Chapter 7

So I am going to take a bit of risk here. I'm sure I'm going to get some people going "Wait what?" Well it will be explained. As always I think you for reading. Extra thanks for things like reviews and adding me to lists. Finally Happy New Year! Let's pray 2022 is better than 2021 and so much better than 2020.

One Year Later

Riley poured some coffee into his to go mug. Mandy entered putting on her earnings. "I won't be home tonight looks like it could be another long day in court," she says. "Fine by me knowing this new lieutenant she's going force me redo all my paperwork or find some other way break my balls," Riley says. "I'm sorry," is all Mandy can say. "None of this is your fault. Its all thing I did on my own," Riley says. "I have to go," Mandy says. "Good luck," Riley says. Mandy thanks him before grabbing her briefcase and leaving. Riley puts the lid on his mug and than goes over to a closet and removes his gun from a lock box. He is about to leave the apartment when he stops himself. Turning back he walks to a drawer and pulls out a wedding band and puts it on his finger.

"This is a not a good idea," Shawn says after listening to Riley. They were at the seventy second in his office the door closed. "It might be our only shot. We move quick and we get the kid back," Riley reminds him. "You are assuming you can trust the cartel," Shawn snaps. "If the cartel has already killed Jennifer than they lost there power over Rose. They aren't going to see it coming," Riley says. "And Rose is okay with this?" Shawn asks. "I wanted your approval first but she did say anything to get her niece back," Riley says. "You got it I don't like the idea of Esocbar to have control of a DA," Shawn says.

"Good morning Detective Morgan," the old timer at the front desk greeted him. "Morning, anyone upstairs yet?" "Lieutenant Vega is." All Riley could think was of course she was. It seemed like Vega spent twenty four seven on duty. Heading up to bull pen of the fifteenth precinct Riley got himself ready. Vega was waiting him like a big cat waiting to pounce on prey. "Morning Lieutenant," Riley says. "Morgan how is it I haven't had time to go look at the overnight reports and I'm already dealing with one of your messes," Vega says following him to his desk and throwing an opened letter onto it. "Pretty sure the union has rules about opening another officer's mail. So does the post office," Riley says. "That didn't come through the mail. It was dropped off at the front desk last night. It was addressed to someone in my command," Vega claimed. "Come and get me! We know who sent it. Orton sends me at least one of these since he escaped. Now you the other white shirts and the idiot who is now mayor have made it very clear what you want," Riley says getting mad.

"Watch it Detective," she warns. Riley is about to make another smart remark but the phone in Vega's office starts to ring. She heads into tit it and slams the door. Riley sits at his desk. Checking his e-mail his eye caught the photo of dad on his desk. "I'm trying dad. I know every cop has a role to play. And I know I made the decisions that put me here," He thinks.

Nese handed Riley a belt. "Tracker is in the buckle if you get caught they will just thinks is part of the belt." "Lets hope I don't get caught," Riley says putting the belt on. "I think still say this is a terrible idea," Mickie states. Sonya entrees. "Mandy is ready to go," She states. "So am I. We are just waiting to hear that false paperwork is in place. We have to make sure they are fooled," Riley says. "And what happens if they aren't fooled?" Sonya dares to ask. "You don't want to know," Riley says finally.

"Your honor the defendant was apprehended as he was attempting to start his private jet to fly to Cayman Islands. This is why the term flight risk was invented," Mandy says in front of a court room. "My client was unaware he was facing charges," Alexa Bliss claims. "He had no flight plan registered nor did he have luggage. That sounds more like a man making a desperate escape attempt," Mandy says. "I object," Bliss says right away. The judge bangs his gavel. "I've heard enough. Bail is denied. This court room will take a ten-minute recess," The judge says. Mandy was happy to hear that she needed a break. "Rose you have a minute?" Bliss asks approaching her. "Not if it's about Friedman case," Mandy says. "Oh that we both know how this case will go. Guys like that never want to take a deal," Alexa says. "In that case I am all ears," Mandy says as they head to the hall.

"I heard you and Detective Morgan are married now," Alexa says. "Yes we are. Our anniversary is coming up soon," Mandy says. "Well congratulations. I've also heard he's been reassigned to a less than desirable post," Alexa adds. "Well there were quite a few changes in the NYPD after the new mayor took office. Riley had been with Intelligence a long time," Mandy says. "Well my firm is looking for a new investigator. We want someone who has worked in law enforcement. Riley seems perfect for it," Alexa says. "I will let him know about the job offer. But Riley is what they call true blue NYPD," Mandy claims. "Well we are willing make a very generous offer just have him get in contract with us," Bliss says handing Mandy a card.

In a Car

"Turn left up here," Shawn instructed as Bobby and he drove to a crime scene. "Think this tip is any good?" Bobby asks as he drives down the street trying. The car they were in had a siren but they weren't using it to avoid tipping the suspect off. "Let's hope. Orton killed how many cops the first time he was free? And both those guards," Shawn says. "I just hope these new comers are ready for something like this. I still remember that near miss when he tried to cook us alive," Bobby says. Shawn doesn't reply. That was a day stuck in his mind. He nearly lost his whole team that day. The arrived at the ally way where the rest of the team was waiting. Riley wasn't the only member of the old team that was gone, Johnny Gargno and Keith Lee were out. Officer Sonya Deville had been promoted to the team while Detective Seth Rollins had been transferred from homicide along with another Detective Roman Reigns.

Mickie as ranking officer was running the scene when they arrived. "Look he's in there no reason for us to wait," Shawn heard Roman say. "Yeah let's charge in blind," Shawn says sarcastically. "Sir I just felt we have it confirmed Orton is in the store we need to get him while we have a chance," Roman says trying to defend himself. "The problem Roman is that store is reportedly dealing black market weapons," Mickie says annoyed. "All the more reason we go in and hit hard. Before this guy has time to set up an attack," Seth adds. It was a growing problem. Rollins and Reigns had the same mindset on many things. They also both seemed to think they were running things. "Bobby you and Dana check a premotor. Rollins you and Keith head around back make sure he can't get out that way," Shawn says in a tones that can't be argued with.

"Sarge let me go in there," Roman says. There was a was military surplus store that was reported to be dealing weapons illegally. A tip from an informant had told them Orton had been spotted around the store and looking to get up some rifles. "Sir he know the rest of the team. Let me get in there confirm Orton is still there," Roman says. Shawn knew he had a point. "Alright go in there confirm Orton is there. Do no make contact do not move to apprehend," Shawn says. "Yes sir," Roman says. "Five minutes Roman I want you out of there in five minutes," Shawn orders. Roman nods as he heads for the door. Shawn checked his watch as he updated the others via radio. "Keep you head Reigns don't be a bull in a china shop," Shawn hears Mickie says as she watches the door.

For Shawn in his long career he had learned to trust his gut. And right now his gut was telling him something was off. "Keith anything going on out back?" Shawn says over the radio. "Negative sir," Keith replied. "Bobby anything?" Shawn radioed again. "Nothing setting off an alarm bell," Roode says. Maybe it was just what had happened a year ago that was getting Shawn to nervous for his own good. Than the sound of gun shots were heard. "Move in!… Dispatch this HBK1996 Shorts fired we need back up…"

"Officer down," Keith yells over the radio. Shawn and Mickie draw there weapons and head for the store. Getting through the door the step over Reigns dead body. "The hear something in the back and brace against a wall. "Don't shoot, I'm not armed," The owner of the store pleads coming through a door to the back. They don't even have to ask where Orton went. Shawn took the lead with Mickie behind the back exit was open. "Oh shit," Shawn says seeing both Keith and Seth down. Rollins isn't moving. Shawn goes to check on Keith who is losing a lot of blood. "Mickie we need an ambulance now," Shawn yells.

"Shawn look out!" Mickie yells before opening fire. Shawn ducks and when he looks back up Orton is returning fire as Mickie takes cover back in the store. Shawn goes for his side arm and fires but Orton ducks behind a corner for cover. Shawn gets up. "Mickie?" He yells. "You alright boss?" She asks peaking out. "Yeah… Keith damn it," Shawn says seeing his officer. Rollins is still down all signs are he's gone.

Later At a Hospital Emergency Room

"Sire you can't…" Riley stopped her by holding up his shield. Riley see Mickie and Bobbie. "How bad?" He asks. "He lost a lot of blood the bullet came real close to his heart," Mickie says near tears. "He's in surgery now might not make it," Bobby finishes. "Shawn is informing Rollins and Reign's families I assume," Riley says. They both nod. "What about the rest of the team?" "Dana and Sonya are safe," Mickie says. "Good," is all Riley says. "Hey your Mrs. is here," Bobby says. Riley is a bit shocked to see Mandy getting off an elevator. Riley excuses himself and heads over to Mandy.

"Hey, I thought you had court," Riley says. "To my shock several pleaded out. Than I heard what happened and knew you would be here," She explains. He tells her the little he knows. She knew both Rollins and Reigns. Orton is also back in the wind. "They will get him eventually," Mandy says. Riley's phone starts to ring. Its Vega, likely calling to demand something. She knew where he was and wasn't about to belled at for checking on two fallen officers and an injured one. So he ignores the call. "I also came to warn you. I hear the mayor is on his way," Mandy says. "He should be. He bares a some the blame for his," Riley says.

"Nervous," Lopez taunted as she looked at Mandy. "I just want to see Jennifer," Mandy says trying to sound calm. "I give you credit it took guts to demand to see the girl alive even letting me drive your car. Of course I'm not taking you to where Jennifer is being held just a sort of meeting place. Also don't don't do anything stupid like trying to grab the girl and run, Lopez warns. "I wouldn't risk Jennifer's life," Mandy claims.
