Author's Note: Merry Christmas everyone! This is probably the longest piece of literature I have ever written. However, hey guys! SnivyLord here! Coming at you with a new chapter of Future Past. This is the second half of the apocalypse and I can promise it was definitely worth the wait because this is literally more than 20,000 words long. I'm sorry I haven't been able to update as I am getting pretty busy with life stuff, but it's nothing to worry about. You know, to be perfectly honest, this part of the apocalypse was supposed to be in the last chapter and I had to cut this part out because it was getting pretty long but you know what? It became hella long regardless of what I did even though I put the rest of it in this chapter. I hope you guys have a blast reading it because I definitely had a really fun time writing it and also pulling my hair out because of writer's block. I promise that later chapters will be just a tad bit shorter than the finale of the apocalypse since this is over 25,000 words and counting, but the plot is definitely going places. I will say that Louis will go through a transformation of sorts from a prodigious son that holds justice, kindness, and responsibility above all else into a more morally grey character as the story goes on. He is willing to do some crazy and kind of questionable stuff from now on and I hope you enjoy his and his siblings' character development as well as the parents from the past that are just introduced in this chapter. Actually, you can start to see the desperation changing Louis, just a little. However, how the Future Past begins and ends is up to you. Happy Holidays everyone!
A few days before the Future Past...
Louis and Glacies had been working and researching every alternate future they could find after their conversation with Alix. They were both currently working at their local library in their own study room since Louis could tell that the anxiety and worry were dialed up to an 11 at home because of his parents, so he couldn't work there in peace anymore, "Glacies take a look at this," Louis set down his notes and summoned several fractals that reflected the events of the Future Past. Glacies floated up to meet Louis and looked at the visions in question. The visions showed Hugo and Emma being slain by Hawkmoth after the rest of the wielders were killed. In Louis' research, he noticed that Hugo and Emma always seem to die after the other wielders, there's no alternate future whatsoever that have them die before. It made Louis' heart ache when he watched the future visions of his siblings dying, but that was why he was doing this, to save them.
"These are...the moments when your siblings die..." Glacies noted as Louis nodded grimly.
"Right, but notice the different alternate futures when they die," Louis brought the visions closer to Glacies so he could examine them and Glacies looked over them for a moment before looking at the other fractals in the room and suddenly he realized what his wielder was getting at.
"Did you notice that they die in different situations? Some of them are similar to each other, but some are completely different. It's different from the deaths of everyone else," Louis explained as he swiped a few of the visions to have them play out the Future Past. There was a scenario when Hugo and Emma died when the Chrysalis of Paradise caught them almost immediately after taking everyone else in. There was an instance where both of them survived after the Chrysalis of Paradise was used, but they were overwhelmed by Gabriel's power and killed. There were even instances where either Hugo or Emma saved Louis or each other from a particular fatal attack and they die in each other's stead. Louis noticed that everyone else died the same way in every alternate future. The chain of events that constituted the Future Past was structured so that the defeat of every miraculous wielder in Paris happens in a particular order and in a particular way.
"Yes.. it's an unstable causality. Your siblings die, but the causality for each outcome is slightly different from the other. I believe that you play a large part in changing that causality Louis," Glacies surmised as he looked the around the visions once more and he remembered that the conclusion that both of them came to when it came to the other wielders. Even though Louis could change the causality, the result was same for every other wielder. This also applied to Adrien and Marinette as well. There wasn't a future where Hugo and Emma survived their fate, but it now became clear to Louis and Glacies that their fates can be changed.
"So if that causality is unstable within the chain, then can it be broken?" Louis wondered aloud as Glacies thought about it for a moment and nodded.
"Possibly yes, if the chain is weak enough, then perhaps a big change in causality will be enough to break it... Although I am surprised that the other versions of you haven't figured this out," Glacies pondered thoughtfully as Louis swiped through a few more fractals and stopped at a specific moment in time in another universe.
"No, I did figure it out, but I just didn't do it right," Louis pointed to a vision where Glacies and himself were in an identical study room in the library discussing this exact discovery. Glacies frowned and looked between that vision and the other visions of Hugo and Emma dying. However, Glacies wasn't exactly sure what Louis was doing wrong.
"Hmm, what do you mean by that Louis?" Glacies asked.
"I can't just attempt to save Hugo and Emma by using my powers, because I know that we're all going to get overpowered by Gabriel. Something big has to happen in order to break the Chain of Causality, and I just have to figure out what it is," Louis explained, looking back at his notes and he sifted through them, trying to find a specific power of his that can somehow save Hugo and Emma. Louis had so many spells within Fimbulvetr and he hasn't even used them all yet. Surely there must be something that moves Hugo and Emma past the point in where they were supposed to die.
"Then that would mean you would have to change a condition of the event in that point in time," Glacies started as he felt the gears working in his head. The kwami was going to try to explain this in a way that it won't completely throw Louis for a loop since they are meddling with time, but the concept should be simple enough, "As you know, every alternate choice will lead to the same future in the Future Past, so before you go and think that making a different choice would still lead to Hugo and Emma's deaths, it doesn't work like that, or at least it's not that simple," Glacies explained as he whipped up a diagram made of ice in midair, snowflakes gathering together in the air to create a flow of time. Louis set his notes down and leaned his head on his hand, listening with rapt attention, "Usually, when you make an alternate choice in this timeline, the flow of fate will automatically correct itself to what the predetermined future is supposed to be, think of it as a sort of alignment. In this case, the flow of fate will try to make it so that Hugo and Emma die in the end. However, if you were to do something big and unpredictable enough to break the chain of causality, then the future will be freed. However, that does not mean that your lives are guaranteed, it just means that the future is partially back under your control. So that big and unpredictable thing that you have to do has to change a condition that allows Hugo and Emma's deaths to be averted," Glacies twirled his little arm and the timeline snapped at a particular point in time, simulating the breaking of the timeline. The scattered snowflakes then gathered again to create a new line in the diagram flowing in a different direction.
"A condition...? A condition," Louis thought aloud and looked at the vision where Hugo and Emma perished. Thinking about it for a few moments, he wrote down a list of conditions for Hugo and Emma's deaths:
Gabriel has both my mom and dad's powers
My powers aren't enough to counter Gabriel's
Hugo and Emma's powers aren't enough to counter Gabriel's
Everyone dies before Hugo, Emma, my parents, and myself
Gabriel hasn't revived Emilie as of this point in time
Both me and my parents are alive when Hugo and Emma get killed
Looking back the vision, Louis noticed how Gabriel had somehow grabbed them with appendages made of the galaxy and drained Hugo and Emma's powers and forced them to transform back. However, Louis had already tried saving them from Gabriel's attack in an alternate future and it didn't work. Consequently, there was something even more strange about the whole scene where Gabriel overwhelms the three of them. Emma is known as the Immortal Princess, meaning that while in her superhero form, she can not die. Fawkes had explained to Louis the basics of his power, and from that, Louis understood that if the miraculous should run out of power, Fawkes can easily renew his power through the means of "resurrecting" it. Gabriel did drain her power, and yet she couldn't fight back after? Perhaps it was from the physical exertion and exhaustion that prevents her from doing so. Nonetheless, Louis felt like there might have been a better way that situation could have played out. One or multiple conditions that he wrote has to change and Louis could work with that. Looking through all of them, there were only two that seemed feasible to him: the fact that Emilie had not been revived at that point, and the fact that their powers weren't enough to counter Gabriel's. Louis was sure that Hugo and Emma hadn't fully tapped into their power as miraculous wielders since they were only 10 years old. Surely, their miraculouses had a power that could bring an element of surprise.
"Hey Glacies, now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen Emma or Hugo use their one time ability. They have other powerful attacks, but they've never resorted to using their one time abilities right?" Louis asked Glacies, who nodded in agreement.
"They never had to use it because of you since your proficiency and your mastery of my miraculous was more than enough to finish the job," Glacies explained and Louis could hear a hint of pride in his voice as if he was bragging about his own wielder and Louis felt his lips quirk up into a smile.
"But what are they anyway? I don't believe Naga or Fawkes ever explained theirs to me," Louis asked and Glacies nodded and proceeded to explain.
"For Fawkes, he has two, Resurrection and Solar Corona," Glacies recalled Fawkes' abilities and Louis nodded and the kwami continued, "Resurrection gives Emma the ability to borrow the power of one of her previous incarnations and use it as her own. She will transform into the likeness of a random incarnation and be able to use the abilities and powers of that wielder," Glacies explained as Louis' eyes lit up and he honestly felt amazed that his little sister's miraculous was even capable of doing that, that she could be capable of doing that someday, "Solar Corona is a support ability that grants her allies and herself a crown of the phoenix which allows them to survive one fatal attack that would have killed them. The number of people she can empower is proportional to her physical and mental strength, so as of right now, your sister can probably only handle 3-5 people. I believe that period of immortality only lasts for 5 minutes since your sister will de-transform by that time," Glacies explained as Louis felt his smile grow wider at the prospect of his sister's abilities and overall, he just felt giddy about hearing about what his sister was capable of.
"I'm sorry, I'm just... really happy for Emm, her powers just sound so cool and I can't wait to see it in action when she does actually use it," Louis tried to cover his mouth to hide his grin and he felt hopeful, like this was something they could use to have the upper hand, "so what about Hugo?"
"Hugo's I believe is Draconification where Naga allows Hugo to change into her unbound form, the Divine Dragon, for a limited time and Hugo becomes immune to all forms of corruption," Glacies explained and Louis's mouth dropped as he let out a laugh and he just felt more awestruck by his sibling's abilities. Louis noticed that Glacies seemed to contemplating something else, as if there was something Glacies was not telling him but Louis didn't really pay it much mind since Glacies usually spent a lot of his time in his own head. Each Agreste sibling seemingly had two main abilities contrary to the single power that the previous generation had: Louis had Chronos and Ultima, Emma had Resurrection and Solar Corona, but Hugo only had Draconification since that was all Glacies had divulged about his younger brother's power.
"So he can basically turn into a giant dragon? That's so cool!" Louis exclaimed.
"Although I don't believe Hugo knows how to completely control it since it requires an incredible will to even keep one's sanity within that transformation. So I don't really know how you can use their powers to change a condition," Glacies wondered as Louis thought about it for a few moments, running a few scenarios in his head and looking at the conditions that he wrote down. The two of them were lost in thought for a few moments before Louis' eyes widened when he realized a very crucial thing he could change. However, before he could tell Glacies, the kwami poked his arm and Louis looked at him in confusion before the kwami gestured with his head towards the door to the room. Louis turned his attention towards the wall with the door and through the glass planes that separated the room from the library was a person looking at them through the door. As soon as Louis and the person made eye contact, the person fled from the scene.Louis only managed to get a short look at the person, but he noted their navy blue three piece suit and a very noticeable streak of hot pink hair and he immediately knew who it was.
"Glacies... come on," Louis asked lowly as he quickly got up from his seat and his kwami followed him out the door, "Glacies, prowl on the hunt," Louis commanded as he partially transformed his arm so he could summon Sylgr and he saw the woman trying to discreetly leave the building. Glacies didn't go into his bracelet, but rather transformed his arm on the outside so he could help Louis confront the woman, "Oh no you don't," Louis murmured as he threw his dagger forward with an icy ribbon attached to catch the person's arm and he wrapped his hand around the ribbon and pulled back so the person would turn around.
"Nathalie..." Louis said lowly as the woman used her other arm to push up her glasses and greet Louis normally as if she wasn't caught spying on Louis.
"Louis, isn't it rude to abruptly grab a lady's hand like that?" Nathalie asked as she turned to him, but Louis wasn't taking the jab.
"Isn't it rude to spy on people?" Louis fired back, not really having the patience for Nathalie, so he just cut right to the chase, "Nathalie what are you doing here? Did Gabriel send you? How did you even know I was even here?"
"I just wanted to see how your progress was coming along in preventing Gabriel's plan from coming to fruition, seeing as you can see all passages of time? Did you see something interesting?" Nathalie asked as Louis felt himself prepare to talk back, but no words came out. What could he even say? It's almost as if Nathalie already knows that every passage of time is the same, but how would she even know that? Could she know that?
"Wipe that smug look off your face, are you really that satisfied knowing that millions of people will die? My dad could be one of those people, do you really have no remorse at all?" Louis chided Nathalie, who pretended to think about that thoughtfully. It's true that despite knowing the fact that Adrien was Chat Noir, Nathalie could sympathize with Adrien's longing for their family to return back to normal. However, her desire to help Gabriel was stronger and she believed that his plan would help Adrien in the long run, "or are you too much of a suck up to care?"
"As long as Gabriel gets what he wants, I will be satisfied, after years and years of planning and preparation and being thwarted by you and your parents. His dream will be made a reality and our humiliation will be at an end," Nathalie sighed with relief as Louis felt his knuckles grow white as he gripped the ribbon tighter in his hand.
"Is it just winning and losing to you people? Does the humiliation matter that much to you? I also have a dream..." Louis looked straight and true into Nathalie's eyes, hoping that somewhere within those indifferent icy eyes was some sense of clarity. His heart hoped for that, but his mind knew better, he already knew what her answer was going to be, "That this cycle of hatred could end. And I'm going to make sure that it ends... It's gonna end with me," Louis let go of Nathalie's arm, and the woman turned to face Louis, a thoughtful look on her face. It was the kind of endearing face that smelled like subterfuge, a completely fake complacent smile.
"Oh Louis... you really do take after your father. That sunshine sense of justice is going to get you killed... very soon in fact," Nathalie smiled knowingly, an intense air surrounding the both of them as they both knew that Louis was running on borrowed time. However, Louis wasn't afraid, he would face the calamity with all of his heart. Louis had decided that his death would be of little consequence as long as his family got to live. He wasn't afraid. This is just simply what he has to do.
"I might die... but I also might live, and I know you're afraid of the possibility that I might just win, so we'll see," Louis turned to walk back into his study room to gather his research when he heard Nathalie chuckle and he could literally feel her smirk burning into the back of his head. Louis turned around to eye her warily as she let out an uncharacteristic laugh full of mirth.
"It's not a possibility, it's an impossibility, you may claim to see all passages of time, but even you can't foresee what Gabriel has in store for you. And I'm very much looking forward to it," Louis saw the evil glint in her eye as she pushed up her glasses and with a small smile, Nathalie turned and left. Louis stood there for a moment, a million thoughts racing through his head. Was there something he overlooked? Could there be something that Louis didn't consider that could doom them all?
"She's just saying that to get under your skin, she knows how diligent you are and how determined you are to stop this. Don't let her get to you," Glacies noticed the troubled look on his wielder's face and tugged on his arm to get his attention. Louis snapped out of his thoughts for a moment to look at Glacies with an apologetic smile.
"Sorry, but it is working..." Louis sighed, and after another moment, he felt another surge of anger and without giving it a second thought, Louis ran after Nathalie despite the protests of his kwami. Louis ran to the front of the library and found a rather precarious situation: his parents talking with Nathalie. Louis felt an unsettling feeling in his stomach as he noticed the semi-uncomfortable looks on his parents' faces; after all, they did know that Nathalie was actually Mayura.
"Nathalie how are you? It's been quite a while," Adrien greeted Nathalie, a cordial smile on his face that replaced his usual bright smile.
"It has, I didn't think I would run into you here, whatever are you two doing here?" Nathalie asked as Marinette eyed her warily and felt an urge to not answer her question.
"I could ask you the same thing, why is Gabriel's assistant at a local library?" Marinette asked. Adrien looked between his wife and Nathalie and he could understand why she was being cautious. If he was going to be honest, Adrien was wary of Nathalie as well. Was it a coincidence that Nathalie was at the library that Louis was also at? His son said that he would be doing some research here for the day and this was the last place he imagined Nathalie would be in the afternoon.
"Were you looking for your son here?" Nathalie deflected the question and Adrien immediately had his suspicions confirmed: she was looking for Louis. What other reason could she possibly have to show up at a local library that Louis usually frequented?
"What do you want with Louis?" Adrien asked as Nathalie feigned a look of confusion for a moment. Adrien knew that Louis has had his fair share of battles against Hawkmoth and Mayura, so Louis knew to be careful around Nathalie. However this time, Nathalie came to see him in person?
"Whatever do you mean Adrien? Do you think I have business with the boy? Has he not told you about anything at all about what's coming?" Nathalie asked Adrien, who looked slightly taken aback at the implication that his own son didn't trust him with whatever is going on. However, Adrien had a suspicion that it had something to do with the looming fact that Louis was going to die in a couple of days. With that, Adrien felt himself start to internally panic.
"I--" Adrien started to say but they heard a shout from behind Nathalie and they all turned their attention to a furious Louis.
"I've heard enough!" Louis strode right up to Nathalie and grabbed by her by the collar and walked both of them back so he could slam her into the wall. Adrien had never seen Louis look so angry, the icy look in his eyes was so reminiscent of his own father.
"Louis!" Marinette gasped as she tried to pull Louis off of Nathalie by the arm, but Louis wrenched his arm from her grasp and pressed his forearm against Nathalie's neck.
"How dare you speak about that in front of them?! How shameless can you be Nathalie?!" Louis snarled as Nathalie, who was recovering from the shock of the impact and looked incredulously at Louis. Nathalie strained against Louis as the boy pressed his forearm harder against her neck and Nathalie found it a little harder to breathe. A small crowd started to form around the altercation and the librarian was going to tell Louis and everyone to be quiet, but after seeing the position the boy was in, she decided against it.
"So you really haven't told your parents anything, are you planning on doing this completely by yourself?" Nathalie scolded Louis in a mocking manner, but Louis wasn't having it. With that, Louis shoved his forearm against her neck and caused her to gasp painfully.
"How much do you actually know about what I was doing here? I'd recommend you start talking unless you want to leave here in a body bag," Louis threatened the woman. Louis wasn't exactly sure when he wanted to tell his parents or even his siblings about the Future Past. It was obvious that whether he told them or not, it wasn't even going to matter since it was going to play out the same way regardless. However, Louis had found a tiny window to change the future and he was going to roll with it. Everyone gasped when they heard Louis' threat and Adrien stepped up to try to pull his son off of Nathalie, but he wouldn't budge.
"Louis, you're causing a scene, whatever it is, we can discuss it later," Adrien tried to convince Louis, but all Louis could see was red and it was trained on Nathalie.
"There is no 'later,'" Louis huffed, clearly frustrated as Nathalie wanted to laugh at the boy's frustration. The calm and collected miraculous prodigy was actually squirming under the uncertainties of the future, "Nathalie! Answer me! Just how much do you know from when you spied on me?!" Adrien and Marinette looked at Nathalie in shock and the atmosphere in the crowd started to shift from Louis to Nathalie.
"You want to know so badly?" Nathalie asked, looking into Louis' furious eyes and she smirked without showing a hint of fear. Louis held his forearm against her neck so firmly that it was hard for Nathalie to even talk. However, she knew Louis didn't have it in him to cross that line; to actually threaten someone with death was something that Louis was simply too kind and soft-hearted to do, "You may think that you found a way to change the fate of your siblings, but you can't change your own...you're going to die in a couple of days, and that fact will never change." Adrien and Marinette's eyes widened at Nathalie, the revelation hitting them that Nathalie also knew about Louis' secret. This made them feel unbelievably enraged, no longer having the sense pull Louis off of her.
"Nathalie, what in the world are you saying? What did you do to my son?!" Adrien demanded as Nathalie suddenly used her arms to shove Louis off of her and he stumbled backward into his dad, who caught him. Louis looked at Nathalie in shock as she straightened out her suit and looked straight at the boy in the eyes.
"I didn't do anything, if anything, you did this to him. If there's anyone to blame for Louis' death, it would be you two," Nathalie walked away from them after giving Louis a triumphant smirk and Louis grit his teeth so hard that he felt like his teeth could break. Louis looked between his parents' confused faces and Nathalie's pompous figure and felt another surge of anger shoot through him.
Louis looked at Nathalie in disbelief for a moment before scoffing, "Keep smiling Nathalie, WE"LL SEE WHO DIES FIRST!" Louis yelled at Nathalie, who didn't turn back to respond and he watched her retreating figure go out the door of the library. Louis clenched his fists and whipped around to get his stuff from the study room, but his parents stopped him.
"Louis, what in the world is going on? Is what Nathalie said true?" Adrien calmed down and turned to his son, who refused to look him in the eyes. Adrien took that as his answer and put both of his hands on his son's shoulders, rubbing them with his son soothingly, "Louis, you have to tell us how we can help you."
Louis looked between both of his parents and it took everything within him not to break down. The concerned and heartbroken looks on their faces were too much to bear and Louis was pretty sure by now that he was spiraling out of control.
"It's ok Dad, Mom. I don't think you can help me," Louis murmured absentmindedly as if he telling that to himself and suddenly Louis felt drained but the adrenaline was still pumping fire through his veins.
"Louis, if what Nathalie said was true, then this is a serious matter, how do you think we feel when we hear that our son's going to die in a few days?" Marinette asked her son as the crowd around them started to dissipate and Louis felt himself deflate slightly under his mom's gaze, knowing that he couldn't hide it from her. However, Louis had to remember that it's generally frowned upon for people to know the future, and the more people that know means the more likely the future is going to be messed up. The thing is, how much more messed up can the future possibly be? Louis didn't want to know, and it didn't even matter whether or not Louis told his parents about their fate. Louis just had to suck it up and power through it, he could do it. Louis could definitely let his own parents march to their deaths and not lose his mind trying to stop it.
"It's my problem, and I have to deal with it alone, this is the duty of a miraculous wielder of time," Louis smiled bitterly, taking another deep breath to calm down from his shaking and gave his parents the most reassuring smile that he could, even if he knew it was fake, "I can't let anyone pay for time's mistakes, if anyone has to pay the price, it should be me for failing to foresee this sooner," Louis took a deep breath and pushed himself past his parents to go back into his study room without another word. Louis knew this was harsh, it went against everything that he believed in, but he figured that ignorance was a slightly better fate than knowing the complete truth. Marinette and Adrien watched him walk away and they felt like their worst fears have been realized.
Marinette was painfully reminded of herself when she was Louis' age. She was so scared that she would have to give up everything for her role as Ladybug. That sense of responsibility was so strong that it was crippling and now her son was going through the same thing. However, something seemed even more precarious about Louis' predicament as him and Nathalie were talking about survival. At the end of the day, one of them would end up dead and that was something Marinette and Adrien never had to deal with before. No matter what happened, not even Gabriel would go that far because all he cared about was their miraculouses. However, Louis and Nathalie were aiming to kill each other, and that terrified her.
"Adrien, what Louis is up against, what he's planning on doing... he's completely prepared to give up everything for this," Marinette turned to her husband, who had a grim look on his face but it immediately softened when he heard her words. Those words made him remember her words from when they fought Gamer 2.0. Adrien felt his breath hitch and his body was wracked with an anxiety that almost made him shake where he stood. He managed to comfort her that time, but this time, Adrien couldn't even help his own son, "And I'm so scared... that he might end up just doing that," Adrien noticed her tears and her broken voice as she slowly stepped towards him and hugged him tentatively and Adrien immediately wrapped his arms around her to comfort her.
Adrien kissed her hair and brought his hand up to cradle her head, "I will never let that happen, Louis... whatever he's up against, I won't let him fall," Adrien's words made Marinette cry harder as they waited for Louis to pack up his things.
"I'm the worst son ever..." Louis muttered as he stormed back into the study room and braced himself against the table, breathing in deeply to control his shaking anger and tears. Glacies flew out of his shirt pocket to comfort his wielder by nuzzling himself against Louis' cheek, "they'll find out when it happens... and when it does... I'll just try my best."
"You can and you will, I have complete faith in you," Glacies looked at his wielder in the eyes and just for a moment, Louis felt better. Just for a moment.
During the Future Past...
"Everybody spread out! It won't be good if we're swept in one go!" Louis ordered as Gabriel attacked and everyone dashed to different positions around Gabriel. Louis looked around at every single superhero in the fight and quickly categorized everyone based on their fighting capabilities. Rena Rouge, Carapace, Pigella, and Viperion were support wielders. Ryuko, Wukong, Tigresse Pourpre, Queen Bee were offensive wielders. Pegasus and Bunnyx were portal makers, Louis thought to give them a separate category since their form of support is a little different from the others. Hugo and Emma were mixed attackers and probably the most powerful out of all of them besides Ryuko, "I can work with this..." Louis muttered to himself as he dodged an attack from Gabriel and tried to quickly devise a strategy that would somehow give them the upper hand. Then, his brain suddenly stopped him as Louis realized that all of his planning wasn't going to matter because he's already been through this before. Louis' done this before in an alternate universe and he failed. None of this was going to matter, so yet why was Louis acting as if there would be a plan that could give them the upper hand? Why was Louis hoping that they would actually win when he knows exactly how this was going to end? His comrades gave him something that Louis didn't want: hope. In that instant, Louis just felt like giving up, but then he remembered what he had discovered that day when he was researching with Glacies. He had to change a condition, Louis looked around the carnage and the powers of his fellow wielders flying everywhere and he quickly thought about the list of conditions he wrote out. This moment was mostly likely going to play out with everyone's death, including Hugo and Emma. The only things Louis could change in this moment is the powers that his siblings possessed and who was here. Right then and there, he knew what to do.
"Guys, try to hold him off for as long as you can! There's something I have to look into!" Louis told everyone as Hugo and Emma looked back at their brother as they fended against attacks from Gabriel. Everyone else nodded in understanding, not even questioning what it was he had to look into.
"Louis! Did you figure out something?!" Hugo asked his brother as Louis looked away for a second to contemplate whether he actually did or not before responding.
"It's more of a hunch than anything else, but it's pretty good hunch," Louis replied before summoning a portal with his Ultima, "I'll be right back!" Louis called out as Hugo and Emma nodded before Louis stepped into the portal and found himself inside the secret basement of the Agreste Mansion. Louis stepped forward and found himself face to face with the chamber that housed the comatose body of Emilie Agreste.
"This is the condition you wanted to change?" Louis heard Glacies' voice in his head and he nodded.
Louis stepped forward to press a button that separated the glass between him and her and her body was brought up before him. Taking a pregnant pause to consider what he was about to do, Louis brought out his hand and it glowed with a soft ice blue hue as a Niflheim sigil appeared at his hand and he could feel the frozen time of Emilie's body.
"Louis wait! Using Chronos on a human body to reverse time for just a few seconds is one thing, but you're taking back over two decades of her life! You won't be able to turn it back that far!" Glacies warned Louis as the boy rotated his wrist to start reversing Emilie's time. Louis could see her body start to glow and he heard the ticking sound of the clock as clock hands starting spilling out from the sigil and surrounding Emilie, each of them moving in sync with each other.
"That was because the first person I used it against is a literal god. This is my grandma as weird as that sounds since she looks so young," Louis' voice strained as he tried to keep his concentration up and he tried to keep track of the time he was reversing: a day, a week, a month, a few months, and suddenly keeping up the sigil was starting to get painful.
"Louis, even reversing a year for a person is unheard of, if their displacement is too far from their current point in time, the effects could be disastrous!" Glacies didn't make a move to intervene with Louis' plan, but he knew that his wielder was determined to save Emilie. He wasn't sure if awakening Emilie in the middle of the apocalypse was the same thing as saving her, but Louis had a plan. The thing about Chronos is that its area of effect is very delicate, it's difficult to control in big areas and you can't confine it to an area that is too small. There are too many things to reverse or forward in a big area and it's constricting to confine Chronos to a small area where the wielder has to steadily control the spell without letting the effects accidentally affect the things around the subject. Using Chronos with Emilie meant that Louis had to make sure that only her time was being changed and not the things around it. That alone is difficult, extremely difficult even.
Louis brought out his other hand to support the sigil to prevent it from breaking and the clock hands around Emilie started to move faster, "As long as I don't accidentally expand the range of Chronos, I can keep this up, I have to..." Louis reached a single year when he evaluated her displacement and she looked pretty much the same a year ago too. The pain was no longer building, but it was a constant and steady pain that Louis had to endure for two decades. He could sense every cell in her body work backwards, dying and regenerating and he could faintly see everything happened to her within a year, which was barely anything. Eventually the time kept ticking and he reached a point where he could see his father encountering his mother within Ephemeral and that was about 22 years ago. The pair was searing through his arms and Louis felt the sweat on his brow as he tried to push it another year or so. Louis even felt his head starting to feel heavy from the strain and Glacies could feel how far Louis was pushing himself.
"Come on!" Louis gritted his teeth and just as Emilie approached the 25th year mark, Louis saw the moment she was put six feet under. Louis saw flashes of Emilie using the peacock miraculous and there was something involving the temple in Tibet. However, he couldn't make it out clearly as Louis' head was starting to feel hazy from having so many timelines flowing through his head. Suddenly, Louis broke the Chronos and fell to his knees and after a moment of just his labored breathing, he heard another sound: the groan of someone waking up.
Glacies' voice entered his mind once again, expressing his surprise as Louis quickly hauled himself onto his feet to look at the result of the giant risk he just took, "Louis... I think you actually did it, how did you manage to do that?" Louis had no answer besides his own determination, but he could feel both of them watching Emilie in anticipation as she started to wake up. Her emerald eyes opened and Louis could see the haziness in them as if there was no memories behind them. Louis leaned closer as Emilie registered that there was a person in front of her and he could her murmur questionably.
"Who are you?" Emilie asked and Louis thought about the possible answer he could give her. Giving barely two seconds to think about it, Louis did the first thing he could do: deflect the question with a bomb.
"Do you know you've been asleep for more than 20 years?" Louis immediately ripped off the bandage, but he said it in a tone where he was trying to be careful not to set her off. It took Emilie a moment to realize what he meant before her eyes widened and she suddenly moved her hands to brace herself off of the chamber she was sleeping in.
"W-what? 20 years? I've been asleep for more than 20 years? How can that-- D-do you know my husband? His name is Gabriel Agreste," Emilie tried to explain as Louis grimaced at the name of Gabriel, which Emilie caught, "do you know him?"
Louis took a moment to look outside the glass pane window in the secret basement to eye the chaos that was happening outside before explaining to Emilie quickly, "Alright, just to make this quick, yes I do know Gabriel because your son Adrien? I am his son Louis," Louis relayed that to her and if her eyes couldn't grow any wider, they did. Emilie took in Louis as she processed his words and thought about what could have happened in 20 years.
"You're... Adrien's... son? Is that really true?" Emilie asked in disbelief. Louis looked at her for a moment before asking Glacies to de-transform him so she could see him in his civilian form. Emilie looked between the kwami and Louis and she could immediately tell the resemblance. The blond hair and the blue eyes, however something Emilie noticed about his eyes was that even though Gabriel's eyes were also a blue color, they were completely different. Gabriel from what she remembered was a stormy blue while Louis' was a beautiful bright shade of bluebell eyes. It reminded her of Gabriel from when he was younger, the resemblance was almost uncanny, "Adrien... how is he? How has he been?" Emilie asked hopefully and Louis scrutinized her for a moment before replying.
"Well, he's been fine, he grew up, started a family with 3 kids with the love of his life. He's fine but not for much longer," Louis explained with a bit of a sarcastic edge to his tone, "Dad's running out of time and so is my mom," Louis grimaced bitterly as Emilie tried to push herself off of the chamber and Louis helped her out of it, steadying her and allowing her to stand up. Emilie couldn't believe that her grandson was standing in front of her, looking so grown up and dignified. A million thoughts raced through her head as she wondered how Adrien's life was now, was he happy? Emilie took another hesitant breath before asking.
"Louis, what do you mean by that?" Emilie asked as Louis stepped away from her and he seemed to be focusing on something outside and this was the first time she realized the cacophony and tremors that were happening outside, "Wait what's going on?"
"It's your husband," Louis answered and it made a cold shiver run down Emilie's spine and he continued to explain while looking at anywhere besides her. Perhaps he just didn't want to look at Gabriel's wife in the face because she is one of the reasons why this is happening, "he's been tearing Paris apart because he wanted to steal Ladybug and Chat Noir's miraculous, and he unfortunately succeeded," Emilie gasped as she brought her hands to her mouth to cover her shock. Ladybug and Chat Noir? The ladybug and black cat miraculouses were Gabriel's? Her husband did not give up on his search after all this time?
"Are they ok? The wielders?" Emilie asked, seeing how Louis stilled for a moment at that question and it took him another moment to answer.
"Yeah, my parents are fine... for now anyway," Louis replied and the realization seeps onto Emilie's face and she couldn't believe it for a moment.
"Wait Adrien... my Adrien is Chat Noir? He's the wielder of the black cat miraculous?" Emilie confirmed with Louis nodding his head. How in the world did Adrien get involved in the world of the miraculous? When did he first meet his kwami? Emilie would have never imagined that her son would be a wielder just like her and Gabriel. Although Emilie swore that she would never fall prey to her own doubts again, she couldn't help but feel sorry when she thought about her son now. Now, her grandson was also a wielder and she could tell that he was a powerful one at that.
"Yes, or at least he was. Now Gabriel's using his miraculous and my mom's to build a new world and destroy everything in the process for your sake," Emilie could hear the bitterness in Louis' voice and she couldn't blame him. Has Gabriel really grown that desperate? Emilie knew that her husband was stubborn and dauntless in pursuit of his dreams, but even this was insane. Emilie couldn't help but feeling a crushing sense of guilt in her chest for allowing her problems to persist to this day.
Emilie steadied herself on the railing of the pathway, "We... can't let that happen, Louis, I need you to take me to him," Emilie requested as she met Louis' eyes that were widened in surprise.
"Are you sure you want to do that? Do you even have a plan on what to do when you see what your husband's become?" Louis asked, doubtful, but Emilie could tell by the way his voice shook slightly that he was desperate, hopeful that someone else other than him would have a plan. Emilie thought about it for a moment, and she could almost say with complete confidence that she was the only person who could convince him to stop.
"Perhaps, but nonetheless, I'm the only one who can stop my husband now," Louis noticed the look of determination in her eyes and he understood. Louis called for Glacies to transform him again and he turned to her to remind her of one last thing.
"Emilie, a few things that you should keep in mind is that even though I revived you, you're still in danger of returning to your previous state because time as of now is in disarray because of the Future Past," Louis noticed that Emilie was about to ask what the Future Past was referring to and he continued to explain, "The Future Past is a calamity brought about by a chain of events that occurred in the past due to the conflict between Gabriel and my parents and as a result, every single alternate future is the same. You're technically not supposed to be awake in this time and so fate will try to correct that by throwing literally anything in your way to make you fall back into a coma since there technically is no alternate future where you are awake. However since your displacement in time is before the future got sealed which I surmise happened around 15 years ago, you should be fine," Louis explained and it took a couple of moments for Emilie to get a full grasp of what he was talking about. Without waiting for a confirmation, Louis used Leiptr to summon a portal at the end of the walkway and Emilie looked past him to look at the portal in apprehension.
"Ok...? What do you think will happen when we walk through that portal?" Emilie asked and Louis narrowed his eyes at the portal and started walking towards it, only taking a look back at her to signal her to come with him.
"We either live or die, it's that simple," Louis answered and together, they walked through the portal to an absolutely ravaged battlefield. There was rubble everywhere and the atmosphere was heavy with so much pressure from the battle. Louis could see multiple wielders still fighting Gabriel, and Emilie could see what was once her husband roaring in the distance and attacking their fellow wielders. Louis saw Hugo tending to the injuries of some of the wielders that were beaten badly in the battle and two figures that Louis assumed were Emma and Ryuko zipping across the battlefield, attacking Gabriel with an intense ferocity. Louis and Emilie ran towards Hugo, who saw them and his face lit up at the sight of his brother.
"Lou! You're back!" Hugo's smile was present for only a moment before looking back at Pigella, Pegasus, and Viperion with a grim look, "Gabriel is too powerful even for us. We outnumber him, but it's clear that we're no match for him," Hugo sighed for a moment before looking at Emilie and it took him a second to realize who she was, "Louis, is this who I think it is?" Louis nodded in response to Hugo's bewildered look and Hugo looked between Louis and Emilie and shook his head in disbelief.
"You're our grand-mere aren't you? The one that Papa always talked about?" Hugo asked carefully and Emilie nodded, causing Hugo to take a slightly intake of breath out of shock and a slight bite of the lip, "you look exactly the same in the picture that Papa showed us."
"So you're Adrien's second son, it's so nice to meet you. I wish we could have met under more favorable circumstances as you two are my grandchildren," Emilie felt strange saying that word aloud since she didn't think she would see the day when Adrien would have kids of his own, but it's the reality and she couldn't be happier, "but currently as of now, we have other business to attend to," Emilie gave Hugo a weak smile and looked over the battlefield, finding the other wielders currently locked in a fierce battle with her husband.
"We need to somehow get him to stay still enough to recognize who you are, otherwise, you'll get caught in the whole mess" Hugo explained and Louis nodded to his younger brother's advice. Louis studied the wielders that were fighting for a moment and looked back towards Emilie.
"Emilie, I'll find a way to subdue Gabriel, but stay back until we know that he can't hurt you and then make yourself known to him," Louis quickly explained and Emilie nodded before he left to join the other wielders. Emilie knelt down next to Hugo to help tend to the wounds of the other wielders. Louis dug his foot into the ground and shot off toward the battlefield, leaving a swirling blizzard in his wake. Gabriel shot a cataclysmic beam towards Wukong and Carapace got in front of him.
"Shelter!" Carapace called out just as the beam hit the shield and the hero groaned as the power of the attack almost sent both of them flying.
"Dude, are you sure that shield's gonna hold?" Wukong asked worriedly as Carapace struggled to keep it up, and they both could see the shell cracking under Gabriel's power.
"Well it's not going to hold if you keep distracting me!" Carapace yelled and the beam broke through and hit Carapace's shield, sending them both flying into a pile of rubble. Emma immediately flew up while Gabriel was occupied and sent a huge blaze of fire at Gabriel, which hit and sent the god back a few feet. The god immediately turned his attention on Emma and she saw his body convulsing slightly before bunch of dark tentacle appendages shot out of his body and went straight for Emma. The girl flew back and dodged the incoming appendages, which were incredibly fast and were sharp to literally run through anybody. More of them came after her and Emma maneuvered herself expertly in midair to dodge the appendages with grace. However, she realized the tentacles had formed a tunnel around her and she was trapped within without a way out.
"Oh no!" Emma exclaimed as she noticed Gabriel at the end of the tentacle tunnel and he sent another one right at her. Emma immediately turned back and flew higher but the tentacles stretched too far for her to get out before the last one catches her. Louis saw this and felt a rush of panic wash over him, trying to reach her before the appendage catches her. Out of the corner of his eye, Louis saw Ryuko also rushing towards Emma and Louis used his lance to whip up an Ultima and attempted to slow down the attack. Ryuko saw Louis' move and immediately jumped up to save Emma. Turning herself into a stream of air, Ryuko slipped through the tentacle wall and caught up to Emma while the tentacle was struggling to break free from Louis' Ultima. Emma noticed Ryuko and before she could say anything, Ryuko touched Emma and the girl also changed into a stream of air. Quickly, Ryuko guided them out of the tentacle wall, by slipping through the other side and transformed them back into their superhero forms.
"You ok Emma?" Ryuko asked and Emma nodded.
"That was too close," Emma sighed as Gabriel retracted his appendages and they returned into his body. The two of them looked at Gabriel, who was unimpressed and before he could comment, he was immediately attacked by the other wielders. Louis looked over at pile of rubble that Carapace and Wukong crashed into and saw the two wielders getting out and stretching out their shoulders to circulate out the pain. Louis breathed a sigh of relief knowing that they were ok and looked back towards Gabriel.
"Guys, we have to find a way to subdue Gabriel long enough to get Emilie to him," Louis explained and everyone who was near him looked at him in shock, registering the request in their heads. Wasn't Emilie supposed to be in a coma?
"Louis, what do you mean by that?" Carapace ran up to Louis and the boy gestured over to where Hugo and Emilie was and their eyes widened at the woman they saw. Everyone who was close to Adrien knew what Emilie looked like, and they also knew that Gabriel was trying to revive her for the longest time.
"Remember the hunch that I had earlier? That was it," Louis answered and everyone was silent before Louis continued to explain, "We have to work together to get Gabriel to stop long enough for him to recognize his wife. Maybe then... something will change," Louis hoped as he looked at his other fellow wielders and they nodded before charging back into battle. They understood his gambit, and they knew it was a long shot that Gabriel would stop at the sight of Emilie, but everyone trusted Louis. Before he could join them in the fight, Louis felt another presence beside him and he turned to his head to find Bunnyx looking between him and Emilie.
"I've looked through countless futures and this is certainly new. Was this your plan?" Bunnyx asked and Louis heard a hint of hope in her unsure voice that was masked by her confident persona. Louis narrowed his eyes at Gabriel and sighed before tightening his grip on his lance.
"Here's hoping," Louis simply said before he charged into battle alongside Bunnyx and continued the fight against Gabriel. Meanwhile, Hugo and Emilie had finished healing Pigella, Pegasus, and Viperion and they all thanked them for their help. Suddenly, they heard a screeching and they all looked in the direction of the sound to find that two other figures that were consumed by the power of creation and destruction had also joined the fray.
"That's Madame Nathalie and Lila!" Hugo exclaimed as Emilie looked at her former assistant in despair. She was someone that Emilie no longer recognized and yet she could still see her familiar figure despite the drastic change. Just how much had changed when she was asleep? Emilie looked around at all the destruction and the dark crimson sky and it suddenly hit her that this was not what she wanted to wake up to at all. She was swept into the flow of things and everything happened so fast that Emilie didn't realize that all of this happened because she was gone for so long. The other heroes had entered back into the fray to aid their fellow heroes, but Hugo stayed behind to guard Emilie. Another a few more moments of a fierce battle, Hugo and Emilie heard a voice call out from behind them. Hugo felt his heart drop because he recognized the voice and he turned around to find his parents running towards him.
"Maman, Papa, what are you guys doing here!?" Hugo exclaimed as Adrien and Marinette caught up to him and Adrien hugged him tight.
"Hugo, thank god you're ok, are you hurt anywhere?" Adrien asked, understandably ignoring the woman who was next to his son and checking his son for injuries. Hugo nodded and hugged his dad back, nuzzling into the crook of his dad's shoulder.
"Yeah I'm fine, everyone's still fighting Mister Gabriel though, I don't know how long they can hold him off," Hugo looked back towards the pandemonium of abilities, attacks, and explosions and Adrien finally noticed the woman that was staring at him for the longest time. They held each other's gazes, emerald to emerald eyes and Adrien blinked to make sure that he wasn't dreaming.
"Mom? Is that really you?" Adrien asked carefully and Emilie could feel herself tearing up at how grown up her son was. It felt just like yesterday when Emilie had taken a picture of them on one of their days out with his signature open white polo and the black t-shirt with the neon stripes. It was just yesterday when Adrien had spent a day with her on set for one of her movies that he never got to see until much later because she had disappeared. It was... just yesterday that Emilie had sang a song with Adrien that she and Adrien wrote together on the piano. It was just yesterday...
"Adrien... you're all grown up," Emilie held her hand up to her mouth to cover her sobs and ran forward to hug him. Adrien was shocked at first and didn't return the hug, but he slowly reciprocated it. Marinette watched the reunion between the two Agrestes with sympathetic eyes before turning to the battlefield and noticing Louis and Emma lead the charge against Gabriel. She watched as the two siblings adeptly dodged all of Gabriel's attacks, seamlessly weaving past and through the beams that Gabriel kept sending their way. Louis and Emma dodged another attack from Gabriel and jumped up on opposite sides of Gabriel with both of their weapons shining with a powerful glow.
"Levarza's Aspect: Renaissance Flame!" Emma called out and a loud screeching of a phoenix could be heard from her scepter and a brilliant flame emerged in the shape of grand and voluminous wings before combining into a grand flame above the sorceress.
"Gylfi's Aspect: Élivágar!" Louis called out at the same time and suddenly, streams of ice poured from the gem on his lance and a total of eleven streams could be seen congregating and swirling around Louis as if they were waiting for his command. Louis looked towards Emma and nodded, which his younger sister understood and she attacked first. Emma lunged forward with her specter and thrust her hand forward, causing the scepter to spin and blast out the flames towards Gabriel, who moved to dodge to the side, however Ryuko was there to corral him back towards the flames. Gabriel glowered at Ryuko and intended to plow right through her as Ryuko thrust her lightning empowered sword at Gabriel.
"Shelter!" Carapace leapt up beside Ryuko and shielded her right as Gabriel slammed against the shelter shield and he was pushed back towards Emma's flames and in a brilliant blaze, Gabriel was swallowed up by Emma's attack. Carapace and Ryuko backed off as Gabriel attempted to dispel the flames with his power, but the flames wouldn't die out.
"WHAT IS THIS?! THESE FLAMES!" Gabriel could feel the searing burn penetrating through the universe itself and he tried to fight off the flames. However, before he could, Louis pointed his lance outwards and whispered to the almost sentient streams of ice billowing forth from his weapon.
"Don't let him recover from the flames," Louis whispered and the the streams automatically extended and snaked their way towards Gabriel at an alarming speed. Louis knew that the flames of Levarza, the Immortal Phoenix, were essentially well... immortal, they can't die out no matter what the opponent does. However, Louis knew that Gabriel would somehow find a way to defy the laws of nature regardless, so he summoned the rivers of Niflheim as a safety measure. Gabriel noticed the rivers of ice were coming for him and he flew up higher despite the flames in his attempt to dodge the streams. In an attempt to mess him up, the other wielders leapt up after Louis' attack to help Louis catch him. Tigresse Pourpre rushed up, riding on top of one of Louis' streams of ice and aimed a punch right at Gabriel, who shook off the burn for a moment to collide their fists, generating a huge shockwave throughout the area. Marinette, Adrien, Hugo, and Emilie braced for impact as the shockwave shook the ground and caught them all off guard. Wukong rode on top one of the other streams and used his giant extendable staff to catch Gabriel off guard and knocked him with the end of the staff into one of Louis' rivers of ice. Louis immediately commanded the rivers to envelop themselves around Gabriel and restrain him and Gabriel struggled as the burning yet soothing sensation of the rivers deterred his struggles. Hugo could still see Gabriel struggling and he ran up to the battlefield and summoned large tree roots from the ground to tangle themselves around Gabriel and restrain him even further. Gabriel could feel the combination of all three siblings' powers and it was overwhelming: the flames, the floods of ice, and the choking binds of the trees were actually overpowering his powers of creation and destruction. To think that these mere children are privileged to such power angered Gabriel since Adrien and Marinette had beaten him for years and now their children were taking up the mantle. Now, all he had to do was prove that taking the mantle is essentially a death wish.
"Emilie! Please! Bring him to his senses!" Louis shouted, the three of them struggled to keep him down and Emilie steeled herself before running into the battlefield. Before she could run though, she felt an hand on her arm and she turned around to see Adrien with a worried look on his face.
"Mom, I know you must have woken up recently, but please be careful, this is... beyond any of our control," Adrien warned Emilie, who nodded in understanding, but she pursed her lips slightly in resolve. She knew she was the only person who had the hope of stopping her husband form making things worse.
"I know, but on the contrary, perhaps everything seems too much in control , and we need to let go of that illusion now, starting with Gabriel," Emilie pulled her hand away from her son's and walked up straight up to Gabriel, every step seeming to increase in gravity. The pressure from having all the powers of the miraculous wielders was heightened to such a degree that any normal human being would have just collapsed to the floor from the weight. However Emilie kept pressing on until she came face to face with her dear husband. Gabriel barely registered her for a moment before looking closer at who was in front of him and a mix of relief and shock swept through his whole body. Emilie could barely tell the change in expression as her husband was barely recognizable and the only sign she saw was the widening of the bright golden pupils of his.
"E-Emilie? My darling... queen... is that really you? This... this must be a trick, I haven't done all I needed to do... to ensure a perfect world for us, our family..." Emilie noticed the forlorn look in Gabriel's eyes despite all the chaos and she felt like she could empathize with that somehow.
"It really is me darling, but what is all this? What is that perfect world you dreamt of? Is it really all of this?" Emilie asked, never breaking her eye contact with her husband. It has been a long time that Adrien had ever seen his father interact like this with his mother, it was so nostalgic, but it was also encumbering to know that nothing in their family had changed.
"No, my love, it isn't, I haven't used my wish to create a perfect world for us, with you as my queen. I first have to get rid of everything that is wrong with the old world," Gabriel said, almost in a pleading tone as if he was asking Emilie to forgive his tardiness or his lack of competence. Emilie sighed and shook her head slowly, hanging her head slightly. It was as if Gabriel had just noticed everything that was restricting and hurting him, starting with Louis, who was still trying to restrain him.
"Please forgive me... for coming back too late, it must have been so hard on you and Adrien, suffering alone all these years..." Emilie started to apologize but she looked at Adrien and Marinette before turning her gaze on the three children who were working together to restrain Gabriel. Adrien, despite all the loneliness and suffering, had managed to move on and find things in life that were more important than blood. He had found love, a family, a legacy, and a path to walk with the new people he holds dear in life. That's all Emilie could ever want for him, but what was Gabriel was trying to create was a perfectly crafted plan in his image for how life would play out, "But Adrien... has found the light in the darkness that once was. Gabriel, must you really insist on continuing? I'm back now and we can all work together to find a way to heal and move forward. Isn't that all that matters?" Emilie asked and it was silent for a moment as everyone around them was waiting with bated breath, awaiting an answer. Gabriel was silent for a few moments and finally, he spoke, his voice weaker than before.
"As I wield... both powers of creation and destruction, I can see... the fate's design and how my world... is destined to be. My... perfect world. The son that you see now... our son, is not the one we know and love Emilie. We must fix how our fates were decided all those years ago... and make it right," Gabriel replied and Louis felt a chilling feeling run through his bones. He had such a bad feeling about this, Louis knew it wouldn't be this easy.
"Father, what do you mean? Am I supposed to grow and be molded to every single whim of yours? I've done that for half of my life and look where that's gotten me. I didn't have friends before, I didn't have anyone to love before! Father how is that fair?!" Adrien called out, stepping up beside Emilie, who looked at her son in pity and nodded with his words. Louis finally noticed his parents within the vicinity and he felt a hot rush of anger course through him as his efforts to keep them away from here were in vain.
"Our lives were supposed to be different than this... having this power... I can see that the Adrien you were meant to be is out there in the cosmos somewhere... but that can't happen unless the world is corrected in my image. Our lives Emilie were supposed to be better than this!!" Gabriel hissed and Louis felt himself scoff at Gabriel's preaching and decided to put in his two cents.
"Where's the fun in being a father, if you know exactly how your child is going to turn out? It's not only dull, but it's insulting to the child knowing that any other possibility is meaningless in your eyes," Louis huffed with Adrien looking past Gabriel to make eye contact with his son. His eyes were gleaming with pride and admiration for how wise his son is. Adrien found it was amazing how much Louis understood him and how he felt about their family or at least about his father's side. Louis had his own fair share of expectations he had to meet, but he had no problem rising up to the challenge and he continues to do so constantly.
"I... I will make this right, even if it means I have to kill all of you do it!" Gabriel roared as his body started to glow dangerously again and the trio could feel him start to easily break through all of their restraints like a knife through butter. Louis noticed a shining purple light in the distance coming from the Eiffel Tower and it was steadily getting closer with each coming second.
"What is that?" Emma asked and when it got closer Louis realized what it was and he felt his entire body get chilled to the bone with what was coming. The Chrysalis floated in the air and pulsed with a dangerous purple glow as if it were preparing to open. This was the moment when Louis would ultimately fail and this was when the future had to be changed no matter the cost.
Louis turned back to the crowd of people that were surrounding Gabriel and felt a wave of panic wash over him, "EVERYBODY GET AWAY FROM HERE NOW!" Louis ordered, his voice bordering on a scream as he used one hand to summon a mighty gust of wind to get Emma and Hugo off of Gabriel. The twins yelped as they were thrown off of Gabriel and Louis guided the blustery winds to carry the twins to Adrien and Marinette. Louis kept his rivers of Niflheim wrapped around Gabriel as long as he could knowing that the decreased pressure gave Gabriel enough reprieve to break free.
"You think that's enough to stop me? DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH!" Gabriel roared as Louis used the rivers to launch him forcefully backwards to create as much distance between them and Gabriel. Louis didn't know how much more anxiety he could take, it really did feel like it was going to kill him without Gabriel doing a thing. Louis looked back at all his comrades and soaked in all the looks on their faces, each one wrought with fear, shock, and apprehension. The boy quickly looked back at the god in question and noticed he was preparing for an attack. Gabriel concentrated his power on the Chrysalis and a mass of dark energy made of butterflies appeared above Gabriel. The mass then grew appendages and looked as if it were human. When the dark shadow over the mass faded, Adrien, Marinette, and Louis' eyes widened as they recognized the person that Gabriel had created.
"Isn't that... Ephemeral?" Marinette whispered harshly and Adrien could do nothing but nod since that thing was his akuma. The familiar purple figure with the glowing lavender mask stood above Gabriel and Louis paled as he realized what the man was going to do.
"He can create akumas without needing the person? That's... how..." Adrien breathed out and Louis saw his parents stalling behind to watch as the other wielders who were also running noticed that they were lagging and Louis felt that familiar desperation again.
"IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW! JUST PLEASE GET OUT OF HERE! I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU NOT TO COME BACK HERE!" Louis barked at his parents and he saw Gabriel preparing to use Ephemeral for the first phase of his attack. Louis floated up to meet Gabriel and lunged forward to attack Ephemeral first but Gabriel countered back with a cosmic barrier that blocked Louis' attack on Ephemeral, the akuma not even batting an eyelash (if he even had any...).
"Louis!" Hugo and Emma called out as Louis found his lance stuck within the cosmic barrier that Gabriel made and Louis made an attempt to reverse time with Chronos but Gabriel immediately constricted the space around Louis to choke him. Louis winced in pain as the rivers streaming from his lance immediately retreated to surround Louis to cushion the constriction.
"You're first Louis," Gabriel sneered as Ephemeral raised his hand and Louis couldn't find a way to escape from the grip of the universe. Ephemeral sent a wave of his power coursing through Louis and he felt the beeping on the brooch that help his cape together. Each branch of the snowflake was fading until he was transformed back into his civilian form, the brooch transforming back into his bracelet. Marinette and Adrien stared in horror as Louis was helplessly held in the grip of Gabriel Agreste. Ryuko, Carapace, Rena Rouge, Queen Bee, and the other wielders started to double back towards him with the intention to help but Louis saw through this.
"NO! Please don't come any closer! I'm begging you," Louis ordered, his request bordering on a plea. Louis noticed that the events of the future had already been changed slightly, but he wasn't sure if this was where he was destined to die. Emilie was here and that had already changed the events of the future drastically, but who knows how long Louis had before Fate realigned itself with the Future Past. However, the one thing that Louis does know is that the chain of causality has been significantly weakened and possibilities were starting to seep out into the universe again. Glacies floated besides Louis' head as Gabriel held him in mid air, relishing in the fact that he has won, "Glacies, can you not transform right now?"
"Unfortunately I can not, Ephemeral disabled my power, so it'll be some time before I can transform you again, but I can still help you," Glacies reassured Louis as Gabriel readied his power to kill Louis. Louis tried struggling but it was utterly useless.
"Catacy-" Gabriel started to say but Glacies cut him off by putting his tiny paws together and calling out his own power.
"Ultima!" Glacies called out and a giant blizzard whirled through the area, slowing down both Gabriel and Ephemeral. Glacies summoned rugged gale of ice that sent Ephemeral flying, but before he could get to Gabriel, the god was beginning to break free and Gabriel managed to regain enough control to attack Louis. Glacies quickly placed himself in front of Gabriel's attack and countered back with his own attack. Their two powers clashed and it became too bright for Louis to even see. Soon, the clash exploded with the powers of creation, time, and destruction warping the area around them in a devastating wave. Everybody took cover from the explosion and Louis and Glacies were sent flying in the immediate aftermath. Hugo and Emma coughed and quickly noticed their incapacitated brother and ran up from their cover to catch him and Glacies in midair.
"Louis! Oh my god, are you ok?" Hugo asked, looking at his brother's unconscious body for a moment before Louis coughed suddenly and groaned as he slowly waked again. Emma breathed a sigh of relief and looked back up at the looming figure of Gabriel.
Gabriel raised his hand and concentrated his power for another devastating attack and Emma instinctively moved in front of Louis and Hugo to protect them. They all saw the Chrysalis glowing brighter with a dangerous aura and Louis just wanted to shrivel up and die there. He knew what was coming. Everyone was together and Louis didn't have the power to stop it. Louis looked down at Glacies who he caught in his hands and saw that he was still recovering from that attack earlier. Ephemeral floated up to the Chrysalis of Paradise and everyone saw his figure fill with a malicious power.
"His power is getting amplified by the Chrysalis..." Louis groaned as he tried to stand up, his siblings helping him to his feet. Louis looked back and saw all of his other wielders preparing for the attack, ready to protect the three of them. It felt like that no matter what Louis said, they all had a natural instinct to leave no one behind, and Louis cursed that. It also didn't help that Adrien, Marinette, and Emilie were also still there.
"What's going to happen?" Emma held onto Louis tight as the older boy sighed and his eyes flickered to the ground before looking at Ephemeral again.
"Most likely, we're all going to lose our powers, and we're all going to die here," Louis grit his teeth and Emma and Hugo looked at each in other in despair before coming to an unsaid decision and they both stepped forward to face Ephemeral and Gabriel, "What.. what are you guys doing?" Louis asked as he noticed that they were concentrating their power. There was an overwhelming amount of heat coming from the two of them as their miraculouses shone with a brilliance Louis and never seen before.
"Fawkes are you sure this will work?" Emma asked her kwami, the phoenix kwami speaking in her mind.
"You only have enough power for one burst, the effects of Ephemeral are starting to seep into the other miraculouses. It's only a matter of time before Ephemeral de-transforms you all in one go!" Fawkes warned and Emma nodded before calling out her power. The flames that were emanating from her were starting to wrap around her in a furious vortex. Gabriel narrowed his eyes at this new development and ordered Ephemeral to shut her down.
"Resurrection! Ardent Empress Agnia!" Emma called out and she was completely enveloped in the flames for a few moments before reappearing amidst the ashes a completely different person. Emma had lost her mage cloak and her dress turned into a gold chest plate with a long crimson waistcoat that flowed out behind her. There were crimson drapes wrapped around her shoulders and she wore a crimson spartan helmet that was adorned with beautiful phoenix wings, shining with a red and orange brilliance. Floating behind her was a giant golden ornament that looked like the sun. Emma held out her hand as the staff she once used glowed a bright orange color and transformed into a double sided glaive that flared to life with a fire that seemed to never die. Louis, Adrien, and Marinette watched in shock as Emma breathed in and out to get used to her newfound power. Next to Emma, Hugo was wrapped in a soothing vortex of iridescent green fire and Louis saw him transforming right in front of his eyes.
"Naga! Draconification!" Hugo called out and his hands started to grow dragon scales and his entire superhero form began to turn from the navy blue into an iridescent green, white, and a deep aquamarine blue. Louis noticed that light green dragon wings were sprouting beneath Hugo's cape and aquamarine and green horns sprouting from his head. A bright green dragon tail also sprouted from his body and Louis noticed the plants that were growing at the tip. His blueberry hair had turned into that fiery green and Glacies narrowed his eyes when the transformation stopped there.
"Hmm... So he can't complete it after all," Glacies noticed and Louis looked at his kwami for answers.
"What... what do you mean?" Louis asked and Glacies pointed at Hugo's body which was still humanoid.
"This form of his is only a half transformation. Given the fact that he is still half human means that he doesn't have the mental fortitude to complete the entire transformation. Turning into a dragon is most likely too much for someone as young as Hugo to handle," Glacies explained as the twins readied their weapons and before Gabriel could react, Emma flew up to them at such an incredible speed it almost seemed like she teleported. Gripping her glaive tightly, Emma slashed up at Ephemeral to prevent him from attacking anyone else. Ephemeral screamed out in pain as Emma's glaive ripped through him and Louis could see the akumas that made up Ephemeral being burned to ashes. Marinette and Adrien gasped as Emma incinerated Ephemeral without breaking a sweat and Gabriel immediately lunged forward to grab her. Emma immediately disappeared as Gabriel's hand barely made contact with the soft feathers of the phoenix. Gabriel then saw a green flash out of the corner of his eye and saw Hugo flying up to him at an incredible speed. The god scoffed under his breath and aimed a punch right at Hugo just as Hugo attacked with his own punch, their fists colliding in midair. Everyone braced themselves for the energy shockwave that pulsed from their clash, sending rock and debris up into the air.
"The power of the Divine Dragon? Do you think that will be enough?" Gabriel sneered at Hugo while the boy grit his teeth at the god. Suddenly, Gabriel opened his palm and Hugo recoiled in shock as the force of the universe started to crush him.
"Aaaah!" Hugo gasped out in pain and right before Gabriel could go any further, a bright crimson flash appeared from the right and Gabriel saw Emma flying in like a bullet with the glaive spinning furiously in her hand. Using his other free hand, Gabriel used his arm to block Emma's attack, but the blade seemed to be almost burning through the protection of creation and destruction. Hugo felt the universe's hold weaken over him and he summoned another surge of power through him to resist Gabriel's hold.
"Searing Commandment: Harmonia!" Emma called out as the ruby gem on the blade started to glow and Gabriel felt a rush of adrenaline course through him as he sensed the blade's dangerous intent. It had almost started to sear through his arm before Gabriel quickly used the atmospheric pressure to thrust both of them back. The twins yelped out in surprise as Gabriel raised the affected arm to his eye to examine the damage. It took a few seconds, but the swirling energy of creation and destruction started to healed the searing laceration in his arm.
"Tch... I admit, that power of yours is dangerous," Gabriel acknowledged the girl's power. To think that the girl would be able to summon the power of the first wielder of the Phoenix miraculous. Perhaps he had underestimated her because she would have cut clean through his arm if Gabriel had waited just a second longer.
Marinette and Adrien marveled at their daughter's power and strength, the warm and commanding aura emanating off of her in waves. Emma tilted her glaive up and pointed it at Gabriel threateningly, "It's our turn to protect everyone now, although..." Emma looked closely at her glaive and saw the slight flicker of the flames, signifying her limited time in this form. Hugo flapped his wings to fly above Gabriel and puffed up his chest to build up his dragon's fire, the dragon scales on his body glowing in response. Hugo then brought his hand up to his lips and blew forward, setting forth a great blaze of fire from his mouth. Gabriel brandished his hand out and emanated a cataclysmic wave that countered against the fire. The cataclysmic wave broke through the fire and headed straight for Hugo, who dodged it.
"World Tree's Creation: Drevas!" Hugo put away his sword and held both his hands above his head and a bright swirling green energy started to gather in Hugo's hand. Louis saw something started to form in the palms of Hugo's hand and Hugo closed his eyes to concentrate on his power. Gabriel narrowed his eyes at Hugo, realizing the potential threat if he let him continue and flew up to disrupt the boy. Emma immediately reacted and flew up in a flash to counter Gabriel with her glaive and the god immediately disconnected to attack Hugo again from a different angle, but Emma intercepted him at every attempt.
"Damn you!" Gabriel roared as he concentrated his power to obliterate both twins in one shot. Louis felt the ground raise up beneath him and he could see the rocks and debris floating in response to Gabriel's power. It was akin to the "hairs on Earth's neck raising" at the sheer concentration of cosmic power in one place.
"Hugo! Emma!" Louis called out, noticing the danger of being within Gabriel's vicinity.
"Searing Commandment: Havette," Emma called out in response to Gabriel's show in power and the crimson gem in the middle of the giant sun ornament behind her began to glow and the gems on her glaive began to glow as well. Gabriel disregarded the girl's attempt to stop him and shot himself at Hugo with Emma ready to intercept his attack. Emma held out her glaive horizontally in front of her just as Gabriel made contact with her and it was like Emma was swallowed up by the sun. Suddenly, a fiery sphere of light reminiscent of the sun enveloped her but it was transparent with Emma still visible inside. Emma loosened her grip on her glaive, just merely holding it with her thumbs against her palm, her hands moving to an open palm position. Then, the sphere began to condense and the mini solar flares that were coming out of the sphere redirected themselves to Gabriel's hand. Gabriel tried to pull his hand out of the sphere but the solar flares were ensnaring him and slowing making their way around his body.
"Your tricks won't work on me!" Gabriel tried to use Cataclysm to destroy the solar flares but Emma was like a never ending well of energy and the power of the sun kept shining. Hugo opened his eyes at that moment and gracefully pulled on the air with his hands with the swirling energy mass following his gestures. It was almost as if he were pulling the weapon out of midair. Everyone saw the energy mass turn into something reminiscent of a weapon and the glow died a bit in order to reveal the weapon Hugo had created. It resembled a pike, and the blade was a glowing light green. The hilt was donned with golden spikes and running all over the pike was roots and branches were growing wildly. The pike stopped floating midair and settled into Hugo's hand and the draconic appendages responded in kind to the divine power of the pike in his hands.
"Emm, I'm going to need you to keep him in place," Hugo called out as Gabriel looked at the pike and its pulsing green light as if it were actually alive. Emma nodded and gripped her glaive tightly again causing the solar flares that were holding Gabriel to erupt like a volcano and it was like a flower made of solar flares had bloomed in the sky. Everyone heard Gabriel's roar of pain as they braced themselves for the unbearable increase in heat. Louis felt himself just getting dizzy from the possibility of heatstroke and looking at his parents, he knew that they felt the same. The solar flares grew larger and they scaled up to what real solar flare would look like if it were up close. A real one might have been a 100 times larger, but seeing the increase in size at such a close proximity, it barely made a difference.
"I... will not be felled by two children!" Gabriel struggled in the overwhelming force of the solar flares and Emma noticed her timer counting down to three minutes and called back to her brother.
"Hugo! Do it now!" Emma pleaded with Hugo and the boy nodded and cocked his arm back with the pike before throwing it like how one would shoot an arrow. The pike shot straight and true and there was no way that Gabriel could avoid it. Gabriel tried to concentrate the power of destruction on his body to destroy the pike on contact, but it didn't do a thing. Gabriel screamed in pain as the pike ripped through him and the force of the strike ripped him from the grip of the solar flares. Gabriel was launched into the rubble with a resounding boom that sent a wave of wind and dust whooshing past everyone. Groaning in pain, Gabriel tried to pull the pike out of him but the roots and vines started to move as if they had a mind of their own and they started embedding themselves into Gabriel's body. It was almost they were sucking the life out of him and Gabriel noticed the galactic sheen that was covering his body started to swirl around the roots.
"This is..." Gabriel started but he didn't get the chance to finish his sentence as he felt the powers of creation and destruction weakening in his body. Louis helped himself to his feet and felt two pairs of arms support him as he looked to his left and right to find his parents looking worriedly at him.
"Louis are you ok?" Adrien asked as his son nodded and chuckled to himself slightly, reveling in the irony of feeling his dad and mom's presence once again.
"I really can't make you stay away from me can I?" Louis bit his lip as his body became riddled with anxiety. He knows that the future has changed somewhat, but how much has it changed? The conditions for both of their deaths were being met, and yet Louis didn't know when the moment was coming. Hugo and Emma exhibiting this level of power is completely out of left field and Louis no longer knew what to think.
"Louis, has the future been changed yet?" Marinette asked pensively as Louis took a moment to look behind him at all the apprehensive miraculous wielders that were still trying to debate on whether to help the twins or run away.
"Honestly, I don't know, it's honestly a miracle that I'm still alive," Louis murmured and looked up at the backs of his twin siblings, both of them looking so powerful and regal in their own right. He couldn't be prouder, but yet sadder since Louis was practically no help to them now.
"What are you doing to me!? Are you... sealing my power?" Gabriel stood up on his feet and tried to rip the pike out of his body, but the pike was too deeply rooted within his body.
"Not only is it sealing your power, but it's also sucking away your life force as we speak," Hugo answered for him and everyone's eyes widened in shock at the new information. Gabriel grit his teeth and looked down at the pike that was draining his out his power and his life force. The god then looked back into the blueberry haired boy's eyes and saw the sharp ruthlessness of a dragon in his emerald eyes. To think that the boy had a technique like this up his sleeve, this kind of power alone would have surpassed any of the previous generation back in their heyday. Hugo flew down suddenly and gripped the handle of the pike before Gabriel could fight back and pushed it further into Gabriel's body, an unsettling pain rising in magnitude coursing through Gabriel's body. The power of creation's capability to create new cells and regenerate was decreasing and the pain was only getting worse as Hugo ruthlessly pushed the pike further into Gabriel. The galactic sheen was starting to disappear and everyone could barely see the face of Hawkmoth again. However, the ladybug earrings were still nowhere to be seen. Emma watched in horror but made no moves to interrupt as Hugo didn't showed no signs of stopping and Gabriel struggled and fought against Hugo's insistent torture.
"Do you really think you have it in you to kill me? You're a child!" Gabriel tried to goad Hugo out of killing him but the boy didn't seem to care, using the bade of his palm to push the pike further into the man.
"Gabriel you should have known that if Maman and Papa couldn't kill you, we would!" Hugo referred to himself, Emma, and Louis as the parents looked pensively at Hugo, knowing that a part of the frustrations of their children were starting to come to light. Gabriel grit his teeth and glanced the Chrysalis of Paradise out of the corner of his eye and knew what he had to do. Louis noticed Gabriel started to concentrate whatever he had left into his forehead and a small golden light could be seen forming. Emma noticed from above all of the blood that was spilling out from Gabriel as well and how the roots and vines seemed to be absorbing it as well.
"I... have a bad feeling about this," Louis felt a chill run down his spine and noticed Gabriel was concentrating his power in his forehead for some kind of attack even though a lot of his power was getting sealed by the pike Drevas. However, it was enough for Louis to sense the danger and luckily, Emma sensed it as well.
"Hugo watch out! The light in his forehead! He's concentrating a great amount of cosmic energy there!" Emma called out as Hugo looked at the swirling cosmos that was forming in Gabriel's forehead and the man smirked and suddenly gripped the boy in his position to keep him from leaving. Louis felt a wave of cold blood wash over him as he pulled himself from his parents' support and ran towards Hugo.
"Hugo! No!" Louis called out as Hugo tried to pull away from Gabriel but the god wouldn't let him and Emma flew down frantically to try to release them from each other. Gabriel then used his cosmic binding appendages to grip Hugo in place as Louis came to pull Hugo away from him. However, this was all part of his plan as he now had all three Agreste children within close proximity. Adrien and Marinette realized the danger of what they were doing as well and called out desperately as all the heroes rushed back into tried to stop Gabriel, but it was too late.
"Louis! Hugo! Emma! NOOOO!" Marinette screamed and Adrien and Emilie could only look helplessly as the three of them noticed the glowing cosmos on Gabriel's forehead turned into a vertical ellipse that almost seemed like a third eye. Hugo noticed that even though Gabriel had enough power to concentrate his power, it was still severely weakened by Drevas. However, that didn't stop the man from casting it.
"I open the third eye of creation and destruction. Come forth! GENESIS!" Gabriel called out and the last thing that everyone could see was a bright flash of lavender and golden light that imploded into a dome of the cosmos and the universe beyond. It rendered the space of the earth and air around them and the family felt themselves being pulled back by the other miraculous wielders to avoid being caught in the explosion. Carapace leapt in front of the group and brought out his shield to shelter everyone from the blast. Everyone looked in horror as the blast completely enveloped the shield and Carapace struggled to keep it up. Purple and crimson lightning lit up the sky, the earth was trembling, and entire neighborhoods were either falling into the abyss or sent flying into the air. Surprisingly, Carapace managed to protect everyone and no one was harmed. When the dust finally cleared, Marinette and Adrien looked at the place where their children were and found that they were all lying unconscious on the floor with the twins being de-transformed.
"Oh no... Adrien... our kids... they're..." Marinette's voice broke as Adrien steadied his breathing and looked past their kids to look at Gabriel, who slowly rose from the ground. Adrien couldn't anything but run to his children with his wife following behind and he immediately knelt beside them to check up on them, "Hugo! Emma! Please speak to me!" Marinette cradled the unconscious bodies of the twins in her arms. They were still breathing but it was weak and how Louis managed to get through that relatively unscathed was completely unknown to any of them.
"Louis, are you ok? Please look at me," Adrien pleaded with his son, whose eyes were barely open and his pupils moved slightly to register his dad in his vision. Adrien looked at his other children, who lay battered and beaten and he could feel a rage build up within him that seldom arises.
"Hmph, his siblings protected him from the full brunt of my attack despite me being hindered by Hugo," Gabriel dusted off his stomach as if that pike was a minor inconvenience and summoned his Chrysalis of Paradise once again. The Chrysalis glowed dangerously and Emilie ran up to her son's side, refusing to leave his side.
"Gabriel please stop this! You're hurting your own family! Your own flesh and blood! Doesn't that mean anything to you?" Emilie pleaded with Gabriel, whose eyes immediately softened at the sound of his wife's voice but it wasn't enough.
"With the power of creation... flesh and blood can be rendered anew and I will have our future created in my perfect image... Emilie, it is time..." Gabriel murmured as the Chrysalis opened and clawed tentacles and antennae burst out of the openings and thrashed around threateningly. Louis felt himself snap awake due to the bone chilling sense of dread that washed over him and he looked at the Chrysalis in fear. Adrien noticed his son's sudden alert and it was just a feeling in his gut that the time was nearing for Louis' end. Louis must have seen the moment he dies and his son's reaction to the Chrysalis must be an indication that moment would be coming soon.
"No... this.. this can't happen... EVERYONE! YOU HAVE TO RUN! YOU WILL ALL DIE HERE IF YOU DON'T!" Louis forced himself to yell, but his body felt so drained and everything just hurt to move. Louis tried to bring himself to his feet and Adrien moved to support him onto his feet. Louis looked back at the other wielders who looked at him with bated breath and apprehension.
"Louis?" Adrien asked and he could feel his heart break as Louis' breath hitched and he slowly turned to look at his dad. The look in his eyes just looked desperate and pleading and just defeated.
"Dad?" Louis bit his lip and pushed himself away from his dad's embrace, "we're... out of time..." Louis whispered and looked back at the other wielders who still haven't run away. They looked ready to defend his family, but no matter what happens, their lives will be the price. Louis doesn't need the butterfly miraculous to sense the fear coming off of them.
"Louis, no, no it can't end like this, we just have to get everyone away from here," Adrien protested but Louis shook his head and hobbled over to his mom and siblings and stood in front of them to protect them.
"It is against a superhero's very being to run away from evil, to run away from the darkness that remains unchecked. If that's how it's going to be... then so be it," Louis stared up at Gabriel and the Chrysalis of Paradise. Gabriel smirked evilly and thrust out his hand to send out all the tentacles and antennae to capture all of the wielders.
"NOOOOO!" Emilie screamed and she looked as the tentacles and antennae slithered and burst out at a frightening speed to pierce all of the wielders despite their attempts to escape. Louis and everyone looked in despair at all every wielder screaming out in pain and they could hear the bloodcurdling piercing and the silence that followed. For some reason the tentacles had not targeted the Agreste family, not yet anyway. There was nothing any of them could do to help and all of their kwamis were out of commission.
"EVERYONE! NOOOO!" Marinette gasped out in horror as every wielder was slowly brought back to Gabriel's side. Louis could see the blood all over the tentacles and he could see Auntie Alya, Uncle Nino, Auntie Chloe, and everyone else struggling to stay conscious.
"You are all going to be offered to the Chrysalis for the sake of my world," Gabriel grinned triumphantly and Louis could tell that the man is thinking that he won. In fact, it may just seem like it since Gabriel managed to capture every wielder. Gabriel gestured to the Chrysalis and the Chrysalis pulled everyone inside, the looks of regret, pain, and sadness evident on every face before they got pulled inside, never to be seen again. Marinette, Adrien, and Émilie could only look on in horror as Gabriel turned to them and smiled as if a tear could come out of his eye. It wasn't evil at all, but it seemed more like a relieved smile that his dream was finally going to come true: the recreation of his entire family.
"You're next Louis Agreste," Gabriel growled as he commanded the Chrysalis to grab Emilie out of the way and attack Louis, Hugo, and Emma. All Louis could do was turn around and protect Hugo and Emma with his own body. There were yells of protest and indignation, but then... there was nothing.
Louis didn't feel anything, it was a deadly silence and he was just expecting the talon of the Chrysalis of Paradise to rip through him. Louis slowly looked down at his own body to make sure that he was still alive, and saw his siblings under him, their eyes scrunched closed as if they were expecting the attack as well. All Louis heard was their breathing and Louis slowly raised his body off of them and slowly turned around to find the one sight that he never wanted to see. His entire body ran cold and Louis felt like he had died right then and there. Louis saw his parents standing in his place, the talon piercing both their bodies like a sick kebob.
Louis felt like he couldn't speak, but he felt the tears stream out of his eyes as he finally choked out the only thought that came to mind, "Why?" Louis looked at his parents for a moment, taking in their pained faces and he felt a rush of anger filled sorrow building within him like a bubble that was about to burst, "WHYYYYYYYY?!!!" Louis screamed and doubled over in anguish, no longer looking at their faces, but at the talon that had ripped through their bodies. He could see the blood and Louis felt completely numb looking at his parents' injury. Louis closed his eyes and tried to will for all of it to disappear, but this was real, his parents were about die right in front of him.
Adrien groaned in pain, trying to find the strength to open his eyes so he could look at his son. He saw his wife in front of him and cursed the fact that they both had the same idea to protect the kids in this way.
"Louis... Are.. are you alright?" Adrien asked slowly, looking around Louis to find the twins were unharmed. Sighing in relief, Adrien felt a waves of pain course through him in increasing magnitude from the Chrysalis' talon. However, he willed himself to be able to look at his children one last time.
Louis let out a sob as he looked up into his father's eyes, trying to etch his father's face into his heart despite the tears that were burning his vision. Looking towards his mom, who was trying to breath despite having half of her body's organs pierced out of her, Louis let out a harsh breath, letting the tears just flow out.
"This... isn't real... I... I'm going to wake up in my room, and Mom, you're gonna call me to come down for breakfast, and Dad's going to take me to school just like always. Dad, you always ask me that question before I leave the car, and I always answer with the same thing every time," Louis whimpered out through uneven breaths, hearing the labored breathing and the silence. Glacies looked at Louis' worriedly and he looked at Adrien and Marinette with a pained and somber expression, knowing that they weren't able to change their fates. It was killing Louis, not hearing a single thing or even a response, "Why aren't you saying anything?!"
Only Louis' sobs and sniffles could be heard and Emilie could only watch in horror seeing this entire thing unfold.
Marinette slowly reached her hand to cup Louis' face, raising it to hers, "Louis, my sweet boy, please forgive me for letting you go through this on your own. I know you were trying your hardest to prevent this, you shouldn't have had to deal with this alone," Louis shook his head slowly and he hung his head slightly, not able to look at his mother in the eyes.
"I still couldn't do anything, that's just how weak I am. I can't... save anyone. Mom I'm so sorry, I saw this vision so many times and I was terrified of living the moment where I would lose everything. You have such a terrible son... some hero he is. Why in the world would you save him?! It won't matter if you save him because he feels like he's already dead!" Louis lamented with increasing volume, hating himself for letting himself live this moment. He really did want to die in this moment. Louis never wanted to see this moment come to reality, and yet he couldn't escape it. This was just simply another event Louis had to let happen in order to find the real moment that he had to change. However, could he bring himself to do that?
"You're not terrible Louis, if anything, you're exceptional. I was so afraid when you first found and wielded your miraculous, but you turned out to be one of the most powerful wielders I've ever seen. That's doesn't... that doesn't change the fact that I never wanted this life for you. Being a superhero is hard business, and I should have known it was taking a toll on you. I should have done more for you..." Marinette cried and Louis bit his lip to keep himself from sobbing anymore and laid his hand on top of hers, rubbing it gently.
"Mom? Mom, please don't cry. It's ok, I... chose this life because I wanted it. I didn't think I would be prepared for this... I hoped this day would never come but... that's wishful thinking isn't it? Now... you're both going to die and it's all my fault," Louis took a gasping breath and tried to will his tears to go away, but they wouldn't. The anger was no longer there, it was just sorrow, exhaustion, and resignation.
"You are right about several things," Louis heard Gabriel call out from above them and he felt that surge of hatred and rage all over again, "This is all your fault and they are going to die. They're going to die knowing that their terrible son willingly let this happen, after all Louis, you knew, and you did nothing," Louis grit his teeth and glared at Gabriel, disgusted by the fact that the man knew exactly how Louis felt about his failure, "Despair knowing that your incompetence was their undoing," Gabriel brought his hand out to command the Chrysalis to drag Adrien and Marinette into the Chrysalis and Louis felt himself panic in desperation, wanting to see his parents for just a little while longer.
"Gabriel, how can you say that when you don't even realize what you've done?! You still haven't given me an answer from before. I don't understand how you of all people could go through with this and not feel any remorse for your sins, have you really changed that much?" Emilie asked Gabriel desperately in an attempt to stop Gabriel, still struggling in midair in Gabriel's hold, and she saw Louis shake his head in disagreement, "if you really are going through with this, then at least let Louis have his final moments with Adrien and Marinette. You can at least do that can't you? I'm begging you..." Emilie's voice broke with emotion and Gabriel could hear her sorrow in her voice. Gabriel turned to look at Emilie's desperate eyes for a moment, and it looked to Louis as if a god was contemplating humanity for the first time as ironic as that sounds.
"You see Gabriel? Even though Emilie is alive now... what makes you think she would want anything to do with you? You chose power and those jewels over your own son, and for what? Your dream? It's a world that's essentially fake," Louis bit back with as much venom he could muster. However, his words fell on a somber and remorseful note, and Louis was completely ok with that. Gabriel stayed silent at those words but Louis could tell that it hit a nerve.
"Louis, enough, it's ok," Adrien spoke softly and Louis turned his attention to his dad again, who smiled weakly at his son, "If anything... it's my fault for letting you inherit our problems... and our mistakes. But I want you to know that your dream won't be fake, we may not be able to help you make your dream a reality anymore, but know that I love you, and I have faith that you'll be able to make it happen," Louis' eyes widened slightly when Adrien had mentioned his dream, his father had remembered what Louis had said for his birthday. Louis saw his father's earnest and loving eyes and he felt so ashamed that he let someone so important to him down. Louis scrunched his eyes to clear his eyes of his tears and shook his head.
"How... how can I do this without you? I'm.. I'm not like you two. How could I possibly-" Louis started but Marinette softly cut him off and grabbed both of his hands and placed it within hers.
"You have Hugo and Emma, and I know that you three can do it together," Marinette replied softly and Louis turned around to look at his siblings' unconscious bodies and Louis felt his heart break again knowing that he would have to find a way to explain to Hugo and Emma that their parents would be gone, "my only regret is that I wish I had more time with you... I... will never get to see you grow up, or go to college, or see any of your future accomplishments. There were so many more things I wanted to share with you. There were so many things I wanted to cry, to laugh, to smile about with you. I'll never be able to do any of those things with you, Hugo, or Emma and I just wish we had more time," Marinette sobbed, breaking down into tears and Louis felt himself move forward to hug his mom, passionately nuzzling into her neck and crying into it. Louis could feel his mom's warmth fading and he wanted to remember what his mom felt like for as long as he could. Gabriel reached out his hand and started to pull the appendage back into the Chrysalis of Paradise, taking Adrien and Marinette with it. Louis tried to hold on for as long as he could, trying in vain to keep his parents with him and his siblings, but it was eventually getting too strong for him.
"Gabriel! You don't have to do this! Please! Please spare them, I'm begging you! You already have both of their miraculous, what more could you possibly want now?! Emilie's alive!" Louis pleaded, his begging bordering on a scream. Seeing that Gabriel wasn't going to stop, Louis felt so desperate in that moment, he didn't care if this wasn't how it was supposed to end, he just didn't want to see his parents die right in front of him, "I'll give you anything you want, but please spare them!"
"Anything?" Gabriel asked and Adrien and Marinette looked despairingly at Louis, the boy stripped of his dignity and his pride as a miraculous wielder, reduced to begging Gabriel for their lives. Louis realized the error of his request and immediately corrected it, clenching his fists into the dirt and feeling his nails draw blood.
"I'll give you anything but my miraculous, please... it doesn't have to be this way" Louis clenched his teeth and pleaded. Glacies felt his heart break for his wielder and the fact that they were both powerless to stop Gabriel, there was nothing Glacies could do for Louis in that moment and it seemed that all hope was lost.
"So... that would be your life then," Gabriel glowered and Louis could him smile in victory knowing that it was checkmate for the boy. Louis closed his eyes in frustration and he felt like he wanted to scream for putting himself in this situation to begin with. Adrien and Marinette's eyes widened at the proposition and Adrien immediately objected in the strongest voice he could muster. The appendage started to drag and lift them up, but Adrien dug his heels into the ground to prevent their demise for just a few more moments.
"NO! Gabriel, that's enough! You won't be taking his life today, I'll personally see to it that you don't!" Adrien bellowed and everyone was shocked at the man's outburst. Adrien looked back at his father and Gabriel could see the sharp, burning gaze of his eyes and Gabriel felt compelled by his son's conviction and strength to intervene. Adrien turned his gaze back to Louis, and he could see his son's shocked and teary eyed face trying to look into his own for answers. Adrien's gaze softened and he felt a surge of pain go through him due to the sharp appendage piercing his stomach, "Louis, I've made a lot of mistakes in my life, and I know that it's too much to ask of you to fix them, but promise me that you'll set this right," Adrien asked of Louis, who paled at his dad's request and Adrien could see all the doubts swirling in his eyes, but he had faith in his son, he believed in him, "Promise me!"
"Ok Dad I promise... I will... I will set things right I promise," Louis sobbed and he could see his parents' teary eyed faces that were full of love and sorrow before they were dragged out of Louis' reach and Louis watched as they were taken into the Chrysalis never to be seen again, "MOM! DAD! NOOOOOO!!!!!" Louis reached his hand out to the Chrysalis and he fell back down to his hands and knees, seeing the darkness overtake them and he scrunched his eyes closed, wanting to fade away into the blackness that he could only see now. Everything seemed dark and Louis really couldn't see a way out. Emilie hung her head and slowly looked at the Chrysalis in despair knowing that her poor son and his wife were now dead.
"Oh god... Adrien... Marinette, please forgive me... for everything..." Emilie sobbed and she looked up to face Louis, who was still reeling from the death of his parents. Louis exhaled a harsh breath and looked backed to eye his siblings' unconscious bodies. He really couldn't tell if it was a good thing that they weren't able to witness their parents'
"Louis, the time for your futile effort has come to an end, you have nothing now... the only thing left for you to do now is to die by my hand," Louis heard Gabriel, but refused to open his eyes. All Louis could do was let his tears falls and a single tear fell onto his charm bracelet, the one that his parent's gave him for his birthday. The bracelet was made from the combination of both his mom and dad's lucky charms, Louis remembered being so excited to receive that gift for his 6th birthday, and it became his miraculous soon after when he awakened Glacies. It was the only thing he had left of his parents now. As soon as the tear splashed onto the bracelet, Glacies noticed that the bracelet started to glow, slowly glowing brighter with ever second even though Louis hasn't noticed yet.
Glacies realized what this meant and thought to himself, "This is...this is the moment where everything changes. The future must be averted here!" Glacies flew into the bracelet without Louis' command and Gabriel and Emilie immediately noticed the surge in power. The bracelet turned several shades of blue to signify Glacies' occupation and a powerful blizzard started to swirl around Louis, who barely noticed anything around him. The only thing Louis could feel was his rage and his grief, everything else just seemed like a moment passing in time.
"This power, it's even greater than before! When did the boy learn to possess so much strength?!" Gabriel roared, starting to feel frustrating by Louis' refusal to give up. Gabriel has taken his friends, his parents, and the city he loves, and yet Louis can still fight? Louis was completely covered in a soft white light and the blizzard grew stronger around him as Louis hunched over further in grief, the power covering him and transforming him into his superhero form, but it was different this time. Emilie watched in sadness as the blizzard overwhelmed the unconscious bodies of Hugo and Emma and the ruins of Paris. It seemed as the concept of time itself was howling with the winds and the coldness that Louis brought. Gabriel immediately moved in front of Emilie to protect her as Louis threw his body back upright and screamed, his voice full of grief and rage.
"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" Louis screamed as the blizzard expanded rapidly and ravaged all of Paris. Gabriel blocked them both from the blast, but the power was almost too great for him. Gabriel and Emilie closed their eyes to shield themselves from the shine of the blast and when they opened them, the ruined Paris around them was transformed into something that defied Emilie's imagination. The crimson sky was no more, but the sky as far as she could see was just the galaxy and the cosmos. Every star imaginable was shining in the sky and she could see other galaxies in the sky, and they were close enough that she could see them swirling. Everything was frozen over and the rubble of the buildings were floating in midair, frozen as if they were locked in time. Entire acres of land were sundered from the ground and brought up into the air, and Emilie could see gusts of snow in the air that weren't moving, suspended in mid air. Gabriel and Emilie looked around and the blizzard blast formed a dome around the entire city of Paris and they could see giant chains made of ice cover the entire dome. Once they interconnected with each other and locked into place, the dome disappeared, leaving only the five of them. Gabriel and Emilie saw Louis floating up to meet them, looking different from before and Emilie could feel his warm aura and how it was swirling with rage.
"What did you do?" Gabriel asked, his voice full of malice and Louis rose up to meet him with a gaze that was equal in the amount of malice and hatred. Gabriel used his powers of creation and destruction to send out a wave throughout spacetime to figure out what Louis did and he opened his eyes suddenly when he finished, "You... you locked the entire world in a time rift!?" Emilie looked around and she vaguely understood what he meant. Everything was suspended, frozen in time, even the snowflakes could no longer fall with grace.
Louis held his lance upright and the gem on it shone with a brilliance as the boy started to explain, "I froze the world in all timelines so that time will not move forward for anything anymore. You can longer harm this world or hurt anyone ever again as Paris itself will be lost to time..." Suddenly, two chambers in the shape of a snowflake rose behind Louis and Emilie could see Hugo and Emma sealed safely inside.
"You think I'm going to just let you have your way?" Gabriel glowered as Louis and Emilie could feel his aura intensify and Emilie felt afraid for the world if Louis and Gabriel continued to clash like this even though Paris was already in ruins. Louis however was unfazed, in fact his aura only seemed to intensify in response to Gabriel's. It felt like two gods were about to fight each other and everything around them would be collateral damage.
"When has anything ever gone my way in this world? My entire life has led up to fighting you... and I'm going to break free of that fate by killing you both," Louis replied without a hint of emotion as he looked straight at Gabriel and Emilie. Emilie felt a chill of fear run down her spine and she noticed his eyes looked so icy and cold and she knew that he had lost all sense of hesitation, "this is the only way I can set things right..."
"How many times have you sworn to kill me in every alternate future? What makes you think that this time will be any different?" Gabriel challenged Louis and the boy let out a small laugh before pointing his lance with the gem gleaming at Gabriel and suddenly, a star gleamed in the sky and a giant icicle shot down from the cosmos like an arrow and pierced Gabriel before he could react. The impact sent Gabriel straight down into the earth with a mighty crash, creating an enormous shockwave that sent rubble and ice flying before being frozen in time from Louis' spell. Emilie gasped and yelped as Gabriel's hold on her vanished and Louis summoned a flurry of snow that kept her airborne and Emilie looked at Louis in shock as the boy turned to her, a cold fury in his eyes.
"Louis, I know you're angry and you'll never forgive me, but know that I'm sorry that I wasn't able to do more for Adrien and Marinette, truly I am," Emilie felt the cold seeping into her body and she was starting to feel numb. Louis didn't the slightest hint of being swayed, if he was somehow convinced, he didn't show it.
"Maybe your apology would have meant something if my dad were still alive, but he's dead... so surely you know that I'm not the one you need to apologize to. I don't need it," Louis' jaw clenched and right before he could do anything else, a large crash could be heard and Louis looked down to find Gabriel breaking free of his attack and flying up at light speed to attack Louis. Louis whisked Emilie off on the other side to save her from Gabriel's attack and just as Gabriel cocked back a punch to him, Louis drew out his hand to block it. Their attacks collided and an enormous shockwave resonated throughout Paris and Emilie felt the sheer power of the universe against her body. She didn't understand how her body could even take it. Louis closed his hand around Gabriel's fist tightly and before Gabriel could react, he felt a flurry of searing cold slices go across his body before he was sent flying back.
"Tch, how? I didn't even see the boy cast an Ultima," Gabriel huffed under his breath, regaining his balance in midair before feeling that familiar slowing sensation from being in an Ultima. Gabriel noticed how the entire city around them looked like it was in a thick blizzard and realized what that obscene show of power that Louis exhibited before: Louis casted an Ultima over the entirety of Paris and slowed down time to a point where not even the tiniest fraction of a second would do anything.
Louis narrowed his eyes at the shine of registration in Gabriel's eyes and he surmised that the man must have figured it out by now. Louis looked back the snowflake chambers that he housed his siblings in and saw that their wounds have healed from before. Breathing a sigh of relief, Louis turned his attention to Emilie and twirled his hand, commanding the flurry that was holding her to set her down on the ground. Then, Louis snapped his fingers and the two chambers descended to the ground and the ice melted away, leaving Hugo and Emma safely on the ground as well. Soon, the twins opened their eyes and their kwamis immediately floated out to gauge the increasingly terrifying atmosphere that was building between the two wielders.
"Louis? Doesn't he look kind of different?" Hugo gasped for breath, but found that his entire body felt cool and at ease thanks to Louis' powers. Emma still felt afraid, seeing that Louis was the only one left standing.
"Louis! Where's Maman and Papa?!" Emma asked as Louis said nothing and he merely turned his head so she could barely see his side profile. The look Emma registered on his face was nothing short of bad news and it was essentially a confirmation of the worst, "No... No..." Emma covered her mouth her hands to cover her sobs and she felt Hugo's presence next to her and she turned to look at him. Her brother already had tears in his eyes and he shook his head, unable to say anything, "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!" Emma screamed as she summoned Fawkes and transformed herself in anger and sadness. Emma rose up to meet Louis to face Gabriel and Hugo looked at the oncoming battle for a moment longer before summoning his own kwami and transforming. Hugo ran up to his siblings' side and brandished his sword furiously at Gabriel. Emilie could only watch atop the rubble as the Agreste family tore itself apart. This is what it came to, the tragedy of the Future Past.
After another long haul of fighting, Louis braced himself for another impact as he fended off another barrage of attacks to prevent their attackers from coming any closer. He saw his younger brother Hugo retreat back, hearing his laboured and utterly exhausted breathing; however, he kept his sword at the ready, albeit shaking in his hands. Louis knew that this battle was taking too long, it was just a matter of time before Gabriel Agreste would overwhelm them, and ultimately kill them. Paris, the once beautiful city of lights and love, was devoid of both, scarred by the battle that started here. Emma, their sister, floated from above and continued to watch for any sudden movements from Gabriel and their former family friend, Nathalie, who had sacrificed herself for Gabriel's cause for his dream to be realized, even if it came at the cost of his own son or even his grandchildren. To be blunt, it was an utterly bitter battle.
"Gabriel don't you see what you're doing here? Your dream is a pit with no bottom, and it can't be satisfied," Louis growled, gripping his lance tighter as Gabriel made no moves to acknowledge him, but he only sneered at him, "Your dream ended when you killed our dad... your own son... don't you realize that? Do you think that Emilie would approve of any of this?!" Louis swallowed the bile in his throat as he relived the awful memories from what happened, just choking the sentence out of his mouth took effort.
"Louis don't! He won't listen to reason... this monster was the one who decided to sacrifice the lives of countless people in Paris in exchange for one, you can't reason with someone who thinks of something as diabolical as that!" Hugo looked knowingly at Louis, who was completely aware that those words rang true, but he didn't want to admit it. The three however, heard a chuckle coming from Gabriel, who emanated with such a raw universal power that it seemed to twist the perception of reality itself: the fires raged hotter, the buildings never seemed to stop tearing themselves apart, and the screams just grew louder.
"You will join your parents soon... and everything will be back to the way it was..." Gabriel murmured absentmindedly, with the siblings noting the wistfulness and hatred in his voice. Everything about this situation was unfair, the repercussions and consequences of this battle were simply based on selfish desire, and what could anger the three more than that.
"You're full of it! It was you!" Emma yelled, her body being cloaked in a shining blaze, the atmosphere being exponentially hotter around them. The fire that surrounded her reflected off her crimson cloak, making her look like a phoenix that was just reborn, "who couldn't let go of the past! You've spent your entire life on that stupid dream! And now! Poor Maman... and Papa had to pay the price...and you stole their powers!" Emma charged forward, intent on body slamming the man, who did nothing but intercept her, resulting in a brilliant clash that brought more destruction from its blast radius. Even though she tried, she felt herself get overpowered and she yelped out in pain as she was sent flying back. Before she could crash into anything, she felt two arms wrap around her and she glanced out of the corner of her eye that Hugo caught her in midair, but the momentum still sent them crashing into the ground. Louis looked back at them quickly, grit his teeth, and glanced back towards Gabriel, Nathalie, and Lila who were getting ready to strike again.
"Are you two ok!?" Louis exclaimed, trying to squint past the dust cloud to find that Hugo managed to dig his feet into the ground and land on his two feet, with Emma still in his arms. Seeing that, he could breathe a sigh of relief knowing that his siblings were safe for now. However, seeing the futile situation that they were in, Louis made a choice, a choice that would seal his fate forever. He whipped out his lance and aimed it past Hugo and Emma, and there in the surroundings of darkness appeared a brilliant light blue portal that emanated a chilly wind in the atmosphere. Hugo looked back in surprise at his brother's action, but he could see Louis getting ready to take on those two again.
"Lou... what are you doing?" Hugo groaned as he let go of Emma and Louis immediately explained.
"I'll try to buy as much time as I can... but you two need to go through that portal..." Louis explained calmly as Hugo still cocked his head in confusion.
"A portal? But Lou, that won't matter if Gabriel could still find us! Where could we possibly go?" Hugo exclaimed, his tone almost begging as he felt a sinking feeling arise in his chest. Emma didn't have the energy to speak, but Hugo could tell she was also confused by Louis' sudden decision.
"Into the past... where the future has not happened yet... I'm sending you back 15 years into the past, so you can alter this time period," Louis continued, his words making everyone's eyes widen. Gabriel couldn't believe the last ditch attempt this boy was making just so he could save those insufferable brats.
Emma coughed to clear her throat to ask weakly, "Then aren't you coming with us?" Louis looked back at her, and she could see the forlorn emotions in his eyes. After a moment, he shook his head.
"No... I must remain here, to hold him off here... for just a little longer" Louis sighed, with the two siblings gasping in horror. Hugo looked desperately between Louis and their opponents in the distance, and he could understand why he was making this sacrifice, but he just didn't want to leave his brother behind.
"But that's... this.. Isn't," Hugo tried to say but faltered when Gabriel laughed maniacally and combined his hands together, launching forth a powerful beam that consisted of their parents' stolen powers. Louis cursed under his breath as he looked sharply at the oncoming beam, thrusting his lance forward to intercept the beam. Fortunately for him, his resolve cut the beam in half, sending the halves off on a different trajectory that just luckily missed his siblings behind him, destroying more of the city in the process.
"This isn't fair... Why does it have to be you?!" Emma screamed as she shielded her eyes from the blinding light. She saw a figure, her older brother Louis standing in the way of the combined beam of creation and destruction that would have killed her. Their enemy was formidable and despite her and her siblings' best efforts, their powers weren't enough to save their home. Her twin brother, Hugo, has been blessed by nature's bounty and the dragons themselves, but his powers weren't enough. She wielded the undying fire of the phoenix and the power of resurrection, yet she felt like she still only had one life. Louis wielded the daunting power of ice and has the ability to freeze and control time itself, yet his powers couldn't turn back time to that one blissful moment when her family was happy. Hugo steadied her as the rumbling died down and her eyes adjusted to the scene around her. The once beautiful buildings of Paris became inscrutable, just rubble and ash with blazing fires raging through the city. It was that gut shattering feeling of despair that made her feel sick, both siblings were on the verge of losing everything, and they could only stare in horror trying to watch their brother get up.
"I made a promise to Mom and Dad I would protect you two," Louis huffed as he lowered his lance and fell down to one knee.
"Louis!" Emma called out, her legs automatically moving to go to her older brother, but she felt a hand on her arm and she whipped around to find Hugo shaking his head while keeping a forlorn look on his face, "Hugo! Let me go to him!"
"We can't Emm, if we go any closer, then Gabriel's just going to kill us," Hugo replied as Emma turned back around to the man in question. She couldn't even recognize him, there were so many nebulous parts to him that she couldn't even tell if he had a single human body part. However, the only thing that she could remember was that sinister smirk on his face, a smirk that haunted all three siblings. It was the face they saw every time he took something from them. His partner beside him, Nathalie, looked just as malicious as him. However it didn't make a difference since she found both of them to be monsters. Hugo could never believe the fact that their grandfather was trying to kill them and going to these extreme lengths, going as far as killing his own son, their father and their hero. Papa and Maman weren't going to save them, it's down to the three of them, the legacy of the heroes of Paris.
Louis dug his lance into the ground to force himself to his feet and looked back tiredly at his siblings, "Hugo's right... I already told you Emm, you need to get out of here. I'll be alright. I'll be right behind you," Louis sighed quietly as he stood up again to face Gabriel, who floated in the distance in front of the ravaged Eiffel Tower and his relic of disaster, The Chrysalis of Paradise. The Chrysalis of Paradise is an ancient device that was used to plague the minds of humans into demons, simply turning innocent humans into horrifying odious monsters that devastated the city. When you get caught by the chrysalis, your light and soul will be purged from your body, and darkness and death shall claim it. Louis, Hugo, and Emma have simply lost too many loved ones that were trying to protect them from it. Now, the three siblings were the only heroes that could stand up against Gabriel, but now they have no choice but to make more sacrifices.
"You promise?" Emma asked as she turned her head slightly at the portal behind her that glowed with a luminescent blue glow. She looked back at her brother to find him giving her a small smile, a small smile of reassurance that made her feel better. Louis always managed to do that, making her feel better with something as little as a smile, a light in the darkness that was her life.
"I promise," Louis nodded with Emma noting the shine in his eyes, and suddenly, she knew what he was planning to do. With a sigh, she lowered her head for a moment, cursing how two simple words could be so contrived.
"You always were such a terrible liar..." Emma whispered, causing Hugo and Louis to look at her in surprise.
"What?" Louis asked before being cut off by his sister.
"You hide it with your smile, but I can tell... you never had any intention of leaving this place did you?" Emma felt her heart break as she scrutinized his expression further to draw the truth from him.
"I'm- I'm sorry, but Emm, you know that I love you two so much right?" Louis asked and she found something different in his eyes: regret, sadness, love, it was like they were begging her to go faraway like the dandelions in the wind.
"That's not even a question Louis! You promised so don't you die on us!" Hugo exclaimed as Emma looked up to find tears in her brother's eyes. He rarely showed emotion, specifically crying, and so it surprised her that his face contorted in such a fashion. He had always been quiet, and this felt like his first real surge of emotion in years.
"Right... so just do this one last favor for your big brother ok?" Louis flashed a smile of reassurance that was genuine, but it seemed rather forced in a way where regardless of his confidence, he knew that he wasn't going to get out of this unscathed, "that portal should take you about 15 years into the past where I believe the point of depravity lies, where it all went wrong. While I hold Gabriel here, you two need to change the chain of causality to alter this period of time, ok?"
"We promise, and I don't care if you doubt yourself, but please make it back to us! Family sticks together, I don't want to lose anyone else today!" Emma yelled out in one big breath, she felt her eyes blurring from the tears but she could still make out that familiar figure of her brother smiling at her. It was the last memory she would have of him for a while. She turned around and took a hold of Hugo's hand, taking a moment to look back with her brother at the carnage and destruction, the signs of their failure, but they had to move on. She then heard a roar just as the pair entered the portal.
"IT'S FUTILE! YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING TO GET AWAY?! YOUR ANNIHILATION OF YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY IS AT HAND!" Gabriel roared as he launched himself forward, intent on stopping the pair, however he was immediately intercepted by Louis and his lance that emanated a bright chilling light.
"Oh no you don't!" Louis growled as he effortlessly parried Gabriel's attack and sent him backwards with a resounding clang, sending a cold blizzard raging through the air from his attack. Emma and Hugo watched as the vision of their present faded and they were awash in a bright blue light as they were whisked away into the universe beyond. All Hugo could see was the figure of their older brother, a knight donned in white, an arbiter of snow and time, and he believes with all of his heart that his brother can win.
Gabriel floated backward and sneered at Louis, who stood tall and continued to stare at Gabriel with a pointedness that just emanated cold cut seriousness. It was just them alone now, no one to interfere and no one to stop them. Louis knew that eventually, one of their powers had to give in and he had a sinking feeling that Gabriel, who had stolen both his mom and dad's powers of creation and destruction, would win. Both of those combined together reminded him of how hard his parents tried to save him, and ultimately how weak he was to prevent Gabriel from sacrificing them to the Chrysalis of Paradise and killing them. He could still remember their last words ringing in his ears:
Promise me you'll set this right... Louis...
"Who do you think you are boy? Your parents are dead... you think you can still play the hero?" Gabriel mocked the boy, who remained unfazed by his words, his demeanor completely still, strong, and calculating. Louis felt the power of his gift surge up within him, emanating off his body in powerful waves. In stark contrast with the rest of the world, which was ash, flames, and absolute darkness, Louis was like a shining beacon of hope that will take on the everlasting darkness alone... for eternity.
"Who do you think I am? My name," Louis paused for a moment before continuing, "is Louis Agreste, and no matter what you take from me, just know that at the end of this," Louis took in a deep breath as he closed his eyes for a brief moment, "One of us will end up dead."
Gabriel scoffed as he readied himself again, "It's amusing you think you're going to live..."
Louis let his lips tug into a smirk for the first time in ages as he faced Gabriel, "I made a promise, a promise I intend to keep. Simple as that," Louis said softly as the two prepared to clash again, again, and again, and again. A fight that seemed endless, a sacrifice that a brother made for his dear siblings, a failed future that hangs in the balance; at one point it seems that everything was going to fall apart. From afar, you could see the clashes of Louis' pale blue light and Gabriel's galactic purple, resonating in the air with such a ferocity that you wouldn't even be able to stand. The world became more warped around them as the two lost themselves in the gray waves of turbulence, a storm of hatred. The only thing despite the warped chaos that was still standing straight as an arrow, was that wretched Eiffel Tower, where the Future Past began.
Maman... Papa... wherever you're watching me from... Know that I did all I could to protect the last hope Paris has... I hope you're proud of my choices... my decisions... because I don't know whether I made the right ones or not, but know that this final decision was mine and I hope you can be proud of that. Thanks to Hugo, Emma, and you two... I know what's at stake... so I will remain here as a light in the darkness so not another soul has the misfortune of experiencing this wretched place. I will guide them out of this place and into the light... and maybe someday... I will join you there, in that beautiful place where you've gone. But for now... I'm needed here to keep a promise... as an Agreste, I bear that name with pride. My name... is Louis Agreste... and that's a promise...
The light faded as the pair felt their bodies hit the ground and they felt cool, crisp, clean air fill their lungs, a clear contrast with the dry, smoky air they were just breathing a few moments ago. Emma took an apprehensive breath, making sure that what she was breathing was real. The pair was still lying on the ground and holding themselves up by their arms. They heard no signs of fire, or smoke burning, or even the screams of those they failed to protect. They just heard water, the slight howl of the wind, and their ragged breathing.
Hugo slowly turned his head up towards their surroundings and found that they landed behind some bushes near the Eiffel Tower. He slowly turned his head to his sister to find her looking at the ground, silent. Her hands curled into fists, her fingers creating imprints in the ground. Soon he could see the little dark spots where her tears fell, hearing her silent sniffles in the silence of the night.
"Emma?" Hugo called out softly as he grasped at his remaining strength to kneel in front of her, but she still refused to look at him.
"How..." Emma asked quietly as she no longer cared about fighting through her tears, she just let them sting and blur her vision, "How did it come to this?" She didn't really expect an answer, all she wanted was to dissemble the awful memories into nothingness, "Gabriel... Nathalie, and that accursed Chrysalis of Paradise... they played us for complete idiots..."
Hugo could only look at her in sympathy and understanding, he felt just as much sadness and contempt for their entire situation. However, he felt like he had to be Emma's support, even if he himself is breaking into pieces. He could only listen to her as she aired out all of her vindictiveness and lament.
"All of our work...how much we tried to endure his onslaught against Paris... it was all for nothing..." Emma scoffed in disbelief as she was making a joke out of her own weakness. Hugo attempted to reach his hand out to comfort her, but Emma flinched back when he barely grazed her shoulder, finally bringing her face to meet his. It was a face that broke his heart, his twin sister being in so much anguish and pain.
"Emm.. it wasn't all for nothing, Louis gave us one last chance-" Hugo tried to reassure her, but he was immediately cut off.
"You think it's possible? What do we have to show for it?!" Emma asked, a little louder than she wanted, but she was just so incredibly tired of fighting. It was a lot for a 10 year old to comprehend and accept because of everything they just went through, "Lou gave us this chance, but we don't even know what to do... Hugo look around!" Emma cried, looking around at Paris with contempt, because there was not a single burning piece of rubble in sight, "Louis didn't send us back here because he had some sort of final mission for us to do, he sent us back because this is the last place where Gabriel could ever reach us!" Emma derides, feeling her eyes fall when she thought about her last moments with her family and what Louis did for her and Hugo, "Louis knew... And Gabriel knew that no matter where we ran or where we hid, he would always find us... this was Louis' last chance to take us away from there once and for all... and now he's stuck there with him..." All she felt was defeat and vindictiveness, but she always wondered what Hugo felt about this entire situation since he's been mostly silent in these last couple of moments.
"You know Emm, I'd like to believe that he sent us here for a purpose, knowing that he's stuck there with him? It's unbearable..." Hugo murmured, closing his eyes for a moment, feeling the tension in his entire body was almost too much for him, but he had to pull himself together, "We'll figure it out, we need to fulfill Louis' last wish, that's what he would want," Hugo takes Emma's hands in his and Emma saw that determination and fire in his eyes. She could never understand how he manages to stay so calm.
"How do you do it?" Emma whispered, refusing to meet his eyes as first before finally looking back into his emerald eyes, the eyes that they shared, "For someone who just lost his parents and older brother, you're surprisingly nonchalant about it, as if it's just some cycle of life." Emma spits out and Hugo could hear the disdain and venom laced in it.
"That's not fair Emm, I-" Hugo interjected but Emma cut him off before he could continue.
"Forget it... it's over... we lost," Emma sobbed as she let go of his hands, and all of a sudden, the tension that was in the air before dissipated. Hugo didn't know what to say anymore, it wasn't long before he felt the tension in his body release and he just sighed defeatedly. For a while, neither of them spoke, however eventually Emma spoke up again.
"Hugo...I'm sorry... but I can't help but feel like a failure..." Emma started, her voice making Hugo look at her again, her tear streaked face burned into his memory, "That we left Maman, Papa, Lou, our family, our friends, and everyone in Paris... We left them all behind... to die..." Emma whispered as she broke down again and she felt herself fall forward, no longer able to stay upright. However, her brother was there to catch her and she sobbed and cried in his arms. Hugo hugged her tight and leaned his head on top of hers trying to comfort her through his own tears. The realization hit him like a truck that Louis, their last family member sacrificed himself so they could escape back in time. Everyone that Hugo had ever loved was killed in a single night. At that moment, he really felt like they had lost everything. However, the future has not passed in this time, and there is always a way to change fate's design. Regardless, he knows that they have to do this together if they're going to succeed, but for now... it's okay to cry.
It was a rainy afternoon and gray clouds swirled the skies on the day that Hugo and Emma Agreste grieved for the their fallen family. It was a small corner in a cemetery that the twins decided to make a small grave for their fallen brother. They had agreed that making a grave for their parents would be problematic for the past, but at least, they could make a grave for their older brother who didn't exist yet. Hugo used his power to make a small wooden tombstone and Emma put Louis' picture into the slot that Hugo made in the middle. Elsewhere in the cemetery, as if written by fate, Adrien and Marinette had come to visit his mom's grave in that cemetery when Adrien noticed the twins kneeling at the grave they made. His eyes softened for them as he set down the flowers he brought for his mom. Marinette noticed them as well and gave them a sympathetic look before standing up to leave, and they were both about to leave until they heard the girl speak.
"Today... we are here to honor the life of our older brother Louis Agreste... who was killed by Hawkmoth while he was trying to save our future..." Emma spoke, her voice breaking slightly because of the sobs that made their way to her throat. Adrien and Marinette froze and looked back as the girl continued with her eulogy, "He tried... so hard to fight destiny, so hard that he was willing to give up his life... to protect Paris," Emma sucked in harsh breaths as she tried to fight her tears. Adrien and Marinette couldn't recall a person dying to Hawkmoth recently, or ever, but something told them that the girl wasn't lying, looking at her tear stricken face and puffed up eyes, "There was no one who had a bigger heart and cared more for Paris than he did. He was kind... and caring... and so cool... He took on so much weight trying to prove that he was a worthy hero, but he didn't need to!" Emma broke down into sobs as she remembered just how much Louis had trained and fought to become the miraculous wielder he was then. Hugo looked over at his sister with teary eyes and looked back at his brother's picture, picking up where she left off.
"He always tried... so hard to prove himself to our parents that he was enough... but he didn't have to do anything... or be anything for us to see that he was absolutely amazing," Hugo silently sobbed as he curled his fists on his thighs, taking deep breaths to continue their speech. Adrien watched with teary eyes as he noticed how young these kids were and they had lost their older brother who meant so much to them, "How could you ever think that Maman and Papa would think any less of you if you failed? Everything that you've done Louis... it takes extraordinary strength to do what you do... and I hope you know that..." Hugo whimpered as the two of them remembered all of Louis' accomplishments in a vigil of silence. Louis had discovered his kwami Glacies at the age of 6 at the Miraculous Temple in Tibet, and mastered every weapon of Glacies' at the age of 14. Louis surpassed his parents at the age of 14, taking care of akumas at record speed and wielding power that outmatched his parents when they were his age. Louis had won the gold award for Upcoming Soloist at the ICMA's and playing the piano became his passion despite his father's personal chagrin. Louis was a star soccer player at his high school and he and his best friend Gavin led their team to victory in their freshmen season. Louis fought during the Future Past and led the final offensive against Hawkmoth when no one else could. Louis somehow found a way to save the future which involved trading his life for his siblings to create a hope in the darkness. Louis believed in them and trusted that they would find a way, but Hugo and Emma only wished that Louis would keep his promise to come after them when they knew that he never would.
"Louis..." Emma brought her hands up to her mouth to muffle her sobs for a moment before speaking again, "you can rest now... you don't have to suffer anymore..." Emma bowed her head and cried as she fell into Hugo's side who immediately comforted her as he looked at his older brother's picture. He felt tears run down his face and reached his hand out to touch his brother's picture, caressing it as if he were trying to comfort Louis somehow.
"Louis... I promise that we will fulfill your last wish... Hawkmoth is going to pay for taking you, Maman, and Papa from us," Hugo sucked in a deep breath as it became easier to breathe through the tears, anger and determination replacing his grief, "we won't let him get away... never again..." Hugo felt his anger dissipate as he stared at his brother's smiling face and he descended into sobs once again. He felt Naga come out of his shirt pocket and nuzzle his face in comfort. Fawkes came out and hugged his wielder on her shoulder. Adrien and Marinette watched in shock as they noticed the kwamis giving the children comfort.
"They... have kwamis?" Adrien whispered as Marinette nodded in acknowledgement. These two children had a miraculous of their own? Just who were they?
"I wish... I wish I could have died with him..." Hugo whispered as he tried to control his tears but they wouldn't stop flooding his vision. Emma separated from him to look at him incredulously.
"How? How could you say that? What would Louis say if he heard that? Every single moment, I wished I was still with him! Louis gave up his life because he believed we were the hope for Paris! And now!" Emma cried with an increasing volume as she pounded the ground once with her fist. She felt so frustrated because they had no idea what they were going to do. Emma had never felt so alone and scared, even with her brother by her side, it felt like they were completely at the wrong place at the wrong time and now there's nothing left, "Louis is stuck there with him!" Emma doubled over in a mournful scream and held both her hands to her chest, sobbing her grief away. Marinette could just hear the anguish in the girl's voice, but what alarmed her even more is that from what they've said, Hawkmoth killed their entire family.
"Louis... how could we do this without you!? Do you really have that much faith in us?" Hugo asked his brother's picture as if it had answers, but it didn't. It was just his brother's smiling face haunting him, condemning Hugo and Emma to a duty that only their older brother could bear, "we weren't even half the wielder you were... How is that even fair... the moment you saved our lives, you knew that your life was next. HOW IS THAT FAIR!?" Hugo screamed and thrashed his hands on the ground, doubling over in tears. Adrien's body felt like ice as he contemplated between comforting them or just watching with sympathy before letting them mourn in peace. Adrien ultimately decided against it and sighed as the two children went on like that for a while, their loud sobs turning into sniffling and the occasional sob. Soon, both of them fell asleep from exhaustion and Adrien looked around to see if there was anyone around who was looking after them, and then he realized that their entire family was dead. Adrien looked back at Marinette to find that she was already walking towards them and he followed suit.
Fawkes looked forlornly at his wielder before looking back at Louis' grave and noticed the two heroes approaching them, "Hmph... so they came after all..." the kwami signaled to his fellow kwami, who looked at the approaching heroes with a soft apprehension. Marinette approached the kwamis who made no move to hide from her, instead they floated up to meet her face. In response, Plagg and Tikki came out to meet them.
"Fawkes..." Tikki looked between the phoenix kwami and the divine dragon kwami, "Naga... it's been a while," Tikki said quietly and Naga nodded quietly back at her.
"Yes.. it has been a while hasn't it?" Naga looked between Tikki and Plagg. Remembering that the future versions of Tikki and Plagg were being used against their will by Gabriel broke Naga's heart. Naga could tell that Fawkes felt the same by the way he was shifting uncomfortably in mid air. Marinette decided to clear the silence in the air by introducing herself by energetically holding out a finger for the kwamis to shake.
"You don't have to be afraid, I'm Marinette Dupain Cheng!" Marinette introduced herself and Naga and Fawkes nodded and took her finger to shake it. Adrien looked past the kwamis to look at the two kids who were resting against the tree. They seemed to have calmed down a bit, but Adrien could still see the exhausted looks of anguish on their faces.
"We already know who you are," Fawkes looked between Marinette and Adrien. The kwami sighed for a moment, knowing that this encounter was inevitable. The Phoenix kwami surmised that Louis planned for this when he sent the twins back in time, but he just wasn't sure just how much Louis intended for the past versions of his parents to know, "let us introduce ourselves since you've never seen kwamis like us before!" Fawkes said enthusiastically before introducing himself, "I'm Fawkes, the Phoenix kwami, embodiment of resurrection and austerity. Nice to meet y'a!" Marinette studied Fawkes for a moment and smiled at him before looking over at the kwami's fellow partner.
"You may call me Naga, I am the Divine Dragon kwami, arbiter of life and benevolence," Naga bowed to the two wielders and their kwamis. Adrien looked past the kwamis to look at the children and asked the obvious question that everyone has been wondering.
"Are those two your wielders?" Adrien asked, looking softly at the kids who were still knocked out from crying.
Naga nodded and proceeded to explain, "Yes, the young girl is my fellow kwami's wielder Emmalyn, but you may call her Emma," Naga gestured to the blond haired girl who lay asleep. Adrien felt a sense of fondness wash over him as he watched them sleep. Adrien didn't know where it came from, but he couldn't help but notice how precious they both were. Marinette looked fondly at the children as well and couldn't help but notice that the little boy had a striking resemblance to Adrien when he was younger. Was that a coincidence?
"And by default, the boy over there is Naga's wielder!" Fawkes continued, and then he remembered that there was a member of their trio missing, the fact just suddenly hitting him, "and there was also..." Fawkes started but couldn't bring himself to continue. Marinette and Adrien looked at Fawkes expectantly to continue, but they frowned slightly when the kwami stayed silent. Naga looked over at Fawkes, an understanding look gracing her face and she proceeded to explain for him.
"Glacies... the third kwami of our group, he dutifully served their older brother Louis," Naga gestured to the gravestone that Hugo had made and the two heroes of Paris looked at the picture of Louis. They noticed his bright smiling face and his sunshine golden hair. His eyes was what struck them the most, they were a beautiful bluebell blue, and Adrien couldn't help but be reminded of Marinette, "he was a splendid and powerful kwami who loved Louis very much..."
"Glacies was more than just a kwami to Louis... he was his best friend, and now they're both..." Fawkes squinted his eyes to stop the tears from falling. Plagg and Tikki floated closer to get a look at the boy's face and they suddenly remembered the name, Glacies.
"Wait... Glacies... he was the kwami of time, back when there was just the three of us..." Tikki gasped as she looked back at Fawkes and Naga. Glacies, Tikki, and Plagg were the first three kwamis to exist in the universe as they represented the Origin Trio: Time, Creation, and Destruction respectively. It was only now that they remembered their old friend. How long ago was it that Glacies had disappeared without a trace? It was at the beginning of humanity when the duo could no longer find their friend anywhere. Last Plagg and Tikki heard of him, Glacies had given his power to four different members of a royal family whose kingdom fell in a great tragedy. After that, they never heard from Glacies again, but time still flowed as normal so they assumed the kwami was still active. However, they never expected that Glacies would end up lending his power to a wielder once again after that incident.
"That old wheel of cheese really went and got himself a new wielder... and look where that got him..." Plagg murmured mournfully, looking at the boy's picture as if he could feel his old friend's presence.
"So Louis... was the wielder to Glacies? The kwami of time... and you both knew him?" Marinette asked her kwami and Plagg, to which they both nodded. Adrien kneeled down to take a look at the picture of Louis and looked at the two children once again. Adrien smiled to himself unknowingly as he could tell the family resemblance between the three of them.
"Fawkes... Naga, I'm so sorry for your loss, and for them as well," Adrien gestured to the sleeping twins before continuing, "they lost their older brother when they're both so young... not to mention their parents... how in the world are they going to cope?" Adrien felt himself choking up from emotion as he remembered how pained and anguished the two children were when they grieved the loss of their older brother. Then Adrien suddenly remembered why they came over in the first place, "Is it true that their brother was murdered by Hawkmoth?" Adrien looked over at the two kwamis who refused to meet the man's eye. It was silent for a few moments, the air charged with an uncomfortable apprehension.
"It's true... however we've only assumed he's dead... but it's very much likely that Hawkmoth overpowered him and killed him..." Naga whispered as she remembered Louis' last moments before he sent them all back into the past. It was the image that plagued every future: Louis standing alone against Hawkmoth in the ruins of Paris. It's safe to say that even though Louis had succeeded in changing the fate of his siblings, he couldn't change his own, and he knew that.
"We haven't heard of Hawkmoth killing anybody though... much less a miraculous wielder," Marinette tried to make sense of the whole situation but Fawkes had already thought up of a response.
"About that... it's best if you let those two explain it to you once they wake up," Fawkes diffused Marinette's question, and then he looked pointedly at the photo of Louis, "however, if you wanted to understand a bit about what we've been through, then touch Louis' picture. I believe there still should be some memories left behind..." Fawkes explained. Louis' photo is from the future, and thus doesn't exist in this time period. Glacies had given Fawkes and Naga a little tidbit about time travel, telling them that any inanimate object that exists in a time where it shouldn't have existed yet will retain the memories that it carried throughout its passage through time. Anyone who touches the anachronistic inanimate object (specifically a photo) will share the memories it holds in time's attempt to catch up to the rightful time of that object. That was what Fawkes was counting on. Adrien and Marinette sat around Louis' grave and reached their hand out to touch his picture. Suddenly, just as their fingers grazed the photo, they began to see flashes of a teenage boy in a gallant white suit and cape.
"What is this?" Marinette asked as flashes of memories raced through her mind. Three children were bound and chained by a chrysalis looking object. A boy was shouting at them to leave the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower was set ablaze by a blinding blue light. Marinette then saw a close up of the boy's tear stricken and bloody face, his voice resounding in her ears.
"Why are all of you still here?! I told you to leave!"
"I... was happy to be a wielder just like you..."
Adrien saw flashes of an otherworldly being holding the boy by the neck. The boy was shouting at someone to escape somewhere but Adrien couldn't quite make out where to. What struck fear in Adrien was the fact that the memories seemed to take place in a ruined version of Paris.
"I'll try... to hold him for as long as I can... but you guys have to escape!"
"It was... never my destiny to defeat you... all I needed to do was buy time..."
There was one memory that stuck with both of them and it was the specific moment where Louis shouted at his family to leave. They could only assume it was Hawkmoth who had Louis by the neck at his last moments.
"Louis... I want you to know that you made my world better every day by just being you... you don't need to do anything more than just being my son... so please... come back to us..."
"I promise Dad... I'm going to make the world a better place today..."
Adrien and Marinette breathed heavily as they took their hands off of Louis' picture and a roar of thunder sounded just as they looked at the smiling picture of the boy. All of those memories and images that flashed in their heads, surely that wasn't Paris right? They haven't seen any of this happen yet, but that's exactly the thing, it hasn't happened YET. Adrien felt a sinking feeling in his stomach as he remembered that the boy's name was Louis Agreste, and them sharing their last name can't have been a coincidence. The boy also wielded a miraculous, and a question popped into Adrien's head that he couldn't help but ask.
"Are Louis and these kids... somehow related to me? They all share my last name, which I assume you both already know..." Adrien asked carefully as Fawkes and Naga looked at each other for a moment silently debating whether to tell the truth or not. Judging their reactions, Tikki and Plagg could figure out the answer that these kids were more significant than they originally realized.
Marinette stared at the kids and their kwamis for a moment before coming to a conclusion that would make sense with the memories she just saw. It's surprising, but it's not something she hasn't seen before, "These kids... are from the future aren't they?" Marinette answered for Adrien as the young man looked at Marinette incredulously for a moment before looking back at Louis' picture and the twins. Adrien then looked expectantly at the kwamis, silently beckoning them to say something and Fawkes decided to break the silence.
"It's best if our wielders explain it to you when it's time, right now they need to rest, but I believe our paths will cross again," Fawkes broke the silence, implying that Marinette and Adrien need to leave. Adrien and Marinette both got the message, but were these kids going to be alright by themselves without anyone to protect them? Marinette looked worriedly at the twins for a moment before voicing her concern.
"Surely you don't mean to leave them out here alone, it's dangerous out here for two kids, and it's about to rain soon as well," Marinette insisted, looking at the stormy sky that threatened to rain on them, "we could take you back to my place, it's certainly a lot better than here." Fawkes and Naga looked at each other again as if in some sort of silent telepathic debate and they looked at their wielders as they came to a decision.
"We would appreciate that, thank you," Naga answered and Marinette and Adrien nodded as they leaned down to help the unconscious twins up. Adrien gently hoisted Hugo onto his back and Marinette lifted Emma into her arms, leaning her head against her shoulder. Their kwamis flew up into their wielders' clothing and snuggled in them as the two young adults brought the children back to Marinette's place.
Later on, when they both reached the bakery, Adrien opened the door for Marinette as Sabine and Tom came out to meet them and looked at the two children in concern.
"Hello Marinette sweetie! Adrien! What a lovely surprise! Who do you have with you?" Sabine called out as she came up to examine the little girl in her daughter's arms.
"We found them at the cemetery when Adrien and I were visiting and they were mourning the loss of their brother. They didn't seem to have anyone watching over them and it was about to rain so I offered to bring them back to our place to rest," Marinette explained as Sabine brought a hand up to Emma's head to measure her temperature and she took note of the girl's pale complexion as it looked a little drained of color.
"Do they have any contacts or anyone we could call to pick them up later? I sure wouldn't want anyone to worrying about their absence," Tom looked to Adrien, who shook his head and looked left to Hugo who was sleeping soundly, subconsciously nuzzling into Adrien's neck. Adrien found it incredibly endearing and adorable watching the boy sleep, but Hugo was a cute kid so it wasn't hard for Adrien to feel attached already.
"No, it doesn't seem like anyone's looking for them, they don't seem to have any other family," Adrien explained as Sabine turned to Hugo to examine him and stroked his cheek, which was freezing from the rainy air. Hugo seemed to welcome the touch, but his face seemed conflicted by some sort of nightmare.
"Oh, these poor things, bring them inside the house where it's warmer," Sabine helped the pair go upstairs with the twins and eventually Adrien and Marinette laid them down in Marinette's old room. The twins barely stirred as Adrien and Marinette placed them both in Marinette's bed and watched them for a moment and they suddenly noticed all the wounds they had on their body: bruises, small cuts, and faint smears of blood and dirt. Sabine walked across the room to grab Marinette's first aid kit and handed it to Marinette who got out some antiseptic wipes and some bandages. Sabine then left the four of them alone to go back down to the bakery.
"These injuries... there's so many, but how..." Marinette's words fell on her lips and she handed a wipe to Adrien so they could clean up the twins. Their bruises and other internal injuries would just have to heal on their own. However, it only occurred to Marinette now that they should have taken them to a hospital considering the amount of injuries they sustained. Fawkes and Naga came out and Sabine looked at them in shock as they floated down to rest on their shoulders. Adrien noticed they looked sad and they almost seemed to be crying.
Fawkes looked at the passed out face of his wielder and he couldn't help but break down in tears. The bubbly, bright wielder that he knew was so silent and so broken, it felt so strange to not hear her talk excitedly about something. Her golden hair was matted from the rain and was dulled by ash and dirt. Emma and Fawkes were that duo where they could spend all night talking about the most random things. Fawkes would often tell her stories of his previous wielders because he's had so many and Emma was always enraptured by his stories. Fawkes had seen a lot of tragic stories in his day, but Emma's story was by far one of the saddest. She had lost her parents, her older brother, and all of her friends in one night. Hugo was the only one who was still alive. Fawkes had felt like it was his fault for not giving her more access to his power and it was all because he was afraid she wouldn't be able to handle it, "Kid... I'm so sorry, I messed up. If only I had taken the risk and given you more of my power, Louis and Glacies wouldn't have been forced to do what they did, Louis wouldn't have died the way he did" Fawkes sighed and his last sentence ended on a whimper and Marinette and Adrien couldn't help but be more curious to know more about what happened.
Naga looked at Fawkes with a hope that seemed almost forced as she tried to refute that last point, "Do you really think Louis was killed? He was still alive when we left him," Naga tried to argue but Fawkes sharply bit back with a bitter rebuttal.
"Louis left himself in that place to face Gabriel alone. It's practically the same thing as suicide," Fawkes choked out through his beak as he looked at his fellow kwami sadly. Even though the kwamis were opening up more about what had happened to them, Adrien and Marinette still had no idea what they were talking about. These kids had come from the future, and they had seen a glimpse of what the twins had been through via Louis' memories. However, they still couldn't piece it together.
Naga took a moment to let it sink in that Louis was most likely dead and slowly turned to Hugo with a mournful look on her face, "I hope you two can forgive us for failing to save your brother. There are no words to describe the shame and regret that I feel for being so weak..." Naga floated down onto the crook of Hugo's jacket hood and laid there crying. Hugo and Naga were the type of pair that would always dote on each other and enjoy each other's presence when they were doing nothing but staring into the stars or reading a good book. Hugo constantly took care of Naga and she would constantly call him Master Hugo despite his insistence to call him differently. Hugo was the next wielder in the line of legendary heroes that wielded the power of dragons and every hero's story was more grand than the last. Naga believed that Hugo's story be transformed into a gallant, uplifting story of courage and heroics like his previous wielders. She still believed it to this day, and despite Hugo being only 10 years old, Hugo had the potential to become a wielder of extraordinary potential.
Adrien looked at the twins and their mourning kwamis and he couldn't help but feel his heart sink with a heavy burden. These kids were from the future, and that's enough to surmise that his father, Gabriel Agreste, had done something deplorable to these children from the way that their kwamis were mourning the loss of Louis. His father did this to them. He had hurt them, and taken someone precious from them. Adrien didn't know whether to feel relieved that his father hasn't changed and he could continue to think horribly of his father or horrified that his father would do this to these poor children. The pair continued to nurse the twins' wounds and when they took off the dirty jackets off of the children to wash them, Marinette noticed a photo fall out of Emma's jacket pocket. It was a photo of Emma's family, they were standing in front of the Eiffel Tower and Marinette noticed how they all looked so happy. A smiling Louis was standing in the middle with his body slightly diagonal to the camera because Hugo was on his back holding a peace sign to the camera with a wide smile. Emma was standing in front of Louis with her arms outstretched in a wide gesture displaying her jazz hands. Marinette and Adrien's eyes focused on who they assumed were their parents standing right beside them, smiling with them. The mom held her head close to Louis' on his left side, posing with Hugo and Louis while the dad was on Louis' other side and doing a similar jazz hand gesture to Louis and there was writing on the picture on the lower left corner that read: Happy 15th Birthday Louis Agreste! We Love You!
Marinette gasped as she looked closer at the parents and she realized who they were. The parents' resemblance were uncanny to Adrien and Marinette, they looked just like an older version of them. Marinette looked at the dad's blond hair and emerald green eyes, " Adrien... they're..." Marinette noticed the mom's bluebell eyes and dark blueberry hair, "This is us isn't it?" Adrien felt his heart break when he read the message on the photo, looking at Louis' smiling face. It was the boy's 15th birthday and now he's dead. It also struck so much harder as Marinette said those words because it was starting to occur to Adrien that Louis was his son and he had died to Gabriel Agreste, his father. The twins' kwamis looked at the photo and they remembered when they had taken that photo: it was on the day of the Future Past.
"Fawkes, Naga, this... is us in the future isn't it?" Adrien didn't dare pick up the picture on account of what happened last time they had touched a photo that didn't belong in this time. Fawkes and Naga couldn't look at Adrien in the eyes, but they continued to look at the once happy photo with a somber expression. The young man took that silence as his answer and he looked at Hugo and Emma with an unbearable sadness as Adrien finally realized where that unknown sense of attachment was coming from. Adrien was their father, and his son and daughter were here right in front of him and they were suffering. Marinette leaned closer and lied down next to Hugo's small body and she shakily brought a hand up to touch Hugo's dark blueberry hair. She suppressed a sob as she examined the boy's face, color was slowly returning to his face and he seemed to be a bit more peaceful than he was earlier.
"How did I not realize it? Hugo," Marinette rested her hand on the boy's cheek and caressed her cheek with her thumb, "Louis and Emma. Those were the names I chose if I were to ever have kids with..." Marinette's words died on her lips, realizing that she didn't want to finish that sentence, but Adrien understood. Marinette snuck a quick glance over at Adrien to find him smiling warmly at her, but it had an air of sadness to it. Subconsciously, Adrien brought his hand over to his daughter's to hold her petite hand in his and rubbed it soothingly. Suddenly, with a surge of courage, Adrien picked up the picture and he felt memories of when the picture was taken flooding into his head. One thing that he noticed was that these memories were from the dad's perspective.
On Louis' birthday (15 years in the future) from Future Adrien's POV
Louis had seemed fine for most of today. After the situation from a few days ago with Nathalie, Louis had put on this happy persona and pretended as if everything was fine. It was as if Louis was back to his normal self, almost. My son's a good actor, but even though his smile reaches his eyes, I could his mind was elsewhere. Louis had kept his mouth shut after that incident, not spilling a single detail about what was coming and even though he had promised to tell me when the time was right, I was beginning to think that day would never come. Today was Louis' birthday, and from what I gathered about Louis' situation, his death is supposed to be today. I noticed that he kept staring at the Eiffel Tower throughout the day when we were all out celebrating his birthday, and I assumed that something important would happen there. I felt like I was slowly losing my mind over the fact that my son could die at any time. Whatever my father was planning, I couldn't let it come to pass. Louis had begged me and Marinette not to go looking for answers because it would just make matters worse. At one point in their birthday excursion, Louis had said that he wanted to be alone with Glacies for a moment to talk and I saw them both staring at the Eiffel Tower. I couldn't help but want to listen in as Marinette took Hugo and Emma to a street festival that was just a ways away from the Eiffel Tower at the Champs Élysées.
"Louis... you've done well faking it this entire time, but how are you really feeling?" Glacies asked, taking a glance at his wielder who he noticed that the shine was gone from his eyes and Louis was just blankly staring at the Eiffel Tower.
"What do you mean by faking it? I've been happy, I'm... I'm not afraid," Louis said, his voice quiet.
"I could tell you were thinking about the Future Past the entire time, you can talk to me," Glacies reassured Louis and the boy bit his lip for a second before sighing, "it's ok if you're not happy and it's natural to be afraid."
"Of course I'm happy, I get to spend my birthday with my family. I'm sad because today might be my last and there are people who are glad that is the case. Makes me wonder how messed up this world is," Louis murmured, tilting his head back to look at the sky for a moment, taking note of the pink, orange, and yellow hues of the sky that were starting to get deeper. The sun was setting on Paris, and it was setting on the lives of everyone in Paris, "but I chose to be happy today because this is the last time I will ever be at peace with my family. All of us joyful and laughing and having a good time. I'm going to cherish this..." I felt like every syllable of his words added an extra weight on my heart, until it was unbearable. As his father, knowing that there was almost nothing I could do for him in his time of need was crippling.
"Lou, we made a promise that we would make it through this together, you still intend on it right?" Glacies wondered if Louis already gave up, because it seemed as if Louis was already halfway there. Louis stopped looking at the sky to look at his kwami and smiled at him. It wasn't one of his million dollar smiles that he's always known, but it was a warm smile that seem repressed in a way. However, it still gave him comfort.
"Of course, I'm not giving up. It's just hard not to feel overwhelmed by it all. But I promise you that I intend to win," Glacies noticed Louis' face harden into a stoic expression, all traces of his wistfulness and happiness gone. His face was determined and he looked back at the Eiffel Tower in all of its glory. I drew my gaze towards the Eiffel Tower and we could all see the sun starting to lower in the sky more, its rays shining through the steel beams of the tower, "Glacies do you know what my dream is?"
My eyes widened sightly at the question and Glacies looked towards him questioningly, but Louis didn't expect an answer form him and continued to talk, "My dream... is that I want my family to live in a Paris where we can be as angry as we want, as sad as we want, as happy as we want without having to worry about being taken over by darkness. I want everyone to live in a world where they can trust themselves again. Cause what kind of world are we living in where we're scared to even feel negative things? Negative feelings are not weakness and we shouldn't have to feel afraid. Our feelings are one of humanity's closest possessions and knowing that Gabriel is taking advantage of that, weaponizing feelings as if it's a weakness. It makes me sick!" Louis gritted his teeth, saying that a little louder than he intended to. I watched my son with a strange sense of pride that he has this much passion towards a noble dream. It was just a swirling storm of emotions of love, pride, and empathy. However, I could tell that there was more than just that noble dream underneath, a darker intention. I have faith that my boy can achieve that dream, and I want to be there beside him to realize it. Something does tell me that dream of his will come to odds with my father's dream to create a perfect world with my mom.
Glacies looked at Louis a little longer before speaking, "Louis, I promise that I will make that dream of yours a reality. I want to live in a world full of happiness and possibility with humanity and my fellow kwamis, that was my hope before I went to sleep... and now you saved me from an eternity of loneliness. The least I can do is realize our dream together," Glacies raised his tiny paw to make it seem like he was swearing his promise and Louis let out a little chuckle. Those two always had complete faith and trust in each other. Their bond was something of which I had never seen, even with Plagg or his mom with Tikki.
"Louis! Take a look at this!" Louis turned around to find Hugo running towards him with their mom and Emma following behind. Hugo was holding two sparklers that he got from the festival and he held one out to Louis, "Isn't this so cool?" Louis took the sparkler and smiled at the sentiment. Louis held up the sparkler, trying to catch each spark with his eyes, attempting to memorize where each one flies. His smile grew wider as he held out his sparkler to Hugo, who jumped around him, laughing with own sparkler.
"So cool," Louis joked as Emma joined in on the fun and Marinette and I watched our kids play around amidst the roaming crowd that was also sightseeing that day. After another moment, I heard a voice from behind me and I turned around to find an elderly man with a polaroid camera.
"Excuse me monsieur, but do you mind if I take a photo of your family?" The elderly man asked as I turned to look at my children, who stopped to look at me and the man with interest, "You can keep the photo of course, but I believe it's these moments that need to be immortalized with a polaroid." The elderly man smiled warmly at the children, who smiled at the prospect at getting their picture taken. I nodded at them in acknowledgement and bounded over to Louis's side.
"Of course we'd love for you to take our picture," My wife answered and I heard Hugo and Louis discussing their poses and suddenly Hugo got behind Louis and jumped on his back, using one arm to clutch onto his brother's frame tightly. Louis grunted in surprise and laughed as he steadied himself and caught his brother's legs around his waist. I watched as Louis turned to give Hugo a knowing smile with the younger giving a cheeky grin back. Marinette came over to Louis' side to nuzzle into Hugo and Louis' combined pose. Emma and I came in on the other side and I looked at the elderly man in confirmation as the man raised his camera at us. Having an idea, I leaned down to whisper into Emma's ears and I saw her light up with a bubbly glint and we both brandished our arms in a jazz hand formation, shaking our hands towards the birthday boy.
"Alright then, in three, two, one," The elderly man said, a smile evident in his voice.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOUIS!" Emma and I shouted out as Louis fought his urge to look at me in bewilderment as he and Hugo were looking at the camera. I heard Marinette laugh and Louis and Hugo held their sparklers out the camera and we all heard the photo being snapped. After another moment, the elderly man turned the camera around to wait for the polaroid. The photo slid out of the camera and walked over to me to hand it over. I grasped the photo in the my hand, waving it a little to get it to develop. I could see my beautiful wife Marinette and my sons' smiling faces and Emma and I doing our goofy poses. I looked over at my family, with Louis carrying Hugo to where I was and leaning in to get a good look along with Marinette and Emma.
"This... this is everything," I sighed breathlessly as I looked up at the man and smiled brightly at the elderly man, "Thank you, thank you so much," I held out my hand to shake his, which he took and he waved it off like it was not a problem.
"It was my pleasure, it was a real treat photographing your family, I hope you enjoy," The elderly man nodded and walked away as I handed Louis the photo and he marveled at it, his thumb stroking the image.
"A polaroid is kinda romantic isn't it? Knowing that it's the only photo of us in this moment in the entire world?" Louis asked absentmindedly and I couldn't help but smile at the fact that he takes after me so much when it comes to romanticism. I was about to say something when Marinette chimed in, resting her chin on Louis' shoulder, looking at the photo with him.
"You know when I first dated your father, he always took polaroids at every single date he took me out on," Marinette revealed, causing Louis to turn his head slightly towards his mom, looking at her with an amused expression, "he always liked to call it a 'physical memory,' he was honestly such a hopeless romantic," Marinette laughed and raised her head so she could look at me with a teasing grin.
"Really?" Louis let out a laugh and looked towards me. I could hear Hugo and Emma giggling and I looked away in embarrassment before my wife could tease me any further.
"Yeah yeah, you act as if you found it annoying when you secretly loved it," I shot back and crossed my arms to challenge her slightly in an equally teasing manner. I saw Marinette's eyes soften and smiled at me warmly. It was always that smile that got me to melt every single time I saw it.
"You're not wrong, I still love it," Marinette glanced towards the polaroid and back towards me and we stared at each for a few moments, our gazes full of love until our son snapped us out of it with a jokingly disgusted tone of voice.
"Guys it's my birthday, can you save your flirting for the bedroom please? Some of us here are hopelessly single," Louis stepped through us and shook his head but I could tell he was smiling. Marinette gasped his implication and blushed and I couldn't help but chuckle slightly at my wife.
"They always get like this whenever something remotely romantic happens," Hugo gave a small smirk towards us and I saw the teasing glint in his eye. Hugo also looked like none of this was a surprise to him, almost like a deadpan face. I just found it so hilarious for some reason, seeing that look on my son's face.
"Wait, Lou, I thought you and Elena were-" Emma started but Louis quickly shushed her, a blush on his face.
"We don't talk about that," Louis said quickly and I could feel my inner Cheshire find its way to the surface as I started to grin like a maniac and Louis paled at the look on my face.
"You and Elena?" I asked incredulously and Louis shook his head in a desperate attempt to deny it, but I knew otherwise. Both Marinette and I knew that there was something going on between the two of them, but we never wanted to pry much into it. Marinette had told me that her and Elena had a long talk about him and her feelings, but hearing all of this from the other perspective reminded me of how oblivious I was to my wife's affections.
"Dad, leave it," Louis warned as I came closer and teased him about it, poking his sides and Louis squirming his way out of it. I saw Marinette smile knowingly out of the corner of her eye and I wrapped an arm around my son's shoulder and looked at the Polaroid photo one last time. I felt Louis' head lean into my shoulder a little as we both smiled at the photo. I hope that we can get past whatever Louis is facing so we can more moments exactly like this. Louis... all I ever wanted was for you to be happy, and it is my hope that you can go on without worrying about the shadows that the light casts. You are an incredible light that shines in the darkest of days and I have faith that it won't go out. Not my son. I know you Louis, I know you'll be able to do it. I love you, and I wish I was there to see you finish things myself. Maybe I will, but that's up to the future to decide.
