Chapter 4: August 31st
Over the last few days in Grimmauld Place, Harry could not help but notice Sirius hadn't been as happy as he had put up on the front when they first heard the news.
"Don't you go feeling guilty," said Hermione sternly, "you belong to Hogwarts and Sirius knows it. Personally, I think he's being selfish."
"That's a bit harsh," said Ron, "you wouldn't want to be stuck inside this house without any company."
"He'll have company!" said Hermione. And when Mrs. Weasley entered the bedroom, they then proceeded to talk about feeling like a house-elf (Ron), and SPEW (Hermione).
On the very last day of the holidays, guess who was screaming at the top of their lungs to wake Harry up. Hint: it's not Mrs. Black nor Mrs. Weasley.
"Harry, wake up! Wake up!" Judai jumped up and down his bed, "it's August 31st!"
"I know..." murmured Harry, opening his eyes slowly, "what's of it?"
"Today's my birthday! I'm 7 now!" cheered Judai excitedly.
"Happy Birthday..." said Harry groggily, turning back to sleep.
Judai beamed and continued his mission to bug the other occupants of the house.
Later when Harry went down for breakfast only to meet a fussing Mrs. Weasley over a laughing Judai.
"Oh dear, you should have told us, I would have prepared something," Mrs. Weasley said to herself, "well, I could bring you to Diagon Alley later to get something."
Judai beamed happily, "may I have a new booster pack?"
"What is that-?" Mrs. Weasley asked, then she noticed Harry, "Ah Harry, come and have some breakfast."
"Thanks Mrs. Weasley," Harry said as he sat down beside Judai. He turned to Judai, "so it's your birthday huh? Happy Birthday!"
Judai beamed. The kid seemed to have an endless supply of positive energy, Harry mused. He hadn't forgotten what he had found out in that courtroom, but when he brought it up with Ron and Hermione, they had told him he was being too paranoid.
"Maybe that is just how he copes with all of this?" Hermione theorised, because that's what she always did, "maybe he does not want to acknowledge how bad things had gone yet?"
"Yeah," Ron agreed, "the kid is kind of slow in the head, maybe his brain hasn't caught up yet?", he snickered. Hermione shot Ron a glare at his suggestion.
Harry hadn't been convinced, but he let the problem go.
Returning to the present, Judai was laughing at a story the twins were telling. The table had filled out more as more had come down for breakfast.
They were chatting comfortably with each other when the owls came, bringing the new booklists, and the news that Ron and Hermione had been chosen as the new Gryffindor prefects. Mrs. Weasley was so happy that she agreed to buy Ron a new broom, and then after that she burst out of the kitchen, which Harry guessed was to notify Mr. Weasley who hadn't been there.
Harry caught himself feeling jealous that Ron had been chosen and not him, and it made him feel very guilty for thinking so. He wasn't better than Ron at anything bar Quidditch, so he shouldn't feel that way at all!
When Sirius confirmed that both he and Dad hadn't been prefects either, Harry's mood was eventually lifted.
And that's when he noticed someone other than him who hadn't been very lively since the news had come.
"What's wrong?" Harry whispered.
Judai looked up at him, started. "Nothing! I'm super happy for Mrs. Weasley!" he stammered, and then after a moment, he hesitantly whispered back to Harry, "I just realised that Mrs. Weasley isn't really Mum." His voice cracked a little at the end.
Ah, Harry thought he understood how Judai felt. No matter how Mrs. Weasley said that she thought of him as one of her sons, there will always be this invisible barrier that separated them. That's why Harry had been so happy to have Sirius, because he was his.
Maybe Hermione was right, as she always was. Maybe Judai just hadn't come to term with his parents' death yet. And today was the first birthday he spent without his family, too. The realisation must have hit hard.
He took Judai's hand in his and tightened his hold comfortingly, in a silent message that he, too, understood.
But that was not enough for Judai, as he jumped off the chair and dragged Harry with him into an empty room. Then Judai jumped onto Harry, hugging him tightly as he cried.
Harry's hands hovered uncertainly at first, but settled to pat Judai's back softly. He thought he saw someone checking on them, but they soon left to give them some privacy.
"I miss Mum and Dad."
"I know."
"It's my fault that they're dead."
Harry frowned. "It's not," he said firmly. Whatever reason Judai had cooked up that it had somehow been because of him was sure to be wrong.
"It is," Judai insisted. So they were playing that game huh?
"No, it's not," Harry calmly said again.
When Judai opened his mouth to claim it had been his fault again, Harry said quickly, cutting him off, "no, listen to me, Judai." As he gained Judai's attention, Harry continued, "you weren't there, so in no way it could have been your fault."
"Yes!" argued Judai stubbornly, "because I wasn't there," he stressed, "I shouldn't have got lost, then they wouldn't have to go to find me."
"Do you even listen to yourself?" said Harry, "you got lost, you couldn't have helped it."
"Yes I could!" said Judai, "because I haven't gone to that alley by accident!"
"What?"
"Nothing!" Judai said, and he quickly untangled their limbs and ran out of the room, leaving Harry sitting there alone, speechless.
Harry decided against telling Ron and Hermione what had happened in that room, because he felt that it was between him and Judai. But he mentally added that morning to the list of the reasons why Judai was suspicious.
That afternoon, they spent time retrieving their books and belongings from all over the house. It's odd how widely their possessions seemed to be able to scatter themselves during their stay here.
Mrs. Weasley and Judai returned from Diagon Alley around six. She was carrying the books and Ron's new broomstick packet, while Judai carried his new wizarding toy, because they couldn't afford to go to Muggle London with how little time they had. Even though he got no new cards, Judai still looked happy enough.
When their eyes met though, instead of beaming like usual, Judai turned away from Harry's gaze. At least the kid didn't pretend this morning hadn't happened.
They held the party down the basement, with two big banners hung over the table, which read 'CONGRATULATIONS RON AND HERMIONE - NEW PREFECTS' and 'HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY, JUDAI'.
After dinner, Harry followed Mad-Eye as he showed him the picture of the original Order, which made him very uncomfortable. Luckily, Sirius came, and Harry was able to slip out.
That was when Harry heard the crying sound from the drawing-room. His stomach turned at the thought the crying one was Ron, or Judai. But it turned out to be Mrs. Weasley, and before her was the boggart which kept turning into the Weasleys', and then Harry's, corpses.
Luckily, the others arrived, so the boggart was swiftly handled.
But the horror and fear of the war had been enough to keep Harry sleep uneasily that night.
Author's note: This chapter is short. And Judai still manages to mess it up for me.
Really tho, this was supposed to be a heart-warming chapter, with everyone comforting my baby Judai who just lost his parents, but no, he had to run out of the room.
But that was fine, I can handle this.
And then the crying-to-Harry-alone!part was supposed to make Harry less suspicious of Judai, but no my baby had to go and ruin it again!
At least I can still make Harry keep silent. If the Golden Trio turns the full distrusting mode on my baby, I would be super sad.
Well, in the grand scheme of things, this changes nothing, but still... I'm the author, they shouldn't do this to me!
