PAUL
I wiped the sweat off my brow. It was an unusually hot day in La Push and I was trying to finish a project I was working on before heading out to the beach for the rest of the afternoon. I was coated in grease and had long already stripped off my shirt, which I rarely bothered with anyway.
Me and Jacob had taken over an old shed near Sams property and turned it into a mechanic shop, though Jacob was never around that much anymore due to his imprint, Renesme.
Internally rolling my eyes, I grimaced as I thought of the once inseparable friendship with the guys be broken apart by their stupid imprints. What once had been a powerful pack of wild wolves had turned into a bunch of pussy whipped dudes salivating over their girlfriends they were forced to love by the spirits.
I hoped I'd never imprint. That was probably my worst fear. I didn't need another situation like Leah and Sam and I never wanted to have some girl control my life. Generally I thought girls were annoying and not worth even talking to, except Emily, because she was nice and gave me free food. But other than that, they were a waste of time except to sleep with.
Currently I was working on my own truck, which needed a new conveyer belt. I was just getting ready to put in a new part when there was a loud commotion coming from Sams house. My wolf ears could hear from far away but couldn't quite make out words. I started jogging towards the shouts with a smirk on my face, ready to see the drama unfold.
It all started three weeks ago when Leah disappeared in the middle of the night, taking Sams truck with no note or anything. I thought this was hilarious considering their history and wondered if this was just some late onset revenge for what he did to her with Emily.
Sam was furious. Calling her nonstop while Emily tried to calm him down, telling him there must have been some reason she left. Seth was really worried. His sister hadn't said anything about her departure. Everyone was confused why Leah took Sam's truck and not her car. The whole situation had the pack on edge and everyone was panicking.
I didn't really see what the big deal was. Leah was free to make her own decisions and everyone was always in everyone's business. If she wanted to get away from it all I definitely understood. It could get overwhelming when you couldn't have a single thought to yourself. And besides, last week she sent a text to both Sam and Seth saying she was fine, and that she would be back soon.
I slowed to a walk and grinned at the scene in front of me. All the pack was already here, probably getting Emily to make them dinner.
Fucking roaches.
Sam and Leah were yelling at each other, but that was normal. The strange thing was that behind them there was a fucking RV attached to Sams truck. I raised my eyebrows and was about to make a joke to Leah about how she was finally getting away from us when Embry grabbed my arm.
"Dude hold on. I have to warn you about some-"
He didn't get to finish his sentence before I saw her.
She clambered out of the RV door holding on to some sort of potted plant and backpack. I didn't even see her face yet and I knew it was her. No one in La Push would wear those stupid boots she was so proud of. I remember her saying she got them for ten bucks at a flea market in New Orleans while on some crazy life altering road trip. Her old tshirt and cut off shorts showed off her legs. I rolled my eyes. And of course she had fucking pink hair now.
To say I knew Odessa was an understatement. God even her name was ridiculous. The summer after my mom died, when Leah and Sam were still together and sickeningly still in love, they dragged me along to Texas where Leahs cousin lived. They weren't even actually related. It was Sue Clearwaters sister's stepdaughter from her ex husband or something like that. Leah and her were super close, even after Leah's aunt and Odessas dad divorced, they never let time or distance keep them apart.
Odessa was the type of girl you couldn't ever pinpoint a certain personality. She would get roaring drunk and start yelling Charles Bukowski quotes and yet did not give a shit about philosophy or romance. She would be covered in dirt at the end of most days but then would randomly get upset about misplacing her favorite lipgloss. She was always cooking or writing down recipes but only ever ate a fourth of her plate. She'd punch a grown man in the throat if you'd hurt one of her friends but would tear up when she saw an old person sitting alone. She smoked a pack of cigarettes a day but would go on and on about the importance of organic vegetables. She didn't sleep. She was the most pretentious, wild, energetic girl I'd ever met and the thing that I'd never admit that infuriated me the most was she was not attracted to me at. all.
The first time I was introduced to her I already had a smirk on my face, knowing she would become flustered and blush as soon as she looked at me. But that summer when I sauntered up to her and gave her my most charming "Hi beautiful I'm Paul.", she simply looked at me for two seconds, said "okay" and then walked off, chatting to Leah about her plans for the day like I didn't even exist. Never in my life had a girl not been affected my charms and it pissed me off. Sam thought it was hilarious. I was out for revenge. That was how it all started between me and her.
Sam knew I was in rough shape and convinced me to go with them, insisting he needed a guy with him since Leah and Odessa would make him the third wheel since they hadn't seen each other in two years. With nothing else to do and definitely grateful for a distraction, I went. It was also the summer before Sam shifted. Before everything changed.
That summer was the best three months of my entire life.
So now I stared at her stupid pink hair and listened to her obnoxiously loud laugh as she let Seth take her plant from her arms so she could grab something else from the atrociously old trailer. The last time I had seen her we didn't part on good terms.
Jesus. Now Leah and her annoying cousin were here to make Sam and the rest of the packs lives miserable.
I didn't realize Embry was still next to me, looking nervously between me and Odessa. I hadn't seen her since I shifted and he was probably worried my temper would get the best of me. The thing with me and her is that we did not get along. At all.
Glaring, I shook him off and stepped forward, determined to say something to get a rise out of her, when she looked up.
I stopped in my tracks. The world stopped. I couldn't breathe. Her eyes. Her everything.
The voices around me shushed and I knew everyone was staring.
They knew.
I started shaking as she simply looked my shirtless figure up and down.
"You should really think about working out Paul. You look like you've gotten a little soft." She said sarcastically before rolling her eyes and stalking off into Sams house.
And that was it. I just found the love of my life and she hated me.
I didn't even register the insult or the guys guffawing around me trying to stifle their laughs. Her voice was like an anchor. I could never leave now that I had her voice even though waves of emotion were crashing inside me.
Shaking, I tried to control my breathing. The guys were talking to me trying to calm me down but I knew I had to leave. Now.
I fucking imprinted on a pink haired nightmare.
ODESSA
"Fucking Paul."
Sighing, I unscrewed my flask that I had hidden in my bra and poured vodka into the rest of my Diet Coke bottle and took a swig. It tasted like shit.
I started pacing Sams kitchen. I knew it was a mistake to let Leah take me here. Trembling I took another sip and winced as it went down my throat.
When I had called Leah in tears three weeks ago I never expected her to drop everything and come get me. I never had kept any secrets from her, even when her aunt had divorced my dad, we always kept in touch and visited whenever we could. Thats how I knew all the guys, from visiting several times when I was younger. But one thing she never knew was how bad my dad had gotten. She knew that I had never known my mom, but didn't know how my dad resorted to failed marriages and drinking, getting worse over time.
The last time she saw me in person was the summer she came down with Sam and Paul. At that point my dad was in such a drunken stupor he wouldn't even notice I was gone. I was so ashamed. Thats the reason I took his old van and asked them to travel with me the whole time. I didn't want her to know home was just a trailer park then.
When I saw Leah last, that was also the last time I saw my dad. I never went back. I started out by living in my van and waitressing in Austin, then saved up enough for my own RV. The past three years I've traveled coast to coast, serving tables by day and bartending by night till I saved up enough money for the next town.
Never back to the trailer park once.
At least until I got a call saying my dad had passed away. I went back to the shell of a place he was living in. Broken bottles and only a couch remained. I cried for the first time there on the dirty cracked floor and called Leah. I told her I was so tired of running and didn't know where to go. My own truck was broken down and I had sold it for parts to help pay for my dads cremation. My only goodbye I could give him.
Leah was there in a huge truck and a determined look in her eye two days later.
"Can I get you anything to eat?"
I whipped my head up and stared. Not at her scars but into her eyes, finally meeting the woman who destroyed Leah's relationship. I took another swig.
She shifted on her feet, obviously uncomfortable. I actually felt bad for her, I knew me and Leah were a little intimidating, especially since I guess in some long drawn out way Emily was also kind of my cousin. I sighed. "Do you want to go smoke a cigarette?"
She blinked rapidly and looked relieved. I think she was expecting more of an altercation from me but I really didn't have the energy to scold her. Besides, Sam is really the one I hate.
She opened her mouth then closed it again. "Um. No thank you. I'm pregnant."
I looked her up and down and shrugged, not even surprised. No wonder Leah was so nervous to come back home, especially with me in tow.
I tried to casually peek out the window to look at Paul. I knew he would be pissed to see me but I didn't expect that much anger when he saw my face.
I saw Brady and Colin peeking into my windows trying to get a look inside before Leah barked at them to get away.
Emily cleared her throat. "He's gone."
Nodding my head I muttered a quick "congratulations" to her before going back outside. Leah and Sam seemed to have calmed down and were now looking at me intently. It was weird to see them standing next to each other again.
Leah was first to speak. "Well at least you got the worst part over with. I talked to Sam and he's going to talk to Billy about his plot of land he was thinking about selling."
Sam looked like he wanted to say something to me but stopped. He knew I was still protective of Leah after what he did to her.
I raised my eyebrows at him. "So you knocked up Emily."
He practically snarled at me.
Fucking weird idiot.
Leah stalked towards me and grabbed my arm, pulling me away from Sam with a roll of her eyes. She leaned down and whispered in my ear. "We have a lot to talk about."
I let her lead me back to my trailer but gave Sam one last glare and the middle finger for good measure.
He looked stressed.
