Chapter 14

Gray POV

When Gray came to, he wasn't exactly sure where he was. One minute, he was in the guildhall, and the next, he was in the center of a weird town he had never been to, the sky was green, and Erza was next to him. And Gajeel was standing a couple yards away from them.

"The lacrima!" one of the guards yelled.

"Forget the kid, we have to catch the other three!" another said. What kid?

"Good, your awake," Gajeel motioned to run, but Gray was still confused.

"What's going on?" He asked, while taking in the scene. Dozens of guards seemed to be standing in shocked awe. They only were brought back to reality when a few of the guards were knocked away, revealing a certain "kid" with white and gold armor.

"Makoto?!" Erza said incredulously.

"Yes, I exist," he said in a bored tone. "Are we going or not?"

"We can fight," Gray said, before taking is signature stance. Then he realized no ice particles were flowing from his hands. "What?! My magic doesn't work?"

"Like I said I'll explain later," Gajeel waved them off. "Iron Dragon Roar!" A funnel cloud of gray of steel pummeled a large group of guards, creating an opening for their escape. They all dashed through the gap and took a left, then a right, then another right before coming to a stop in an alley.

"Now that we're safe," Erza checked behind them as she said this. "Mind explaining this?" she gestured around. Gajeel quickly explained how all of Magnolia was transformed into a massive lacrimas by the anima. As he was explaining what had happened to Erza and himself, Makoto cut in.

"That's great and all, but Wendy, Natsu, and Lucy are in trouble," he said with an annoyed voice.

"Huh?" Erza asked. "You just decided to mention that now?!"

"Well, statistically, it would be easier if you digested the information one at a time." He said sarcastically. "I really only need Gray. Erza…I'm going to need you to distract…you'll see her."

"Could we just go rescue flame-brain already?" Gray finally said.

"Yea," Makoto replied. He snatched the vial of pills in Gajeel's hand, and gave Erza and Gray one. "Eat that. It'll restore your magic." Gray inspected the pill. It was a darkish red color. Swallowing the ball, he felt the reassuring ice cold chill return to his fingers.

"There they are!" Gray turned around, to see…Erza!? It certainly looked like her, with the trademark scarlet hair and the same scary eyes, but that was where the differences ended. The scowl on her face was…unsettling, as actual Erza never really scowled.

"That's the thing I was talking about," Makoto sighed. "Gajeel, Go look for the lacrima."

"You can't order me around you little-" Gajeel began.

"Do it," Makoto said in an uncharacteristic seriousness that even Gajeel took a step back.

"I was going to do it anyways," he grumbled, before taking off.

"Get him!" the other Erza ordered, before unceremoniously getting tackled by his Erza.

"We should go while their distracted," Makoto pointed out.

"Right," Gray nodded. He still had a million questions, but right now, they had to save his friends.

The Edolas guards were surprisingly tough. They could take one or two hits that would've taken down any normal wizard back in Earthland. The palace break-in wasn't going as well as expected. They had run into resistance the moment they had made it into the dungeon.

"Ice-Make, Shield!" Gray blocked a horde of guards coming their way. They weren't going to be able to break out unless…he looked to Makoto. He didn't seem to be having as much trouble, slashing with a gold and whiter sword, and occasionally using wind magic to blow the soldiers back. "Hey Makoto!"

"Yeah?" he asked while pushing away a soldier.

"You have any water magic?" Gray asked. Makoto seemed to punch one of the enemies a little harder.

"Cover me for a sec," he jumped back, before summoning a dark blue lacrima.

"Ice-make, hammer!" Gray created a massive hammer before smashing the ground, causing many of the guards to stumble. He looked back to see that the lacrimas had now changed color to a light blue.

"Ready!" He yelled. Grabbing his hand, Gray began channeling lots of magic into his left hand, as water began to spiral in Makoto's right hand. Now, Union Magic was a tricky spell to pull off, as it required full harmony between the two wizards, but they were out of options. Bwoom! A loud sheet of ice hit him in the face. When he wiped it off, he was that everyone within 100 meters were encased in shards of ice.

"How'd that work?" Makoto asked.

"Don't question it," Gray decided. "We gotta go!" Running passed rows and rows of empty cells, which occurred to Gray why they would need this many, one of the bars suddenly bent right in his face. Ducking at the last second, he put his hands together.

"Ice-make," he briefly grabbed the iron bar. "Freeze!" The bar was completely covered in ice, before he kicked it, shattering it.

"Didn't know you could do that," Makoto commented, "And I think I realize who did that. This should be fun."

"What do you-" Gray began.

"So this is what Earthland wizards can do!" the purple haired kid (or adult?) clapped. Gray noticed that he had a conducting wand in his hand. "I wasn't expecting it to be this flashy. Let's see you do that again!" Five more bars quickly bent towards them.

A second later, the bars were turned into Swiss cheese, and falling to the ground. "Whaa..!" The guy gasped. As he wasn't paying attention to Gray, he realized that this was his chance. He dashed forward, before forcing him into the ground. Just as he was about to make the first punch, a stone block suddenly rose, and smacked him in the ribs, sending him into the stone column.

"Agrh!" Gray stumbled to his feet, The pain, most the likely bruised ribs, dug at his side. "Ice-Make, Floor!" The stones were suddenly covered in slick white ice, causing his opponent to stumble. Skating over the ice, he tried grabbing the conductor's wand.

"No, you don't!" a voice from behind him yelled. Suddenly, the ground softened and Gray found that he couldn't move his feet. What?! He turned around to see a man with blonde hair, double chin, and pink armor standing a few feet away from him.

"There," he said in a creepily syrupy tone.

"Why did you do that?" The purple haired guy complained.

"Hughes, you almost never leave the amusement park," the blonde man said. "You had none of your toys."

"I had it under control, Sugarboy!" Hughes complained like a little child.

"Could we get back to the fight?" Gray but in.

"Oh yeah," Hughes poked him in the chest with his wand, causing him to fall into the softened ice. This guy is so annoying! Gray's face scowled, as he watched Sugarboy try and extract Hughes from the ice. Now would have been a good time for Makoto to strike. Speaking of which, where was he? Gray had been fighting alone the whole time.

"Sky Dragon Roar!" a voice from down the hall. A gust of wind flowed through the hall, causing all of the liquidly ice to be blown away.

"You sure that was a good idea?" Makoto asked. He had Wendy's arm over his shoulder, keeping pressure off of her right* leg.

"You abandoned me son of a bitch!" Gray yelled. He was pissed.

"Wait, you left icehead!?" Natsu exclaimed. "HAHAHAHAHAHA!" He began rolling around on the floor, crying.

"Watch it, flame brain!" Gray growled. He tried to get up, but took a sharp breath.

"I got it!" Wendy limped over to Gray, before using a healing spell, sending a warm feeling radiating out for the point of contact.

"Thanks Wendy," he sighed in relief.

"You're welcome…?" she murmured slightly confused.

"Wait a minute…" Gray just realized something. "Do you not remember me?"

"No…" She said embarrassedly.

"That's Gray," Makoto said while stifling a laugh.

"But he's…" Wendy started. "Oh…I'm sorry!"

"I know," Gray tried to play it off cool. "It's just dark in here."

"Nah, she was just distracted," Makoto came over. "Now will you let me heal you?"

"Um, okay," Wendy said. She stuck her leg out.

He put his hand on her ankle. "Hold still," A light blue glow enveloped his hand, and soon the bruises on her ankle some faded.

"Thanks!" she tried moving it. "You're getting better."

"Meh," he said. Was it just Gray, or could he see a blush underneath Makoto's helmet? "Anyways, we should get going."

As if responding to his words, Sugarboy and Hughes groggily stood. "You won't be getting away!" Hughes tried to say, but it sounded like "Yw wen't be getin awy!"

"You'll pay for hurting my friends!" Natsu declared. "Fire Dragon Roar!" A whirlwind of flame blew through the hallway, scorching even the stone of the walls. A blast of heat rolled over their little group. This feels, off. Gray felt. It shouldn't have been this easy to take out Edolas's top warriors. When the flames dissipated, the blackened generals were lying on the ground, unconscious.

"That was too easy!" Natsu complained.

"Well, they were surprised by Wendy earlier," Makoto added.

"Still," Natsu looked back at them. "Lets go save Lucy!" He was five steps away when he realized that everyone was looking at him. "Huh?"

"You forgot to tie those two up flame brain!" Gray yelled. "Sometimes I think your brain is actually cooked!"

"You take that back stripper!"

"There done," Makoto yelled. "Now will you two stop wasting time!?"

"Fine," Gray had to admit, they were fighting for nothing. "Does anyone know where Lucy is being held?"

"I saw her being carried away by Knightwalker," Makoto mentioned.

"How would you know that?" Gray asked confused.

"Oh um…I overheard them!" he said quickly. Trying to deflect the situation (at least in Gray's mind) he began running in the direction of where Gray came from. Gray sighed, before taking off after him. There was something fishy was about Makoto; he seemed to know more than he let on. That thought soon faded from his mind however. Lucy was in danger.

Normal POV

"Erza could've at least killed me before she suddenly disappeared," Lucy grumbled. She was currently hanging off the balcony of the geometrically impossible castle, with her hands tied up. The rope keeping her from plummeting to her death was over an inch thick. While she would've asked Tarus or to free her, her keys were currently still locked up and nowhere to be found. Sighing, she tried again to worm her way up from the ropes, but her hands kept slipping.

I hate being the damsel in distress. Lucy sighed. Her own writing had let her learn of a lot of different tropes, and one of her less favorite ones was said trope.

"I think I found Lucy!" a voice called.

Wait...was that Wendy? "Wendy!?"

"I'm here!" she called back. "Give me a minute!"

"Lucy!?" Natsu boomed. His pink hair poked out from the edge of the balcony.

"Natsu!" she smiled, with tears forming in her eyes. Her friends had come for her. He quickly began to pull her up.

Natsu was happy to see Lucy again, one of his newer friends. He had been scared, not for his own safety, but hers. He knew how scary and powerful Erza could be, so he wasn't sure what an evil version of her would do to her. He was glad that she wasn't too hurt, though it probably had more to do with Makoto's disruption of her execution.

Lucy finally managed to climb over the railing with the help of Natsu. She rushed over, burying her head into his chest.

"Natsu...!" she managed to stop crying and looked at Wendy. "How did you two escape?!"

"I helped,' Gray stepped into view. He didn't really want to disturb the reunion, but he felt that they were wasting time. He was just about to say something when two blurs rose over them.

"Natsu!" Happy shouted.

"Wendy!" the white cat said.

"Happy," Natsu said. "What are you doing he-" Before he finished, a massive gust of wind blew down. Suddenly, hundreds of dark shapes lowered from the sky, as if an angelic army had descended.

"Attack!"
