AN: Surprise, surprise! Hey guys! It took me some time to get back on writing due to work, college, and life, but now I'm back and I plan to finish this story. I started this chapter a few months ago, but after a few phrases I lost interest and then I had a few breakdowns but I'm getting better, and writing helps.

I don't know how often I will post the new chapters, but I can assure you that you'll get a new one each week. Thank you for sticking around and waiting for an update. I'm sending a virtual hug to all of you!

CHAPTER 5

"Honey, do you think you can convince Katie to go to the doctor? When I got out of our bedroom, I saw her rushing to the bathroom again. And I don't think this is a stomach bug."

"What are you saying, Jim?" Johanna asked concerned.

"I don't like to think about that, but maybe our Katie is pregnant?"

"What? She wasn't with anyone since Rick left."

"Exactly. She started feeling sick a few weeks after Rick left."

"Oh. Oh!" was everything Johanna could say at that moment.

"I don't know about you, Jim, but if Katie is pregnant and she wants to keep the baby I will support her. I will support her no matter what."

"I will support her too! She's our little girl."

"Do you think we should talk to her?" asked Johanna after a few seconds.

"I think so. But will you let me do it? I know you're always talking to her about things, and I want her to know that I am there for her too."

"Of course, dear. When do you want to talk to her?"

"Well, you know what they say: There's no better time like the present. I will do it now, even if I'm more nervous than when I asked you out the first time." Jim said chuckling.

"You can do it!"

"That's exactly what Denis told me when I spoke to him about asking you out."

"Your best friend knew what he was talking about. I'm not surprised I love him. Now go! Dinner will be ready soon, and I want both of you in the kitchen in half an hour."

"Yes, ma'am!" and with that, Jim made his way to Kate's room.

"You okay, Katie bug?"

"Jesus, dad! You scared me!"

"I'm sorry, honey. I'm just worried about you."

"I'm fine, dad." Even she didn't believe that, and by the look on Jim's face, neither did he.

"You know better than to lie to me or your mother. I know, I wasn't as present as I should have been, but I'm here and I will always support you, you know that, right?"

"I know, dad, I know. Although, mom is scarier than you. That's the main reason I don't lie to her." That made the father-daughter duo laugh.

After a few minutes, both got serious again.

"Katie, both your mom and I observed that you're not feeling well for a few weeks now. We think that you should see a doctor. It pains me to see you like this and not be able to help. As I said before, you have full support from us."

"I'll make an appointment tomorrow. But why do I feel like you're not telling me everything? You used the word 'support' too many times and it doesn't feel right. Dad, what's going on?" Jim was acting weird and that made Kate suspicious.

"Look Katie, I know I'm not your mom and you'll probably talk to her about this and-" Jim rushed to say.

"Dad, just take a deep breath. Yeah, just like that. Now, what were you trying to say?"

"I'm not good at this. I don't normally do it, so I don't know how to do it. Maybe I should have let your mom take care of this."

"I don't know what you're trying to do or say, but you're great. You've always been, and I know you'll always be. Even when you'll be a grandpa." If Jim would have drunk something he would have choked. It took him a few seconds to recover.

"That's what this is about." He muttered.

"What? What did you just say?"

"Better rip the band-aid in one move, right? Here it goes: sweetheart, I think you may be pregnant."

"P-pregnant? But-"

"Look, as much as I don't want to think about my baby daughter…Wait, let me rephrase this. As much as I don't want to think about my daughter having sex, this may be true. You started throwing up a few weeks after Rick left. It's a least suspicious, don't you think?"

"I-what?" No, this has to be a cruel joke.

'The universe is just fucking with you, Kate. But it can be true, think about it.'

"This can't be true." She turned to Jim with tears in her eyes.

"Dad, it can't be true. I can't be pregnant. Rick is in another part of the world. What am I supposed to do?"

"First of all, we don't know if you're pregnant or not, even if the symptoms suggest that you are. Oh my god, sensibility training Jim. You should think about going on one of those." That brought a smile to Kate's face.

"I think you're doing great for someone who has this talk for the first time." Said Johanna laughing from the door.

"Mom? What am I going to do?"

"Like your father was trying so desperately to say, we have to know for sure if you are pregnant. That's what we're going to do first thing tomorrow. We'll go to the doctor, and we'll find out. After that, we'll see. But I want you to know that we love you the same and we will support you no matter what. Now, what do you say we all go down and have dinner? And what about watching a movie after that? Your choice." Johanna was about to say something else, but Kate already rushed out the door to the bathroom.

"I think just the thought of dinner made her sick."

"I'll go downstairs and make lemonade and some toast. Go, be with to her, be a good mother, not a handsome mess like her father."

"Oh, the modesty."

"I do try, my love. Now go. She needs our-"

"If you say 'support' one more time I might throw up again. Now, I think I heard something about lemonade. That might help."

"Alright. Well, after you, ladies."

AN: I'm not sure I like this chapter, but here goes nothing. I know it's a bit short, but I promise the next chapters will be longer. Let me know what you think about it.

Until next time :D
