Chapter Two:
The time seem to flow by fast, I could imagine the stress eating at her. She planned a reveal for us tonight. I wouldn't began to understand her methods. What she did manage to reveal. Was that Jorge and few others went scavenging for parts, while some went black to the apartment complex back in the Scorch. Shun had plenty of gear stashed away. It's a relief that the Right Arm still has a station posted out there.
Loss in my work I hear the sound of children enter the shack. The kids we'd rescued from the Scorch. In the front was Miles and his brother who suffered from burns Hyde, kept the lead. Hyde has grown older his burn marks have healed. Yet the scars will be permanent. The other kids came rushing behind to greet Curie and Elizabeth. They also give me a small smile. Curie little group was coming together.
The girls consist of Matilda, Scarlett, Elizabeth, Lilac and Freya. The boy were the brother's Hyde and Miles, Gideon, Skylar, Leopold and Adrian. Curie started handing out devices to each of them.
"You all know where to set them correct?"
"Yes!" They all shouted out loud at once.
"Damn Curie, this your little militia?"
"Oh no, nothing like that. The kids wanted to help and I needed assistance."
"And Elizabeth?"
"My right hand, she got a talent for this. The more people we have working like I do the better we have a chance of having a self sustaining life here.
"Curie, you're outstanding. Shall we break for lunch?"
"Oh that's taken care of, so just keep working for the time being." Her answer stern. Leaning back with the tools in my hand, the children with satchels go speeding out.
"Big sis. I'm done should we go ground the the you know what?"
"Ah thanks for reminding me. Ross do that thing and contact Nyx, have him tell Leon to bring his short ass here." Curie asks.
"Aye aye Captain." I agree with a laugh.
'Hey Nyx, you busy?' I call out to him.
'Sorta, what's up?' He replies.
'If you see Leon, tell him Curie wants him over to her shack now.' I relay.
'Will do.'
'Thanks a lot man, later.' I thanked him as I watch Curie and Elizabeth carry a large a huge wooden pole, attached with all manner of wires and things I had no idea were.
A while later I found myself, with circuit boards in hands. Which Curie returned for, impressed that I got so many completed. Following behind her was Leon with a few pack lunches. Gally in tow followed behind him. He was a builder once in the past, so he would be a great asset to the project. He nods before grabbing a handful of supplies before heading back out.
Leon passes me a sandwich, which with out hesitation I managed to scoff down. A well needed break. But to bad it didn't last.
"Ross, take the transistor and climb on the roof and attach the components to the the pylon." Curie said with direct instructions.
I grab the items she told me to and made my way outside. Sunset was nearly here, as darkness crept up slowly. I wall run up the side of the shack after tossing my tools.
On top of the shack was a good view of the base camp and outstretching forest. On the roof was a line of panels aligned together in synchronicity. Fussing with the wires I managed to connect the wires to both the panels and pylon dug into the ground. The pylon was hefty piece of wood staked in place. Wrapped in copper wires which lead to an attached circuit board. The kids were at work spooling the line every which way.
It's impressive, still weren't sure what's this all for? But once im finished I leap down and rejoin with Curie.
"I'll stay behind to make sure everything goes off without a hitch."
"I'll remain as well, so yeah." I say shuffling my hands in my pockets.
"If this really work's, well- well. It means my work load just increased. Can't believe it took two years to scrounge all this together." Curie beams.
Night was here as the last of the sun fades over the western sky. I couldn't help but feel pins and needles in my arms. The two began walking to the pylon, giving it a once over. Then she let out a sharp whistle.
It echoed out very far, until another whistle matching the same variant cried out in the distance. More and more as the whole beach and forest came alive. And then she flipped the switch.
I couldn't believe it. One by one lights trickled on all across the home base leading in to the forest. In a flash the night became illuminated by a stroke of engineering genius.
"Yes!" Curie shrieks jump on me grabbing as tight as possible.
"Curie you're genius, you established electricity for us. Do you know what this means?"
"No more surviving. We can now live, we can expand. The ideas are flowing non-stop."
"Come on, lets go greet everyone. I'm sure Vince will be excited. Let's go bask in the victory." I suggest, tugging her along by her hands.
The two of us run across the beach and to base camp which is so bright from the distance.
"Between you and me, this is a temporary solution. Solar energy will get us so far. But this is victory no less."
"I understand. For now we celebrate!" I shout in glee. As we make are way to the other's. I couldn't believe it. Our home has electricity. No matter how finite, this is a huge step up for us. I'm happy to been part of this undertaking. It was a small step to a lasting future. The two of us are welcomed by the cheers of many. It's your night Curie. Enjoy it.
Inside of undisclosed location, men and women are a blaze with work as something has brought them to a alert. It didn't make sense, shouldn't make sense. Having been abruptly awaken at early morning.
Pandora shuffled out of her bed slipping on her robe covering a very loose night ware. Her hair laid messy and undone as her assistant came to retrieve the woman.
"Before you even start, coffee now!" She screamed. "I'll be in the command room!" She yell and half yawned dragging her bare feet across the cold chrome floors.
"Right away, Chancellor Paige." He left from her side to fulfil her request.
Pandora sighed at state of her staff who was abuzz in the command room. Her life had been tame these two years since her induction. Not to say she sat idle, she was busy worker. To the men and women who work along side her or for her, she was capricious God. A perfectionist to a fault. Some say she was obsessed with her pet projects.
Some say she's a woman possessed to carry out own her will at any cost. But who can tell what's truth and rumor. To Pandora it's baseless conjecture. Pandora only cared about results. After all her name was tarnished by her predecessor.
"Calm down, I'm sure this could of waited into morning!" She screamed slamming her fist down on the table.
"Here Chancellor!" He said passing her a cup of coffee which she sipped.
"Now tell me, what's the urgency?"
"Ma'am, recon base Delta, in Tropic of Cancer. Well it picked up a power spike a few moments ago.
"That's off from the equator, correct? Why is there a recon base so far out?"
"It's a island. Know by the Paradise or The Safe Haven. It was Ava Paige, contingency plan, had her prime directive failed. It was established to be a bastion for Immunes to restart the world." Her assistant went into detail.
"It's impossible, it's so far out from any mainland. Who could possibly be residing there?" Pandora pondered.
"Recon Delta is inactive, but still functioning. It picked up a power spike on the island and reported back to all subcoms." A woman in a lab coat brought up as began adding files to the massive touch monitor.
"Chancellor, we're receiving satellite images shortly."
"And they said that was a waste of resources. Bring them up!"
Images began to show on the screens as from space it view was capable of capturing the luminosity from out at sea. The satellite was just one of her pet projects.
The island appeared brighten by lights expanding a nice portion of the island. A view of people of various ages are going about the their lives. Numbers of a serial code began appearing on the board. To people shock and disbelief.
"Subjects."
"It's a armed militia down there, it's likely the Right Arm."
"They must be there. I want a sweep of biometrics. I want intel on who's who. Roland have a squad ready to jump to Delta."
"As you command."
"We must recover any assets to our cause."
"Ma'am, subject B1. Aris. Aris has shown his loyalty twice. He's still has his implant, he's a asset to be brought in."
"Fine, make the B1 a priority. Once the men reach Delta, the over rider will be active where he will be intercepted by our men. And brought back, I have the perfect role for him."
"The flat trans is ready to go give the word."
"Start operation switch and bait!"
"You're sure worked up."
"We need the two of them, you know that. Brute force won't work. Janson learned that the hard way."
"So why drag this Aris kid in."
"Report indicate, they will do what ever it takes to bring a friend home. That's how will draw them back."
"Pandora…"
"Roland, it's the only way. I won't allow humanity to wither away. Our work will save us all. Don't misread my lack of emotions for being heartless." She said quietly before walking back to her quarter's, leaving the rest up to the others.
