Maul arrives on Tatooine in a hate-filled rage to destroy Kenobi, only to encounter Ahsoka. Both are shocked, and have an emotional argument as to why she left. Obi-Wan arrives to try to dispatch an enraged Maul, but is stopped frantically by Ahsoka- which discloses the identity of the father to Obi-Wan.
Kenobi. Kenobi. Kenobi, was all Maul could think about. I'll wipe you from this wretched galaxy, I vow on everything you've made me lose. Maul had been watching the mysterious cloaked figure enter and exit the hut he'd been stalking from the mountain above. It took him weeks to find it. Maul had dreamed of this place. He sensed the masked aura of the Force inside; a lesser Force-user would not have picked up on such subtlety, but Maul could sense a disturbance in the Force the way a shark could smell a drop of blood in the water- and that was exactly what Kenobi was to Maul.
Like a rat in his den, he thought satisfactorily to himself. Maul had scoped the area out for the day prior to entering. He wanted to make sure Kenobi was there when he entered. For a time Maul thought he was not in the hut until he briefly left carrying a small child to Maul's surprise. Why would Kenobi be harboring a child? Maul wondered. He watched curiously at Kenobi as he seemed to play and coo at the child.
A Force user, Maul noted as well- Kenobi was excellent at hiding his aura, but the child was nothing more than a bait ball of midichlorians. Suddenly the child began to cry, and the cloaked figure went inside the hut. Maul waited until nightfall until he decided to move.
Cautiously Maul crept forward, his footsteps silent as a panther in the night. The hut was empty for all Maul could tell, with a faint crying of an infant growing closer and closer as he infiltrated the dwelling. It was dark inside with the exception of candlelight. When Kenobi came into view, Maul slowly revealed himself from the shadows.
"Well well, hiding like a rat in the sands of Tatooine? And what do we have here?" he seethed in a whisper, his red saber glowing brightly. Kenobi gasped and turned around to greet Maul's saber with his own. Their sabers clashed violently, only to his horror the saber's shade of blue was not Kenobi's, nor the face illuminated by the light...
"No," Maul breathed in shock. The child cried loudly in Ahsoka's arms, her shocked blue eyes looking up at his hate-filled yellow ones. It was exactly the vision he'd had of her on Dagobah, her holding the small child in her arms. He was half relieved at knowing it wasn't hers, the other half of him a torrent of emotion.
"Maul…?" she breathed horror.
"Why are you here," he asked. It reminded Ahsoka of the time they first met, when Obi-Wan was tasked with eliminating Maul but delegated the duty to herself- only now, Maul wasn't stirred by a curious affection- only hate, anger, and pain. She could sense it dripping off of him. Their hearts pounded. The hair on Ahsoka's neck prickled. They gazed into each other's eyes intensely, so many words to be said, the only thing breaking the tension being Luke's crying.
"I need to put the baby to sleep," Ahsoka murmured flatly after a long silence. Maul said nothing, only glaring at Ahsoka as she slowly backed away into Luke's room where his crib was, her saber unsheathed and ready to fight off Maul at any notice. When she was out of sight, Maul slammed a fist angrily on the table, cursing under his breath. Why the fuck is she here, he thought viciously. He felt his heart longing for her, which only fueled his anger even more. This complicates things. He also felt his love for her brewing, which he tried in vain to squash.
Meanwhile Ahsoka gently put Luke in his crib. He was still crying, which luckily masked the sound of her hologram on her wrist reaching out to Obi-Wan.
"Ahsoka? Why are you waking me up so late?" Obi-Wan asked groggily.
"Shh-"
"Is Luke alright?" he asked suddenly, more alarmed after hearing his cries. "What's going on?"
"Help," Ahsoka whispered quickly into the hologram before shutting it off. Obi-Wan leapt out of bed, dressing himself immediately and began to make his way towards the extra hut Aunt Beru had on her property where Ahsoka watched over Luke often. It was about a ten minute distance at his speed, something Ahsoka figured. I need to get Maul out of here before then, she thought. Or keep him from killing Luke- or me- or his own child, she added frightenedly. This is not good.
She soothed Luke as much as she could before reluctantly returning to the kitchen where Maul was pacing irritably in wait for her return. When she reentered, he stopped slowly and faced her. The tension between them was painful.
"You need to leave now, and never come back," Ahsoka said plainly. Rage filled him. How dare she after everything, he thought, but composed himself as much as he could- he had a mission for Kenobi, and Ahsoka meant nothing to him anymore as far as he was concerned. Or, rather, tried to concern. Only his revenge mattered now. She had seen to that in her leaving him.
"I'm here for Kenobi. You're dead to me," Maul spat. Ahsoka flinched at his words.
"Then you need to leave now, because he will be here soon."
"Good, I'll have to search for him less. Why would I do that, hm?" Maul seethed.
"Because I don't want to see you be killed."
"Then you won't. No, today marks the end of Kenobi's existence. I will see to that, Tano," he spat. He had never used her name in such a disrespectful manner, but his anger was overwhelming him. Ahsoka's saber dispatched with a thrum, turning the dark room a purple color.
"I don't want to have to help him kill you," Ahsoka's voice broke. This caught Maul's attention- he was not so arrogant as to know that he could not stand a chance alone with Ahsoka and Kenobi simultaneously.
"Then perhaps I should eliminate you first if you so wish," Maul seethed. Ahsoka had never seen him look at her with such pure hatred, yet she could not bring herself to hate him back. I love you, I still do, she thought miserably.
"You could do that? After everything we've been through together? You're better than this, Maul… Please go, I don't want to fight you," she pleaded.
"You could leave me without explanation? After everything we've been through together?" he mocked viciously. "Why not? You hated me enough to leave me, why not kill me and save your precious Kenobi?"
"Because I love you, Maul. I never hated you. Please, just go, I don't want to see you killed," Ahsoka's voice trembled. Maul's eyes squinted with anger, his lip twitched. Maul kicked the kitchen table over, smashing it to pieces in his rage. He snapped and had had enough. He felt as though she'd not only ripped out his heart by leaving, but stomped on it right there in front of him.
"No, no , no. You do not reserve the right to use that word. How dare you, after you left me-"
"Do you think I wanted to leave? I had to!" she yelled at him. Rage had blacked out Maul's mind, his saber swung violently at her, Ahsoka quickly blocking the blow. He's going to kill me, Ahsoka thought to herself. Maul was beyond reasoning with. He wanted to kill Kenobi, which he would do, but first he wanted to know why she left. If he had to kill her in order to get an answer, he was angry enough where he just might've.
"Had to? Implore me, Tano!" he screamed at her. Their sabers clashed wickedly, sending purple embers across the floor. I can't tell him I'm pregnant, she thought.
"You plotted to kill Anakin, how dare you!" she screamed back. Maul swung wildly at her, his saber catching on her sleeve, singing her arm painfully. He's definitely going to kill me, she thought.
"I did it for you, can you not see that? You're a fool to believe Skywalker would not kill you in combat, do you think I'd ever let that happen? Do you really believe he'd change after he tried to kill you on Jedha? Search deep inside yourself and feel for the truth, you know it as well as I do," Maul snarled. Ahsoka fought Maul off as much as she could, his blows growing more and more vicious. She knew she was no match for Maul like this, and knew deep in her heart that Anakin was beyond saving. Her heart was breaking all over again in the middle of a battle with the man she loved. I'm going to die. I have to tell him, she thought. I won't let him kill our child.
"I guess I was a fool to think you could change too," she retorted sadly. Maul swung at her again.
"Perhaps I had before you left," he growled bitterly.
Their sabers crashed in an 'x', their faces inches away from one another. Maul pressed his saber harder and harder down onto her, Ahsoka feeling her grip slipping. I won't die.
"That's not why I left you-" she started before Maul grew impatient, throwing her saber across the room with a powerful swing. He pinned her roughly against the wall behind her with the Force, slamming her body against the adobe brick. She shrieked as he raised his saber to her throat.
"I'll not ask again, why?" Maul gritted, the last word falling to a sob. Tears were flowing down both their faces illuminated by the light, Maul's hands trembled as Ahsoka gripped her stomach protectively. "Why did you do it?" he begged. His voice was still harsh but there was a pleading in it that broke her heart as much as his was. Ahsoka began to cry, curling into herself hesitantly. Maul watched her for a few seconds, his anger rising. As her silence continued, his patience ended.
"I hate you," Maul snarled, throwing his saber and grabbing her wrists roughly, shaking her violently. He threw her to the ground, the dark side of him wanting to kill her then and there, but he could not bring himself to do it. Because I don't hate you, I love you so fucking much it hurts.
Ahsoka's eyes widened in horror as she hit the ground. The baby, she thought worriedly. Finally she built up the courage to answer him.
"I'm pregnant," she blurted out. Maul's rage came to a screeching halt, his closed eyes opening in shock. The hut that was once filled with the sounds of yelling and sabers clashing was pindrop silent. A confused hurt look washed over Maul's stunned face.
"You're… what?" Maul asked in awe.
"Pregnant," Ahsoka added breathlessly. "Please, just leave," she begged one final time. Maul staggered backwards in a daze.
"No, that can't be…" he breathed before Ahsoka heard the undeniable thrum of a saber. Obi-Wan, she thought with horror. Maul and Obi-Wan locked eyes briefly before Ahsoka leapt into action
"No, wait!" she screamed, throwing Maul and Obi-Wan to opposite ends of the room with the Force. Maul smashed against the brick, knocking himself out completely. Obi-Wan likewise crashed to the ground, albeit a bit more gracefully than his dazed nemesis.
"Ahsoka, what in the galaxy-" Obi-Wan started before he noticed Ahsoka standing protectively over Maul's unconscious body. A few moments of confusion passed before the realization of it all hit Obi-Wan like a freight train: Maul is the father of Ahsoka's child.
"You've got to be kidding me," he exhaled.
