Girl

Orpheus sang for the love of a girl, and Persephone felt it deep in her bones. She knew the pain he felt deeply because, long ago, Hades sang the same kind of song for her.

It was the first time she had to go back to the surface since their marriage, and she was a young girl still—the mortals called her a maiden, and she supposed they were right. But she was married to her job as well as her husband, and she'd told him, as kindly as she could, that she'd be back when her six months were over.

Hades, heart bursting with affection and longing for the beautiful girl, sang her a song of love.

She remembered it over the spring and summer months, humming it as she and her mother worked in the fields. When she came back for fall and winter, the maiden sang the song of love right back to Hades, and the Underworld's halls were filled with joy and contentment.

Persephone only wished the song of love and the girl she once was could reach him again.
