1 Team DiNozzo: beyond Gibbs' retirement

When Gibbs suddenly retires after terrorist attacks, the MCRT team is overwhelmed. Tony takes over as team leader and makes some changes to the team and his personal life. Ziva and Tony redefine their connection. A shocking case unnerves Ziva and leads her to seek an emotional outlet in the only way she knows.

4. Chapter 4

Chapter 4 – Three is company

Late July 2006. "Agent DiNozzo, may I see you in my office please?" director Jenny Shephard commands from halfway down the open u-shapes staircase leading from the third to the second floor. She can see the whole squad room from there, with a front row view of the MCRT, whose four desks are laid out in a rectangular space at the bottom of the stairs. She quickly turns on her heels and heads back upstairs, followed within seconds by the interim SSA of the MCRT. As Jenny turns onto the walkway, she catches a glimpse of agents McGee and David exchanging puzzled looks.

DiNozzo is barely in the door when he starts, "Whatever you heard, ma'am, I can assure you that …" Director Shephard tries to intervene by putting up her hand, then adds in her soft voice, "Relax, Tony, there is nothing I need to discipline you for, is there? You have shown much growth in leadership, and I know you are a skilled special agent." Tony eases up and sits down upon Jenny's gesture.
