Chapter 19: Krokopatra
Yusei and his team of wizards headed towards the entrance to the Temple of Storms. The doorway sat within a giant statue of the Queen of the Kroks. The ghost of Krokhotep watched the young wizards as they unlocked the door and pushed it open.
"You know, I hope this is the last time we go into tombs," said Leo. "The smell is really starting to get to me."
"I wouldn't get my hopes up, given our main enemy," stated Kalin.
They emerged from the entrance hallway into a large circular chamber surrounded by three teleport pads. In the center of the room stood an elderly Krok who stared at them with a disgruntled face.
"King Krokhotep sent us here to find Krokopatra," stated Yusei bluntly."
The temple gatekeeper frowned. "Krokhotep ensured only the worthy could enter the inner sanctum. If you dare, step onto the teleporter at my right to try the Test of Strength. See if you can defeat the Son of Storms!"
"Test of Strength?" laughed Jack. "Let's see how strong they really are!"
The team stepped onto the teleporter and were instantly sent to a room with a ghost inside. The ghost immediately swooped in to attack them, but it was much too slow. Jack and Yusei attacked it before it had a chance to react and it retreated back into the ground.
"That was nothing!" smirked Jack.
"Let's not get too overconfident now," said Akiza as they entered the next room.
The second opponent in the test was a Krok mummy. The Krok mummy cast a curse on Leo in an attempt to lower his attack power.
"What did that mummy do?" asked Leo?
"He must have cast some sort of negative spell on you," said Luna. "But don't worry, I have your back!" She turned to the mummy and attacked it with a Snow Serpent, which wrapped its icy body around the mummy. The undead Krok tried one again to curse the twins into making them weaker, but unfortunately for it, the negative charms were not strong enough. Leo summoned a Troll, which managed to fight off the curse and defeat the mummy.
"Wow, that guy was annoying," frowned Leo.
"But you and Luna managed to pull through," smiled Yusei.
"Yes we did!" smiled Luna.
The wizards entered the final room in the Test of Strength chamber and encountered the Son of Storms, which resembled a normal Krok.
"You must be the Son of Storms," said Crow.
The Krok nodded and the battle commenced. The Son of Storms sent a wave of Lightning Bats at Crow, who took the brunt of the attack.
"Crow!" exclaimed Kalin.
"Heh, I've felt worse thing before," chuckled Crow. He then turned to the Krok. "Ok, Storm Guy, I let you hit, but now it's my turn to return the favor! Go Storm Shark!" He summoned a giant shark to bite his opponent.
"I suppose I must also attack," sighed Kalin as he summoned a Vampire which drained the remaining life out of the Son of Storms.
Upon the opponent's defeat, the teleporter at the back of the room lit up. The team stepped onto it and were transported back to the Temple Gatekeeper.
"Hey, dude! We bested the guy!" grinned Crow.
"They were no match for our might!" laughed Jack.
The Temple Gatekeeper was shocked. "You have passed the Test of Srength. But will you pass the next test? We shall see!" He cackled confidently.
"What's so funny?" asked Leo.
"We value intelligence as well as strength," smirked the Temple Gatekeeper. "Think you're clever enough? Then step on the left teleporter and try the Test of Aptitude!"
The team stepped onto the teleporter and were brought to a room with several obelisks and a book.
"Aw, man, more puzzles?" ranted Crow.
"What do we have to do here?" asked Luna.
Yusei went up to the book and read it.
"Those things that live must shine bright. Those things that do not live must remain dark."
"Oh, we must light up the obelisks that have pictures of 'living creatures', such as the bird," said Akiza.
"Good deciphering skills, Akiza," smiled Yusei. The two of them then proceeded to light up the obelisks marked with the glyphs of the bird, tree, beetle, and snake. The door in the back unlocked and revealed the next set of riddles.
"More puzzles? Come on," sighed Jack.
"Calm down, Jack," said Kalin as he read second book. "At night, the moon shines bright, and the sun sleeps till dawn."
"What does that mean?" asked Leo.
Luna thought for a minute. "I get it, we have to light up all the obelisks with moon symbols!"
"You're a quick learner," stated Kalin. He and Luna turned on the moon obelisks and turned off the sun ones. When the last moon obelisk shone, the door opened to reveal the final test. The last book had two fire braziers next to it.
Akiza went up to the book and read it. "The lighting in here isn't quite right for a storm."
"We've seen these weird magic fires here plenty of times Time to change these to purple," said Crow as he interacted with the braziers until they cackled with lightning.
The text in the book changed as well. "Much better. The words are now clearly readable. The Sun shines down on the Tree."
"I got this," said Yusei. The Sun Obelisk must be lit up first, followed by the Tree one."
"I got it, I got it," nodded Jack sarcastically. "What's next, Akiza?"
"The Tree shades the Snake," read Akiza.
"Then the Snake Obelisk…" said Yusei.
"The Snake hisses at the Beetle. The Beetle runs away."
"And finally, beetle!" shouted Jack. As soon as they solved the puzzle, the teleporter chimed and lit up, sending them back to the main room.
"Alright! We solved the test of Apti-something!" grinned Leo.
The Temple Gatekeeper looked at the wizards in awe but admitted defeat by bowing.
"Very well. You have passed both the Test of Strength and the Test of Aptitude. Prepare to enter the inner sanctum at once!" Upon finishing his sentence, the teleporter directly behind him lit up.
"Ok, team, let's go!" shouted Yusei. Everyone nodded and stepped onto the teleporter and raced down the purple hallways. At the very end of the chamber, stood the ruler of the Kroks, Krokopatra. When she saw the heroes approach her, she was furious.
"Who dares enter my Inner Sanctum? You! A seeker of the Order of the Fang?" she screeched.
"That's right we are!" shouted Crow.
"No doubt you've come for the Krokonomicon," said Krokopatra.
"Krokopatra! It's time to put an end to your reign and take back the Krokonomicon from you!" shouted Yusei.
The Krok ruler smirked a bit. "It's shall never fall into your foul hands. Prepare to be vanquished!" As soon as she finished her taunt, Krokopatra's guards all began to attack the team.
"You guys fend off her guards, I will deal with the queen myself!" shouted Yusei.
"Alright, please be careful, Yusei," said Akiza.
The battle between the dueling wizards and Krokopatra commenced, with the evil tuts mainly using Storm magic to try to protect their queen.
"Wow, these guys are angry at us!" exclaimed Leo, as he summoned a minion to aid them.
"We can't stop now! We have to prevent them from getting to Yusei!" said Crow.
Yusei's battle against Krokopatra was a tough one. Both opponents traded blows and managed to wither each other down a large amount until they were down to a small amount of health. In a last-ditch effort to destroy Yusei, Krokopatra summoned a Stormsquall Wyvern to do her bidding. The dragon-like creature's attack nearly fried Yusei's circuits.
"Agh!" he withered in pain.
"Yusei!" cried Akiza as she raced to him. She glared at Krokopatra, who was ready to wipe out the rest of Yusei's health.
"I won't let you kill Yusei!" yelled Akiza as she summoned a Pixie to heal Yusei's wounds.
"Thanks, Akiza," smiled Yusei. He then turned to a stunned Krokopatra with determination. "Krokopatra! Your rule ends now!" He summoned a Sandstorm that blew the Krok ruler off her feet and sent her crumbling to the floor.
However, as Krokopatra crumbled into dust, she smirked weakly at the heroes.
"Your triumph means nothing, young wizards! You shall never possess the Krokonomicon! I sealed it in the Sarcophagus of the Souls long ago. When the Dark One woke me, imagine his dismay to find the Sarcophagus had already been taken!"
"Say what!?" exclaimed Crow.
"The Krokonomicon isn't here?!" cried Kalin.
"Darn it!" yelled Jack.
"Krokopatra! Where was it taken to?" demanded Yusei.
Krokopatra continued her taunt. "Much like the dismay I see on your faces! I hope the Order enjoys your victory, hollow as it is…" She laughed evilly as her body finished crumbling away and filled the air in the empty room.
"I can't believe we were too late…" sighed Luna.
"So, the whole thing was a waste?" remarked Leo.
"We have to go back to the outside and report this," said Yusei.
Everyone nodded and left the Temple of Storms, where they were greeted by the Ghost of Krokhotep.
"Amazing!" exclaimed Krokhotep. "By defeating her, you stopped the Tut army! You have done very well, young wizards. Thanks to your efforts, I can now rest in peace."
"But we failed to get the Krokonomicon back," said Akiza. "It was already gone by the time we entered her chamber.
Krokhotep frowned when he heard Akiza's disappointed words. "I'm sorry you did not find the Krokonomicon, but when you do, I can think of no better person to protect it than you."
"Thanks for the kind words, sir," sighed Luna.
"The strangers here have fought bravely against the Tut army and should know you have ended the threat. Return to the surface and report your success," said Krokhotep. He then turned to depart for the afterlife.
"We will, Krokhotep, and thanks for your help," said Yusei.
The team then returned back to the Oasis and were greeted by the joyous cheers of both the Marleybonians and the Manders.
"Wow, what's with the party?" asked Crow.
"They probably already know that we defeated Krokopatra and the Tuts," replied Kalin.
"But we failed to get the Krokonomicon back!" yelled Jack angrily.
Sergeant Major Talbot overheard their conversation and walked up to them. "So, you defeated the mighty Krokopatra, have you? You're fast becoming the stuff of legends!"
"When we defeated her, she told us the Krokonomicon was taken away," said Yusei. "Do you know where it was taken?"
Sergeant Major Talbot rubbed his chin. "Without a leader, the Tuts should be easy to manage now. As much as you helped me, I must seem pretty ungrateful. Here's what I can do. It's something inside the Sarcophagus of the Souls you're looking for, eh? A book, right? We shipped the Sarcophagus off to the Royal Museum in Marleybone with some other artifacts."
"It was sent to a museum?!" exclaimed Leo.
"Take the Marleybone Spiral Key and go through the Spiral Door to Marleybone," instructed Talbot. Private Kinchley will help you find that book you're after. You've got to recover it before it's used for evil!"
"Will do, Major," nodded Yusei. "And don't worry, we promise to get back the Krokonomicon."
