Chapter 20: Marleybone
Team 5Ds left the Oasis and walked up to the Spiral Door. Yusei clutched the Marleybone Spiral Key and held it up to the door.
"Take us to Marleybone!" he exclaimed. Just like before, the door flashed as an image of what appeared to be a bustling city appeared. Everyone's dragons materialized and transported through the Spiral portal. Once they reached the other side, they emerged inside of a large church.
"You know, even though went through the door several times already, it still never ceases to amaze me," remarked Crow.
"Makes you wonder how the others go through it," added Jack.
Before anyone could add anymore comments regarding the mysteries of the Spiral Door, a dog approached them and gave them a winning salute.
"Hello," smiled Akiza. "We just arrived here from Krokotopia under orders from Sergeant Major Talbot."
The dog nodded. "Welcome to Marleybone, wizards. I'm Private Kinchley and the Sergeant ordered me to direct you wherever you need to go."
"We're looking for a sarcophagus. Do you know where it might have been taken to?" asked Kalin.
"The sarcophagus?" asked Kinchley. "You'll need to speak with the curator in the museum. He'll know how to help."
"Then let's go there and get back the book!" shouted Leo as he dashed out of the church.
"Leo! Hold up!" yelled Luna as she chased her brother.
Everyone followed Leo outside and into the main hub of Marleybone, Regeant Square. It was a bustling metropolis filled with the sounds of cars and the chatter of dogs. The team paused briefly to look around.
"Wow, it reminds me of New Domino City, don't you think?" Akiza asked Yusei.
"I agree," replied Yusei bluntly.
"It's interesting how each world looks so different," said Kalin.
"Oi, excuse me," scoffed Jack. "I hate to ruin your fun, but we didn't come here to sightsee. We came here to get back the Krokonomicon so some crazy nutcase can't use it!"
"You're right Jack," shrugged Yusei. "Let's go to the museum.
The team entered the Royal Museum, where various artifacts from Krokotopia had been put up for display. In the center of everything, stood the curator, Clancy Pembroke.
"Excuse us, sir," said Yusei. "We came here looking for an artifact called 'The Krokonomicon'. We were told it was brought here."
Clancy tipped his hat. "Ah, yes. We received the sarcophagus and it is currently being processed for display."
"We need to see it. It contains a very dangerous artifact. If it falls into the wrong hands-," began Yusei.
However, Clancy cut him off. "I'm sorry. You cannot see the sarcophagus, even if the Krokonomicon is within it."
"But you don't understand!" yelled Crow.
"It's extremely fragile!" retorted Clancy. "We can't have the general public rummaging through the museum. Go talk to Mayor Pimsbury at Digmoore Station. Only he can make exceptions."
Team 5ds' left the museum in frustration as they walked towards Digmoore Station.
"Doesn't that fool realize that book is fool of weird magic?" said Jack.
"Well, the Marleybonians said they don't believe in magic, so maybe they don't understand it's true potential?" asked Kalin.
"Yeah! So that's why we have to hurry!" exclaimed Leo.
They rode the elevator leading up to Digmoore Station and went up to the Mayor. Upon seeing them, he tipped his hat. "Hello there. How can I help you?"
"We came here to recover the Krokonomicon from the museum and the curator told us to speak with you," said Yusei.
"Can you grant us permission to get it?" asked Luna.
"Ah, you seek the Krokonomicon?" said Mayor Pimsbury. "I assure you, the safest place for it in all of Marleybone is in the museum itself. The museum is protected from most magic, but I cannot say the same for the streets. We're struggling with a gang uprising, you see."
"Gangs?" asked Kalin in surprise.
"I dare not let anything out of the museum until the streets have returned to normal. But perhaps, if you were to help us with that problem…" explained the Mayor.
"If we help you get rid of the gangs, you will give us the book!" finished Leo.
The Mayor nodded. "Sherlock Bones is investigating the O'Leary gang. He's working with the Yard, coordinating efforts from the air station. Speak with him, then we will see about your Krokonomicon."
The team walked up to another dog dressed in a green detective garb and wielding a magnifying glass. When he saw them come, he spoke up before anyone could explain about the situation.
"No need to explain. It's elementary," said Sherlock Bones. "You've come from Wizard City, and the Mayor sent you to help investigate the O' Leary gang. Let's begin at once."
"Wow, he's sharp," remarked Crow.
"Something's afoot in our fair city, and I've deduced the O' Learys are behind it, perhaps working for a more sinister and hidden enemy. We must leave no stone unturned!" stated Sherlock Bones.
"Could they be working with Malistaire?" suggested Yusei.
"Where do we start?" asked Kalin.
"I've had an occasion to work with one called Ms. Conrail. Seek her out in Hyde Park and learn what you may," said Sherlock Bones.
"Alright, will do sir," nodded Yusei. The then proceeded to board the motorized balloon cars to Hyde Park. Everyone were amazed at how swift they were, as there was nothing like this back on Planet Earth. After the car touched down on the rooftops, they met up with Ms. Conrail.
"Hello, are you Ms. Conrail? Sherlock Bones sent us here," said Luna.
"Bones sent you, has he?" Ms. Conrail asked in surprise. "Even a great detective needs a hand now and then, eh?"
"Sherlock Bones told us you have some information about the O'Leary gangs," said Yusei.
Ms. Conrail chuckled a bit. "Oh, I'm nothing special. I just keep an eye on the neighborhood. That's how I learned an O'Leary is willing to part with some inside information."
"Oh, really? Where is he?" asked Jack.
"I've arranged a meeting with Baxter, but he's afraid the other O' Learys will catch on. Wizards like you should put him at ease. Meet him at the greenhouse near the fountain. He should give the goods on whatever those O' Learys are after," said Ms. Conrail.
The team ran to the fountain as instructed by the lady. However, as soon as they approached the courtyard, a gangster jumped from the ledge and yelled at them:
"I got you now!" The gangster then tried to attack Luna as he wielded a knife.
"Hey What the-! Leave my sister alone!" cried Leo as he summoned a Cyclopes. The cyclopes smacked the ground and knocked the gangster to the ground.
"Are you ok, Luna?" asked Leo.
"Thanks Leo. That caught me off guard," sighed Luna.
"Hey! Cat guy! That was dirty going after the youngest!" yelled Crow angrily at the gangster. Before the gangster could run away, Crow managed to catch up to him and punch out his lights. The criminal crumbled to the ground and groaned in pain. The others looked around to make sure no one else saw the attack before reporting the news to Ms. Conrail.
The lady was stunned at what she heard. "An ambush? The O'Learys must be getting wise to us. Imagine if I had gone to meet Baxter! Good thing you were there!"
"Baxter wasn't there when we were attacked," frowned Akiza. "Do you have any clues to his whereabouts?"
"Let's find Baxter before the O'Learys do. A little birdy told me the location of a few of his hideouts," stated Ms. Conrail. "Go look for him in each safe house. Be careful, luv."
"It's time for the Enforcers to do some enforcing!" smirked Kalin as they all ran to the safehouses.
"What does that mean?" asked Leo.
"Oh that? That was an old saying Kalin always said back in Satellite," chuckled Jack.
"That's an enthusiastic phrase, if I must say," smiled Akiza.
"Yeah," grinned Yusei. "There's one of the safehouses up ahead."
"Let's give them a rude awakening!" laughed Crow as they barged into the safehouse. As soon as they ran into the building, the gangsters stationed in side jumped in fright.
"Aaaw! You're not Baxter! You'll regret meeting me, you will."
"Oh yeah? You'll have to catch us first!" mocked Crow as they ran back out.
"Go, go, go, go, go!" laughed Leo as the gangsters chased the wizards out. As soon as they left the building, the gangsters were quickly subdued by Jack and Kalin.
"Baxter wasn't inside. Let's check another hideout," said Yusei.
They ran to the west safehouse and entered it as before. The gangsters inside were surprised at the bunch of wizards.
"We can't lose him! Try to stop him before he gets away!"
"And you're under arrest!" shouted Crow as everyone summoned spells and subdued the gangsters. They investigated the building but could not find any traces of Baxter.
"He's not here either," frowned Kalin. "These gangers are more cunning than I thought.
"We have to report back to Ms. Conrail," said Yusei. "Maybe she has a new lead."
The team nodded and ran back to Ms. Conrail. She was surprised when she noticed that the team had a few bruises.
"More ambushes. Baxter must have the real goods on the O' Learys. No matter, we'll save him," she stated.
"I've got a bloke who might know where Baxter is. "Won't part with information nice 'n' easy, though. I don't condone it, but a spat of the old rough-and-tumble might be in order. Find Willie Marks beyond the garden. Defeat him and he'll tell us what we need to know."
"Where you at Wlliie?" asked Jack.
Ms. Conrail marked the criminal's location on the map and showed it to them. After studying it for bit, the team ran to the far south of the map and entered the Hyde Park clock tower. Inside stood a fat cat and his henchmen.
"What a pathetic excuse for an opponent you are, Wizard," sneered Willie Marks.
"Jack Atlas will run circles around you, thank you very much!" yelled Jack.
"Looks you offended him," smirked Kalin.
Team 5Ds and the gangsters proceeded to battle each other. After several minutes of exchanging blows, Willie Marks raised his hands up in the air and surrendered.
"Now why did I go tangling with a Wizard?" exclaimed Willie. "All right, you got me. I know where Baxter is."
"You better tell us the truth," glared Kalin, his eyes seemingly glowed.
Williw Marks gulped at Kalin's expression. They're keeping him in the old Hyde fraternity house. Here's the key to the place." He then gave Kalin the key and looked away.
"Alright, let's report to Ms. Conrail," Kalin said as he turned to leave.
When Ms. Conrail saw the key in their possession, she gave them a faint smile. "He said Baxter was at the old Hyde fraternity house? If he's there, the big mucks haven't had a chance to get their claws into him. Great job, wizards. We'll find him yet. The building is located in the upper left hand corner of your map. Find Baxter before the O' Learys know we've found him. Go quickly!"
"Alright, let's go recue Baxter!" grinned Leo.
The team then ran to the fraternity house and use the key Willie Marks gave them to unlock the door. When they entered, they were greeted by several robots. And standing among them was Baxter.
"Is that Baxter?!" exclaimed Akiza.
"Help! I'm being kidnapped! Don't let the Metal Man take me!" cried Baxter as he struggled to free himself from the robots' grip.
"Hey! Give us Baxter!" yelled Yusei to the Metal Men.
"You will not have this one wiz-ard," taunted the Metal Man. "We must return with him to our master. Resistance is futile!"
The robots then began to attack the heroes as Baxter helplessly watched. They attacked with electrical shocks that managed to land several hits. However, the wizards managed to turn Metal Man and several of its soldiers into scrap metal. Unfortunately, amidst all the chaos, a few of the remaining robots managed to drag Baxter out of the building through the back door.
"Please don't let them take me! Noooo!"
"Baxter!" cried Yusei as he tried to run after the robots. However, the strain of fighting electrical blasts proved too much for them.
"Darn it! We failed!" cursed Jack.
"Let's go back to Ms. Conrail. She still has to know about this," said Akiza.
Everyone nodded and reluctantly returned to Ms. Conrail, who looked confused.
"Well, Ms. Conrail. We tried our best, but the enemy had some strong allies and took Baxter before we could do anything," said Kalin.
"They took Baxter?" gasped Ms. Conrail. "Well, I know you did all you could. Maybe there is still hope."
"You're right!" said Luna. "We can't give up now!"
"Tell Mr. Bones that a Clockwork has Baxter. Maybe he can sort the whole thing out. Best of luck, Wizards," said Ms. Conrail.
"Thank you, Ms. Conrail," said Yusei.
The wizards boarded the air balloon and returned to Digmoore Station and Sherlock Bones. After telling the story to the sleuthing canine, he puffed his smoke pipe in deep thought.
"A Clockwork kidnapped Baxter? It would seem that we have touched a nerve with them and they are becoming bold. But all is not lost!"
"Do you have any idea where they might have taken him and why?" asked Yusei.
"I've heard rumors about those metal men lurking over by Chelsea Tower. The game is still afoot, my friend. We have much work to do!" exclaimed Sherlock Bones.
"Chelsea Tower is overrun by those robots?" asked Leo.
"If we are to locate Baxter, we must call upon Ms. Marphely over in Chelsea Court. She keeps an eye on that neighborhood and knows what goes on over there. I have heard her speak of those Clockworks. Seek her out at once," said Bones.
