Chapter 31: Confession of love.
Law was furious and he had been in this state for a week, unable to calm the anger that grew more and more inside him with time. He was like a time bomb that was going to explode soon, that's why he decided to avoid everyone and especially the one that caused his fury, it was the best solution not to tire his nerves even more.
For the last seven days, Law had used the opportunity to recover energy for his wound to heal and he had occupied his mind planning his future plans, avoiding thinking of a certain woman with orange hair who was going to live far, far away tomorrow morning.
He didn't mind Nami leaving and he didn't really care. Well that was what he was trying to make himself believe, she was just a woman like the others and she was nothing special, besides, she was full of flaws that even the ten fingers of his two hands won't be enough to count them all. Normally Law should be relieved to get rid of her because she was a real pain in the ass, but his fucking heart couldn't stand him parting with her. Love affairs have always been an extremely stupid thing to him and now when he was at an age where he normally got past that kid stuff, the surgeon of death was having heartache.
Law felt like a great chasm had appeared out of nowhere between him and the woman, pulling Nami away from him before she even left for East Blue. First, Corazon had decided to take the woman under his wing and that was reason enough for him to stay away from her because he respected the man a lot and he couldn't be against him. The second reason was that the woman still continued to challenge him despite knowing his feelings for her. Nami had jumped at the first opportunity to run away from him knowing he couldn't stop her now because of Corazon, which meant she had no regard for him and that, that was enough to ignite the dynamite of anger that lay in Law's heart, after that all rationality left his mind and there was only madness left that blinded him.
From the next day, Law was going to consider Nami dead to stop thinking about her and tear her out of his heart permanently, he could no longer continue to attach himself to the woman and put himself in a position of weakness because of her. It was already enough for him to put up with the whispers of his men behind his back as they said that their boss hasn't been the same since Nami's arrival, and unfortunately it was the truth, the ice that covered his heart had melted after he fell in love with the woman and he started acting like an idiot, trying to fight the feelings that were growing inside of him by having a stupid fight with the redhead. He fell so low because of her and he did a lot of things without thinking, just to make her react.
Two knock on his door brought him out of his deep thoughts and he remembered he was reading a book, not understanding any sentences due to his lack of concentration. When he heard another knock he sighed as he felt the irritation heating his brain, he had told his men not to disturb him unless there was an emergency.
"Come in," Law growled as he adjusted his position in his bed, whoever was bothering him was not going to stand up for him. "What's the emergency?" He arched an eyebrow as Shachi entered the room.
"Are you not ready?" Shachi asked in surprise, not understanding why his boss was still in his bed and seeing the stiff face of the dark haired man, he understood why no one wanted to call Law and his comrades sent him to do the dirty work.
"Ready for what?" Law asked back when he already knew the answer to the question.
"Nami's farewell party," Shachi responded hesitantly, trying to swallow saliva as his mouth was dry, he was starting to fear the murderous aura his boss gave off. "Everyone is waiting for you." He added slowly as he mentally prepared himself for the explosion of the man in front of him.
"I'm not going to participate in that stupidity," The Surgeon Of Death spat, finally finding a victim he was going to vent his anger on. "And I think I told you not to disturb me except for an emergency, is that an emergency for you?"
"In a way, this is an emergency for you." Shachi mumbled after mustering little courage to retort, he could feel every muscle in his body shaking from the killer gaze sent by his boss.
"Why is this an emergency for me?" Law asked with a castling voice that seemed to come from the depths of hell.
"Nami is going to be gone tomorrow and I think you have to say goodbye to her," Shachi said cautiously, preparing for a possible escape if his boss attacked him. "You behave like a kid deprived of his favorite toy, if you don't want her to go so badly, stop her." After he finished speaking, he noticed that he had gotten a little too carried away with the emotion.
"Are you looking to die or what!?" Law growled as his whole face crumpled, scaring his subordinate even more. "I don't care if the woman leaves or stays, that's not my problem and to tell you the truth I'm happy to get rid of her after all." He cried out until throbbing veins appeared on his long neck.
"With all due respect boss, I find your behavior stupid and insane," Shachi continued his attempts to reason with his boss who has a hard brain. "Sulking in a corner like a child isn't going to help matters for you." He knew he crossed the line, but despite that, he won't give up.
"Thank you doctor," Law nodded sarcastically, not wanting to show his subordinate that he had been touched by his words. "Do you want to leave my room now before I blast your face?" He growled, adding a note to his sarcasm.
"Hope you change your mind." Shachi muttered under his breath as he rushed out of the room, leaving his boss fuming with rage.
It was the last straw that broke the camel's back, now his subordinates disrespected him because of the woman and that was a confirmation of the bad effect she had on him. Trafalgar Law, the surgeon of death was being lectured by one of his men because he had to put himself down and go say goodbye to Nami, the woman who wanted to go and live a normal life because she was fed up with crime. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't stop her from leaving because she was right, it was for her good to get away from the Mafia and the danger it caused.
Law had exaggerated in his reaction the day Nami said she was leaving and it was humiliating for him because he had lost his temper in the presence of Corazon, and again he found himself explaining to the man what his relationship with Nami was about and trying to make him believe he had platonic feelings for her. Law had vowed to cut his tongue if he spoke again without thinking because he was getting more and more out of control.
The surgeon of death resumed his reading and this time he forced himself to concentrate despite the din that came from the party, trying to isolate himself in an invisible soundproof bubble. Law ignored the unbearable inconvenience and continued to devour the pages of the book one by one, and when he was reading chapter thirty-one, he almost jumped when the door swung open. He didn't even bother to look up to see who was visiting him because there was only one person who never knocked on the door before entering.
"What do you want Nami-ya?" He asked calmly, narrowing his eyes as he looked at the book to keep his look cool.
"How do you know it's me? Do you have eyes in your hair or what?" She chuckled before closing the door the same way she opened it.
"There is only you who enter without knocking." He replied, looking at her for the first time since arriving, her cheeks were tinged pink from the alcohol she drank and her outfit was a little too sexy, even he couldn't resist in the face of such beauty and sensuality, luckily he had spent a week strengthening his mind, otherwise he would fall into the witch's clutches yet again.
"There are no two like me." She smiled as she slowly approached Law, like a predator preparing to pounce on its prey.
"What do you want Nami-ya?" He repeated the question he had asked before, his serious voice showing that he did not appreciate the unexpected visit of the woman.
"I came to spend some time with you," She answered before sitting down next to him on the bed, looking at him with wide open chocolate brown eyes. "As you probably know, tomorrow I'm going to East Blue, that's why I thought about stopping the cold war we're waging and making peace, She paused as she smiled warmly at him waiting for a response from the man, but unfortunately he remained silent with a stiff expression on his face. "Come on Law, I don't want to leave you mad at me and I can't see why you are mad already."
"So you don't know why?" Law asked, closing the book in his hands tightly.
"I don't remember doing anything wrong." She whispered with a grimace that proved the opposite of what she was saying.
"You've done a lot of things, I don't even know where to start," He growled with a lifted smile, totally focusing on the woman next to him. "First of all, you took drugs again when I broke my ass to cure you of your addiction."
"It's Hawkins' fault not mine," Nami tried to justify herself, quickly interrupting him. "Besides, I was too scared, it was the only way to calm myself down."
"Then you made my injury worse by hugging me, like I was going to run away," He added condescendingly, smiling inwardly as the woman's face change color. "All because of the drugs you have consumed."
"It's not my fault, I was under the influence of drugs." She continued to justify herself despite knowing she screwed up.
"You also decided to leave without even considering my opinion." He growled before falling silent to force Nami to answer him.
"Technically I was still under the influence of drugs, which is why I forgot to ask your opinion." She lied, avoiding making eye contact with the man.
"But in all of this, I haven't told you yet what's the worst thing you've done." He said after heaving a long sigh, not believing he was going to do such a thing.
"What?" She asked when he lingered on continuing, her eyes widening with the apprehension that was gnawing at her from within.
"I must admit that you deserve your reputation as a thief," He whispered enigmatically, his golden eyes couldn't help but stare at the parted lips of the woman next to him, and his nose couldn't resist the citrus scent that had turned narcotic to him. "You stole my heart."
"Oh!" Nami moaned as she froze, her already wide eyes doubling in size, she expected all but not a declaration of love from the surgeon of death himself.
"I don't wanna pretend that I'm not attracted to you anymore and I don't wanna pretend that I don't want you anymore," Law started to utter words coming out of his mouth which had gone out of control, his mind was possessed by Nami's bewitchment and because of that he could no longer filter what he was saying. "I don't want to hold back anymore from kissing you and I don't want to silence the wild beating of my heart when I'm near you anymore," He paused to admire the shocked woman's reaction to his words. "I don't want to lie to myself and say I don't love you, because the truth is, I'm crazy about you."
It was over, Law had emptied everything that was compressed in his chest and although part of him regretted the act, he was relieved to say for the first time how he felt for Nami. Although she looked like she had a bug in her brain because she was like a statue, with tears streaming from her eyes.
"What! Tears?!" Law thought when he became aware of the liquid flowing from the woman's eyes.
"Law," She moaned between sobs, unable to control the wave of emotion that was like a tsunami devastating her interior. "These are the most beautiful words I have heard in my entire life," She paused to wipe the tears from her face with the back of her hand. "Damn, I'm ashamed of myself because I lack inspiration, I don't know how to make such a mind-blowing confession like yours."
"I don't care about confessions," He growled as he narrowed the space between their faces. "All that matters to me is you."
"I love you too." She said finally before smacking her lips on the man's, wrapping her arms around his neck to bring him closer to her, their hungry tongues finally met after an unbearable separation.
"It was a mistake, we must not succumb to desire." This sentence was like an alarm ringing in the minds of the couple, each of them knew that their separation had become difficult and that things were going to get complicated, because Nami hadn't changed her plans to leave the next day and Law wasn't going to ask her to stay because he knew she had better go, for her safety.
When the kiss was over and they started to breathe again, each of them looked at the other longingly, wanting to rip off their garments and succumb to lust, but they both knew it was a bad idea. Nami was going to leave the next day, if she tastes Law now, she won't want to get away from him. As for Law, Nami's departure wasn't the thing holding him back, what bothered him was the fact that he was going to become even more obsessed with her.
"I want to sleep with you", Nami said with a sad look. "But I know it's going to complicate things if we do."
"I agree." He nodded before taking a deep breath, wanting to forget the thing that woke up between his legs.
"Why don't you leave the underworld?" She asked as her eyes filled with hope when an idea occurred to her. "Law, come with me," She offered, grabbing the man's hands confused by her words. "Come live with me without crime or mafia, a normal life."
"A normal life." Law echoed as he began to think of a tricky way to shatter the woman's hope, he had to diplomatically decline her offer so as not to hurt her.
"Yes," She nodded as a smile lit up her face. "We can get married and even have children without being afraid of anything at all."
"Nami," Law whispered, grabbing the redhead's face in his hands. "Having a family with you would be the most amazing thing that could ever happen to me," He pressed his forehead against the woman's. "But unfortunately, I can't leave my current life until I achieve my goal."
"But there is no future in the world of crime," She tried to argue despite knowing it was pointless to do so. "Law, you'll end up getting killed if you keep doing what you're doing," She swallowed a painful lump as hope left her. "You narrowly escaped death just a few days ago."
"I know," Law groaned as he stroked the long orange hair. "But this is the road I have decided to take and unfortunately I cannot give up."
"You can give up," She strongly contradicted him. "You just lack willpower."
"You're right," He sighed, enjoying the hot breath of the woman caressing his skin. "I'm sorry, but I don't want to give up when I'm so close to the goal."
"I do not want to lose you." She gasped before stealing a soft kiss from the man.
"I will not die," He declared before stealing a kiss in turn. "I will fight against the grim reaper if I have to, I will achieve my goal and come and start a family with you," He smiled when the woman smiled. "We can even have a dog too to play with the children."
"Okay," Nami whispered before she started to kiss Law languidly, licking and biting his lip before parting from him. "I'm going to rest in my room, tomorrow will be a long day." She declared as she pulled away from him.
"So see you tomorrow." He said, trying to hide his disappointment with a fake smile.
"Good night." She winked at him as she walked out the door, looking at him over her shoulder.
"Good night." He answered her, avoiding looking at her sexy body so as not to make the pain between his legs worse.
And despite having left the room for a long time, Law's eyes continued to stare at the door she had just come out of, he felt that Nami's visit was like an illusion because he couldn't believe what had just happened. He had for the first time in his life made a confession of love and frankly, it hadn't been humiliating like he thought. Telling the woman what was weighing on his heart had been very relieving for him, at least now he had no regrets.
