author's note: Heyy, this is a new fanfic for a movie that came out in 2006... haha. I've had the idea to write a story like this ever since I watched the movie in 2012, but I've never really got around to doing it. I'll try my best to write (and complete) a story satisfactorily, and if you want to join me on this journey it would mean a lot to me!

start:

"Are you sure about this?" A scruffy looking man looked at Makoto. The dark bags under his eyes and the unkempt stubble growing unevenly on his face made it evident he had not slept well in the past few weeks. Still, his dark eyes were as sharp as ever, and for any other person, it would certainly make them doubt anything they were about to do.

"Surer than ever." She replied simply. Her gaze swept across the views of Tokyo, etching the skyline of the city into her mind.

Perhaps this was the last time she would ever see it again.

"Why would you go this far?" The man sniffled, the rim of his eyes beginning to water. When they were working on the machine together, it felt that they would never be able to complete this impossible task. Now that it came to the final step, it felt as though all the preparations they had done earlier was not enough.

Makoto sighed. "Masoyoshi, thank you. I wouldn't have been able to have done this without you." She spoke simply, looking up at the light blue sky. "Also sensei, Kosuke, Kaho… I'm really grateful for you all."

She turned to the man, and held out her palm.

Masoyoshi's gaze looked resentful. "If you are grateful to us, don't take this kind of crazy risk. We can't even control which future you go to- we don't even know if you'll get there safely- we don't…" His voice broke into sobs. "If you go- how will you come back?"

Makoto didn't say anything. A breeze brushed past, and her now long hair scattered gracefully. Her stubborn gaze was unwavering and her hand was still outstretched.

Masoyoshi placed a walnut-shaped device in her hand. "It's just like your other one, why do you need both?"

Makoto looked at the device in her hand, and a rare hint of a smile seemed to graze across her cold face. According to Kosuke, she used to smile a lot and was rather rambunctious, but Masoyoshi had never seen anything apart from her serious and somewhat sad expression in the past eight years he knew her.

"It's to give someone."

She walked over to what seemed to be a high-tech laser perched on a beam. It was small- no bigger than a coffee machine- and she positioned herself so that the beam was directed at her.

"Start it"

She stood on the ledge, and looked down. They were on top of the highest building in Tokyo- so high up that when looking down, everything below seemed like dots.

Masoyoshi reluctantly began inputting data into the machine. "If this works, if our conjecture is right, you'll enter a broken time space dimension. Remember you need to run forward, and ignore everything else. If you make it- remember, we don't know what are the effects of time travel so don't give away your identity. We don't know if you will end up in a future with you still in it- if that's the case you must avoid future you at all cost. In that case find me, or sensei. Don't...don't forget us, okay?"

Makoto smiled sadly at the ramblings of her friend.

"It's started."

Makoto turned to face the skyline, her fists tightly clenched. In her left hand, she held the old broken time-travelling device from her high school days. Throughout the years, she had held it so much that many of the markings had worn off. It was a device that gave her immeasurable strength. In her right hand, she held what was almost an identical copy.

"You can...do the thing."

Makoto looked down, the sight of sheer height made her knees a little wobbly. It had been a long time since she was the girl that excitedly leapt off small heights with the hopes of turning back time. She had gone bungee jumping and sky-diving for this very moment.

Although she would never admit it to anyone, she was a little afraid of heights.

She squeezed the walnut-shaped devices, and before she could gather anymore reluctant thoughts…

Makoto leapt off the ledge into the concrete jungle below.
