Here it is, my third chapter, and from the title, you can guess who is introduced in this chapter.
Sorry about the wait, it's hard to think how the canon cast would interact with a person, who acts completely differently from anyone else they know.
Now then, lets see how a Chunibyo interacts with a Weirdo. While those words can be interchangeable, they can also be mutually exclusive from each other; and that's what I intend for my oc to be.
I want him to have his own flavour of Weirdness that would leave the likes of the Axis Cult or the Crimson Demon Clan either confused, frustrated or dumbfounded.
Now the recap:
Kazuma and Aqua went to the guild to register as adventures, but run into a small problem...
They have no money to pay the fee.
Fortunately, my oc saves the day with a coin pouch he got from doing his first heroic deed, helping the elderly.
When they got their cards which, quantify their parameters to determine which class they're most suited for, Kazuma's stats weren't suited for adventuring but he persisted anyway, Av'Rick's stats were around twice Kazuma's, thanks to his Self Supremacy but he chose 'Adventurer' like Kazuma, and Aqua had the highest stats from the trio but has low intelligence and even lower luck so she chose Archpriest to get praises.
Also, it turns out that Av'Rick's Self Supremacy, enables him to create new skill that relates to his control over his body and mind.
Recap's over, time for the story.
Chapter 2: A Weirdo, A Chunibyo, and Frogs
Grassy plains - Home of the Giant Frogs
It's a beautiful day, outside the town of Axel. The birds are singing, flowers are blooming, two teens are being chased by giant frogs...
...Oh yeah... About that last part...
"Save us, Aqua!" Kazuma screams, as he and Av'Rick run from a giant pink frog, with Aqua laughing hysterically from a distance.
Kazuma runs frantically, while Av'Rick runs with his arms down and his face still stoic as ever, not seemingly caring that he's being chased by a giant amphibian.
After staying at the Inn, the trio went to the guild to look for a job for beginners like them. They were running low on money as a result of all the spending from buying Kazuma a short sword, their meals and staying a night at the Inn.
The only job available for people like them is an extermination of five giant frogs. Emphasis on giant, since these frogs are five times the size of a horse. During their mating seasons, they prey on farm animals by snaring them with their tongue and swallowing them whole; also it isn't uncommon for people and children to disappear during these times, let that sink in for you.
Done? Moving on then.
"Look at you two! Running away from something as weak a frog!" Aqua chortles.
Kazuma glares at the Goddess while Av'Rick just stares at her as they keep running.
"Hey! If they're so weak, why don't you try to kill them!" Av'Rick yells blandly.
Aqua starts calming down. "I suppose I should." Her face then becomes serious. "But only if you agree to my demands!"
"Seriously!?" Kazuma rages. "We're about to get eaten!"
Aqua ignores Kazuma's rants and continues with her ultimatum.
"First, you two shall refer to me as Lady Aqua. Second, you both will join the Axis Order, the religion that worships me. Third, when I say gimme, you must give me whatever food you're eating..."
As Aqua continues with her demands, the frog stops chasing the NEET and Weirdo, and goes after the inept Goddess, swallowing her.
Kazuma's eyes widen, while Av'Rick just blankly stares.
"Aqua! Don't get eaten!"
Kazuma leaps at the frog and kills it with his sword, nothing too flashy worth describing about.
Aqua slides out of the frog's mouth as it falls, covered in slime and launches herself towards Kazuma, crying.
"Thank you Kazuma! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
Kazuma scrunches his face in disgust at the smell given off by the slime covering Aqua.
"Maybe we should come back later and think of a better way to kill the frogs." Av'Rick suggests, after Kazuma pushes Aqua off.
Aqua stands up and look distraught at the suggestion.
"I can't go back in town looking like this! If I did all my loyal followers would lose faith in me."
Kazuma looks at her dumbfounded, while Av'Rick stares at her with a deadpan expression.
"Didn't you say you're trying to keep a low profile? I thought you said that nobody's supposed to know that you're a Goddess?" Av'Rick points out stolidly.
Aqua ignores him and glares at a frog in the distance in a cute manner, before running towards it.
"Aqua, wait!" Kazuma yells.
Magic energy starts to form in her right hand, before starting to close it into a fist.
"GOD BLOW!!!" She exclaims, suprising Kazuma while Av'Rick just stares at her fist with curiosity.
"A most lethal fist! One that carries a Goddess' rage and sorrow! Whomever it strikes shall perish!" Her fist connects.
But, the frog's belly only ripples and it begins to stare at its would be assailant with hunger in its eyes (literally, it needs energy for mating, remember... Actually, don't do that).
Aqua's response?
"You know, up close you guys are pretty cute."
The frog just gobbles her up as a 'thank you' gesture.
"Aqua!" Just as Kazuma was about to go save her again, Av'Rick grabs his shoulder.
"Wait. I'll save her."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, she'll just hug you again if you did it and you'd be covered in slime... again."
"...Good point. Here." Kazuma hands him the sword, but Av'Rick declines.
"No. I won't need." Av'Rick said, his face still stoic but his eyes burning with determination.
"What!? Your fist isn't going to do any damage! You saw how that frog was unaffected by Aqua's 'god blow'." Kazuma replies, air quoting 'god blow'.
"I've got this."
Av'Rick runs towards the frog, not noticing the teen as it slowly swallows its blue meal.
Using his Strength Concentration, Av'Rick focuses his strength to his legs to lift himself off the ground and land on the frog's back. The frog ignores the teen in favour of finishing its meal, which oddly tastes better than what it usually eats (gee, I wonder why).
Av'Rick now focuses all of his strength into his right arm and punches the back of the frog's head. The resulting impact causes the frog's skull to collapse, crushing its brain.
Normally blunt force wouldn't be effective on the giant frogs, since their fat and muscle disperses the impact, evident when Aqua tried punching one. However, their skulls are a different story. Many animals do not posses that much muscle or tissue where their skulls, including frogs, regardless of size. So, enough blunt force from something like a hammer, club or fist can kill them if aimed at this area.
As the frog falls over and Aqua slides out again, Kazuma stares at Av'Rick in shock. He makes a mental note not to anger him, in fear of what how could cave in his skull like did with frog's.
Meanwhile, Av'Rick slides down the frog and checks his class card to see if there's any change to it. He's pretty sure that punch should have broken his hand or something. After all, a skull as large as that frog's, must be incredibly thick and breaking it with his bare hand when he's just a beginner must have caused some damage. This world may be like a video game, but it's still real life.
Looking at his card, he discovers that he's learned a new skill, one he created during the 'fight' with the frogs and leveled up.
Adaptive Development (Lv. Max): A skill created through Body Supremacy, which allows the user to grow stronger when facing stronger opponents. All stats permanently increase and skills level up faster, when facing a higher leveled opponents. The greater the difference between levels, the faster the users stats and skill levels will increase as the battle progresses.
Huh... neat.
With this, it should be easier doing harder quests since he can grow stronger at a much faster rate.
The skill must have increased his body's durability while attacking the frog to the point that frog skulls can't hurt him.
Suddenly, he feels something jump behind him. When he turns his head, he sees Aqua crying again, hugging him tightly.
"T-thank you Av'Rick. Thank you for saving me." She sobs.
Av'Rick just stands there, his face still expressionless as if not caring for the slime staining his clothes. It could always be worse.
"I think now is a good time to go back. Do you want to go back now Aqua?"
Aqua lets go of Av'Rick, looking at the ground while nodding.
And so, the trio walk back into town, with Aqua walking very closely with Av'Rick the whole way. The trauma of getting eating having caused her to stay close to the one who punched her assailant to death.
The Stables - The home of horses and Adventurers
It is late at night, Av'Rick wakes up. Getting off the duvet he turns to the moon, shining down from the small window.
Today has been very hectic.
A few hours after the quest, the trio returned to the guild. After washing up of course. Although they couldn't finish the quest, they did manage to get some money from killing the two toads, as their meat is considered a delicacy when fried.
However, that lead to a problem. The money they earned, was only enough to provide them a few meals and they didn't have enough for a night in an Inn.
Their only option left was the stables, where most new Adventurers tend to stay.
Fortunately, they still have enough Eris left to buy a duvet so they didn't have to sleep on the hay or... horse excrements.
Staring at the sleeping forms of only companions, Av'Rick's face begins to soften up. Although he doesn't show any of his emotions to anyone, that doesn't mean he is apathetic. It's just that, he has a very hard time expressing his emotions facially. His only real expression of emotions is through his actions, like when he smashed that frog's skull to save Aqua being eaten. His Tranquil State, makes it even harder to properly display his emotions.
Kazuma is sleeping quietly, with a scowl on his face. He was disappointed earlier, when he found out that the money they received was comparable to the minimum wages of other, less dangerous jobs in Axel. Aqua, on the other hand is asleep without a care in the world. After buying their meals with their meagre earnings, Aqua quickly cheered up and began eating energetically, pretending like she didn't almost become a meal herself.
These two, with all their flaws, are the only people that he considers the closest thing to friends, despite only knowing them for almost two days. Back on earth, he didn't have any friends... he was actually very lonely, even if his face doesn't show it (or any emotion, most of the time).
But enough about tragic back stories.
Now is the time for him to create skills that will help the three of them to tackle all the hurdles this world will throw at, him and his only friends.
The first skill on the list is one that enables him to assess the problems they'll face, and efficiently solve them in the best way possible.
Going back to his pokerface facade, he goes outside, a few metres from the stables and sits down, crossing his legs.
Closing his eyes, he uses Mindshifting to try to manipulate his mind to be efficient.
As he continues, he can starts to feel something happening to his mind. Almost like, a certain aspect of it became malleable.
Taking out his card, he sees a new skill has been created.
Accelerated Reprogramming (Lv. Max): A skill created through Mindshifting, enabling the user to change their behavioral patterns, reflexes and habits at an accelerated rate.
Ok... Not what he was going for, but it should be enough to get what he needs.
Closing his eyes again, Av'Rick uses his new skill to see if he can make his mind more efficient.
With Accelerated Reprogramming, he alters his behavioral patterns to always be focused on whatever goal he currently has, his habits to look around to see how anything could benefit him and his friends, his reflexes to be sharper so he can be better prepared against unexpected attacks and other miscellaneous changes.
When he's done he takes out his card to find the skill he's been looking for has been created, including other skills as result of changing how he thinks.
Hyper Instincts (Lv. Max): A skill created through Accelerated Reprogramming, enabling the user to process the world in the most efficient and optimal manner possible, solving problems using logical/illogical sense/strategies. Intelligence and Wisdom increase/decrease depending on the situation.
Indomitable Willpower (Lv. Max): A skill created through Accelerate Reprogramming, enabling the user to possess unnaturally strong willpower. User is immune to all outside mental influence, gain a 50% increase to all current stats when in combat and the effects of all other skills are enhanced by 50%.
Unpredictability (Lv. Max): A skill created through Accelerated Reprogramming, enabling the user to be unpredictable. User is immune to all precognitive and perception skills.
These skills seem good. Hyper Instincts, makes his mind efficient, Indomitable Willpower enhances his other skills, and Unpredictability makes it hard for his opponents to know what he's going to do.
Now that he's gotten skills for his mind, he needs to create skills for his body.
Strength Concentration won't be enough. While it did increase by two levels, when he fought that frog, it won't be enough to fight other opponents. Such as enemies who are very fast. After all, you can't hit what you can't catch.
Closing his eyes again he begins to try to create new skills that improve his speed with Body Supremacy.
But, we'll get to that later, since now is a good time to move this chapter along.
Guild Hall
The next day, the trio arrive at the guild hall for breakfast.
While they are eating breakfast, they talk about how they need more help in dispatching the frogs to complete the quest.
Aqua decides to be the one to write the recruitment paper, so people can join their party.
Between waiting for a new party member and eating his meal, Av'Rick decides now is good time to sleep, since he didn't get much last night.
After a few hours, he wakes up from putting his head down on the table to see Kazuma and Aqua still waiting.
Turns out, that Aqua wrote on the recruitment paper that, only those with advanced classes can join.
They've waited from early in the morning, to late in the afternoon, and still, nobody came.
Kazuma became impatient and suggests they lower their(/Aqua's) standards and let greener Adventurers join their party.
Aqua, who was sitting next to Av'Rick while he slept, just looks down at her lap and sobs quietly due her believing that everyone would come and try to join the party that has an Archpriest in their group. Obviously, nobody coming caused her ego to take a hit as she realised how little people actually think of her.
Av'Rick proceeds to pet her like a dog, as an attempt of comforting her. Aqua would have swatted his hand away for treating a Goddess like her as if she's a child, but she's too upset to care.
"I happen to have noticed your recruitment poster." A voice approaches them.
The three turn their heads to the owner of the voice. She has red eyes and brown hair and her outfit consists of a wizards clothing with a red, yellow and black colour scheme. She also wears an eyepatch with a cross on it.
"Our fate to meet was chosen by this world." Her eye begins to glow red.
"My quest to find suitable companions has come to an end." She throws her arm out before grabbing her hat and posing dramatically.
"My name is Megumin! An Archwizard who wields the power of explosion! The most feared, most powerful, most deadly magic in all the land!"
Kazuma and Aqua stare at her in confusion, while Av'Rick, who is still petting Aqua's head absentmindedly, looks at her in curiosity.
Believing their silence is them shocked by her 'awesome' introduction the girl, now known as Megumin, continues.
"Does thou desire to ally with a power so fearsome, its user has been shunned by the world itself." She puts a hand to her face. "Then show thy resolve and gaze into the abyss with me. But, take heed, for if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back!"
Another silence ensues...
Until Kazuma decides to speak first to the new arrival.
"Are you making fun of us?"
Magumin falters. Before she could reply, Av'Rick decides to join on.
"She's saying, no one else wants her in their party, her favourite magic is Explosion magic, and that she's desperate to get into ours." Av'Rick states bluntly, his Hyper Instincts reading between the lines of Megumin's introduction.
"W-what?! I'm not desperate!" She blurts quickly.
Now Aqua joins in on the conversation.
"Wait. Those red eyes, are you a-" She swats away Av'Rick's hand, which has still been petting her the whole time. "- are you a Crimson Demon?"
Regaining her composure, Megumin goes back to her theatrical demeanour.
"Indeed! I am Megumin! The most powerful Archwizard of the Crimson Demons! My lethal magic can destroy the tallest Mountains! Smash... the... hardest... stone..."
Before falling to the floor.
"Woah. Are you okay?" Kazuma asks.
A growl can be heard emanating from the Crimson Wizard.
"I haven't had anything to eat in three whole days."
"Well, if you're hungry, I guess I could spot you." Kazuma offers. "But, what's with the eye patch. Cause I mean, our friend here can heal you, if you want." He says, pointing to Aqua.
"Healing magic is like, her only skill."
"My what?!" Aqua fumes.
"Yeah Kazuma, healing isn't her only useful skill." Av'Rick interjects, in his emotionless tone.
Aqua perks up that at least, one of the reincarnates acknowledge how she's amazing, skillful and divine like the Goddess she is.
"She's also good at being bait for the frogs."
Until Av'Rick follows up by saying she's great as bait.
"Hey!"
Before she could reply, Megumin goes back into her Chunibyo persona.
"HA! I this is not an eyepatch, but a magic item that suppresses my powers." She says as she slowly gets up.
"I dare not ever remove it. For if I did a great catastrophe would befell this world." She states ominously.
Before blinking with both her eyes as she realises her eyepatch isn't there anymore.
"Oh... So this isn't a seal. You were trying to be cool again."
Kazuma, Aqua, and Megumin turn their eyes towards Av'Rick, who is suddenly standing next to Megumin. With her eyepatch in his hand and an expression that might be disappointment, if his Tranquil State doesn't prevent him from outwardly expressing emotions.
"G-give it back!" Megumin screeches, as she snatches her eyepatch from him and puts it back on.
"How did you get their so fast?" Kazuma asks, shocked that none of them saw Av'Rick getting up and swiping Megumin's eyepatch without any of them noticing.
Av'Rick's only response was a shrug, to which Kazuma responds with a deadpan stare. Before looking at the Archwizard, who is trying to regain her composure after Av'Rick ruined her moment and then at Aqua.
"So Aqua. What exactly is a Crimson Demon?" He asks her, not really expecting her to give any useful information.
The Archpriest puts a finger on her chin, with a contemplating expression.
"Well, people of the Crimson Demons are known for their high intelligence and powerful intelligence." She explains, before sporting a mischievous expression. "They're also known for their weird names."
"What's weird about her name?" Av'Rick asks, causing Aqua and Kazuma to look at him incredulously.
Even Megumin, who was about to defend her peoples culture, looks at the Self Supremacist in shock.
"Your kidding, right?"
"Uh, no. No I'm not." Av'Rick responds to Kazuma's bafflement in stoic confusion.
"How is having a name, not from around where you live weird or bad? I don't get why it's wrong to be named anything that isn't profane or inappropriate." He clarifies.
"E-exactly!" Megumin exclaims. "To me, everyone here has weird names. But where I'm from, my name is totally normal."
"Oh, yeah. What are your parents names?" Kazuma asks.
"My mother's name is Yuiyui, and my father's name is Hyoizaboru!" She answers dramatically, seemingly proud of her parents names.
"Yup. Those names sound as normal as yours Megumin. Kazuma and Aqua shouldn't be insensitive to foreign culture, and consider that what we see as weird you would see as normal. Not that I think you're weird. You seem very expressive instead of weird."
"Thank you. It's nice to finally meet someone, who doesn't judge me by my name or how I act."
Kazuma and Aqua both just stare at the two.
"Eh. Just as long as she can use magic I guess it's fine." Kazuma states, wanting to move on from this bizarre introduction.
Grassy Plains
After another meal, the quartet of adventurers head towards the Grassy plains to complete the frog slaying quest.
Two frogs can be seen in the distance, unaware of their arrival.
"I need you three to keep that frog busy while I prepare to use my magic to kill the other frog." Said Megumin, asking the others to distract the frog closest to them, while she attacks the furthest frog.
Kazuma draws out his sword, Av'Rick rolls his shoulders and Aqua pulls out a flower staff that she's always had since coming to this world but forgot it existed. Apparently.
"Alright, here's the plan. While Megumin charges her spell, Av'Rick will take the frog, head on, whilst Aqua will- AQUA!!!"
As Kazuma is explaining his plan, Aqua runs off towards the frog, no doubt to enact her revenge.
"It's pay back time! GOD REQUIEM!!!" She yells out her skill, which is really just God blow but with her staff flowing with energy instead of her fist.
But just like last time, the frog eats her, just without her trying to appealing it with its looks.
"Thats a Goddess for you, sacrificing herself to by us time." Kazuma mutters, before turning his head towards Av'Rick.
"Hey could you-" Just before he could finish, Kazuma has to cover his eyes as Av'Rick vanishes in a sudden burst of speed, forcing him to cover his eyes from the resulting dust.
This speed is a result of Av'Rick using one of three other skills he learned last night, when he tried to increase his speed, and leveled up, along with Strength Concentration Lv. 10.
Motion Concentration (Lv. 8): A skill created through Body Supremacy, which enables the user to focus motion/acceleration/inertia/speed into any point of their body. Higher levels increase the amount of motion that can be focused.
With Motion Concentration, he focuses speed into his legs and dashes towards the frog eating Aqua. As he approaches, he begins to use Strength Concentration to focus strength into his right arm, and then jumps upwards, towards the frog's neck.
A sickening crack could be heard that thankfully neither Kazuma nor Megumin can hear, since they're too far away. This crack is then followed by the frog violently spitting Aqua, who is screaming, into the air, as it falls on its back and dies as a result of the neck injury Av'Rick inflicted.
Thanks to Motion Concentration, Av'Rick killed the frog by applying Newton's second law of motion. And by that, I mean he accelerated at such a rate, that he delivered a devastating punch to the frog's neck, causing it's skull to be removed from the rest of it's body, while forcing it to spit out Aqua at the same time.
Speaking of which.
"AAAAAHHHHH!!!" Aqua begins falling from the air, after reaching her peak from being spat out, failing her arms wildly. Her screaming getting louder as she falls closer to the ground.
Fortunately for her, Av'Rick is standing exactly where she's going to land. Spreading his arms, the impassive teen catches the Goddess in a bridal carry. The Goddess in question, who is now hugging him in his arms and crying hysterically again.
In the distance, Kazuma stares wide eyed at how fast Av'Rick killed that frog compared to yesterday. Where did this new speed come from? How did he manage to get this strong in less than a day? Why is he cradling Aqua like a baby?
Maybe that last one isn't relevant at the moment, but it's still shocking to see someone, who expresses little to no emotion be so gentle. Especially, to someone like Aqua, who's been completely useless this whole time. Okay, explaining who the Crimson Demons are was kind of helpful, but every other time, she either complains, or makes things worse.
Just as he is about to walk up to them, Megumin begins her chanting.
"Darkness, blacker than black and darker than dark, I beseech thee, merge with my deep crimson."
Swirls of mana begins to spiral around Megumin as she intones her spell.
"The time of awakening cometh. Justice, fallen upon the infallible boundary, appear now as an intangible distortion!"
The swirl of mana now begins to focus on the frog in the distance, who looks intimidated and unwilling to move, as the wind begins to blow fiercely.
"Dance, dance, dance."
The swirl becomes a torrent surrounding the frog, as Megumin's voice begins to pick up more intensity. Av'Rick looks at the torrent impassively, with his eyes shining with wonder at the shade of blue the mana appears as (he likes the colour blue, especially if it's a dark shade of blue; he finds staring at it to be soothing).
"I desire, for my torrent of power, a destructive force: A destructive force without equal!"
A crescendo is reached as the vortex of mana turns chaotic. Kazuma stares with his eyes almost bulges out and his jaw hanging open at the sheer power coming from the spell.
"Return all of creation into cinders, come from the abyss!"
The mana becomes unstable, as small flashes of light can be seen from within the torrent. Meanwhile, Aqua hasn't let go of Av'Rick, who is still bridal carrying her, completely oblivious to the torrent of mana converging on the giant frog, in favour of crying onto the teen and having him cradle her like she's the most important thing to him (his loneliness has caused him to be THAT desperate for company that he's willing to hold AQUA of all people as protectively as possible even if she's covered in slime).
"This is the mightiest attack known to man, the mightiest magic! Explosion!!!!"
Megumin shouts as the isekai duo see the flashing lights flicker, brighter and faster until they all collide with each other and the vortex collapses itself around the frog, resulting in a massive explosion akin to an atomic bomb.
The force of which, produces raging winds as the frog disintegrates from the sheer destruction.
Kazuma looks at the resulting crater in awe.
"Whoa. Now that's what I call magic."
Suddenly, rumbling occurs at a distance as six giant frogs emerge from the ground and approach the group in the distance.
"Uh oh. Looks like the noise from the spell caused the other frogs to wake up. Megumin, we should -" Before he could continue, Kazuma turns to see Megumin face down on the grass as one frog approaches her.
"Casting explosion... drains all my mana, causing me... to be immobile."
"Huh?" Kazuma baffles at what Megumin admits, with the frog closing in on her.
"Uh oh... It looks like on of the frogs are going to eat me... Could one of you-"
The toad takes her in its mouth and slowly begins swallowing her.
"Hey Kazuma." Av'Rick suddenly appears behind Kazuma, still carrying Aqua, startling him.
"You should save her, I'll take care of the five others. You're gonna need to get stronger too, if we both going to pick up the slack, since Aqua and Megumin can't do anything at the moment."
Av'Rick's right, both of their party members are down for the count and It's up to them to keep fighting. Getting over his startling, Kazuma's face shifts into one of determination. There's no way he's going to stand here and be useless like Aqua.
"Yeah, you're right. Good luck."
Kazuma runs towards the frog with his weapon to save Megumin.
Av'Rick looks down to the crying Goddess in his arms.
"Hey Aqua, a bunch of frogs are coming to get us."
"Noooo!!! Don't let them eat me! I don't wanna be eaten again!" She cries, hugging him tightly and crying hysterically.
"You're going to have let me go so I can kill them. If you don't, I won't be able to protect you from them, since holding you is restricting my movement." Av'Rick reasons.
After a few seconds, Aqua loosens her grip and Av'Rick gently places her down.
Rolling his shoulders again, Av'Rick faces the closest frog heading towards them, with Aqua watching from behind.
Since he's going to be fighting this many opponents, it's time to use his second of the three other skills he learned last night.
Closing his eyes, Av'Rick focuses on his mind and bodily processes and accelerates them, with his new Overclocking Lv. 9 skill.
Overclocking: A skill created through Body Supremacy, which enables the user to kick their physiological function and coordination into overdrive. All current stats increase by 100% when active. Increased levels increase acceleration of mental and bodily processes.
Time begins to slow down in Av'Rick's point of view, as Overclocking accelerates his thought processes. The frogs hopping becomes slower, Kazuma slicing through the frog swallowing Megumin becomes slower and Aqua just blinks very slowly, waiting to see how he'll defeat the frogs.
Using Motion Concentration, Av'Rick pushes of the ground again and dashes towards the closest frog, leaving Aqua to wipe of the resulting debris in slow motion.
Just like before, Av'Rick uses Strength Concentration to punch the frog's skull off its spine. Only this time, he uses the momentum of the impact as leverage to jump off the frog and launch himself to the next, repeating the process.
Meanwhile, Kazuma, who just finished saving Megumin, stares at the massacre that's occurring in shock. His eyes following the speeding, object flying through the air, bouncing off the frogs resulting in their deaths. Just when he thought Av'Rick couldn't surprise him anymore, he proceeds to effortlessly kill multiple giant frogs. Just how much of a cheat is his Self Supremacy?
As the last of the frogs are slain, Av'Rick returns to the group, deactivating his Overclocking, he begins to pant and places his hands on his knees. Using Overclocking, may increase his stats temporarily, but the cost for this power is that he'll fatigue quicker. Luckily, his Efficient Body reduces the drawback significantly, otherwise he'd end up like Megumin, who is being given a piggyback ride by Kazuma.
The girl, who is also staring at Av'Rick wide eyed. Is this guy really a beginner like his friends? He moved so fast, she could barely see his movements. Was he some sort of rogue? No, rogues wouldn't possess such abnormal strength to be able to punch off a giant frog's head. A fighter? That couldn't be it either, none of his movements indicated any skill associated with that class.
"Take that!"
Megumin's trail of thoughts is interrupted when she hears Aqua's yelling. The trio turn their heads to see Aqua kicking one the frog corpses.
"That's what you get for messing with a Goddess!"
And said Goddess proceeds to kick the corpses again triumphantly, acting as if she's the one who took them down.
But, karma seems to seek justice upon the so called 'Goddess', which results in a giant frog, who was still sleeping the whole time and didn't wake up until after the battle, suddenly rises from the ground, behind Aqua and attempts to swallow her.
Time slows down again, Kazuma and Megumin slowly form shocked faces, and Aqua slowly turns her around in surprise. Av'Rick didn't have much time, Overclocking tuckered him out too much to be effective this time, forcing him to use the last skill he created last night.
Focusing on his right leg, Av'Rick causes his leg to become very blurry, then he preforms a roundhouse kick in the air, which causes a blade of air to be fired from his leg. The blade rushes towards the frog, who's almost about to swallow her. Just before Aqua is going to another meal for the fourth time, the blade of air passes through the frog's neck and dissipates afterwards.
The frogs head slowly slides down off body to the right, and a fountain of blood spouts out from where its head used to be, before its body falls to the side.
The last skill Av'Rick learned last night is called Bodily Frequency Control (Lv. 16).
Bodily Frequency Control: A skill created through Body Supremacy, which enables the user to control all of their bodily frequencies, including motion, vibrations, oscillations, etc. Higher levels increase the range frequency that can produced.
With this skill, Av'Rick can turn any part of his body into a razor sharp weapon. And making his leg sharp enough enabled him to cut through the air, resulting in a vacuum effect, creating the blade of air.
Anyway, back to the story.
After turning around and seeing the frog's head being cut off, Aqua immediately falls to the ground on her hands and knees. Her face contorting an expression of someone going through PTSD. An appropriate expression, considering the fact that she's been through this three other times and almost suffered a fourth.
"Hey, you alright?" Av'Rick asks, as he approaches the traumatised Goddess, exhausted from all the skills he's used today.
Slowly turning her head towards him, Aqua's lips begin to quiver, before she lunges towards him and clings onto him for dear life and cries on his shirt. Again.
"Thank you Av'Rick! I almost got eaten again!" She cries.
Av'Rick just stands her, his expression, blank as always. He just stands there and lets her bawl her eyes out, lifting one hand and placing it on her head, petting her like a dog. Again (you get the idea, a lot of stuff happens again in this chapter, because comedy comes twos and threes).
Turning his head towards Kazuma, Av'Rick raises his other hand and gives him a thumbs up whilst giving him a flat stare.
Kazuma reciprocates the gesture whilst smiling wryly at him. He just wants to cash in the frog kills and call it a day now, after seeing Av'Rick's and Megumin's ludicrous performance.
Axel - Some random street
As they are walking back to the guild, Kazuma, who is still carrying Megumin on his back, asks the Archwizard to not use her Explosion magic again, unless it's an emergency, since casting it causes her to lose all her magic energy and become immobile.
Megumin's response to this reasonable request is a flat response, saying that she can't. This causes everyone to stop walking, and when questioned about what she means, she replies by saying that Explosion magic is the only magic she can use.
This results in an awkward silence, that lasts for long, that a girl chasing a two geese runs past them.
When questioned again, this time about why she only knows such an advanced and powerful spell, Megumin begins to rant about how she loves Explosion, how she only became an Archwizard to learn Explosion, how the other spells in the detonation branch of the spells suck compared to Explosion, etc, etc.
When she finishes her speech, another silence ensues, before Aqua speaks up, saying how she's moved by her passion and dedication no matter how bonkers her goal is.
Kazuma, isn't as moved. Instead, he just sees her as completely useless, since she can only use one powerful spell a day and refuses to learn others, on her basis that she really likes that one spell. If someone like Aqua understands where she's coming from she has to be. The last thing he needs is another Aqua in his life.
As for Av'Rick.
"Huh... So you only like Explosion magic because you like feeling helpless and weak after you use it." Is what Av'Rick concludes from Megumin's speech.
A conclusion that got the other three party members to turn their heads in his direction.
"What!? That's not why I use it! I like Explosion magic because it's the most powerful and amazing spell."
"...So you use the Explosion magic for its power?"
"Yes, exactly!"
"A power that leaves you vulnerable after casting it, a power that you can only use once a day."
"...Yes?"
"The same power that's preventing you from joining other parties."
"...Um..." Megumin begins to shift on Kazuma's back, feeling uncomfortable at these accurate remarks that Av'Rick is making, his montone voice, making it even more discomforting.
"This power, I'm assuming, is what lead you to be desperate enough to accept the suspicious recruitment poster that no one else chose, due to its design resembling what a child would have drawn."
"Hey! That poster was my best one." Aqua complains.
"A power that, I'm again assuming, you learned because you've seen it first hand, from someone else when they saved you from a monster."
"W-wait, how did you-" But Av'Rick cuts Megumin off.
"I noticed it by our time together with you. As far as I know, thanks to Aqua,-" Aqua puffs her chest out in pride, forgetting that Av'Rick insulted her artistic talents, "- Crimson Demons have high intelligence, so you must have a lot of common sense, since those two things tend to correlate with each other. And, since having high intelligence means having huge amounts of mana, it must mean that Crimson Demons almost never bother learning basic spells and only learn intermediate to advanced spells, since you must see basic spells as a waste of mana." Av'Rick deduces, shocking Megumin at his accurate speculations.
"So, with high mana, you could have chosen practically any spell you wanted, but chose Explosion magic. A spell that leaves you completely drained of mana, making you vulnerable to any number of potential dangers. In spite of having more common sense, compared to anyone who isn't a Crimson Demon, you still chose that spell, even though you could have easily chosen another detonation spell which, while weaker, could be easily improved, to the point it rivals Explosion magic."
After saying that, Megumin realises that Av'Rick is right, there are other spells that produce similar effects to Explosion magic albeit weaker, she could spend her skill points to make them stronger to rival her favourite spell.
"But, based on your faulty logic on why you use Explosion magic,-" Megumin flinches at him mentioning that, "- despite your high intelligence, its obvious you've seen Explosion magic before, back when you were a young and impressionable girl. However that's not enough. In order for you to throw away logic and reasoning, you must have seen Explosion magic at a crucial moment in your childhood to leave such an impact. The most likely scenario is that you were attacked by a monster and then someone used Explosion magic to defeat, saving you and inspiring you to learn it yourself in their honour." Av'Rick concludes.
"Is that true Megumin?" Kazuma asks Archwizard over his shoulder.
Megumin doesn't say anything, she just looks away with a flustered expression, as a result of Av'Rick's disturbingly accurate deductions.
Kazuma sighs, finally understanding why she would learn something as useless as Explosion, regardless of how powerful it is. If he was attacked by a monster when he was a kid, then someone using something as flashy as Explosion magic to save his life would look like the coolest thing he has ever seen.
And by Av'Rick's account, Megumin was desperate enough to join their little rag tag team as a result of knowing just one spell that leaves her vulnerable afterwards. So everyone else probably rejected her after seeing what she could do, even if she's an Archwizard, leaving her alone. She became an outcast, like he once was back in Japan.
Now it's getting hard to be irritated at her for what happened today.
"Ok, fine." Kazuma said, "You can stay in our party, but only if you increase your mana so you can cast Explosion more than once a day. I don't want to carry you back to town everyday." He compromises.
Megumin turns her head back to him, a wide smile slowly forming on her face.
"Really?! Thank you so much Kazuma! I Megumin, the greatest Archwizard of the Crimson Demons, promise you that I will increase my mana capacity so as to cast Explosion magic at our enemies as many times as you want." Megumin declares, returning back to her theatrical demeanour.
Which is promptly shut down when her stomach rumbles, causing her to face to flush again.
"Um, Kazuma... If it's not too much, could you please keep giving me meals as well?" She asks meekly.
With a heavy sigh with the choices he's made so far, Kazuma reluctantly agrees with Megumin's request. It could always be worse, Megumin could take advantage of the fact she's covered in slime and slander his reputation.
A shiver runs down his back at that thought. Somehow, he's pretty sure that Megumin is desperate enough to humiliate him in public if he didn't take her in.
And with that Kazuma, Av'Rick and Aqua have Megumin joining their ranks to help defeat the Devil King.
As they resume walking back to the Guild, Aqua turns her head towards Av'Rick.
"Hey Av'Rick, I've been meaning to ask, how were you able to fight off all those frogs on your own like that? Aren't you at a low level like Kazuma?"
"Meh. I just can. Anyway, let's get back to the Guild and cash in those frog kills. I'm sure we'll get double the reward money for them."
And just like that, Aqua suddenly moves towards Kazuma and Megumin, urging them to move faster towards the guild to collect the reward money.
Av'Rick stares at the three, his face still showing impassivity. The reason for giving the Goddess a vague answer and avoiding the subject is that he doesn't want his abilities to be known to everyone. Or, at the very least, be strong enough that everyone knowing about what he can do becomes a minor inconvenience.
Call him overly cautious, but being in an less technologically advanced world with innumerable and unknowable dangers, doesn't make it seem like it's a good idea for others to know how he's capable of performing Herculean feats of strength, or moving faster than the mind could process.
Telling someone like Aqua, who he's only known for over a day but still has a good grasp of her character, will most likely be a guaranteed way for unwanted attention to be directed at him, when she gossips that his Self Supremacy, a skill that let's one create more skills, is here in Axel.
If the worst comes and he's forced to explain how can do the irregular, then he could always chalk it up to magic. With how mundane it is, saying that the reason he could kill a giant frog from a distance with a blade of wind was with magic, no one would be suspicious. Apart from the fact that a nobody beginner was the culprit, but he'll cross that bridge when he gets to it.
It's inevitable that with these skills, Av'Rick will have SOME form of reputation based on what kind of skills the majority of Axel will see him use. And when that happens, he just hopes it won't attract anyone major in this bizarre world.
As his three teammates start walking back to the Guild, after Kazuma and Aqua argue with something he wasn't paying attention to, and with Megumin still piggybacking Kazuma, Av'Rick catches up to them, mentally preparing for the challenges he'll have to face in order to defeat the Devil King, with his new (and only) friends.
OK, that's a wrap for this Chapter.
Once again, sorry for taking so long, I kind of hit the infamous 'writer's block' and struggled how to Megumin and Av'Rick would interact with each other. It's not easy figuring out how an Explosion-loving Chunibyo reacts to teen whose mind operates on an entirely different framework, whilst also expressing no outward emotions.
But, I did it, and now will move on to the next chapter to introduce the character, who is the main reason why this fanfic has an M rating in the first place. As well as other fanfics that feature her.
Now then, any questions about this chapter that involves my oc acting strange is not allowed to be ask. It just means I've been portraying his character exactly how I want it to be. Someone who is so weird, that even other weirdos find him odd, confusing, or frustrating to understand.
However, feel free to comment on how I portray the other characters. I don't want them to be too ooc to their canon counterparts. I want them to react exactly how they would in canon to a person weirder than the fanatical Axis Cult or the theatrical Crimson Demon Clan.
Moving on, it's time for me to discuss about the new powers my oc created I this chapter.
These are not the most powerful abilities that I saw on the Superpowers Wiki website. There are much more op abilities than the one you've seen in this chapter, and I'll show them in later chapters. Also, I didn't choose these powers randomly. They will show up again in the future, and help my oc and his party.
Ok, I think that's enough of this Author's Note. I'll get started on the next chapter as soon as possible, and hopefully, post it earlier than this one.
So in the words of Wally Franks: I'm Outta Here
