Hanako had lived in Konoha for a little longer than two years. She'd made a few friends; a girl by the name of Asako, a boy named Kobei, and a boy that seemed to be this villages outcast. It appeared that she had a knack for finding lonely souls. Her parents opened a weapons and poison emporium for the village.
"You never know when you may need it." Was all her parents said when asked why.
Her parents also adored her new friends, almost as much as they loved her. Almost as much as they will love her younger brother when he was born. Asako and Kobei didn't like her other friend though. She could never figure out why they didn't like him. Hanako made it clear though that Naruto was her friend and if they couldn't be his friend then they couldn't be her friend either.
Well, that was the last time they spoke to her. They didn't want to get in trouble for associating with him. Naruto had been guilty about her losing friends over him. Hanako insisted to him, and her parents, that it was no great loss and she would have picked him over them anyway. He was like a fun big brother she'd never had but always wanted.
But even with Naruto, she wanted to go home to Suna. She felt that a large piece of her had been left there. Stated she knew from very pit of her stomach that she was incomplete. One time her mother, unravelling and hormonal from the beginning of her pregnancy, shouted that there was nothing for her there and that this was her home now.
Hanako shouted back that she was lying. That she knew, for a fact, that she was lying. Then she stormed off.
Her father refused to get between the two of them on this argument. He took a firm stance of if there was no objectively right stance for him to take or a possible way to diffuse anything than there was no point to get involved.
Her mother eventually told her that she wasn't mad, she was sorry for shouting, but really she just wanted Hanako to give her new home a chance. A part of Hana did want to. Though mostly she wanted to return to Suna. However, she found she couldn't keep bringing it up. So she needed to find something to distract herself.
After choosing Naruto over them, playing with Asako and Kobei was clearly not an option. She could run deliveries for her parent's shop. But they really didn't need to make many of those. Naruto tended to be fairly busy, during the day anyway and most nights he was at their home joining them for dinner. Her father was quite displeased to hear that he mostly ate ramen.
She could have tried to find more friends. It seemed tedious though. So she decided to take up jogging. Only for a couple hours a day, nothing crazy. At first it was hard, of course it was, and she'd run out of steam rather quickly. Her legs felt like they were going to fall off for weeks. Hanako almost stopped because of that. But, she enjoyed how it felt to really push herself to go further. She reasoned the any pain she felt was from the hard work of starting a new activity and that made it okay.
Then she began to sleepwalk. She's woken up on a neighbor's roof, up in a tree, in a different tree further from home, under a stone bench, just in very random spots around the village. Each time she was woken up in the morning by someone and she had no idea how she got there. Waking she felt only slightly more rested then when she fell asleep.
Hoping it would help her ignore any tiredness, she began to drink coffee throughout the day or highly caffeinated tea and sweets. Anything to keep her energy up.
Her father was growing concerned. Between the sleepwalking, caffeine, darkening under eye circles, how her jogging hobby went from a couple hours a day to a couple hours multiple times a day. Hanako shrugged it off as this was her making the best of the move.
Her mother was also getting bothered by the weeks of high caffeine and sugar intake. She decided she wanted to try something and dug out an old toy of Hanako's.
-When Hanako was a baby she absolutely refused to sleep. Her parents, Nana and Akio tried everything. The most they ever got was naps. But only if one of them consisted held her. It would promptly end if they tried to sit down or set her in her crib. She would also scream if they tried to pass her to someone else, even just for a second.
On her first birthday, at a party she shared with a friends of Nana's son who was a few days younger then her. Hanako got a good night's sleep without someone holding onto her. Someone, they didn't know who or couldn't remember who, gave her a strangely designed tanuki that was filled with sand and possibly dried flowers.
As soon as she hand it in her little hands, she buried her face against it. She slept with it every night, literally laying on top of it.
At three, she decided she no longer wanted or needed it and gave it to her mother. Nana held onto it, intending to give it back when Hana had children of her own.-
Now, Nana slipped the toy onto her daughters bed before going to help her husband with dinner. Hanako found it as she put something away, didn't recognize it and brought it out to ask about it. She found it strangely familiar. Naruto, who was joining them that night, found it creepy. Nana explained the best she could that it had helped her sleep in the past and hoped it would again. Hana adored it, and the thought behind bringing it back out, and went through dinner with it on her lap.
That night, as her mother had hoped, she didn't sleepwalk. However, she did have a nightmare she would describe as horrific though she refused to say what it was about or what made it feel that way.
Nana would give birth to a son that they named Taro. He had tufts of dark red hair, like his mother, and dark eyes. Nana was sure he inherited those from whoever her father was. Her father was one of the best kept secrets, her own mother never told a soul who he was. According to Nana's aunt she didn't even tell him she was expecting. Then she sadly passed while giving birth. Akio had never even questioned Taro's eye color that would have been like questioning Hana's eyes as they were also different from the blue he and Nana had. He was just happy the baby was healthy.
Hana, though she was actually sleeping now seemed to just be drained, rested, but drained. Naruto noticed and assumed it was from the new baby and her just constantly being in motion. He wasn't really away of her nightmares. He decided to skip a few days of academy work . In an effort to brighten her spirits he took her out for ramen, visited a bookstore she liked, things she liked to do really. They played hide and seek. Naruto went really easy on her too. He didn't hide somewhere he knew she would find him. He even pretended her could find her.
It was a fun couple days and she really just took it as a reminder to take breaks. Which she decided to do for a while. Sleep, play with baby Taro, really just relax and just be.
Then she started to feel antsy. Like she needed to be doing something, moving around, anything. She ignored it as she was taking a break from exerting herself. Her fingers began to twitch when she got that antsy feeling.
At this point they'd been in Konoha almost two years. Akio began to write his mother back in Suna about Hanako and what he knew was going on. Feelings of being incomplete, sleepwalking, an unhealthy relationship with caffeine and sugar, nightmares she wouldn't talk about, he need to physically push herself and the recently twitches.
His mother suggested that maybe she was stressed out about something and was trying to preoccupy herself. Or it could be from a subconscious issue she's not even aware of. She also said that if they thought it could help they could send her to come live with her or with Nana's Aunt Kii.
Hanako's parents talked it over while she and her brother slept. Nana adamantly refused... At first. Peeking into her daughters room changed her mind.
Hanako clung to her tanuki. Her face was contorted into a terrified expression. Blankets were thrown from her bed, her stomach exposed. The marking on her stomach slightly visible against her pale flesh in the dim light flooding in from the doorway.
Nana felt an overwhelming pang of emotion as she looked at the mark. Seeing it, she was brought back to the days following Hanako's birth. She had been so tired. It had been a very long, difficult labor. People kept coming and going to see or check on the baby. All Nana wanted was a moment of quiet to sleep. So when her mother in law and Lady Chiyo, a prominent woman in the village, came and asked to borrow Hana...
She didn't really listen to them explain themselves and just said 'Take her.'
Akio had been furious until they brought her back. then he saw the marking and he became absolutely enraged. That was when Hanako refused to sleep.
Hesitantly, Nana decided that maybe it'd be for the best if Hana moved back to Suna. Akio made sure that was what she wanted. Nana bitterly told him that she wanted their daughter to be happy with them. But she wasn't and she did want to go back, so she wasn't going to fight it any longer. He passed the decision along and in the morning they told Hanako what was going to happen.
Telling Hana was easy, they didn't want to do it but it was easy. The hard part was getting Hana to tell Naruto. She put it off for quite a while. They got a family photo taken with Naruto and she still didn't tell him. They packed up her belongings and she still didn't tell him. Her grandmother arrived to collect her, time was running out. Her grandmother told her firmly they wouldn't be leaving until all of her affairs were in order.
At the point she no longer had a choice and had pushed it off until the last minute. So her parent's discussed her typical routine with her grandmother while she took Naruto his copy of the photo. She couldn't look him in the eyes as she handed it to him.
"Hey, Hanako, What's the matter? You look a little down?" He set the photo aside and looked her over, deeply concerned. In front of her, her fingers twitched nervously. Then she threw her arms around him and gave his cheek a small kiss.
"I'm going to be going away soon Naruto. I... I don't know when or even if I'll be back. I'm really really sorry I didn't tell you sooner!" She cried, burying her face into his shoulder.
He was reasonably upset. They were each other's only friend. He returned her embrace with a small squeeze and they spent the rest of the day together. Together they went to Hanako's house where Naruto met her grandmother Kin and they ate a nice family dinner. Kin let Naruto have a few days with Hana before they left, bright and early in the morning.
