Five Years Later

.

In the new world people came together. It was not difficult, after all they'd been through together. Technology was gone, as was its corrupting influence. It became an agricultural society, enough land for everyone to own their own little piece of it. People mainly lived in huts with their familes, the climate was nice enough that they had no need for electricity, people built these huts mainly for excercise. There were no longer any weapons, all the swords and guns had become ploughshares. Disease had been wiped out, and the elderly became young again, got to truley enjoy this new world for awhile. Death had not returned yet. There was no crime, no poverty, no hatred. Murder, rape, theft, simply didn't occur. Racism, sexism, homophobia, no longer existed. War, slavery, genocide, were nothing but bad memories of a world that no longer existed. Perhaps the only vice was that many were not monogamous. So many had reunited with lovers that were previously deceased, monogamy just wasn't realistic. But jealousy and envy were not part of this world. Democracy flourished, president Odonnell became the first leader of this new world. He had little to do, other than pitch in and help farm like everyone else, and ofcourse prepare for the future. The economy developed as a distributist economy, people engaged in fair trade with their neighbors and noone had too much or too little. Everyone was a vegetarian, they no longer had the desire to eat other creatures. Pizza and ice cream were the biggest vices, drugs, alcohol, and tobacco were gone. People found simple pleasures, games like baseball and basketball. Football and boxing had not yet returned to the world. Some could remember the old songs enough to perform them, "Fix you" "Stand by you" were popular. The only artwork that had survived the final battle, or perhaps been resurrected by Superman, was the ancient cave painting. A woman lay dying, a snake is seen slithring away. As she dies the woman gives her newborn baby to another woman. It was fitting that this would still be around, let future generations know about these acts of kindness.

.

Things were not perfect in this new world. The new generation was being born. Noone could know if their new babies were their former loved ones. And they would always mourn for what they had lost. These children, none more than four years old, did have to be taught not to take what others had. There was the fear that theft could return to the world. And from that, who knew. That was why the older generation told stories, of the heroes and villains of the old world, and those who fought to create this better world. The man who had been the informant for the Watchers, who had gone all over time and space searching for stories, now he wrote those stories down, let the new generation know of these heroes and villains. Although Evil had been temporarily vanquished, it would return one day. Whether it brought back all the old evils of war, slavery, genocide, was unknown. Although crime didn't yet exist, president Odonnell and the Council felt the need to write laws. Laws prohibiting murder, rape, theft, abortion, discrimination. And while disease was gone, the doctors wrote new medical texts, hopefully the next generation would be prepared if disease returned. And if Evil did return, if villains chose greed and power over the common good, then there would also be heroes to fight them.
