Earth

Persephone loved the earth, the feel of soil under her feet and in her hands as she planted crops and seeds. As the goddess of spring, she was naturally in tune with plants, flowers, and the earth beneath them, and she knew she made her mother proud.

When Hades took her down below she felt the earth in a different way. Deep in the heart of the Underworld, there was no sun to shine, but she was nothing if not persistent. From the craggy rocks and tough soil, Persephone managed to make pomegranate trees grow. Her husband had stood there in awe at the trees, and the first fruit that grew was one they both shared.

If only it could have stayed that way.

Now Persephone poured herself a drink, mixed with her strongest grains, and hoped Hades' industry, his digging and dredging, wouldn't hurt the earth any more than it already had. Even as she swallowed, she knew it was wishful thinking.
