Hey everyone! I'm back with another chapter and thanks for the comments! I love to hear your thoughts and would love to hear even more as the story continues! Thanks for reading and enjoy the story!
I spent most of the night confused. I could speak decent Japanese, but the medical terms and rushed conversations as I was taken care of were too much for me to take in, especially with how much pain I was in. As things slowly started to calm down, I noticed that Mrs. Andrews had arrived and was milling around outside my room.
"Mrs. Andrews?" I called to her and she turned to look at me.
"Hello, Ria," she smiled solemnly as she entered the room.
"Can you tell me what's wrong with my arm? I think it's just a break but I can't understand any of the big words doctors use when they're thrown around in English, let along in Japanese."
"Let me get a translator, I don't know what a lot of the big words mean either," she joked and I forced a grin. I wasn't in the mood for laughs. I wanted to know what was wrong. Even more than that, I wanted to know where my phone was. I lost it somewhere along the way, I think Mrs. Suzuki had it, and I'm sure after the texts I sent Akaashi and Kozu earlier, they were probably freaking out.
I only waited ten or fifteen minutes, but it felt like forever. Finally, Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. Suzuki, a doctor, a nurse, and a woman in a pan suit walked into the room.
"Ria, this is Ms. Ikari, she'll be your translator." Mrs. Andrews told me.
"Nice to meet you," I smiled, "I'm Valeria Jacobi."
"My name is Hina Ikari. This is your doctor, Ms. Sakamoto and the nurse assigned to your room, Ms. Hasegawa." She explained in English, "The doctor is going to tell us what's wrong and then we'll decide what to do next. Before you decide that, though, we'll call your parents, okay?"
I nodded, "I've already broken this arm once before, so I it's probably just the same injury, it hurt just the same as the first time did. My parents will probably just say to slap a cast on it and call when I have a more serious injury." I joked, but Ms. Ikari seemed horrified. Mrs. Andrews cut the conversation off so that Doctor Sakamoto could begin with the explanation.
I caught a few words, like body parts and 'you have' but for the most part that was it. I let Ms. Ikari process what she was going to say to me and then she began.
"You fractured your radius," she pointed to a printed picture of the x-ray they'd taken earlier when I arrived, "If this was the only injury a cast would be the solution, but you also shattered your ulna and pieces are floating around inside your arm, which is potentially very dangerous. The solution is to go in surgically and put the pieces back in place with screws."
I felt my eyes go wide. "I need my phone please."
I took deep breaths as I waited for Mrs. Suzuki to fish it out of her bag. I knew a panic attack was coming on and I hadn't told Mrs. Andrews or the program about those. If I reported them when I applied to the program, I probably would have been denied.
I used my one hand to send a text, lying it flat on my leg while Ms. Ikari and Mrs. Andrews both offered to do it for me. I just shook my head. I wasn't sure what would come out of my mouth if I tried to talk again, so I just kept it closed and finished the text to Kozu.
He'd been texting me for hours, worried out of his mind. I felt horrible for leaving him like that. I'm sure he was in just about the same state I was.
He immediately asked what hospital I was in when he read the text. I had to ask someone. I didn't know what was going to happen if I tried talking to someone for longer than a few words right now, so I used them wisely.
"Can I have a minute alone please?" I asked.
"Of course!" Ms. Ikari quietly ushered everyone out of the room, translating to japanese for them and Mrs. Andrews was the last one to leave. Just as she was about to shut the door I asked her.
"What hospital am I at?" I asked.
"Saint Luke's International Hospital," she said, "Your parents wrote in your medical forms that if you needed to go to a hospital they prefer it be this one, but only asked for you to come here if you were not in mortal danger."
"Oh..." I had no idea, "Thank you."
I felt my voice break a bit and she gave me a sympathetic look as she closed the door.
I picked up my phone, furiously dialing a number, not caring about the international charges.
"Kozu!" I said when he picked up.
"Ria!" he sounded horrible. I wanted to see him, "Where are you?!"
"I'm at St. Luke's international hospital. Can you come here?" I started crying as I spoke to him.
"I'm on the way already, my mom is driving me, she's been on standby with the car, ready to take me wherever I need to go."
"Thank her for me," I sniffled. He did and I heard shuffling and then Mrs. Kenma's voice.
"Don't worry, Ria, Kozume will be there in about an hour. I'll make it faster if I can."
"Thank you." I sniffled some more, wiping my tears, "Kozu, I'll see you soon, but for now I have to call my parents and message Akaashi. He's been blowing up my phone too and I feel bad for worrying him."
"I'll be there soon." he said quietly and then in a severely hushed whisper he added, "I love you," in English.
"I love you too. Bye, Kozu." and then I ended the call.
