You can stay at my home for a while.
Speed: That'll be nice.
Lay led our heros through the woods when they came to a small village.
Lay: Welcome to Shinzo Village! My home!
Leaf, Speed, and their pokemon looked around seeing everyone getting along. Kids were running around as the adults were happily talking. It was a quiet peaceful village, but there was one thing that bothered Speed…
Speed: (Where are all the pokemon?)
Lay then led him through the village, greeting the newcomers, when they arrived at his house.
Lay: Mom! I'm home!
They hear cooking in the kitchen and hearing a slight yell.
Lay's Mom: Welcome home sweetie! Dinner will be ready in a minute.
Lay: OK! You guys can take a seat if you want.
They all take a seat on the couch, Bulbasaur and Rattata crawl out of Speed's backpack and yawn, and Leaf lets Squirtle and Venonat out.
Speed: Hey sleepy heads, how was your sleep?
Bulbasaur/Rattata: Bulba/Ratta. (Good.)
Bulbasaur jumped onto the couch and Leaf pet Squirtle on the head. They then heard a quiet scream and looked at Lay seeing that he had stars in his eyes.
Lay: You have a Squirtle and a Bulbasaur!
Speed: Yeah, we got them when we left Pallet Town.
Lay: Where did you get them from? I know Bulbasaur usually live in grasslands and Squirtles near water.
Leaf: we got them from Prof. Oak.
Lay's eyes almost popped out of his sockets as heard the name.
Lay: PROFESSOR OAK!!!!
There was then a slight jump from everyone as he screamed when a woman with pink hair came from the kitchen. This with Nurse Iyashi Joy or Joy for short.
Joy: Lay! Keep it down, there's no reason to scream.
Lay: Sorry mom.
Joy looked over to Speed and Leaf.
Joy: Oh are you here to heal your pokemon?
Speed: No, Lay said we could stay here the night.
Leaf: We can leave if you want us too.
Joy: No, no, it's starting to get dark anyway. You can have the room upstairs.
Speed: Thank you Mrs. Joy. We appreciate it.
Joy: It's no problem sweetie. Dinner is set at the table right now and I even got pokemon food in the cabinet for your pokemon.
They all enter the pretty big dining room. Joy served up some lasagna and poured in some pokemon food for their pokemon.
Speed: Man this is delicious Mrs. Joy!
Leaf: We've haven't eaten like this since we started our journey.
Joy: Well eat as much as you like.
They kept on eating when Speed asked a question.
Speed: So you said something about healing our pokemon, right?
Joy: Oh yes, my house is the village pokemon center. We don't get quite a few people here since we're a little deep in the forest.
Leaf: Yeah we're lucky we found the place.
She then had an agitated face and glared at Speed.
Leaf: We would be in Pewter City if he didn't get his loss!
Speed: Hey! Reading a map is hard!
Leaf: I could read the map better than you can.
They both bump heads as they keep on fighting. Iyashi giggled as they kept fighting and Lay was deeply confused.
Pokemon Pov.
On the pokemon side of things, they've been chowing down on the lasagna pokebites.
Shinx: This is so good.
Bulbasaur: It's like a huge explosion of flavor in my mouth.
Rattata kept on eating when he heard a cry.
Rattata: What was that?
Venonat: Hear what?
Rattata: It sounded like a cry-
He then heard it again this time a little louder and jumped.
Rattata: Now I'm definitely not crazy!It's a pokemon cry!
Rattata then started to run to the source of the noise before he was grabbed by Speed.
Normal Pov.
Speed: What's wrong buddy?
Rattata: Ratta ratta Rattata ratta! (I heard a noise somewhere in the house!)
Speed was just confused not knowing what he was saying.
Speed: I wish I can understand you better.
Leaf: Maybe he's still hungry.
Lay: No that can't be it. He has some more food left.
Rattata sighed before tugging on his sleeve.
Speed: I think he wants me to follow him.
Rattata nodded and they all got up and left the room. They entered the living room and Rattata tried to focus on the sound.
Speed: Where is he leading us?
Leaf: We just have to find out.
Rattata heard the cry again and went down the hall with the trainers by his side.
Lay: Mom their-
Joy: Let them find out.
Lay moves back a little and nods to his mother. With our heros they were in front of a door.
Speed: Is this the place that got you jumpy?
Rattata nodded and Speed slowly opened the door and what was in the room surprised them. There were dozens of pokemon in containers looking absolutely sick.
Speed: That's why there weren't pokemon around.
Joy: That's right.
Joy appeared behind them, looking sadly.
Joy: The pokemon in our village have been hit with a deadly virus. We've been trying to find the antidote, but we have nothing of this virus to take care of.
She puts a hand to a container containing a poor Chansey who was breathing slowly.
Joy: If we don't find the antidote right away. They can be-
Speed: No!
Speed cut her off. She looked at Speed who had his fist clenched.
Speed: We will find this antidote and we'll heal all of these pokemon or my name is Speed Nashito.
Lay: How can we find it? We've been searching for weeks and nothing has come of it.
Speed: There has to be something we can do!
Rattata then yelled out and they looked over to him. He points to his nose and starts sniffing around.
Leaf: Oh, so Rattata can figure out where the poison is.
Rattata nodded and they all went outside.
Joy: Please be careful. Your pokemon can be affected too.
Leaf: We'll be careful.
Rattata then starts to sniff out the smell and smell something foul.
Speed: Hm, must be coming from there. You guys go onto your pokeballs for this.
They all put their pokemon in their pokeball except Shinx and Rattata, the former who refuse to get in theirs. They were walking in the woods as Rattata was leading the pack.
Speed: I still think you should go in your pokeball.
Shinx: Shinx shi Shinx (Over my dead body.)
Speed sighs as they continue on when they hear a yell and see Lay come running to them.
Lay: Guys let me help!
Leaf: Lay! It's dangerous to be out here!
Lay: Well if I want to be the next Nurse Joy then I need to help pokemon whenever I can.
Speed: Wait, you're becoming a Nurse Joy?
Lay: Yeah. All Joy's become them. It's a family thing.
Speed: Well everyone, stay close. It might get a little messy.
They kept on walking through the forest when they caught a horrible smell. They all cover their noses trying not to get caught in the smell.
Leaf: Ugh! Speed, did you take a bath today because if you didn't you reek.
Speed: That's not me! I took a bath in the river just like you did! You saw me!
Leaf: And I hit you on the top of the head for it!
Lay then get in between the two to stop the fighting.
Lay: Guys stop the fighting! We have more important things to do!
Shinx then smelled the air and started getting a sick look and almost fell off of Speed's shoulder before Speed caught him.
Speed: Oh no, Shinx!
Leaf: The smell must be what is infecting the pokemon.
Lay: Then let's follow the smell.
They both nod and the heros went through the woods until they got to the source of the smell which reaked at this point.
Speed: This must be where the smell is coming from. Oh I think my nose is destroyed at this point.
The traliners all had tears in their eyes. It's like they cut dozens of onions at once and squeezed into their eyes. They then hear some voices.
?: Come on! Keep it up boys!
Leaf: Who is that?
Lay: Whatever it is, it must be trouble.
They all spoke behind some trees and what they saw surprised them. It was some Team Rocket grunts making dozens and dozens of Koffing and Weezing spraying out fumes from the second.
TRB(Team Rocket Boss): Come on boys! Keep those Weez.
The Koffing and Weezing jet being forced to blow out fumes from their bodies. The team was terrified of what they saw.
Leaf: T-T-Their forcing p-pokemon to do their bidding…
Speed clenched his teeth as well as his fist.
Speed: No pokemon deserves to go through that kind of pain.
Lay looked on through the hurting pokemon before he grabbed a pokeball from his belt and through onto the field.
Lay: Go Vaporeon!
Vaporeon came out with a cry, ready to fight.
Lay: Let go of those pokemon!
Team Rocket looked towards Lay who had a determined face on and started laughing.
TRB: You think you can go against Team Rocket kid. We were powerful back then when Giovanni was leading us and were still going great and strong.
Lay: That doesn't matter as long as those Wheezings and Koffing keep pumping out those fumes pokemon will get sick.
The boss chuckled and crossed his arms.
TRB: That's the point. We're gonna have this spread around the Kanto region and put it up for ransom. If we don't get the money, well you know.
The trainers gasped before Lay clenched his fist.
Lay: I won't let you. I'm supposed to be the one taking care of all the pokemon in the world!
He raised his fist looking him dead in his eye.
Lay: If you're gonna hurt pokemon like this then it is I as a Nurse Joy duty to stop you! Vaporeon, Water Gun! Go!
Vaporeon then shot water out her mouth, aiming for the boss when something came out the ground and blocked the water gun. It was an Onyx.
Lay: An Onyx?!
TRB: You thought it'll be that easy to defeat me. Keep working boys this will be a sinch.
Lay growled as Onyx tried to smash into Vaporeon but she dodged towards the side before going for another Water Gun. It was effective against Onyx but he powered through and swung his tail to Vaporeon.
Lay: Vaporeon, get out of there!
Vaporeon dodged again but wasn't quick enough to see the rock come hurling towards her and hit her.
Lay: Vaporeon?!
TRB: Rock Throw a pretty good move. Come on kid, you know you won't be able to beat me. Onyx finishes the Vaporeon off with Iron Tale!
Onyx raised its tail as it was coated with iron and went for Vaporeon. She couldn't get up, being exhausted as the tail came down on her in a puff of smoke.
Lay: Vaporeon?!
TRB: Pathetic. Looks like you arent what you say, huh kid.
Lay had tears in his eyes as he saw his pokemon get crushed. As the cloud of dust clears off they both gasp. Vaporeon is alive on Shinx's back. Speed and Leaf ran to him as Vaporeon got off of Shinx.
Speed: Good job buddy.
Shinx cheered as Vaporeon returned to Lay.
Lay: Oh Vaporeon. I was so worried.
Vaporeon: Vape vape Vaporeon (Don't worry, I'm ok.)
They all then hear clapping from the Team Rocket Boss.
TRB: Oh what a great reunion, but I got tired of this fighting. Boys take care of them.
He turned around seeing that his grunts were all tied up by vines as Bulbasaur and Venonat sat on them, Bulbasaur waving his vine.
TRB: What happened?!
Speed: We kinda took care of them already.
Leaf: Pretty easy actually.
The boss was pissed and glared at the trainers.
TRB: That doesn't matter! I can defeat all on my own. Onyx, take them down with Rock Throw!
Onyx dug into the ground and threw a huge boulder at the trainers.
Lay/Leaf: Squirtle/Vaporeon Water Gun!
Both Squirtle and Vaporeon fired water guns and crushed through the rock before Speed got in front.
Speed: Shinx, Bite!
Shinx charged at Onyx as his fangs glowed white and bit on it making it cry out and shook him off.
Lay: Vaporeon, Water Gun, again!
Vaporeon fired another Water Gun and fired in at Onyx hitting it dead on to the ground with swirls in his eyes. The boss was flabbergasted.
TRB: Beaten by a couple of kids.
Speed: Were actually sixteen.
The boss growled as he called in a plane and it took off.
TRB: That doesn't matter because I will have my revenge or my name isn't Big Boss!
He then flew as the teens were laughing.
Speed: His name is Big Boss. That is what he wants us to call him?!
Leaf: It's so ridiculous!
After the laugh they released all the Weezing and Koffing and they were very thankful even though they pretty much stink.
Speed: Don't worry guys but can you back up. I need to breathe.
With Lay he and another Koffing were thanking him.
Lay: It's no problem. I'll help any pokemon.
As went to leave with Speed and Leaf, Koffing nudged one of his pokeballs.
Lay: You want to come with me?
Koffing nods as tal.jes the pokeball and throws it at Koffing, catching him. He grabs Koffing from the pokeball before turning around seeing Speed standing in a waiting fashion.
Lay: What?
Speed: You got to do the thing.
Lay: What thing?
Leaf walked over holding both Venonat and Squirtle.
Leaf: It's his thing where you lift up your pokeball into the air when you catch your pokemon. It's kinda Speed's thing.
Speed:it just gets the blood pumping and I also love seeing others do it. So please, do it.
Lay just shrugged and lifted his pokeball.
Lay: I caught a Koffing!
Speed: Now that's what I'm talking about!
Leaf: Let's just go.
The heroes then went through the woods and when they arrived at the village all the people were running around with their pokemon. Iyashi and her Cleffery then came around and hugged the trainers.
Iyashi: Oh thank you for saving the pokemon. As soon as the pokemon started feeling better, it knew it had to be you three.
Speed: It's no problem Mrs. Joy but we should be leaving for Pewter City to earn our gym badges.
Leaf: If we don't get lost on the way.
They then started to leave the village when they were stopped by Lay and Vaporeon.
Lay: Hey! Can I join you guys? I was thinking about being a traveling Nurse Joy. Taking care of pokemon while also exploring the world. I can heal your pokemon but I'm still in training so i'm not that good yet.
Speed and Leaf looked at each other and smiled.
Speed: Of course you can join.
Leaf: It'll be a lot more fun with the tree of us.
Lay smiled and after a few moments of packing he was on his way with Speed, Leaf and Shinx on their journey. People wave to him as he waves back.
Lay: Bye! I'll miss you all!
Iyashi: Make sure to wash between your ears and brush your teeth.
Lay: I will mom (Embarrassing!)
The End
Speed: And now they're off on their incredible journey now with a new companion.
Violet: But things will be rocky when they get to Pewter City in…
