Okay, here we go with what I have for my version of U-Turn . No Luca so far, but he wasn't needed since I still have Erika. Hope you still enjoy this.
The next morning Chris's told Erika what had happened, and that Billie had been the one who gave it away. Her roommate had been laughing the whole run, but as soon as they had sat down for breakfast Erika had turned a little more serious.
"Billie is smart, and she takes her cues from you, who to accept and who to dislike. So, what are you going to do about it?" Erika asks and pets Billie's head lightly. The young dog moves closer to Erika and puts her head on the woman's lap.
That gesture has Chris laughing. Yes, she should be proud that Billie was that in tune with her and took her cues about people from her, but still, she wasn't supposed to show the whole world that Chris was in emotional turmoil. She was supposed to work with any officer in uniform and respect them.
"What are you going to do now? You should try talking this stuff out with him." Erika mumbles over the rim of her coffee cup while taking a sip and studying Chris intently.
"What would you do? I can't discuss this with him. Not again. I mean, I probably will just ignore the awkward and try to act normal around and with him." Chris shrugs, not sure herself if that Plan can work if she'll be able to do that.
"That includes an evening alone here with pizza and beer?", Erika's teasingly raised eyebrow calls into question that plan, and Chris can't help but admit that that is for sure not the first step.
"Not right away. But I have to convince Billie somehow that he is okay and talking rather than ignoring is the first step." Chris explains her thought process and takes a sip of her coffee.
"If you say so, but don't you think that plan has a flaw? Shouldn't Billie see your interactions? She isn't with us at HQ …"
Chris hates her friend for putting her finger directly on that point and she snaps a little.
"Baby steps, okay? This isn't as easy as you make it out."
"Just saying…" Erika shrugs lightly and then continues "Maybe this thing between you isn't as clear cut and resolved as you tried telling me…"
After that, they had to leave for work and had tabled the discussion, but Chris couldn't just shut off her brain. She tried being normal with Street, she asked him about the phone calls he got over the course of the day. Calls he seemed to ignore as best as he could, but when she saw that it was a hospital calling, she got even more suspicious. After the ordeal with Nate, she had taken to studying his every move. She told herself it was to keep from getting fooled again, but she knew she was very worried about him.
The way he immersed himself in the case, did more than was necessary, and threw himself into the task of finding those girls mother, she saw he was hiding from something. Those hospital calls with a high probability. So, when she spots him alone in the armory, she takes her chances and asks him "Who is in the hospital?"
She tries to keep her voice as even as possible, to project the concerned friend she is. She knows that cornering Street usually ends in chaos, as his first reaction seems to be to lash out. Her inner voice reminds Chris that they both have that tendency.
Street raises an eyebrow at her question.
"Come on, we are still friends, right?" she shifts a little nervously on the balls of her feet.
He studies her quietly for a few more moments.
"If you say so," and turns back to the task he was doing before his phone went off.
Chris hates the walls he puts up, but at the same time, it's probably her own fault.
"Look, Street. This is probably not the place to talk this out but if you need someone to talk to. I am here. Or around. Just don't try to work out whatever is going on that a hospital is calling you multiple times a day" she gestures to his again ringing phone," alone."
She studies him for a little longer, but Street seems determined to not let her in on what is going on. Finally, Chris points to the tablet he has in front of himself, intermittently checking the data he has on there.
„You can't hide from your problems by burying yourself in work, or additional assignments."
Chris regrets the statement as soon as it left her mouth, and she sees his disbelieving look.
"So, that's something only you are allowed to do now?" There is an unusual bite to his voice. The bitter laugh at the end tells her she hurt him. "Chris, you've been running from a serious conversation ever since that night. You have no right to lecture me on dealing with my mom."
And there it was. Chris wasn't sure he meant to tell her, but he said it. His trouble was his mother, again.
"What's wrong with her?" even if she dislikes Karen and everything the woman has done to Street, she is still his mother. And as crazy as it sounds, he probably will always care for her in some way.
So, when he shrugs his shoulders and admits "I don't know." Chris is slightly shocked. She vividly remembers that conversation he had with Molly in the kitchen and can't quite believe he never checked up on Karen.
"Why haven't you called them back?" Chris asks, deciding to ignore that she has no right and just be his friend right now. They can solve the rest of this mess later.
"You don't get to ask me that. Why are you here Chris? You've ignored me and now all of a sudden…" and there it was. She saw the moment he realized it. "Tan talked to you too." It was a simple statement and then he just walked out of the armory and ignored her.
Chris realized her plan wasn't as simple to follow as she had thought, especially if Jim Street decides not to participate.
