At the Hospital - Post-earthquake

Caitlin & Gregory

"I love you as if you were my own, Trey. But you are not. And you might die because of me," Caitlin expounded tearfully. "Because a stranger's blood is running in your veins and mine is useless and won't save you."

"What do you mean, sweetheart?," Gregory interrupted, framed in the doorway of the somewhat suffocating examination room. "Why are you saying Trey isn't your son?"

"Because it's the truth, Daddy. I didn't give birth to him. I had a miscarriage because of the car crash. Nobody knows about it except Sean and Annie. I couldn't bring myself to tell Cole. I was terrified he would turn away from me, like you did with Mom all those years ago. And I was so mad at you and her because you had planned to steal my baby and tell me he had died that I couldn't confide in you either."

Gregory was dumbfounded. He hadn't had any inkling that his plan had reached Caitlin's ears - let alone Sean's or Annie's. "Who is this child, Caitlin? How did you manage to get him?"

"Annie found him for me. His mother did not want him. She didn't have the means to bring him up. She is a junkie. Annie gave her the money you offered me for my wedding dress in exchange for her newborn boy."

"So that's why you asked Annie to be Trey's godmother," Gregory reflected. "I…"

"No, Daddy, I did not ask her, she made me choose her because keeping my secret also meant I had to go along with her plan to get closer to you and have you drift further away from Mom," Caitlin admitted.

"I can't believe Annie did exactly the same thing her father did to Cole more than two decades ago. But she couldn't have known about this at the time she got you the baby - only Olivia, Bette and I knew at that stage - unless, unless…"

All of a sudden everything came crashing down on Gregory. All the inconsistencies, all the timely coincidences:

Annie eavesdropping on Olivia at the confessional before Caitlin and Cole's wedding, doubtless hearing about her involvement in Cole's kidnapping.

Annie needing to marry him by June 30th to get Del's stocks.

Annie constantly instilling doubt in Olivia's mind about his faithfulness and following him like a weasel or worm or whatever.

Annie providing him with the liquor store receipt when nothing, absolutely nothing, in Olivia's medical record mentioned she had been drunk when she gave birth to their stillborn son. Her breath had not even faintly smelled of alcohol when he hugged her at Dr Brock's clinic after he had dropped the dreadful bomb - he remembered that now.

Dr Brock, who knew about his plan to steal Caitlin's baby. Annie must have blackmailed him with the very same piece of information.

Caitlin, not yet due but bizarrely giving birth to Trey on the very same day Olivia gave birth to their own son.

Olivia, repeatedly, painfully claiming that she had heard their baby cry.

"No," Gregory thought. "Trey is not some randomly found baby. He is Olivia's and mine. Oh my God, Liv. What have I done?," he deadpanned.
