Chapter 5 – The Boy of His Dreams

-5:21am-

'Levi!~'

Levi jolted awake, now in a sitting position. He glanced around to make sure no one was in his room. His heart was racing, but his mind was at a stand-still. Everything was quiet...too quiet. He eventually noticed how sweaty his body felt, minus the dampness of the sheets. A grimace crossed his face as he touched a hand to his forehead.

"Damn..."

He looked around the room once more.

"Eren, why do you haunt me like this? Haven't you tormented me enough by now? Aren't you satisfied yet?" He whispered as he grabbed a fistful of hair, tugging on it harshly.

"Go away...please... I don't want you in my head." He began crying, laying his head in his hands. "I'm tired of feeling guilty. Stop plaguing me with your memories. Please..."

...

Miles away, Eren was also stirring in his bed. His brown hair was a disheveled mess, tears were spilling across his cheeks, and the bed was a disaster. The room was filled with choked gasps and crying. In the middle of it all, was a boy who just wanted to be hugged. He couldn't calm down, no matter how hard he tried. He just wanted warmth, human warmth, loving warmth.

"No...stop... Please, go away! I-I don't want to see you anymore! Please...please stop...I'm sorry...Captain."

His eyes widened.

"Captain? W-what am I talking about? Who is...Captain?"

Click. The bedroom door opened.

"Eren. What're you doing up this early?" Mikasa said peeping her head in.

He stared at his sister.

"I...I don't know...I had a dream...but I don't remember what it was..." He said quietly.

She gazed at him, "Eren...have...have you been crying?"

"Huh?"

...

Autumn leaves fell against bare concrete, wafting with the light flutters of the air. Eren was walking to school with Armin and Mikasa, the three chatting while they took a shortcut through the park.

"So," Mikasa started. "what's all this talk about the new history teacher? I'm hearing gossip about him left and right."

Eren shrugged his shoulders, "Eh, he's cool. Kinda weird though."

"He is kinda strange, but he's also pretty awesome. He's so smart, he's friends with the principal, and he even played chess with me during lunch yesterday."

"Stop geeking out." Eren swatted his hand in front of Armin's face.

"Sorry, sorry. He's just such a cool teacher."

The brunet rolled his eyes, "Sure."

...

-At school, 1st period-

"Ok, everyone, sit down. We're having a little pop quiz today."

The students groaned in unison.

"Yeah, yeah. I get it. I didn't like taking quizzes either." The teacher said from his desk. "But this quiz is easy. It's not over class curriculum, it's about yourselves."

Armin raised his hand, prompting the teacher to call on him.

"Why'd you call it a quiz then?"

"Because it makes you think."

"Ok." Armin went back to getting a pencil from his backpack, then handed it to Eren.

After the quizzes had been passed out, Levi walked back to his desk and slumped into his chair. He focused his view on his computer, glancing at Eren every few minutes. He couldn't help it; the boy was just too pretty for words. The way his messy, chestnut hair gently fell over his turquoise eyes as he squinted at his paper had Levi holding back a smile.

'Look, Captain! The flowers are so pretty! Oh! And look, the squirrels are playing!'

Levi's eyes widened a little at the memory, then he smiled, eventually giving in to the ecstatic boy who plagued his memories.

...

"Hey, Eren! What'd you make on that pop quiz?" A tall, brown-haired teen slung his arm around Eren as he walked down the hallway.

"Uh... I made a 100...why?"

"What?! How'd you make a 100?"

"I don't know...all you had to do was answer the questions."

"Yeah, but how?! Those questions were some cryptic shit from like a millennium ago. Even Armin had trouble, and he's a genius."

Eren shrugged away from the boy, "Look, Bertholdt, I don't know what to tell you except you need to study more. That's the only way you'll get better." He walked away to his 2nd period, hoping he wouldn't be followed.

The halls were bursting with commotion at lunch time. Students were leaving and entering, coming and going. Most left to have lunch at their houses if they lived close by, but others stayed and ate in the café. Eren was normally one of those people, but today he had a bone to pick with someone.

He lightly knocked on the door, careful not to hurt his knuckles against the wood. He heard a voice behind the frame and cautiously cracked the door open.

"What do you want?"

"Sir, uh, Mr. Ackerman…?" He corrected, shuffling his feet closer to the desk. He could feel the man's heavy, dim aura enveloping his body. The pressure alone was enough to make him shake, but he kept his body steady.

"Yes? I don't have all day."

Hesitation overwhelmed him. "…Um…Mr. Ackerman, sorry to bother you, but…have we met before…?"

Levi's eyes widened ever so slightly, but not enough for a normal person to tell his expression had changed.

"I just…I feel like we've me—"

The teacher's eyes narrowed. "No."

"Huh?"

"I said 'no' because we haven't met before."

Eren frowned while looking down in a sulk. "Oh. Sorry to bother you. I'll see myself out." He quietly walked away from the classroom and retreated to the café.
