I love Corazon that's why I always give him an important role in my fics, I did not expect to wait 28 chapters to introduce him in this story, in any case I decided to change a lot of things in the plot, it's going to be a bit complicated but I'd rather do that than slap the end of the story.
Chapter 28: Escape.
As Penguin changed his bandage, Law felt his senses had all deactivated, all he could hear was the sound of his own unsteady and rapid breathing while his vision darkened as the ceiling he was looking at was totally blurry. Law began to count the damage in his body as he was lying down for the first time after hours of physical exertion, his head pounding like a drum from lack of sleep and accumulated stress, the lack of rest had numbed all his muscles and made his injury worse, even the pain no longer bothered him because he had grown used to feeling it.
Law was tired both physically and mentally, but he was much more preoccupied with thinking about the consequences that the new story will cause, if it gets to Doflamingo's ears, he will have to say goodbye to all the efforts he made to get closer to him because the man will find out about the shenanigans going on behind his back. Stealing a cargo destined for Kaido was the dumbest decision Law had made in his life, it was a misstep, he had rushed in without protecting his back and he had forgotten his main purpose of destroying Doflamingo.
Because of that problem, Law had to rush to implement his plan to bring down Doflamingo, he couldn't waste any more time playing because he had a bad feeling, until he healed, he was going to take the opportunity to prepare and think about the big blow he was going to do, but before that he was going to have to find a way to get Nami back and kill Hawkins because those were his two priorities, otherwise he won't even have time to prepare for a war against Doflamingo.
Law rolled his eyes when he heard the sound of a car engine breaking the silence of the night, he felt irritated before he remembered the gravity of the situation. He would have been hoping to get some more rest before Corazon's arrival, which had apparently been soon, and it was a good thing he was taking the situation very seriously to come so late and not wait until the next day, he was really alarmed and that was understandable, Law was like a son to him, so he was going to do anything to help him solve his problems.
Law could hear footsteps running towards him and shortly after Corazon entered his room while he was out of breath, his face was very pale especially without his usual makeup, Law nodded at Penguin to that he leaves them alone.
"Damn, Law, you are really terrible," Corazon noticed as he moved closer to the lying man. "How are you?"
"I'm fine." Law whispered, being careful not to raise his voice too much so as not to make his pain worse.
"Now explain everything to me very well because I don't understand anything anymore!" The blonde wasted no time because he was impatient.
"As I said earlier, Hawkins is holding Nami-ya hostage and he says he will take her to Doflamingo." Law was careful to say the essential details because he didn't have the strength to repeat the long story from the start.
"Nami!" Corazon echoed with wide eyes. "If I remember correctly her full name is Nami Bell," He said in a low voice, mostly to himself. "Do you know why I asked you not to kill her?"
Law didn't know the answer to that question, he remembered Corazon didn't want him to kill Nami when he was ordered to do so, at that time he spared her by his own will not because of the request of Corazon who had surely taken pity on her because she was a woman. But now he realized that the man had another reason to protect Nami.
"Damn," The older man swore, feeling that his legs couldn't carry him anymore from his previous run, he sat down in the chair next to the bed. "When you sent me the files of your targets, I found out that Nami is the daughter of an old acquaintance who worked with me in the police, that's why I asked you not to kill her and to let her go, but you kept her with you."
"I saved the woman's miserable life," The dark-haired man pointed out with a frown, not appreciating the fact that Corazon hid from him that he knew Nami's mother. "She was just a drug addict with nowhere to go."
"She could have done it somewhere else, not in a town full of Mafia," Corazon argued before heaving a sigh. "I know you wanted to protect her, I don't blame you."
"You have to find her," Law murmured with a stiff expression on his face, but the shaking in his voice showed his emotions. "It's because of me that she got into this situation, it's not her responsibility to pay for my mistakes."
"My men have started the search, but I don't think Hawkins is going to be found easily," Corazon spoke more calmly than a while ago. "Tomorrow morning I'm going to visit Crocodile, maybe he'll take us to Hawkins."
"I don't think he's going to collaborate with you." Law growled.
"Crocodile is greedy, I would find a way to bribe him," The blond frowned. "What worries me is that Hawkins won't be able to be found even with Crocodile's help, I'm sure he'll take his precautions."
"So you know Nami-ya's mother?" Law asked, unable to stop his curiosity.
"Yeah, she was a very strong woman and a great cop," Corazon replied as his gaze turned sad. "She was a friend too, that's why I'm going to do my best to save her daughter."
"Nami-ya knows how to fend for herself, I'm sure she's looking for a way to escape," Law tried to cheer herself up thinking about the woman's abilities. "She's not the type to wait for someone to save her."
"I'll let you rest," The blonde said as he stood up, remembering that Law has had a hard day and that he was hurt too. "Hawkins research is ongoing, we have to wait."
"Okay," Law accepted with great pleasure because his body needed to recover, plus when an insomniac like him wanted to sleep, it meant he was too tired. "Good night."
"Good night to you too." Corazon wished back before leaving the room.
Nami started to open her eyes slowly when she felt water splash on her face, she was paralyzed because she could not move due to her muscles which seemed to weigh heavier and her head was pounding wildly, that's why, it took her a little while to become aware of her surroundings. Like a grim reaper, she saw Hawkins standing above her head, holding a mug in his hand that probably contained the water that had woke her up. Now she remembered her situation very well, she was a hostage to the freak watching her and she was in a shitty state because she had taken drugs the day before.
Nami felt like she was in a dream because she felt like she didn't have a physical presence, she was still sleepy and she couldn't control her body, but she knew it was wrong and what she was seeing was not an illusion. With great effort and slowly, she managed to sit up, ignoring the rage that was going on inside her skull that was about to explode.
"Why did you wet my face? This is no way to wake someone up asleep," She complained between moans, massaging her temples in hopes of reducing her headache. "And what time is it?"
"It's seven o'clock and water was the only way I found to get you out of a coma." Hawkins explained, giving her a superior look.
"Oh shit my head, do I look like a person who wakes up at seven in the morning?" She growled before turning to the man. "Why are you waking me up so early?"
"It's time for you to leave this place." He replied briefly, not bothering to explain.
"Okay," She happily agreed to leave the crappy cell she was in. "Hope it's a better place than this and clean too." She spoke to herself as she stood up, deep inside she knew he was going to take her to Doflamingo, she avoided thinking about it.
"I see you appreciated my gift." He remarked after seeing the empty syringe thrown on the floor.
"Hope you have another gift like this, I really need a pick-me-up." She said without hesitation, hoping her captor would give her what she wanted.
"I knew you were going to ask for more," Hawkins pointed out before pulling out a small sachet that had white powder inside. "Consume it moderately, it's still early in the day," He added as he started to walk towards the exit. "Follow me now."
"Cool, at least I'll get rid of that damn headache." She rejoiced before following him, gazing at the bag in her hands in admiration.
As they left the building, Nami's eyes started to burn her from the daylight, she took advantage of taking deep breaths, she filled her lungs with fresh air, taking the opportunity to be out of jail momentarily because she knew she was going to be jailed somewhere else again. Nami had also inspected her surroundings and felt disappointed when she found out where she was, contrary to her assumptions, she was not in an old school, it was an old import export company.
The moment she got into the black car parked in the driveway, a lamp lit above Nami's head and she knew it was the perfect time to plan an escape because it was a golden opportunity, Hawkins was not in the car with her, apparently he had ordered two of his men to take her to her next prison, besides, the kidnappers didn't take her for a dangerous girl and they underestimated her. She was sitting in the back seat of a car with her arms free eating a sandwich while she planned in her head. After some thought, she decided to use the knife in her boot and use it to stab the guard who was sitting in the passenger seat, then she'll deal with the driver and make him stop. It was the only idea that was spinning in her head.
Nami didn't like violence, but unfortunately it was the only plan that could work, plus now was not the time to be sensitive and feel pity for her captors, if she didn't do anything she was going to be taken to Doflamingo and if things turned out badly she could be killed, besides, she was tired of being treated as a thing and not as an independent person.
Feeling her heart tighten as she sneaked the knife out of her boot before hiding it under her right thigh to prepare it. She was afraid of not succeeding, that's why she decided to boost her courage with a little drugs, in addition, it was a diversion for the two men to believe that she is stoned and they will not expect that she attacks them. With her index finger, she picked up some powder and sniffed it loudly so they could hear her, it wasn't a dose she couldn't handle because she was used to more.
After hearing her sniffle, the two men gave her haughty looks over their shoulders but they didn't say anything, it was as Nami wanted, they were so blinded by their testosterones that they would never assume a female drug addict would try to kill them. Unfortunately for Nami, her fear was not gone despite the drugs she took, which is why she decided to act without further delay as she was afraid that they would arrive at their destination soon.
When she put her hand on the knife under her thigh, everything started to slow down in her eyes and she regained consciousness when a wave of hot blood washed over her face after she stabbed the man in the passenger seat in his jugular vein, after that, she didn't know if it was she who was in control of her body or some evil being took hold of her. Quickly she snatched the pistol from the hand of the man she had killed and pointed it at the head of the driver who was apparently about to pull a pistol from his belt.
"If you move I'll kill you," Nami threatened the driver as she looked left and right to see if anyone had witnessed her crime, she felt relieved when she remembered the windows were tinted, besides, the road was deserted because it was early in the morning and they were in a kind of forest. "Continue to drive for now." She added before snatching the gun from his belt.
"You bitch, I'm gonna kill you." He spat, accelerating.
At this point, Nami wasn't sure if she had gone mad or maybe the violence had risen to her head because she fired a shot at the man's arm without even having a hint of hesitation, luckily she had learned to wield a weapon in the past.
"Stop the car!" She ordered the man as she rejoiced when she heard him scream.
Lucky for him he stopped because Nami was about to fire a second bullet at him.
"Get out of this fucking car before I kill you!" She threatened him with a shout as she began to be blinded more and more by the aggressiveness, it was not her habit, but she felt pleasure holding a gun in her hand and a lot of pleasure shooting at a live target. "And keep your hands up if you don't want to be killed."
When the driver got off, Nami jumped into the front seat and when she was about to leave, she noticed that the man she kindly left alive had pulled a phone out of his pocket while he slowly walked away from the car. Unfortunately, this mistake cost him his life because Nami got out of the vehicle quickly and she started shooting at him without stopping until the magazine was empty, because she lacked experience aiming at a target from a distance.
After that, Nami started to ride without having a precise destination because she did not know where she was exactly, besides the inside of her was totally broken because she had fallen into a black abyss. Every time she looked at the lifeless man next to her she broke even more because she was the one who had killed him. She wanted to throw up because of the taste of blood in her mouth and every time she looked in the rearview mirror she felt like she had come straight out of a horror movie, she had literally taken a bloodbath, her face and hair was red and sticky from the blood that had dried on her skin.
To calm down a bit, she stopped the car and started to breathe in and out, then she picked up the little drug bag that was in the back seat and took a stronger dose than the previous one. When she relaxed, she decided to look for a phone to contact Law because she knew it was dangerous to keep driving around in a stolen car with a dead body and covered in blood. Unfortunately she was forced to search the deceased because the best place to find what she was looking for was his pockets.
When she finally found a phone, she was relieved that the device unlocked easily without a pattern or passcode. Quickly she called her phone number, praying that Law or someone else would keep it with him.
"Hello, Law is it you." She cried when the call was picked up.
"It's me Shachi..."
"Help me Shachi, I don't know where I am and I killed the guys that were with me, I'm in total trouble," She interrupted him panicking, not even bothering to breathe. "I don't know what to do, I'm afraid they'll find me."
"Easy Nami," He tried to calm her down, she could tell from his voice that he was running. "We'll come get you, don't worry."
"I don't know where I am!" She spat as she looked around her. "All I can say is that I am in a gigantic deserted forest because there is no passing car and the trees are unusually tall."
"A gigantic deserted forest!" Shachi echoed as he took a moment to think. "It must be Little Garden Forest." He added before his voice began to fade as he was apparently talking to someone else.
"Nami-ya!" Law looked surprised as he said her name. "How are you?"
"I'm bad, bad and super bad," She answered hysterically, wanting to insult Law because he had asked her a stupid question. "Come get me quickly."
"Can you locate this number?" She heard Law ask someone else, who apparently was with him.
"Damn Law are you listening to me?" Nami started to get impatient when Law continued chatting with a man from what she could hear, completely forgetting about her.
"Yes yes I am here," He replied quickly. "We'll locate you, so don't hang up." When he took a break, she felt relieved to hear the man move, giving her hope that he was coming to pick her up. "Shachi says you might be in Little Garden."
"I don't know," She growled annoyedly, she was a newbie in Raftel, that's why she didn't know where she was. "All I can tell you is that I'm in a gigantic, fucking uncrowded forest."
"Don't worry, we'll find you," He reassured her in a gentle tone. "In the meantime, tell me everything that happened with you."
"Hawkins woke me up this morning and put me in a car with two of his men to take me somewhere," She began as she recalled the dark part of the story. "I used a knife hidden in my boot to stab one of the guys and I killed the second with the gun I stole from the first." She spoke slowly because her vision grew cloudy and everything started to turn in her eyes, the drug she had snorted to calm herself started to take effect, which is why Nami felt more relaxed and light.
"We have located your position," He rejoiced after someone told him the news, not noticing the change in Nami's behavior. "We're on our way now."
"It's good." She moaned before being invaded by an involuntary wave of laughter.
"What's wrong?" He asked with a worried tone.
"I feel good," She replied happily as she looked at the small pouch that contained the drug with a smile. "Very good." She gasped before hiding the pouch in her chest, so Law wouldn't take it because she knew he was going to starve her off the drugs.
"That's a good thing," He commented suspiciously. "Nami-ya!" He called when she stopped speaking. "Nami-ya! Nami!"
"I don't want to talk anymore." She moaned, keeping her eyes closed, wanting to take advantage of the moment of respite. "I want to hear you speak."
"Okay," Law growled in response. "Just don't hang up, if something happens tell me."
Nami continued to enjoy the moment of relaxation, completely forgetting where she was and what she had been through, all she knew was that she was well and at peace.
