A/N: Sorry guys for the VERY long wait. I have been stuck with a technical problem for the next chapters and I finally dropped this story down for a long time. Please forgive me.
My daughter urged me to finish it and I promised I would, so here it is !
Saturday February 1st 3:25PM
Adam POV
We have been working nonstop for 3 hours now. My eyes are wasted and I have the worst headache.
Dad called Amar to organize a police control in Fort Sheridan, but he said that Nat is not considered missing yet, so he won't be able to do anything before tomorrow.
Mom and I are reading all the files one after another, trying to gather a clue that would help us understand who's behind this. I'm sure she would have answered me by now if she could. I put our emergency code in the message. We decided to have one since I got locked in the Bureau in October. When one of us sends a message with the word hurricane in it (stands for URIYCan like You Respond If You Can) the other must answer or get in touch by any means within 2 hours. If not that means trouble.
Suddenly, my phone vibrates, warning me I've got a text message. I look at it eagerly when I realize I forgot to call Alice, but I'm frozen by what I read. It comes from Natalie's phone but it's not from her:
I have your sister and her friend. Come to me and I will perform the bone marrow transplant on your sister. If you don't, she will die. It's not a problem to me but I suppose it is to you.
Be at the pier on Tuesday 11th at 4PM alone. Line in the queue for the Children's Museum. If you're not alone, she's dead and her boyfriend too.
If I don't see you, I'll take what I need from your sister and let her die.
If anyone comes after me, I will also torture her.
We will be away for a while so you can't track us while I get ready for you. I'll be back in a few weeks, just in time for our meeting….
Respond within 8 hours. If you call the police I kill them both of course.
Lincoln
Mom knows immediately from my face, that something is wrong. I hear angst in her voice when she asks "Adam, is it from Natalie? What is it? Adam, tell me now." I read it again and swallow slowly. I am speechless, I feel terrified. I don't read it aloud and show the screen to Mom. She stays silent and hands it to Dad.
He reacts immediately. "I call Amar right now. With that, the police will have to act. Maybe they can trace the phone." Mom jumps on her feet, and grabs his wrist to stop his move to the phone. "I think we have to be careful. I trust Amar of course, but that person must have strong connections in the city, and probably at higher levels in the government. You cannot do what I read about in those files, without strong help and complicity at high levels to stay hidden. We have to think carefully before doing anything."
Dad says "You know that the police will have the means to locate them."
"And if there's a spy he'll know we're tracking him instead of doing what he says. How do you know he won't kill her?"
I enter the conversation "He needs her alive for a while. I know. But that won't last..."
"That's why we have to find her now, and we need the police." Insists Dad.
Once again I know that Mom won't bend when she says "And I want to have a look on my own. Adam found so much already, maybe we can dig deeper and find them faster than the police. No need to say all of it would not be totally legal."
"But we have no time Tris!"
"And we don't know who is working with him! Remember they managed get in and out of the hospital so easily, carrying two people at night. And no camera caught them."
I shake my head: as usual it will end up with them both arguing stubbornly.
I burst out "I thought you were supposed to stop this! You're worse than kids! Anyway, no need to fight upon what's going to be done I will go." Both of them are about to cut me but I'm faster.
"No. There's no other way. But I won't go unprepared. I have a backup plan, if you just would listen and help me prepare it."
It's quiet all of a sudden. I go on "First, we have to tell everything we know to Amar but no one else, so he can do his best to know where they are kept. After that we can start working on my plan. In fact, I decided I should surrender to be taken to that place wherever it is. The point is that I must take several trackers with me and a memory stick with a few programs of my own. I need one of you to teach me how to disarm a guard with a gun, because I won't be able to pass any weapons. I know it sounds tricky but I'm sure it could work if we manage to hide the trackers properly."
Now they're silent. They look at each other then at me like I'm mad. "No. I won't let you says Mom. Not again." She looks suddenly older than 30... I can see she's about to cry.
Dad is still silent. I wonder if he's desperate, just tired or proud of me. He's looking at me as if I said something stupid that he doesn't understand. I open my mouth to talk when he says :
"You're not going there alone Adam, you're just too young."
"He wants me, Dad, and he said he'd kill them both if we don't obey him. If we are to disobey, Simon's parents should know about all this. It's their son's life too, they should have a voice in this."
Dad suddenly seems to become a leader again and says quietly : "Adam's right Tris, we cannot decide of this alone. First we should respond positively for the meeting and then, use the time he left us to get ready for it. I will call Simon's parents right now to be sure they agree...Adam That doesn't mean I'm okay for you to go. Am I clear ?"
I nod silently, Mom too, and Dad leaves the room to give the call.
Half an hour later he's back.
He spoke to Simon's parents and Amar. They decided to agree to Lincoln's conditions and find a way to free Nat and Simon in the next 10 days. I'm sure my plan is the best but I don't argue right now.
Two hours later, I give a call to Caleb. I'll need him for what I have in mind...
