Nicole wasn't happy. Not only has she been sorted into a different house than Harry, she's been sorted into Slytherin, the house with the worst reputation. She wasn't sure if she could handle it. She would barely see Harry, and they'll make different friends, if she makes any friends at all.
She hoped that the house wasn't as bad as everyone says it is, and that the fact that the person who killed her parents doesn't represent the whole house. The feast had begun, and it looked great. She sat next to two girls, but then noticed she was also sitting opposite Draco Malfoy and his two friends.
"So, Nicole, eh?" he said. "Happy to be here?"
"Dunno," Nicole said. "Depends if you make me feel welcome."
"You won't get any welcoming feelings from him," said the girl Nicole saw on the train.
"Quiet, Moon!" Draco said. "Give the girl a break. She's obviously been through a lot. Being raised by muggles and that."
"Well, Draco," said another girl, sitting to the left side of her. "How do you know that she was raised by muggles?"
"Do you know who she is, Pansy?" Draco questioned.
"Yes, I heard her name called out," Pansy answered. "Related to Harry Potter."
"I'm his twin sister, specifically," Nicole said.
"Why have I never heard of you?" Pansy asked. "Did Voldemort try and kill you too?"
"Pansy!" shouted the Moon girl.
"What?" Pansy said. "Don't tell me you're afraid of the name, Lily."
"I'm not," Lily said. "Just others might be. Nicole for example. He killed her parents."
"I'm not scared," Nicole said, already feeling like no one was listening to her.
"We're Slytherins," Pansy said. "He was one of our own." He also killed a lot of people. "Not to condone his actions or anything, but we should at least not be scared."
"The teachers might hear!" Lily said.
"She's got a point," Draco said. "Do you want to get into trouble on your first day? I certainly don't."
"Fine," Pansy said. "Now, as I was saying before you interrupted me…"
"Hey," said a girl, coming up to them. "I've just been sorted. Can I sit here? I don't know what to do." The girl, brown-haired, looked incredibly nervous and spoke with such a tired voice.
"Sophie Roper," Draco said. "I heard your name called out. Pleased to meet you."
"Thanks," said the girl just coming in.
"You can sit next to me," Lily said. "Well done."
"The reason you've never heard of me," said Nicole, finally answering Pansy's question, "Was because You-Know-Who never tried to kill me. Harry defeated him before he could get to me. I was nothing but a witness. The girl who was there."
"Well, you're the one in Slytherin," Draco said. "So you must be doing something right."
"What does it matter what house she's in?" asked Lily.
"Houses are a symbol of who you are," Pansy said. "Well, at least they should be. You're different. You live in the only pure-blood family that never knows what house they're going to be in."
"That's because we don't have a staple house," Lily said. "Moons are splattered around the place. It can be annoying, but the element of surprise is quite fun."
Sophie stayed still. She obviously wasn't saying anything.
"Did you know what house you were going to be in?" Pansy asked.
"No," Nicole said. "I had no idea."
"Great, so we have something in common," said Lily.
"So what was it like?" Draco continued to ask. "Being raised by muggles and all?"
Draco's two friends, sitting either side of him were being completely silent. It was like they needed Draco's permission to speak.
"Awful," Nicole said. "My aunt and uncle were the worst guardians ever. They gave my cousin everything, and me and Harry nothing. Absolutely no one was nice to us. Honestly, when we got that letter, it was the best day of our lives."
"So they treated you like crap because you were a witch and wizard?"
"Looks like it," Nicole answered. "Turns out they knew all along and thought we were weird!"
"What do you know about magic?" Draco asked. "Anything?"
"Only what we read through those books before," said Nicole.
Albus Dumbledore stood up. He was beaming at the students with his arms open wide. Draco scoffed. Lily stared.
"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"
"What an idiot," Draco said.
"He is a bit mad," Lily said.
"A bit? How did we get him for headmaster? Right, Tracy? Right, Millicent?"
The two girls sitting next to Pansy nodded in unison.
"Ah, food's here," Draco said. "First meal here. Come on, you two, you love food!"
Draco's two friends, Crabbe and Goyle finally got up and started taking all the food from the middle.
"Great, I'm starving!" Nicole said. Nicole saw so many stuff everywhere: roast chicken, roast beef, pork and lamb chops, sausages, steak, bacon, fries, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, peas, carrots, gravy and for some reason, peppermint humbugs.
The Dursleys would've never let her eat as much as this! She just hoped Harry was having a good time as she did.
Then, what looked like a ghost, covered in blood, came over to the table.
"Hello," the ghost said. "So is this new first-years here?"
"You must be the Bloody Baron," said Draco. "My father's told me about you."
"So you're Lucius' son, eh?" he said. "Good to meet you. Looks like a good feast. Ah, you're the girl I saw in the sorting. Related to Harry Potter, right?"
"No," Nicole lied. "I'm completely new."
"She is," Pansy said. "Her twin sister."
"Why are you covered in blood?" Lily asked.
"I don't talk about that, miss…"
"Moon, Lily Moon."
"Finally got a Moon in Slytherin," said the Baron. "Been at least 2 generations since that happened."
"I'll catch you up on what's happening with my father," Draco said.
So Draco talked to the Baron about his dad for a while, and then Nicole started to be asked questions again.
"So, what's Harry like?" asked Pansy. "Does he really have that scar?"
"Yes, it's shaped like lightning," said Nicole. "Looks very appropriate."
"How big is it?" Lily asked.
How big is the scar? Really? Are people really asking this? "Not really that big," Nicole said, not really knowing how to answer.
"So how do you and Harry get along?" Lily asked.
"Oh, we're as close as can be," Nicole said.
"Must be weird not being in the same house then," Pansy commented.
"Yup, it does feel like it's going to be quite hard," said Nicole.
Nicole looked up at the front (she wanted to just not answer any more questions), as she saw Professor McGonagall talking to Professor Dumbledore, and Professor Quirrell, in his turban, was talking to a teacher with greasy black hair, a hooked nose and sallow skin. He started to curiously look at Nicole like he'd seen a ghost, and then turn away.
"Who's that teacher talking to Professor Quirrell?" Nicole asked, confused.
"Severus Snape," said an older boy, who looked like he was in his fourth or fifth year or something. "He teaches Potions. But he shouldn't. He would be a way better Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher than that blabbering idiot Quirrell. He knows much more about it."
"He's a good friend of our family," Draco said. "Never actually met him though. Father says he likes to keep to himself."
"He was looking at me," said Nicole.
"Probably surprised you're in Slytherin," Pansy said. "Considering your family history. James and Lily, both Gryffindors. James' parents, also Gryffindors, and if you keep going, it never stops. Gryffindor, Gryffindor, Gryffindor. You're first Slytherin in generations."
"Always nice for a change, right?" Lily said.
"You're a Moon!" Pansy said.
"Who cares?" shouted Lily.
At last, the deserts too disappeared, and Professor Dumbledore got to his feet again. The hall fell silent.
"Ahem – just a few more words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you. First years should note that the forest on the ground is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well."
"Wonder who he's talking about," said the older boy.
"I have also been asked by Mr. Filch, the caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors.
"Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anybody interested in playing for their house teams should contact Madame Hooch."
"That's where I need to go," said Draco.
"And finally, I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to anyone who does not wish to die a very painful death."
"Is he serious?" asked Nicole.
"Probably," said the older boy. "Oh, by the way I'm Chase Cobrack. You're the girl related to Harry Potter, aren't you?"
"Yes," Nicole said. "And to be honest, I'm getting sick of people asking me about that."
"And now before we go to bed, let us sing the school song!" Dumbledore said, who gave his wand a little flick, and a long golden ribbon flew out of it, which rose high above the tables and twisted itself, snakelike, into words.
"Everyone pick their favourite tune," said Dumbledore. "And off we go!"
Then they started to sing a ridiculous song in many different tunes, which was about how much Hogwarts was teaching. Everyone finished at different times. It was truly a bizarre song.
"Ah, music," Dumbledore said. "A magic beyond all we do here! And now, bedtime. Off you trot!"
"That guy's insane," Draco said. "Only here for a few hours and I can already tell everything my father told me about him was true."
"Same," Pansy said.
Nicole assumed Draco & Pansy knew each other already, considering they seem to know each other well. A sixth year led the way to a portrait, where they stopped, as they then said a password: "Pure-blood" is what the sixth year said.
Nicole wondered exactly what that meant.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Potter, Moon, Pansy," said Draco.
"Bye Draco," said Pansy.
The prefect directed Nicole and the other first year girls to a dormitory on the right, including Lily, Pansy, that girl Sophie Roper, and a few others.
A girl came up to Nicole. "Hey…"
"Yes, yes, I'm the girl related to Harry Potter!" Nicole freaked out. "Feel free to ask me one hundred stupid questions about him and not myself!"
"I wasn't going to," said the girl. "I never cared about stuff like that, although I did know who you are. Twin sister, right?"
"Yes," said Nicole. "The Girl Who was There."
"Daphne," the girl said, getting her hand out to shake it. "Daphne Greengrass."
The girl's dormitory was small for seven children. There was a lot there. But Nicole didn't have a good first day at all. She just hoped Harry was having a better time than her as she drifted off to sleep, for the first time without her twin brother Harry next to her.
