Town

There was always a question among mortals as to whether Hades named the town after himself, or the realm as a whole. The answer, in truth, was a bit of both—respect for his realm, and pride in his status as king.

Like most towns, it grew in stages. Persephone had complained that the Underworld, while exciting and new at first, had lost some of its appeal. The shades milled about, directionless, for a majority of the time, and she reminded her husband that up top people had places to live and things to see when boredom set in.

Hades, understanding her request and thinking it reasonable, had set to work. In due time the shades, under his direction, had built a small but thriving town. As Hadestown expanded, as its riches grew, Hades shared lofty dreams of a city to rival Olympus.

Soon doubt crept in and the shades began to work harder, walls rising and wages falling, and the mortals came just the same.

Persephone would often wonder what had happened to the town they'd worked on, and if anything could bring back the old dream.

Hades, however, looked at his realm and was content.
