Chapter 13: The Krokosphinx
Sergeant Major Talbot jumped a bit upon hearing his name being called out of the blue. However, upon seeing the young wizards emerge from the Pyramid unscathed , he couldn't help but smile.
"Major, we solved the mystery of the pyramid and we have a clue on where the Order of the Fang might be," stated Yusei.
"Yes, and we also learned that we can put the tuts back to sleep using a book called the Krokonomicon," said Akiza.
Sergeant Talbot was amazed. "What ho! The Order of the Fang may have the secret to defeating the Tuts eh? And it's an old book? We must make sure that book doesn't fall into the wrong hands, then! Their inner lair must be explored at once! There is no time to lose!"
"Professor Winthrop said the map pointed to an island, but how do we get there?" asked Luna.
"We set up ferries to Krokosphinx before the Kroks attacked," answered Talbot. "Good luck, too. The boat's there in front of me. Take it across to the island. I hope you find the lair where the Order of the Fang resides. We need some good news!"
"Don't worry, sir! We'll promise we'll find them!" smiled Leo. Everyone nodded and boarded the ferry. After everyone got on, the boat slowly made its way to a smaller, remote island.
"You know, despite our goal here is, I must admit, the scenery is very nice," said Akiza.
"I agree," nodded Yusei.
"Yeah, it's not everyday you suddenly become a wizard!" chuckled Crow.
"Looks like we arrived at our destination," Kalin pointed at the Krokosphinx. The boat docked and the team got off the ferry. They marveled a bit at the ancient sculpture before turning their attention to a curiously-placed ladder in the ground.
"What's this ladder doing, in the dirt?" asked Jack.
"Maybe the Marlybonians built a hideout here too?" asked Akiza.
"Only one way to find out," shrugged Yusei as he climbed down the ladder. Much to everyone's shock however, rather than being greeted by dogs, a lone, elderly Krok stood in the other side of the tunnel, in what appeared to be a classroom.
"Huh? Who are you?" asked Yusei.
The old Krok glanced at him and spoke in a raspy voice. "Greetings."
"Another teacher?" asked Akiza.
"Could it be?" asked Luna.
The old Krok nodded. "Welcome, strangers. I am Professor Alhazred. If you seek the Order of the Fang, you have found it. What brings you here?"
"Did you say the Order of the Fang? We came here to put a stop to the Tuts," began Yusei.
"We also came here to stop an evil wizard named Malistaire from finding the Krokonomicon," finished Kalin.
Alhazred shook his head slowly. "I have seen no Malistaire, but I know why he sought us. Long ago, we wrote the Krokonomicon. With the power of Life and Death, it can spell disaster in the wrong hands."
"Can you help us find the book?" asked Jack.
The old Krok shook his head. "Before I say more, you must earn the Order's trust. Please, go to the Krokosphinx. Seek out Shalek the Wise and heed his words."
"Will do, Professor," said Yusei as they climbed back up from the school.
"Hmph, figures he would say that," muttered Jack.
"Well, they he said they did write a book of life and death," said Crow. "And that is dangerous."
"Crow is right, let's go earn his trust," stated Yusei with determination as they entered the Krokosphinx.
Once they entered, they were instantly met with a cold chill. The interior had a circular platform surrounded by frozen water and unlit braziers.
"Brr, it's cold in here!" shivered Leo.
"It seems that the pyramid worships fire and the sphinx worships ice," stated Luna.
"This place is strange," remarked Leo.
"Hey, could that be the person Professor Alhazred told us to meet?" asked Akiza, gesturing towards another elderly Krok.
"Excuse, us, are you Shalek the Wise by chance?" asked Kalin. "We came here on behalf of Professor Alhazred."
The Krok smiled and nodded. "Greetings, Wizard. So the Professor wants to test you? We are the ones being tested. We put the Tuts to sleep, but now our spell has been undone."
"How can we help you?" asked Yusei.
"They will try to enslave everyone! We must reunite the Order of the Fang. We have strong allies in the Manders, but they are struggling. Earn our trust by helping us," stated Shalek.
"You can count on us!" grinned Crow.
Shalek continued. "While Alhazred remained awake during the Great Sleep, the other members of the Order of the Fang did not. If you are sincerely here to help, now is the time to seek that out. When I last saw General Khaba, our esteemed military leader, he was holding back the Tuts so we could cast the Sleep."
"Where is the general now?" asked Yusei.
"I only hope he has not suffered for his bravery. Go find the Mander Rami in the Hall of Champions. Rami can help you find Khaba," said Shalek.
The team proceeded to go through one of the doors and ran down a long hallway filled with wandering blue Manders. Something did not look right with the Manders, as they appeared to be walking mindlessly and their eyes were glazed and unfocused. Standing behind the enslaved Manders, was a green one, who was cowering in fear.
"I hope you have come to help, Wizards, because this place is swimming with Tuts!" cried Rami.
"Calm down, for Team 5Ds is here to find General Khaba," Jack boldly stated.
"You are not the only one looking for General Khaba," said Rami. The Tuts are looking for the Order of the Fang, and I fear we may be detected."
"How can we stop them?" asked Luna.
"We must slow them down before they find the General!" exclaimed Rami. Surely a powerful Wizard like yourself can take out their minion, the Sphinx Sokkwi."
"Don't worry! You can count on us!" grinned Leo.
The team split up to take out the Tuts roaming around. Several of them were dragging the poor Manders around as their slaves. Team 5Ds were utterly disturbed by this behavior as they fought the Tuts. After several rounds, the Tuts were put down and Rami watched in hope.
"So, General Khaba is safe…for now. So far you are as great and powerful a Wizard as the Order of the Fang believes you to be!"
"Thanks, Rami!" said Crow.
"General Khaba will speak only to someone carrying the Seal of the Fang," continued Rami. "To our horror, that evil Tut Nekhbet captured it before the Great Sleep. We must get it before he tricks the General into revealing it!"
Rami lead the team to Nekhbet's chamber . When the evil Tut saw that a Mander was defiling his orders, he was outraged.
"Kiss that confidence goodbye as you see you little you are."
"Let's just see how tough you really are!" remarked Yusei as they engaged in battle. Nekhbet and his guard blasted the team with ice from their staffs, but the spells did little to them down. Team 5Ds hit the Tut with several over-time spells and reduced Nekhbet to ash and dust. Kalin picked up the see that was buried in the remains.
"Rami, is this the Seal of the Fang we need?" asked Kalin.
"Yes it's the seal!" exclaimed Rami. "I am sorry I doubted you, but I never thought I's see someone more powerful than the Tuts!"
"It was no problem," smiled Leo.
"I must stay here and keep my ears open, but you have restored my faith that the Tuts can be defeated. Thank you, friend!" smiled Rami.
"Where to now?" asked Akiza.
"Go, quickly. General Khaba is hiding in the Treasure Room," waved Rami.
The team waved farewell to Rami and walked down to the far end of the path. At the end of the hallway, they were met with the most bizarre treasure room they have ever seen. The floor was covered in what appeared to be snow and the water spewing from the fountains was frozen solid.
"Wow, is this snow?" asked Leo as he touched it with his foot.
"And there's treasure boxes everywhere," stated Akiza. "That must mean we're in the right place."
"Hey, there's a Krok over there," said Luna. "That must be General Khaba."
The team approached him and showed him the Seal of the Fang. General Khaba nodded with approval.
"You bear the Seal of the Fang! Tell me, Wizards…what events occurred during my great slumber?"
"We were told the spell the Order of the Fang casted was broken and the Tuts were reawakened", said Kalin.
General Khaba was shocked. "If only we had succeeded in crushing the Tuts earlier! I confess, Wizard, my powers where taken from me by their army. If you can defeat them and take back my belongings, my powers will be restored."
"What did they take from you?" asked Yusei.
"They are the Coin of Destiny, and my Sword of the Order," stated Khaba. "The creature known as the Soul Scavenger took the coin. I also believe Rami may know the whereabouts of my sword."
"Don't worry, we'll get those things back for you," said Luna.
"We should split up," said Kalin. "Yusei, Jack, Crow, and Akiza, go recover the coin from the demon. Leo and Luna shall come with me to get the sword."
"Sounds like a plan," nodded Yusei. His team ran off to find the Soul Scavenger.
"Good luck!" waved Leo.

Yusei, Jack, Crow, and Akiza ran to the other side of the Krokosphinx and entered the tomb. Inside, they were met with a foul stench.
"I will feed on the light in your eyes…" hissed the Soul Scavenger.
"Hmph, whatever, you old windbag," muttered Jack. "You have something that doesn't belong to you!"
The four of them entered battle and the Soul Scavenger first tried to cast a spell at Crow. However, Crow was too quick for it and dodged the move.
"Ha, you missed!" laughed Crow. "And you know, who says 'feed on the light in your eyes' anyway? It just sounds weird."
"Crow! Look out!" shouted Akiza as the Scavenger's minion attacked him with a Blood Bat. The small bat smacked him with its wings.
"Ow!" yelled Crow. "Ok, you want to play rough? Well, you've got it!" Crow attacked the minion with a jolt from his wand.
Jack then attacked the Scavenger with a Fire Elf, while Yusei defeated the minion with a Scorpion. Akiza healed Crow using a Fairy.
The Soul Scavenger tried to attack them again, however the overtime effects from the Fire Elf was too much for it and it succumbed to the burn. The Coin of Destiny fell to the floor with a clang.
"This must be General Khaba's coin," said Yusei.
"I wonder how Kalin, Leo, and Luna are doing?" asked Akiza

Meanwhile, the other three went back to speak to Rami about the sword.
"Hey, Rami, nice seeing you again! We spoke to your General and he told us about a sword. Do you know where it is?" asked Leo.
Rami opened a case and looked down at the sword, or what remained of it. "Honored Ones, I am afraid that all I have left of the sword is this. Please take it to the great General if he needs it."
"What happened? It's broken," gasped Kalin.
"We must take this back to General Khaba, regardless," said Luna.
"Yes, you're right. Let's go back to him," nodded Kalin.
The three of them returned to Khaba and showed him the broken sword. The General stared in disbelief at what he saw.
"What?!" he exclaimed. This is just the scabbard! How can I fight the Tuts with just a scabbard?"
"How do we do that?" asked Leo.
"We must rebuild my weapon. First for the blade, I will need Ice Shards from the Glacial Avengers," explained Khaba.
"Ok! I'll get those for you!" said Leo bravely as he went off to fight the creatures.
"What else do you need?" asked Luna.
"The second thing I need is some Spider Carapace to form the hilt. Ice Weaver shells should be perfect for it. They can be found lurking in the Grand Arena," said Khaba.
"Alright, I'll get some for you," said Luna as she headed towards the Grand Arena.
"Anything else?" asked Kalin.
"The hilt needs gems to magnify the blade's power, for it is the blade of a general," explained Khaba. "I will need you to collect these gems in the area. Ten should be enough."
"Will do," nodded Kalin as he left the room to search for the gems. Oddly enough, his magic compass pointed to a red gem lying on the cold stone floor. Kalin walked all over the area, picking up the gems as he went by, until he had gathered ten. He then returned to General Khaba, where much to his surprise, Leo and Luna just so happened to be there as well.
"Have you collected your ingredients?" asked Kalin to the twins.
"Yep!" said Leo as he held up the ice shards.
"Here are the Spider Carapace," said Luna asshe held up a bottle.
General Khaba smiled at the three wizard's perseverance. "Yes, yes. These will be good. Well done! Now to forge the blade. Odji Sokkwi guards the Frozen Forge. We need a key to unlock the entrance to his lair. Defeat his guards. One of them must have a key."
"Will do, general," said Kalin. The three of them headed out and attacked one of the guards patrolling the corridors. After he fell, the guard dropped a key.
"Wow, that was kind of rough," said Leo in shock.
"Yea, but I'm used to it," sighed Kalin.
"Oh, that's right," said Luna. "Well, now that we have the key, we can find and defeat the leader of this place.
The three ran towards the Sokkwi leader's chamber and unlocked the door. Inside, Odji did not look pleased that his chamber when found by humans.
"You will not evade me, Wizard. Prepare to meet you doom!"
"Not if we make you meet your doom first!" taunted back Leo.
The battle commenced, with Luna placing Tower Shields on her teammates. Leo than attacked Odji Sokkwi's minion with a Cyclops, who instantly went down by its hammer swings. Odji then attacked them all with Blizzard, but thanks to Luna's shields, the blow was softened.
"You're finished," frowned Kalin at the Tut. "I attack you with Vampire." The undead creature rose and drained the life out of Odji, who crumbled into dust.
"Yeah! We defeated him! Now we can use the Frozen Forge!" cheered Leo.
"Yes, let's make General Khaba's sword," smiled Kalin.
They walked up to the forge and carefully placed all the reagents into it. The forge burst with ice cold flames as the Ice Shards, Spider Carapace, and Red Gems all magically merged to form the general's sword.
"Wow! That's amazing!" gasped Luna.
"Now, let us return to General Khaba," said Kalin.
The three wizards traveled back to Khaba and Kalin presented him the sword. General Khaba smiled wide and saluted them as he took back his restored weapon.
"Excellent work, Wizards! You made my plan a success. With you on our side, we are certain not to fail!"
"It was an honor, General," smiled Kalin. "I wonder if the others managed to get back the coin."
