Chapter 15: Leo and the Grand Arena

The odd wizard ensemble returned to the Krokosphinx after learning their new spells. Last time in their quest to stop Malistaire's scheme, they had helped General Khaba of the mysterious organization the Order of the Fang, reclaim his missing possessions.

"Well, here we are, back in this refrigerator," said Jack. "Where are we supposed to go again?"

Akiza rolled her eyes at Jack's short memory. "I believe Shalek told us to go to the Grand Arena."

Yusei nodded in agreement. "And according to our maps, it is just down this tunnel."

The team headed down the icy tunnel and came across a Mander standing near a make-shift bed. The Mander had bags under his eyes, as he didn't get enough sleep. Yusei walked up him and spoke up.

"Hey, are you Ako? Shalek the Wise told us to find you."

The Mander suddenly perked up. "Are you a warrior? Because a warrior is what we need."

"Yes, I am. And so are my friends," stated Yusei.

"Khai Amahte the Great is fighting in the Colossuem, but the Manders aren't allowed in. I've got another idea," perked Ako.

"What is it?" asked Yusei.

"Disguised as a gladiator, you wouldn't raise any suspicion! If you accept, you should battle Sphinx Gladiators to earn the Mark of the Gladiator. The Mark will gain you entry!"

Before Yusei could say anything about the matter, Leo stepped up in front of the two. "I'll be the warrior!"

"Leo!" exclaimed both Yusei and Luna simultaneously.

"Yusei, sis, I'm also a wizard in this wacky world and I also want to prove to my teacher that I have the guts to stop Malistaire! So please let me fight this fight!"

A big smile spread across the black-haired man and the twin sister's faces.

"Alright Leo, go for it!" smiled Yusei.

"That's my brother!" cheered Luna.

The other teammates nodded and Leo went to fight the Sphinx Gladiators to steal their mark. The Kroks scoffed at Leo's short appearance and tried to stomp him. However, Leo was able to counter their attacks by summoning a Minion to protect him and together, they defeated the Kroks. Leo picked up a badge from one of the fallen Kroks and pinned it to his shirt.

"Way to go, Leo!" clapped Luna.

"Aren't I cool?" smirked Leo.

"Yeah, yeah," muttered Jack, annoyed he didn't get chosen.

"That must be the Mark of the Gladiator," said Kalin. "Show it to Ako."

Leo nodded and showed the badge to Ako. When the Mander saw it, he nodded in approval.

"Perfect! Now with this gear I got you and the Mark of the Gladiator, you'll be able to march into the Colosseum unnoticed."

Ako then reached in his storage case and took out Krokotopian armor. He spent several minutes putting the armor on Leo and then stepped back to allow the boy to adjust.

"This feels…awkward…" muttered Leo as he tried to lift his arms.

"Is Leo ready now?" asked Yusei.

Ako nodded. "You'll find the Colosseum up ahead. When you enter, be sure to talk to Merkara the Arena Master. Tell him you want to fight Khai Amahte the Great. When you succeed, tell Khai Amahte that the Order of the Fang need him to rejoin the cause. My plan should work, Leo. Be careful."

"Right!" grinned Leo. He stumbled as he still struggled to adjust to the armor. With the help of the others, however, they all walked to the central Colosseum. The floor was covered in frost and a few over-looking the arena from the bleachers. Crow looked at the audience in annoyance.

"Look at those monsters in the seats," said Crow.

"It's pretty unsettling, with how they petrified they look," nodded Luna.

"But I suppose we have no choice in the matter," sighed Kalin.

"Do you really think we'll find Khai Amahte here?" asked Leo.

"Khai Amahte, you say?" asked a hissy voice.

The wizards jumped at the sound of the voice and turned to the source of it. There, standing on a raised pedestal on the side of the ring, was a Krok wielding a lance. He looked quite proud of himself and his eyes seemed to be fixated on Leo.

"Wait, you know who Khai Amahte is?" asked Yusei.

The Arena Master ignored Yusei and glanced at Leo. "Puny foreigner! You think you can take down Khai Amahte the Great? Hahaha! We'll soon see you fare against real warriors!"

"Don't underestimate me! I can hold myself in battle!" shouted Leo.

"How about proving yourself first, novice? Think you can defeat a lowly Sokkwi Ripper? Alright! Hahaha! This should be entertaining!" laughed the Arena Master.

Leo stepped onto the arena and stood-face-to-face with a Krok. The others were escorted to the audience seats, where they watched their ally anxiously.

"I hope Leo knows what he is doing…" sighed Luna.

"Your brother has fought hard fights before, so we should have lots of faith in him," Akiza reassured.

Luna smiled at Akiza and turned to watch her brother.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new contestant…Leo!" announced the Arena Master.

The audience booed at Leo, much his friends' disgust. The bell rang and the two warriors clashed. The Sokkwi Ripper tried to attack Leo with his spear, but Leo outwitted him, as he and his team had already fought plenty of Kroks previously. The Ripper fell onto the floor with a thud.

"That Krok was nothing!" yelled Jack at the crowd as the booed at Leo and how pathetic the opponent was.

"Geez, this audience is really annoying," grumbled Crow.

"Just ignore them," said Kalin.
"That's easy for you to say!" retorted Jack.

Back to the arena, the Master looked at the fallen Sokkwi Ripper before speaking up. "Not bad…but don't congratulate yourself just yet. A Sokkwi Ripper is actually a pushover. We'll see what happens in the next round."

"I can take it!" said Leo."

The Arena Master chuckled. "Ok, I think you got lucky with that Sokkwi Ripper. Prepare for something with a little more…HEAT! Ladies and gentlemen, for your enjoyment, we have a special duel; Foreigner Leo versus the Wild Sunbird! Cheer for the gladiators!"

Just as the announcer called it, a small firebird flew out from the gate and onto the Arena. Leo was a bit surprised that one of the challengers was a small bird. The Wild Sunbird was equally as surprised by the fact that his opponent was a human.

"Huh? They fight birds here?" asked Leo.

"So, you are the new kid on the block?" asked the Sunbird. "But maybe the block isn't big enough for the both of us. We'll see who stays and who goes…"

The battle bell rang and Leo and the Sunbird engaged in battle. Leo first summoned his Cyclops Minion to the field. The cyclops swung his hammer at the bird, who managed to dodge his attack. The Sunbird then retorted by shooting a fireball at the Cyclops. The fireball slightly burned Leo's minion but he shrugged off the burn. Leo ran behind the Sunbird while he was distracted by the Cyclops and casted a Troll spell at it, knocking the Sunbird to the ground.

"Impressive, Leo," smiled Yusei.

"Wow, he learned our tricks fast," stated Crow.

The Arena Master looked confused for a bit as Leo emerged victorious against the Wild Sunbird.

"Wait! Did I say that the Sunbird is tough? It's…okay. But, you will have to prove that was not beginner's luck.

"Bring it on! I can take it!" grinned Leo.

"Mmmm…I thought I heard a cheer or two for you last time. Maybe I can set up a match between you and Stonechin. But you'll have to bash a couple of those Ice Weavers first. Stonechin likes fresh Spider Eyes. If you win, he'll be willing to tangle with you," explained the Arena Master.

After the Master finished his explanation, several Krok guards brought in a few Ice Weaver spiders into the arena. Leo felt his spine tingle at the sight of the monster spiders crawling up to him.

"And I thought spiders on Earth were creepy enough…" thought Leo. "But I chose to take this challenge, so there's no turning back!"

The bell rang and the spiders lunged at Leo, knocking him to the ground. He could have sworn he heard his friends cry out his name as he struggled. He summoned a Blood Bat who stacked the Ice Weavers and tore them to pieces.

"Yuck! That's gross!" exclaimed Leo.

"Not bad, not bad," said the Arena Master. You may be able to bash the Ice Weavers, but you need more flare, more style! Can't please a crowd without those things."

The crowd roared in agreement as the iron gates opened once more. A large troll emerged and stepped onto the stage. Stonechin looked at the Spider Eyes with a hungry look on his face, but the guards kept the tray a safe distance from him.

"I can't believe they let the contestants eat each other," said Luna in a tone of disgust.

"This must be how they battle in Krokotopia," stated Yusei. "Though, I do agree with you it is unconstitional."

"Ok, Stonechin says you're on!" shouted the Arena Master. But I told him he can't have the Spider Eyes until AFTER the fight. Let's see how you fare against a stronger and HUNGRIER opponent! Next up, ladies and gentlemen! Puny foreigner Leo versus Krag Stonechin! Who will fall first?"

The bell rung once again and Stonechin rubbed his head in confusion at his opponent.

"The Arena Master says that after I smash you I get to have Spider Eyes! I like Spider Eyes! Hmmm… I like Spider Eyes…Okay, now Krag smash you!" Shortly after saying his phrase, the troll then ran at Leo swinging his club.

Leo casted a shield spell to protect him from Stonechin's attack, but the blow was still strong enough to send him back a few inches. Leo then summoned a Cyclops to fight back against the troll. Soon enough, the two rival monsters were wrestling against each other with their clubs.

"I think you really need a better taste in your diet!" shouted Leo. "Spiders are freaky and eyes are nasty!" Leo's Cyclops managed to get the upper hand on Stonechin and bonked his club on the troll's head, knocking him out.

"Alright, brother!" cheered Luna.

"Yeah! Two bosses down!" shouted Crow.

Krag Stonechin was escorted off the arena, moaning about how he would never get his meal of Spider Eyes now that he had been defeated. The monsters in the audience were now starting to question if they should continue supporting the Krokotopian fighter or not.

"Not bad," stated the Arena Master. "But I wonder how you do against a real warrior? Let me see who's left."

"Am I ready to fight Khai Amahte yet?" asked Leo.

"Okay, I think you are about ready to move up to fight Bart," said the Arena Master.

"Aww, seriously?" groaned Leo. "How many guys do I have to fight in order to prove myself?"

The Arena Master ignored him. "Problem is, Bort has an image to maintain. So before you get to take him on, you'll have to take on some Sand Stalkers first." Just as soon as he finished speaking, the sandy creatures stomped onto the ring.

"An image, huh? You guys sure look big, that's for sure," said Leo. He then summoned his Cyclops Minion. "But as they say, the bigger they are, the harder they fall!" They spent several minutes exchanging rough blows with each other until the Sand Stalkers were reduced to rubble.

"Excellent!" shouted the Master. "The crowd always loved-up-and- comers such as yourself. "

The doors opened a cyclops came out flexing his muscles. Leo thought that his own minion got brainwashed at first.

"Look out!" exclaimed the Arena Master. Bort Malletmane was born and bred to fight. Think you can best him? Then show me some spirit! I want to see a real fight."

As the tow contestants stepped onto the ring, the Arena Master called out: "Ladies and gentlemen, and children of all ages. Let's hear it for Leo, the dueling Wizard! This time, Leo is after two-time Krok Champion…Bort Malletmane!"

Bort scoffed at Leo. "You think I will give up all the fame and glory without a fight? Ha! You don't even have the showmanship to be a star like me! Really, you are no warrior."

"I may not be a warrior, but that doesn't mean I can't fight! I'm here to save the world with my friends!" shouted Leo. The bell rang and the two began to fight. Leo called upon his Cyclops Minion and the two cyclops exchanged blows with their hammers. The fight ended rather abruptly as the Minion threw Bort into the wall, knocking him out.

"Who says I'm not a star?" grinned Leo.

"Hahaha!" laughed the Arena Master. "I have to say you don't look like a real warrior, but you sure can deliver! The crowds are going wild for you! The crowd is loving you, taking on all our top guys. Now is no time to slow down. I'll get Itennu ready while you take on some Sokkwi Gougers. Go get 'em, Wiz!"

Two Kroks stepped into the ring and began to fight Leo with all they had. Leo fought back at them despite the pain of having had fought so much. He managed to fend of the Gougers just in time for Itennu to appear in the arena.

"Excellent work out there, Wizard. If only we had someone like you in the past. The duels would be much more interesting," stated the Arena Master.

"Yeah, and more lively!" nodded Leo.

"I'm taking you to the top. Fight hard and I just might get an honorarium. Of course I'll share the spells with you! Haha!" laughed the Arena Master. "Ladies and gentlemen, get set for some unparalleled entertainment! The dueling Wizard Leo will now fight our undefeated Krok Champion, the amazing Itennu Sokkwi!"

A mummified Krok stumbled into the arena, much to the confusion of Leo and his friends. The so-called champion looked as if he had just come out of his tomb, judging from the way he just looked around lazily without so much of a noise.

"Uh? That's your best fighter?" asked Leo.

"This must be a joke!" scoffed Jack. "If I was in the ring, I would have pounded that mummy back into the dirt!"

"Jack, but you aren't the one who's fighting," said Kalin.

"Yeah, plus you shouldn't judge someone by its cover," added Yusei. "Plus, there must be a reason why this opponent is their champion."

The bell rang and Ittenu Sokkwi stumbled behind Leo, catching the wizard off guard. Ittenu then scratched at Leo, causing him to flinch.

"Ack!" cried Leo. "Hey watch the armor! This isn't even my armor anyway! I just borrowed it!"

"What in the world was that technique?" shrugged Crow. "He just flopped around and scratched Leo!"

"Perhaps that was his fighting style," said Akiza.

"You're weird," said Leo as he stumbled to his feet. "But you're pretty slow for someone called the champion. Go! Cyclops! Take his crown from him!"

Leo's cyclops swung his hammer at Ittenu, knocking him to the ground. The mummy tried to get back up, but the blow was too much for him and he flopped down in defeat. The sparse crowd cheered for Leo, all saying how they haven't had a battle this interesting in a long time.

"Alright! Leo did it!" smiled Yusei.

The Arena Master laughed as he walked up to Leo. "Hahaha! You did well, my little Krok Champion. You're ready to take on Khai Amahte."

"Wow, really?!" exclaimed Leo.

"I got big plans for you! I'll wager you feel like you are ready to fight the legendary Khai Amahte the Great. Now here's your chance. You can thank me later! I set up a private show. Go through that door on the right and enter a small room. Show Khai Amahte no mercy. You'd be doing that old has-been a favor," said the Arena Master.

Leo's friends all got up from their seats to congratulate Leo on winning the tournament.

"Way to go Leo! That's my brother!" smiled Luna.

"Thanks sis!" Luna returned the smile.

"Now, all that's left is to find the one we have been looking for, Khai Amahte the Great," stated Yusei.

"Right!" shouted everyone as they headed out of the arena and down the halls. Some of the audience were chasing after them, but the guards held them back.

"I think we're making a name for ourselves, cause even the monsters are starting to see how great we are!" smirked Jack.

"I don't think that's it, you fool," sighed Crow.

When they reached the end of the hallway, they pushed open the doors and were met with the Great One himself. The renowned Krok warrior got up from his seat and growled at the wizards.

"I am the undefeated one, the only, Khai Amahte."

"So you must be the one Shalek the Wise spoke to us about," said Yusei. "We came here to get an audience with you."

"Yeah, and I won an entire tournament to come here!" added Leo.

Khai Amahte spun his staves at Leo and attacked him with a blast of Krok magic, while his servants attacked the others. Everyone scattered to the floor to dodge his blow and scattered around the room. Leo then fought back with a spell of his own, knocking down the Krok Warrior. Khai fought back but Leo used his skills he learned in the arena to outwit him. Meanwhile everyone else held back the servants until Khai Amahte conceived defeat.

"I'm not a slouch anymore, I'm a true warrior!" shouted Leo.

"I am humbled by your skill, Wizard," sighted Khai Amahte. "Sadly, I accept defeat, even though it was inevitable. It is clear that my days of glory are over. I guess I'll just have to settle for retiring filthy rich. Maybe a comeback tour in a few years…"

"Khai Amahte, you don't have to do that," reassured Yusei. "The reason why we came here was on behalf of Shalek the Wise. He requested that we recruit the Order of the Fang."

Upon hearing those words, Khai Amahte's eyes widen at the dire situation. "I've been here trying to recapture lost glory and my comrades have been at risk. I see now that the Great Sleep was no defeat, but a stalemate!"

"Will you help us defeat the tuts once and for all?" asked Kalin.

Khai nodded. "I must gather my fellow gladiators. As foreigners forced to fight for the Tuts' amusement, they will revolt too. Return to Shalek and tell him I am ready to fight! This will be my greatest glory!"

"Awesome! That's the spirit!" grinned Leo.

"You tell them, Khai Amahte!" Crow gave him a thumbs-up.

The team left the Grand Arena and returned to the entrance of the Krokosphinx. They met up with Shalek the Wise to report their accomplishment.

"Mr. Shalek, I won the tournament and found Khai Amahte!" exclaimed Leo.

Shelak smiled and congratulated them. "Ah…I should have known those who slept might forget themselves. I'm glad you were able to remind Khai Amahte of his calling!"

"So, what is the next step?" asked Luna.

"With General Khaba and Khai Amahte back, we now have four core members of the Order of the Fang, reunited in purpose! Wizards, by helping us, you have earned my trust. Therefore, I will reveal a guarded secret: the location of the Golden Fang," said Shalek.

"Wow! That's incredible!" exclaimed Akiza.

"That's awesome!" shouted Leo.

"Where is the Golden Fang?" asked Yusei.

Shalek pointed up the staircase. "Locked in the Vault of Ice for centuries, it offers great power to any Krok who wields it. We cannot afford for the Tuts to discover it now. Meet me inside the Vault of Ice."

"Will do, sir," nodded Yusei.
