Chapter 5: I Got the Power!

The island of Mata Nui

Ga-Koro

"Macku! Look out!"

Len's warning came just in time, as the boat barely missed crashing into the sea cliff. Macku was quick to steer it away.

"Whew, thanks Len."

"You really should pay attention…" Heliu and Ruhuo chorused.

Macku sighed. "Hey, until your parents get back from doing new Toa things, Nokama put me in charge." She looked at the cliff, not knowing that Mulan, Kara, and Shang were inside of it. "Now, care to explain more about the time Toa Mulan lit someone on fire?"

"Ow…" Mulan woke up in the warm shallows. She held her head. "Did someone capture the banner of the war wagon that hit me?"

Kara looked at her wife with a mix of concern and amusement. "I'm pretty sure if you got hit with a war wagon, our husband would have done more than captured its banner." She looked over at Shang, who was trying to fish with his bare hands in a separate tidal pool. And judging by the grumbles, it wasn't going as smoothly as it did in training.

"And we still haven't figured out the elements!" Shang's complaint became audible.

"Uh Shang?" Kara prompted.

Shang turned around to see that the water around Mulan was bubbling and steaming.

"Feels nice, you should join in." Mulan leaned back and let her hair spread out in the water. A slight scarlet glow enveloped her as she breathed deeply.

"Fire energy." Kara concluded. "Now we just have to figure out ours. Nokama said I have Air and you have Earth."

"Well, we still have some time…" Shang didn't see how this was supposed to work. But he was determined to figure it out.

"Not a lot of time." corrected Mulan. She had gotten out of the water, and made a fire for tea. "Kara, didn't you do something like this at camp with Len?"

Kara closed her eyes, and reached into her memory…

Flashback

Summit Camp

"Race you!" said Kara. She took off in a sprint around the Horseshoe, an arc-shaped hill near the camp's entrance. Lennie was neck-and-neck with her bunk-sister, but soon a thought distracted her from speed.

There's something... powerful about her. Only one way to find out if she can use it!

As Kara neared their unofficial finish line, she felt a strong tailwind. Her long legs barely made contact with the ground, like a young eagle testing its flight. She was nearing the railing of a bunk's porch - and when she jumped over it, she was indeed in flight! At that moment, the wind beneath her slowed. She struggled to stay airborne, and crash-landed on a rug… inside her boyfriend's bunk.

"Kara Sanderson!" a male counselor scolded.

Kara didn't want to get in trouble for entering a teen boy's bunk. She ran out as fast as she could. Then she vaulted over the railing - and tumbled down the hill.

"Ow…" she groaned. Lennie was quick to help Kara up.

"You have more power than I thought."

Ga-Koro

"Kara! You did it!" Shang and Mulan were overjoyed as a strong wind swept through the cave. Kara was in complete focus, and was hovering in mid-air!

"Did what?" asked Kara, before realizing the situation she was in. "Oh, flying? So long as I don't crash land in the wrong bunk, I'll be fine!" She laughed at the memory, the joy carrying her higher and higher. The top of the cliff had an opening, and Kara went through it. The tropical sea breeze carried her higher and faster, like she was a hawk on a thermal. She let out a victory cry…

...and almost collided with Lewa. She did a roll to avoid him.

"Watch it!" Kara snapped.

"Sorry-oops?" Lewa was surprised but not exactly apologetic. Could this be the new Air Toa?

"I'll show you sorry-oops, flyboy!" Shang had seen the whole thing from his point on the ground. Kara, not wanting Shang to get "manly urges" and hurt the resident Air Toa, waited for Lewa to leave. Then she went back into the cliff.

Mulan had it under control though. "He has two swords and elemental power. Don't mess with him!"

"He almost hurt our wife!" Shang deflated when he saw Kara landing.

"Key word almost, Shang. I'm fine. Now you have to figure out your element of Earth."

Shang was still fuming and didn't notice the ground shaking. That is, until the tremors got too strong for him to balance. He fell in his fishing pool. One of the fish jumped and he caught it in mid-air.

"Finally! Now we can have some breakfast… wait, did I just make an earthquake?"

Kara laughed. "Yes. Yes you did."
