After talking with Reiju for days they finally set a date for her to get Luane and take her home. They set it for spring break. She'll have a whole week and not a weekend. Luane was a little upset, she thought she could spend that week with Arin and Zoro. It was going to be fun but now that's not going to happen.
That Sunday night Reiju came to pick her up and take her to her home. It'll be a week without her and the following Saturday morning she'll be back. It's just a week Sanji tells himself.
Yet, he finds himself in front of Zoro's house in the middle of night. Monday night. Sanji rang the doorbell. A grumpy Zoro answered the door. He glared dangers into Sanji soul. "Cook, what are you doing here in the middle of the night?" He asks.
"I couldn't sleep."
"Obviously."
"I'm just not use to not having Luane with me." Sanji says. Zoro sighs, he steps to the side to let Sanji in. The cook goes to the living room and sits on the couch as Zoro closes the door, locks it then goes into the kitchen to get some water for both of them.
"Want to talk about it?" Zoro asks as he gives Zoro a glass of cold water. Sanji takes it. After drinking half he looks at Zoro.
"It's been four years since I last Reiju. I haven't let Luane out of my sight since. I'm use to reading a story with her before bed. I don't know what to do." He says drinking some more water.
"What about the day I met her? She was out of your sight then." Zoro says, that stabs his heart, remembering that.
"She wanted to back to our old place. She didn't like it here but I told her no so she ran away." Sanji says. Zoro does remember her saying something like that. "It wasn't the only time either." Sanji sighs. "I know I wasn't perfect but she's become mine. I raised her. I don't want her to leave."
"You raised her, she's use to you. I don't think it's going to be easy for her to leave you." Sanji looks at Zoro. He's thankful Zoro is trying to help but...
"Don't you think she would rather be with her mom than with her uncle."
"You don't really think she sees you as her uncle? She's was raised by you, she still calls you her dad, even after knowing the truth."
"She's never wondered about her mother but I'm sure she was curious. Maybe she thought I wouldn't tell her, maybe she was worried about what I would tell her."
"I don't know why. If she really wanted to know the truth she would ask no matter what the answer is."
"I don't know, what would I do without her?"
"I don't know what's going to happen but what ever does, you are a bigger part of her life than you know. Plus you are her uncle. If you want to see her you can." Zoro stands up, "are you heading home are you sleeping on the couch?"
"I'll sleep on the couch." Sanji says. Zoro nods. Leaving Sanji alone in the dark.
Sanji woke up to the sound of sizzling. There was natural light so it must be morning. He got up rubbing his eye as he made his way to the kitchen. Arin sat on the table with Lili. "Morning." He says. Arin looks at him shocked?
"Morning." the little boy says. He looks around. "Where's Luane?" that seemed to have struck a nerve for the adult.
"Luane is with her mom." Sanji says sullenly as he sits at the table too.
"How come you're not with them?"
"I'm just Luane's uncle. This is for Luane to get to know my sister."
"Are you going to mope around like that all week?" Zoro asks setting a plate in front of Arin, then Sanji then his spot wile setting Lili breakfast for her too.
"Maybe." Sanji says eating. Zoro sighs.
"No matter how much you miss her, it's not going to change that she'll be with Reiju a whole week or Luane's decision at the end." Zoro says.
"Doesn't mean I can't mope."
"Luane is going to be gone a whole week!" Arin shouts, "we made plans to make our own level in Mario Maker. It was going to be perfect." Arin says moping himself. Zoro sighs looking at the two moping ones. He looks over at Lili to see she is the only one focused on breakfast. Zoro lets them mope, if what he's saying doesn't get them to stop why bother. Let the mope, get it out of their system.
Arin walked down the stairs, carefully and quietly as he made his way to the kitchen. He saw the light on and so he went to get some water for himself. "Zoro can I... Sanji?" Arin asks seeing the cook standing there making something.
"Arin? What are you doing up?" Sanji asks.
"I woke up and couldn't sleep, I thought Zoro was down here, I was going to ask for a glass of water." He says sitting at the table.
"I'll get you that." Sanji gets a glass, fills it with water and set it down in front of the boy. Arin drinks it then looks at Sanji.
"Am I going to see Luane again?" Arin asks. With the way Sanji has been acting he's making it seem like Luane is gone from them forever.
"Yeah you will." Sanji says. Arin smiles.
"Good. I don't want her to leave me." Arin says.
"I don't either." Sanji whispers.
Sanji stood nervously in front of the Zoro's car. He got the marimo to give him a ride to the meeting place to get Luane back. He stayed at Zoro's the whole week. Zoro had told him to go to his job but Sanji just couldn't do it.
What happens if they don't show up?
What if Luane wants to stay?
The cooks face turns white. What would he do then? "DAD!" Sanji looks up to see Luane running towards him. Her eye had a thin layer of moist. She gives him a big hug and he hugs her back, hard. "I missed you." She says.
"I did too." Sanji says smiling down at her. He pat her head.
"She's fast." Sanji looks up to Reiju, she seed to have been running. "As soon as she saw you she ran towards you." She explains. She gave Sanji a sad smile. That's her daughters answer isn't it?
"Luane why don't you go inside the car." Sanji says. He turns to open the passenger seat.
"Luane!" Arin shouts seeing her.
"Arin!" She shouts back. She hops in the car. Sanji closes the door and looks at his sister.
"I think she made her decision." Reiju says. "Four years really made a difference."
"What are you planning on doing now?"
"I haven't thought that out yet. I thought I would have Luane back, it didn't go as planned." Reiju said with a sad look on her face. "I have her bags still at my place. She was in such a rush to get back to you that she didn't seem to care. I'll drop them off some other time."
"Are you sure? Keep them at your place? If she visits again she'll have things to change into."
"No, I don't think this will happen again."
"Why not?"
"She doesn't need me in her life. She's got you and your friend, her friends. She wouldn't stop talking about you, Arin, Zoro and the others. Zeff too. She's happy and that's what I wanted but... I thought I would be able to pop in here and there to see her but I guess not." Sanji saw a tear slide down his sister face. "I think it would be best to leave her alone with you. It seems better that way and I'll continue to live my own life." Reiju gives Sanji a smile. He was happy that Luane choose him but he now feels guilty about his sister. Her own daughter didn't want to have anything with her.
"I don't know if I'll ever see you again but I would like that. Call me, text me or anything." Sanji says with a smile.
"I will. Till next time." Reiju waves good bye and leaves. Sanji walks around to the drivers seat, Zoro let him drive so he could think about something else and not worry.
Sanji looks behind him at the three kids in their seats. "Let's get going?" Sanji says starting the car. "How was the week with your mom?" Sanji askss Luane.
"It was okay? She was nice and so was Pudding." Sanji stops for the red light and turns to Zoro who starting to laugh at the ridiculous name.
"Pudding?" Arins asks, "was that her dog?"
"No, it that the name of her wife." Luane says.
"Hey wait." Zoro stops laughing, "wasn't that...?" he looks at Sanji nodding his head.
"I didn't know." Sanji says.
"It's not your fault." Zoro pats his head. "As long as they're happy."
"Yeah, as long as they're happy."
