Baby steps
At the rave:
There she stood unable to move. Frozen in her tracks looking at the man who caused her so much pain and her supposed best friend just casually standing next to him. Kai seemed confused, he was talking like his tongue was choking him. Bonnie didn't even listen to his words, the look of fright on her face was evident as she started getting flashbacks of their alone time in the prison world. Bonnie didn't understand what he wanted to say, but she threatened him either way. She learned early on that you have to act tough so people would be too scared to hurt you. She pushed him out of her way and stormed off. He didn't even know what he expected to happen, he was the villain in everyone's story. He deserved everything he got. Well maybe not the torment in his early childhood, but everything after that was his fault. He was never the man to give up. As he always liked to say "You win some, you loose some, except for me. I always win." She has every right to be mad, but that doesn't mean he'll stop asking for her forgiveness, it just means that it will be hard. He considered going after her, but decided against it. He went back to his hotel room thinking of all the ways he could prove himself.
Bonnie came to her house outraged. She could barely control her magic, lights were flickering, furniture was being tossed around by an invisible force and there she was in the middle of a circle made from chaos. Who the hell did he think he was asking for her forgiveness after everything he had done?! Manipulating them, shooting her with an arrow, stabbing her, even drugging her, those were some of the thoughts she had.. She had her own fair share of wrongdoings but at least she never left him alone. That was by far the worst he did. She went in for a long cold shower hoping that after that everything would be erased from her memory.
When Kai came to his room, the first thing he did was go to bed. Not to sleep, but just to think about everything. The world was different now that he had empathy. He cared so much about what some people thought of him. Kai wanted forgiveness only from his sister and Bonnie. He wanted to be on good terms with both of them, well he wanted a bit more than good terms with Bonnie. She is the best thing that has ever happened to him. No matter how hard it is, in that moment he knows that he is going to do better, be a better man for her. Sooner or later she will have to notice the change although sooner is much preferable, he can wait. He could wait forever on her.
After a couple of hours, Bonnie awakened in cold sweat, trembling in fear. Unable to breathe, all she could do is wait for this panic attack to be over. She had them ever since she got back from the prison world. Dreaming of all the awful things that had happened to her wasn't easy, but living through them is much harder. It was 4 am, and she decided to go for a walk. She liked to go to the park. That place always calmed her down, she would sit on a bench remembering her childhood. It was a much simpler time, her father would push her on a swing, and her grandmother would be on the side talking with people. She was happy then, but it was many years ago. Now her grams is gone and her father is absent. How did everything get this bad she wondered. Deep down knowing that it was all because of the stupid vampires. Hell, her grams is gone because of her now best friend. The same guy who threatened her many times, same guy who killed her mom. She really needed a late night walk.
Kai arose from his bed. He was also troubled with nightmares. He would get flashbacks of all the horrible things he did in the prison world. Every time he woke up like that, he would hate himself a bit more. He knew that even if Bonnie forgave him, he would never forgive himself. He didn't appreciate being left alone with his thoughts. He was in need for some fresh air and maybe alcohol.
It was a peaceful night, which is weird for Mystic falls. There weren't many people around, that's why it was so easy to spot her. Kai stopped not believing his eyes, Bonnie was in the park all alone. This was his shot, but what is he supposed to say? She didn't really appreciate his earlier attempt. "Now I don't want to get my face melted off, but this opportunity is too perfect to just waste like that" the boy said to no one in particular. "Is this seat taken?" he asked, pointing his finger next to her. Shivers went down her spine, and she wasn't sure if it is because of the cold air or the person standing in front of her. He wore his usual smirk, but looked very different at the same time. His eyes were sincere and full of hope. Before Bonnie got the chance to answer his question with yet another rude remark, he just sat there. "Hey, I didn't say you could sit here" she said while slightly pushing him. "You didn't say I couldn't either" the boy smirked. She didn't say anything else after that because in that moment she understood… It is pointless to argue with a mad man. They sat in pleasant silence. She hated the fact that she enjoyed being around him. Yes he was the second most annoying man she met, but the feel of his aura and the magic around him excited her. It was a witch thing. She never felt like that with any other witch, but of course she would never say that outloud. "Your teeth are chattering and you're shaking." Kai said after some time. "Huh?" she was so deep in thought, she didn't even realise that he was talking again. "Are you cold?" he asked with more worry in his voice than she expected. "No, and even if I was then so be it." he sighed, she could be so stubborn sometimes. "Here take my jacket, you'll get sick" Kai stood up, and put his jacket on her. "Why are you doing this, you're in a T-shirt, why would you take off your jacket and be cold just for me?" Bonnie was skeptical of his every move, but accepted the jacked, she really was cold . "Well I've risked my life for you, why wouldn't I risk getting a cold?" he asked trying to joke around, but all he got was even more confused Bonnie. "What do you mean risked your life?" her eyes were now wide open. At first Kai was confused "Well of course your little Scooby Doo gang didn't tell you." He proceeded to tell her everything that happened. At the end of the story Bonnie was even more confused, because now she had to admit that Kai was not the monster that she had painted him to be. Her feelings were all around the place, but still she remained calm. That was one of her strengths, always stay focused on the task. She needed some time to think, but maybe Kai was redeemable after all. Well she was about to find out. They started talking about the modern world, and Kai was actually funny. Spending time with him is nice when you don't have to fight for your life.
He couldn't believe it, a couple of times he had to pinch himself to check if he was dreaming. Bonnie was sitting next to him, wrapped in his jacket that was oversized on her, and she was laughing. He didn't want the night to be over, but soon enough he felt Bonnie's head hit his shoulder. She was really tired, she couldn't even keep her head straight. This meant so much to Kai. She finally felt safe enough to let her guard down next to him. She was beautiful. This is what he wants from life. Just to see her everyday, to be able to hug her and laugh with her. He would give everything for her.
