Chapter 5
Well it took me less than a yeah to update again that is a win in my book. Since I may not get any other stories updated before the day comes. Happy Thanksgiving.
"You look exhausted," Sonya says as she and Mandy sat at a table. They were meeting up to unwind and talk a bit. "Running the DA's office is running me. I can't wait for the election. Than I get back to what I do best instead of having to tell everyone else what to do. You know how hard it is to see a case I know I can win and have to hand it off," Mandy says. "Well just a few more weeks. New DA and a likely a new mayor. And then whole sale changes to NYPD," Sonya says. "Speaking of the NYPD. What is the latest on Intelligence?" Mandy asked. "Nothing good. Roode still hasn't been cleared to return, Gargano is still taking time off. But Michaels won't bring anyone new on because he's trying to hold his team together has, he had it. Word has it Morgan has thrown in the towel," Sonya. "Riley Morgan doesn't seem like the type to throw in the towel," Mandy tells her. "More like he's accepted he is off the team. He might want to leave. I managed to talk to Neese. That guy thinks Morgan is still struggling with what Ambrose did. Now Gargano might be gone. Seems like he is doing all he can to close cases before any transfer takes place," Sonya explains. Mandy looks around to make sure no one is listening to hear. "Well I met with Porter when all this stuff with Gargano and Ciampia was going on. He made it clear that if he is mayor the NYPD won't have a place for the Riley Morgan's of the world," Mandy says.
"Given we tried to put him in jail this might sound strange what I am about to says. But it doesn't seem right this is how it ends for him. Either transferred into some nothing post or using some lope hole to force him out," Sonya says. "It's going to sound even stranger I agree. But if Morgan can follow the law this is the next best thing to him in jail," Mandy says. Sonya wanted to change the subject. "So is your niece still coming this weekend?" Sonya asks. "Yes am I am so happy to have some Aunt Mandy time.
The Next Day
To most people Riley was just some guy who worked for the city charged with picking up stray trash near the soccer fields. Holding his bucket and claw Riley moved into position. "Target is approaching from west side," Keith said over the radio. Riley glanced over at Dana who was by the bleachers dressed in her soccer mom best. "I see them," Dana says. "Remember we don't move in until we have both the husband and wife willing to make a deal," Shawn says. Everyone understood. "Still can't believe two doctors would be selling pain killers," Mickie says. "You seen the debts these two racked up. I'm mor shocked they aren't selling more," Riley says. "The real key is we have to get them to turn over who at the companies are supplying them the oxy," Shawn reminds them. Riley took a step back he needed to be close but if the kept moving in it might scare the Vancrofts off.
The wife was named Nina she had been the one Dana had made contact with under the guise of a being the wife of a stock broker who needed some help due to a shoulder injury. The Vancrofts had at one point been deep in debt even with there private practice. Thus they had started to deal to upper middle class. When most people thought of drug dealers it was some guy on a street corner or some pusher in a suit dealing high end things. This was somewhere between. Hopefully it would be an easy bust a win in the books. "I've tried just about everything even acupuncture," Dana says over the radio. "That eastern crap never works," The husband Douglas can be heard saying through the wire. "I just need something to get through the day," Dana says. "We understand," Nina says. Riley put his bucket down he had a feeling the magic words were about to be said. Sure enough Douglas made mention of being willing to provide some pills for a price. They were so arrogant to talk about in public. "Move in!" Shawn says. It took less than a minute. The Vancrofts were stunned. For the first time in a while things went according to plan.
Prison
"This is bullshit!" Randy Orton complained. "Randy what can I tell you the wheel of justice moves slow sometimes," His new attorney Johnny Ace says. The guy's voice annoyed Orton. "So my hearing gets pushed back again. I want my day in court. What happened to right to a speedy trail?" Randy ranted. But what he was thinking was, "I want my chance to get away. I want my chance to kill that damn cop," "Randy I understand. But the judge has ruled the case is moving forward in a timely manner," Ace claimed. "So nothing we can do?' Orton asked. "I am afraid not. I'll file the motions of course. But I can take those letters you were asking about," Johnny says. That got Randy to smile. If he couldn't get free he could put something else in motion.
Time Square Saturday Afternoon
Mandy held onto here niece's hand. It was a busy day with tons of people around. Still it was a good day. She loved her time with Jennifer. The girl was now eleven just between being a child and a teen. "I can't believe you get to live here," Jennifer says. "Well I don't live in Time Square," Mandy says with a laugh. "You live in New York the real city. I live in Buffalo," Jennifer complains. "Ah here it is," Mandy says seeing the clothes store she was looking for. "So you mom is going to kill me but we are getting you a full outfit," Mandy says. "I won't object," Jennifer says.
"We sure they are the right ones?" The first man says. "Its her. Amanda or Mandy Rose the acting DA and her niece," the second man says. "How did they know they would be there?" The first man asks. "Hell, if I know. Someone has connections. Now just be smart," The second man says. Inside the store Mandy was with a clerk. "Oh Miss Rose I checked your order is in just mention it when you check out." "Thank you, Peyton," Mandy says. Peyton looks at Jennifer who is checking out a blouse and skirt. "If you want to try it on we have a room in the back." "Pick a few out before you do that. We want to get the one that looks best on you," Mandy adds. The door opens and two rather large men come in. Mandy got a bad feeling. She had been in law long enough to read people. "Hey Peyton you might to keep an eye on those guys who just came in," Mandy whispers.
Another employee went up to them and Mandy relaxed a bit. "This one is so cool," Jennifer says. Madison's phone rings. "Its work. I promise I will make it quick," Mandy says. Jennifer just nods. "Vic it's my one day off this whole month and the courts are closed. What can it be?" Mandy says. "Mandy you are the only one that can approve this. I need to go to Texas. An old cold case just got hot. Remember that Triple Homicide in Long Island. The Coperate Kane case they called. He turned up in Texas," Here ADA explains. "Let me guess they want to stick a needle in his arm before we can hold trail up here. You got my approval go," Mandy says. They wrap up the call. When Mandy turns back around Jennifer isn't there.
"Peyton have you seen my niece?" Mandy asks a bit worried. "Oh I showed her to a changing room," Peyton says. "Which one?" Mandy asks about to head back there. The sound of some kind of scuffle. "Jennifer?" Mandy yells running toward the sound. When she gets get to the area she sees a back door is open. "HELP!" The scrram comes from outside. Mandy goes throug the door and sees a man carry8ing Jennifer dragging her toward a runnign car. "Put her down!" Mandy yells as she charged the big man. With one blow he knocks Mandy away. She tries to get up but can't do it in time. The car drivers over. "UNC 424 UNC 424," she says over and and over as it's licenses plate of the old Toyota SUV pulling away.
Later
"Oh, great Flair is here. The most territorial cop in the NYPD," Riley says as he and Mickie pulled up to the crime scene. "She wants to make Captain," James reminded him. "I am well aware. And she doesn't have to worry about me. I'm happy with the rank of rank of detective. But I don't need to worry about her fraigle ego when a kid is missing," Riley says as he parks. Sure enough Charlotte Flair is on top of them. "Let me make something clear. Intelligence is only here because acting distract attorney Rose requested you. This should be a Special Victims case." "Mickie, you go to talk to Rose I'm check out security cameras we can split other witnesses," Riley says ignoring Flair both out of wanting to put her in her place and knowing it would piss her off he didn't respond to her power play. "You should talk to Rose you have the relationship with her," Mickie says. "Did you not hear me?" Flair asked. "Why are you standing around go interview witnesses," Riley says.
Riley and Mickie walk past a fuming Flair. "The relationship is she tried to put me jail and happened to get kidnapped by my nut job ex partner," Riley says. "Still more than I know her," Mickie says heading for the cameras. Riley sees Mandy sitting a chair clearly upset. She wasn't a DA right now. She was the family member of a kidnapped child. "You actually came," Mandy says when she sees him. The shocks him. Then he recalls what he just said to Mickie. "I'm a cop," Riley says. She had already talked to Flair and her partner but she went over what she knew with Riley. "So, these guys gave you a bad feeling. Did they seem overly interested in your niece?" Riley asks. "No, I thought they might try to shop lift or something. I didn't even notice them going to the changing area," Mandy says upset. "Was there anything could be used to identify them a tattoo or a scar?" Riley asks. "The guy that hit me he had a shaved head but also was letting a beard grow in," Mandy says it all she can think of.
"What do Jennifer's parents do for a living?" Riley asks. "Her dad is a high school teacher and football coach. Her mother is copy writer. If Jennifer was taken to blackmail or extort a family member its me," Mandy says. It made sense she was the acting DA and had a lot of power. He goes through some other basic questions. Riley sees Mickie signally for him. She must of gotten something. Riley tells Mandy he will be right back. To his shock she takes his hand. "I'm about a to be a real hypocrite. I've called you a thug with a badge. I've talked a big game about holdind the police to the law. Now I'm asking you to do whatever it takes to bering Jennifer home safe," Mandy says.
