This one is based on the concept album, where Orpheus sings If It's True before getting beat up in Papers and hasn't had time to search for Eurydice before the Fates intercept him with Nothing Changes.
Truth
He hears the voices ringing in his ears, hears them say point-blank that nothing he's done mattered—Eurydice is gone, the Fates sing, and there's nothing Orpheus can do about it.
He doesn't want to believe it; he's barely arrived, barely begun his search. But the Fates show him Eurydice's eyes, glassy and blank like the shades he's seen, and Orpheus's heart sinks with the truth of their words.
If it's true, he thinks, there's no point in going on. Hades can have them both; he'll have a canary for his mines and a poet to sing sweet half-truths to placate his workers, and Hadestown will go on as it has.
But the word if stops his heart briefly, and in the middle of his lament Orpheus's heart surges with hope. Who are they, he thinks, to say what's true and what isn't? He hasn't yet tried to reach out, has only just found her. If the Fates stand in his way, he'll challenge them, and if Hades himself blocks his path, he'll sing.
And only then, if his efforts fail, will Orpheus accept their words are true.
