Chapter 15: The Vault of Ice
Shortly after Leo emerged triumphant as the champion of the Grand Arena, the team followed Shalek the Wise into the icy maze of the Vault of Ice. As soon as they all entered, they grouped around Shalek to hear his plans.
"My heart gladdens to see you, for your help is greatly needed. This will be difficult mission," the elderly Krok explained.
"How do we get the Golden Fang?" asked Yusei.
"If you seek the Keeper of the Fang, you must first defeat the Defender, the Guardian, and the Protector of the Fang," explained Shalek.
"Wow, that's a lot of opponents," said Crow.
"Hmph, who cares? We can take them on!" boasted Jack.
Shalek gave them one last piece of advice. "But wait! Next, you must show cunning as well as might, and solve their riddles."
"Riddles, hmm? I'm not really surprised, given the environment we are in," said Akiza as the team walked past Shalek and explored the Vault. Not far from the Order of the Fang leader stood, was a giant stone door protected by three locks.
"These locks, the creatures Shalek spoke of must hold the keys we need to unlock this door," stated Kalin.
"I'm not surprised, given that this Golden Fang must be really precious," said Luna.
The team trekked further down the hallway and was confronted by one of the bosses of the vault. It resembled a female ghoul and when she spotted them, she spoke in a ghastly voice.
"'Tis the Fang you've come to claim as your own? Tamper with me, little Wizards and I'll turn you to stone!"
"Ok, that's just creepy," sighed Leo.
The Defender of the Fang screamed a nasty screech at the heroes in attempt to shoo them away from the vault. Everyone covered their ears in self-defense.
"Ow! That's loud!" cried Luna.
"Ok, I must admit that was an interesting riddle you had there," said Crow.
"You tried with your rhyme, we give you that," mocked Jack. "But can you answer this?" He summoned a Sunbird at the Defender and sent her wailing in pain. Luna then attacked her minion with Snow Serpent and sent it packing.
"Nice work, team!" smiled Yusei.
"That was too easy!" smirked Jack.
As soon as the Defender was defeated, three braziers suddenly lit up and two tablets magically appeared on the wall. The team stared at them in amazement.
"Whoa! Where did those come from?" asked Leo.
"Those must be the riddles Shalek warned us about," said Akiza. "If we defeat the other two, the mystery will be solved!"
"Akiza is right," nodded Yusei .
"Our clues are a red fire and the symbols of Fire, Ice, and Storm," said Kalin.
"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Jack.
After thinking for a minute of thinking, Akiza'a eyes lit up. "Of course! The tablets correspond to the color and order the braziers! We have to change their colors to match the tablets!"
"You're right, Akiza!" smiled Yusei. "Fire=Red, Ice=Blue, and Storm=Purple!"
As soon as the team solved the puzzle, they heard a lock break off in the distance. They ran down the corridor to the location of the next holder of the Golden Fang.
"Did you guys here that breaking sound just now?" asked Crow.
"That must mean that by defeating one of those guardians, and solving her riddle, we broke of the locks on the door!" smiled Luna.
"Yeah! And we just need to do the same for the others!" exclaimed Leo.
The team ran to the northeastern part of the map, where they were confronted by the Guardian of the Fang.
"Show your eyes, and grieve with your heart. Come to the shadows, and prepare to depart!"
"That's what I did in the past," stated Kalin. "However, I crawled out of the shadows thanks to my friends, and we will save the Spiral together!"
"Kalin…" muttered Yusei.
Kalin summoned a Vampire against the Guardian of the Fang and the two undead creatures engaged in combat. Yusei, on the other hand, focused his energy on her minion and attacked it with a Locust Swarm. After several minutes of struggling, the Defender screamed in agony and retreated, causing two obelisks and two tablets to materialize.
"So, what's this riddle?" asked Jack.
"Let's try turning on the statues," said Crow as he turned on the Krok Obelisk. He then pulled the lever, but nothing happened.
"Hey, how come the lock didn't break?" asked Leo.
Akiza gazed around and noticed the mistake. "The Spider Obelisk wasn't turned on."
"Jack!" yelled Crow. "You're supposed to turn on that one first!"
"Why could you just have done that yourself?!" retorted Jack.
"Because you were standing next to it!" snapped Crow.
Kalin sighed and shook his head. "Guys, yelling won't solve anything. I'll activate the Spider one, and Akiza, turn on the other one."
"Right," nodded Akiza as she turned on the Krok obelisk.
Yusei then pulled the lever and the second lock broke. Everyone left the room to confront the final keyholder. Neither Jack nor Crow wanted to speak to each other after their ridiculous boo-boo. Yusei, being the man of reason, tried to convince them it was nothing to worry about. The team reached the third chamber and were met with the familiar screeching voice.
"Fair is foul, and foul is fair. Try and take this Fang if you so dare…"
"We must have the Golden Fang in order to save the Spiral!" said Akiza.
"Bring it on, creep!" smirked Crow as he summoned a Kraken. Akiza summoned a Seraph and ordered her to attack the Protector of the Fang. The Seraph used her magic sword to blind the ghoul, while Crow's Kraken electrocuted the minion back to into the ground. As soon as the Protector was defeated, numerous obelisks and tablets appeared.
"This must be the last of the riddles here," said Yusei.
"Snake, Moon, Bird, Sun…" said Akiza. "I think we have to light these obelisks in the order of the tablets.
"Right," said Yusei. They activated them and just like that, the third and final lock broke. The team ran to the large stone door near the entrance to the vault and found it had been opened.
"Hey! The door is unlocked!" grinned Leo.
"Now, all that's left here is to defeat the Keeper of the Fang," said Kalin.
They entered the Keeper's room and were yelled at by the leader of the vault ghouls.
"This is my domain! You will pay for your trespasses!"
"By command of the Order of the Fang, we have come here to take the Golden Fang!" exclaimed Yusei. Everyone engaged in combat, with the Keeper attacking first. She tried lowering Jack's accuracy by screeching at him, but he managed to shrug it off by casting a damage buffer. Leo then summoned a Troll to attack the minion, who fled. Angry, the Keeper grabbed Leo and started to Drain his health.
"Leo!" cried Luna in shock. "I won't let you harm my brother!" She summoned a small blizzard and froze the Keeper solid.
"Thanks, sis," gasped Leo.
"This is the end of you!" yelled Jack as he attacked the Keeper with a Sunbird and sent the ghoul screaming away in pain. As soon as the Keeper of the Fang was defeated, the Golden Fang appeared in a tall pillar. Yusei picked it up and looked at it.
"So this must be the Golden Fang," said Yusei.
"Let's go back and speak to Shalek," nodded Kalin.
The team went back out of the Vault and spoke to the elderly Krok.
"Shalek, we have the Golden Fang, just as you wanted," said Yusei.
Shalek smiled. "You've done it! We have the Golden Fang!" However, his mood quickly soured. "But…as much as I am memorized by its presence, I hope to never use its power."
"So, what now?" asked Crow.
"At last, during the Great Sleep we learned the power of Balance, and vowed never to upset it again," said Shalek.
"The power of Balance…" muttered Yusei.
Shalek carefully took the Fang from Yusei. "Ahh, the Fang! Excellent! Now we can proceed. You may wonder, young Wizards, why we cast the Great Sleep. The truth is we felt we had no choice, once we realized the Krokonomicon had been stolen."
"Say what?!" exclaimed everyone.
Shalek sighed. "I hope you do not feel misled. I question the wisdom of ever writing such a dangerous book, but now you understand why we must fight to retrieve it."
"Do you know who took the book?" asked Kalin.
"We know Krokhotep, the ruling Tut of the Sphinx, last controlled the Krokonomicon. I know him well," said Shalek. "He's certain to be hiding behind guards in the Emperor's Retreat. Meet me inside and we will find a way to defeat him."
After finishing his speech, Shalek the Wise slowly walked to the opposite side of the hall.
A/N: Sorry if this chapter was short. I didn't want to put to dungeons in the same chapter.
