This story takes place during the first arc of wings of fire.

The valley seemed to be a very peaceful place as a pair of children splashed their way through a quick flowing river. The sun shone down mercifully on the two children's backs as they played. The children looked quite a bit alike, most likely twins with their matching brown hair and fair skin. Their eyes were a matching green. Their clothes were quite different at least in color with the boy wearing a loud blue and the girl wearing a more subdued green.

"I bet I can throw this rock farther then you can" the girl suddenly piped up hefting a smooth river stone. The boy looked up.

"I'm a way better rock thrower then you are, you could never in a million bajillion years beat me at rock throwing, Bino" the boy said with pride. He picked up a rock of similar size and gave an oomph of exertion he sent the rock flying as far as a seven-year-old could.

"That was a very girly throw, Branc. Watch and I'll show you how to do it" Bino said lifting the rock in one hand and tossing it, to where it came to a stop right beside of Branc's throw.

"Well, you are a girl, and see I did it farther" Branc said lying.

"No you did not, I did" Bino retorted refusing to be outdone. Suddenly a massive shadow blotted out the sun.

"GET DOWN"! A feminine yell came before a woman, their mother by the looks of it came and forced both children under the water of the river. The ground seemed to shake as a massive, ruby red dragon landed beside of the river.

As the humans hid below the river the dragon looked around nervously. Her name was Hawk and she was on a mission, the large red egg that she held in a single talon was the reason for that. Hawk had never been very respected in the sky kingdom. The other skywings saw her as a weaklings, it'd been a wonder she'd even managed to have this egg.

Unfortunately for this egg it was set to hatch on the brightest night and Queen Scarlet of the skywings had decided to destroy every egg set to hatch during that time, which coincidentally was tonight. Hawk had snuck into the hatchery and stolen away her egg. She only had so much time to hide it until the guards were on her. They were probably pursuing her now. Hawk examined a tree and placed her egg under its roots. She tore up a bit of earth to cover it up and turned just in time.

A pair of armored Skywings descended to the earth spears clutched in their talons. "Whatever do you think you're doing Hawk"? A voice came down as a peach colored skywing wearing golden armor landed between them. A shining ruby knife glinted on the skywing's tail.

"Good morning Maelstrom, I was just going for a fly" Hawk lied dipping her head to the noble. Maelstrom was the oldest brother of Queen Scarlet, he commanded the guard which defended the sky kingdom from the forces of Blaze, and Blister.

"Ah, ah, ah. Don't lie to me Hawk. Stratus here says he saw you swipe an egg from the hatchery. An egg my sister had very clearly made known she needed to get rid of. Where is it, Hawk? If you tell me I will forget this ever happened and I may even think about not telling the Queen of this tiny... Mishap" Maelstrom said moving forward, malice thick in his tone.

Hawk took a step backwards the other dragons who Hawk now recognized as Buzzard and Stratus took steps forwards making it clear they'd chase her if she attempted to run. "I dropped it" Hawk lied. "A strong wind messed up my flying and it slipped from my talons and was smashed".

Maelstrom pushed his face near hers, his eyes like piercing daggers. "Do you believe, I can't sniff out a liar when I hear one, Hawk. If you will not tell me where you have hidden this egg perhaps you will tell the Queen. Come with us" Maelstrom flicked his bladed tail and the two guards came forward, spears ready.

Hawk had no choice but to fly off with them. Once the three dragons had gone three comparatively tiny heads poked out of the water. "That was scary" Bino said.

Their mother came to her feet and helped her children out of the water. "Were those dragons? Like papa used to talk about" Branc asked his mother. The children's mother shared their features.

"Yes, they left something" the mother answered taking a few steps forward and grabbing the egg. She immediately dropped it. The egg was large and it carried a red glow. She wanted nothing to do with an egg. She'd lost a sister to dragons and had learned a lesson from it. Never steal from dragons, those monsters ruled Pyrrhia not humans.

"What is it"? Bino came to her mother's side and looked at the egg. "Oh, it's a big rock" Bino assumed.

"It's an egg" the mother answered. She looked around, she wondered if those dragons would come back for it. She looked down at the egg, before bending down and picking it up. It was almost as big as she was. "Hurry, let's go back to the cave" she said. Making sure to go through the river to wash away any scent. She didn't know why she took the egg, but something close to intuition simply wouldn't allow her to leave it.

The three of them rushed through the valley until they made their way into the cave where their little family made their home. The largest group of humans alive in the Sky Kingdom hid in a large cave system, a river ran through the cave and the people had long since been farming edible mushrooms. Bioluminescent fungus atop the cave gave the cavern a ghostly blue light. An old man wearing a green tunic was the first to notice their arrival.

"HEY! Amira is back" he called out, he suddenly noticed what was in her hands. "What's that you've got Amira, an egg"?

"A DRAGON EGG! Are you insane woman"? A man with raven black hair was on the scene quickly his eyes examined the egg hatefully. "You'll bring fiery wrath upon us all. Get rid of it" he demanded.

"They left it, and I took it. I don't know what to do with it" Amira explained as her children ran off to play elsewhere no longer interested in the egg their mother had found.

"Smash it, give it back, just don't leave it here. They'll come after it" the man persisted.

"Wits, there is no need to be so persistent. You're not the only one here whose lost family to dragons, I'm sure Amira has some reason why she took it" the old man said.

"Kiro, shut up. This is a foolhardy decision, and even you should know it. I only hope it isn't already too late to get rid of it" Wits said.

The egg suddenly began to shake, night had fallen and the three moons of Pyrrhia shown through the rare cracks in the ceiling. A horn cracked the egg shell, quickly followed by a little serpentine head. Peach colored scales shown in the light of the cavern as amber eyes took their first look at the world. The baby dragon turned and looked up at Amira. It made a purring noise and rubbed the side of its head against the woman.

The little dragon was already big, half the size of a man as if cooed. "Now it's too late to give it back, I will go get an axe" Wits said.

"No" Amira said scratching the baby dragon between the horns. "It looks harmless" she pointed out.

"Babies grow Amira" Kiro said beginning to agree with Wits.

"What if we train to help us. A dragon could be useful" Amira countered.

"Now you're being ridiculous, why wouldn't it eat us"? Wits said not stopping. "What if it ignores any training? Once it gets big enough for it to matter, we won't be able to stop it".

"Give it a chance" Amira said. The rumble in the little dragon's neck felt nice and she was already getting attached to it.

"At least a year, it'll be big enough to be dangerous by then but not too big to deal with" Kiro proposed.

Wits now realized he was outvoted. "The others will not agree to this, and even if they do you'll only be proving I was right" Wits argued.

"We'll see" Amira said stroking the dragonet's neck.

Here's a bit of a concept for a story, I say concept because this is a bit in competition with another concept I have in mind. The other story is called 'Domino and Stick'. I simply don't have time to write both so if you're willing give them both a look see and support the story you'd like to see pursued, I'd appreciate it.
